Subject: Neural Net Research in Universities (a question)
Greetings!
This is my first day on this list, so forgive me if this
question has already been answered in some fashion. I would like
to get an idea of what Universities (parituclarly in the US, but
elsewhere also) are currently conducting research into Computing
with Neural Networks.
I realize this is a broad category, but I would like to
get an idea of size and growth of this field and this seemed
like a nice place to start. Has anyone already compiled such a
list? Is idts so extensive that I am likely to be swamped by mail?
or is it still only a small pocket of scientists here and there?
Sorry about my naivete but I'm just beginning to really
delve into this field of study. Thank you for any and all
responses.

Subject: references wanted
I am looking for short and accessible references on connection machines,
Boltzmann machines, etc. E.g. published articles, introductions and overviews
in proceedings or books, etc.
Can anyone give me some hints?
Thanks in advance.

I have tons of references (I think that I'm really a librarian at heart),
but if you want some of a more introductory flavor, I found the following
pretty good. I hope that they're the area you're looking for:
"Mindworks" in Science86 magazine, May 1986 pp 23-31. NetTalk,
connectionism, natural categories, Hopfield nets, computational cognitive
models.
"Toy Universes: using miniature computer universes that can learn to adapt
and evolve, an eclectic band of scientists is unlocking the secrets of
complex systems" in the June, 1986 issue of Science86, pp 55-59. Classifier
systems, genetic algorithms, dynamical systems theory.
Of course, the PDP books are the definitive scholarly introduction
to this general area. (Rummelart, McClelland et. al. "Parallel Distributed
Processing", volumes 1, 2, soon to be 3. MIT Press (Bradford books)).

The ideas came fast and furious
To the neural-net scientist curious
His fight to contain
Them in models was vain -
Their number caused maxima spurious

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS:
Acceptance of contributors will be determined on the basis of
Draft Final Papers. These papers must not exceed 7
single-spaced A4 pages, in English. They have to contain the
final text to be submitted, however, graphs and pictures need
not be of reproducable quality.
The Draft Final Paper must carry the title, author(s) name(s),
and affiliation in this order. Please specify the symposium in
which you would like to present the paper (one of the letters
above). Each scientist shall submit only 1 paper.
Please send 3 copies of the Draft Final Paper to:
EMCSR 88 - Conference Secretariat
Austrian Society for Cybernetic Studies
Schottengasse 3
A-1010 Vienna, Austria
Deadline for submission: Oct 15, 1987
Authors will be notified about acceptance no later than Nov 20,
1987. They will then be provided with the detailed instructions
for the preperation of the Final Paper.
