From: Ernst Niebur <ernst@cns.caltech.edu>
Date: Fri, 10 Jul 92 17:02:00 -0800

We will be organizing a workshop at the CNS*92 meeting on

ATTENTION !

Although we have been told that we have to work real hard to keep it
informal (prepared overheads are VERBOTEN etc.), we thought it might
be useful to communicate the kinds of questions we would like to
address. Some topics, with associated buzzwords, we would like to talk
about:

Psychophysical results
(Focalized attention vs. spread attention, conjunctions,pop-out ...)

Physiological results
(Influence of attentional state on neural response, cortical
and subcortical areas involved, ...)

Models (mostly computational); neural implementation of attention
(Filtering, gating, gain control ...)

We will focus on visual attention, mostly because this is what we know
most about.

Of course, we will be very open for suggestions.

Fourth Australian Conference On Neural Networks

(ACNN'93)

1st - 3rd February 1993

University of Melbourne
Melbourne, Australia

First Call For Papers

The fourth Australian conference on neural networks will be held in
Melbourne on February 1st-3rd 1993, at the University of Melbourne.

ACNN'93 is the annual national meeting of the Australian Neural Network
community. It is a multi-disciplinary meeting and seeks contributions
from Neuroscientists, Engineers, Computer Scientists, Mathematicians,
Physicists and Psychologists.

This meeting coincides with the national Cognitive Science and
Neuroscience conferences which will also be held in Melbourne in the same
week. There is co-operation and collaboration with these conferences
which should make this meeting a particularly exciting and memorable
multi-disciplinary meeting.

ACNN'93 will feature an invited keynote speaker. The program will
include presentations and poster sessions. Proceedings will be printed
and distributed to the attendees.

Invited Keynote Speaker
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prof Geoff Hinton, Dept of Computer Science, University of Toronto.
forum for presentation of practical work in an environment which will
encourage informal discussions about methodologies and techniques. The
posters will be displayed for a significant period of time and time will
be allocated for authors to be present at their poster for a full
session.
Software demonstrations will be possible for authors who bring portable
computers. The organising committee will attempt to provide full-size
include the title and abstract, and should leave space for, but not
include the authors' names and affiliations. A cover page should be
supplied giving the title of the paper, the name and affiliation of each
author, together with the postal address, the e-mail address, and the
phone and fax numbers of a designated contact author. The type font
should be no smaller than 10 point except in footnotes. A serif font
such as Times or New Century Schoolbook is preferred.
Four copies of the paper and the front cover should be supplied. This
initial submission must be on hard copy to reach us by Friday, 28 August
POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS POSTER SESSION
------------------------------------
Due to unprecedented response, enthusiasm and the high standards
of the student session at ACNN this year, we have decided to host
another Postgraduate Students Poster Session at ACNN93. All
postgrads attending the conference are invited to participate.
The poster session will be conducted in the same format as last year:
Posters should describe work central to the student's thesis topic. For
students who are just starting, or unsure of their ideas, posters can be
short descriptions of thesis topics and preliminary ideas. For more
advanced students, detailed outline of methodology and preliminary
results are appropriate. The main idea is for all students to
participate.
If you intend to participate, please send your name, institution, email
address, poster title and 100-word abstract to janetw@cs.uq.oz.au (or
hardcopy to the address below) by Friday 22nd January 1993. Abstracts
and a list of participants will be distributed at the session.
For more details, contact
Dr Janet Wiles
Departments of Computer Science and Psychology
University of Queensland
QLD 4072 Australia
or email janetw@cs.uq.oz.au
or phone (07)365-2902.
