The 68030 MMU

The MMU is perhaps the most overlooked aspect of the 68030. Whilst coders moving from the 68000 are quick to pick up on the 030's extra addressing modes and even exploit its data and instruction cache capabilities, few have used the MMU.

When profiling GodBoy it became obvious that one of the largest bottlenecks was the address decoding. For each memory read/write a series of tables had to be consulted to see which block of rom/ram was currently paged in. Then the status of this address range had to be ascertained - was it writeable (RAM) or read only (ROM). ROM writes had to be trapped and specific actions carried out (typically, a write to ROM on the GameBoy changes ROM or RAM bank). Also certain RAM writes had to be trapped - if these writes were made to hardware registers.

The biggest difference between GodBoy and GBX was the optimising of the memory access routines. But even the GBX routines had to use table lookups and jump to different routines - this also added to the burden on the I-Cache and D-Cache.

Wouldn't it be nice if the 68030 code decode the addresses for me in hardware, and carry out the specific actions I needed? After GodBoy I had looked through all the Motorola manuals and decided that the MMU would be ideal for this purpose. The documentation on the MMU was a bit confusing and I had no example source code to work from, so for GBX I went for a software optimisation. After the release of GBX, I decided to thoroughly research the documentation and reprogram the MMU to all the tasks I was doing in software.

Whilst MMUs are great for emulation, this is not their raison d'etre. The 68030 MMU was designed for operating systems that support virtual memory.

The MMU sits between the CPU and the address bus. The CPU will make a read/write request for a certain address. This is known as the logical address. The MMU then consults its look up tables which map logical address to physical addresses. It then fetches/stores a piece of data.

The key concept here is that of Logical and Physical addresses. We are used to seeing the memory on the ST and Falcon in a quite simplistic way - it is a flat, linearly addressable space that ranges The memory model looked a bit like this:

The ST used a 24bit address bus - effectively the highest byte of the address was ignored. This meant you could do neat tricks like using word addressing to access the hardware registers, or even storing attribute data in the high byte of an address.

Word addressing was used by nearly ever demo and games coder.
Instead of supplying a complete address:

        move.l  #$00FF8240,a0

you could supply a partial address:

        move.w  #$8240,a0

The partial address would then be sign extended. As the upper bit of $8240 is 1, the address got sign extended to $FFFF8240. The advantages were smaller code size, and less memory access for each instruction fetch. But there was a problem - sign extending would create address $FFFF8240 when the palette register resided at $00FF8240. But, because of the the ST's 24-bit address bus, the top eight bits were ignored and you got the same result.

This trick worked fine on the ST. But what happened when a new atari machine was introduced with 32-bit addressing? $FFFF8240 now became a completely different address from $00FF8240 meaning problems would arise. Unless...unless there was a way of configuring the CPU so that $00FF8240 and $FFFF8240 were interpreted as the same address. But who could perform such a task? Let me introduce my little friend, Mr. MMU.

The MMU on the Falcon is configured to take a logical address ($FFFF8240) and convert it to a physical address ($00FF8240). Best of all, this translation is completely transparent to the user program!

VIRTUAL MEMORY

The principal use of Memory Management Units is in managing virtual memory. Virtual Memory is way to increase the memory compacity of a computer by utilising secondary storage devices like hard disks. The total memory available becomes is the total of RAM plus the size of a swap file on the hard disk. At the most basic level, when programs access memory outside of RAM, the results are fetched/stored from the hard disk.

Virtual Memory is generally provided at an operating system level. Memory is divided into pages, and information is stored on how often and how recently each page is accessed.

Lets look at a basic overview of a virtual memory management scheme.

The CPU request access to logical address.
If this page is in memory, the logical address is converted to a physical address and data is stored/fetch.
If the page is not in memory, the VM finds a page to swap out of memory ( usually using a Least Recently Used scheme ) and saves this out to the swapfile.
The Requested page of memory is now loaded in, the physical address of this page is mapped to a logical address. The access to the requested address is now performed.

Completely transparent Virtual Memory schemes are impossible in software. Every single memory access would have to make a call to the virtual memory manager which would carry out a lot of processing meaning the system would run at a snails pace. MMUs are not just useful for Virtual Memory schemes, they are essential.

TRANSLATION

MMUs work by translating logical addresses into physical addresses. To do this translation, they use translation table that map one address space into another. This presents us with a problem. For a translation table that completely remaps all of the 4mb of Falcon memory we need 16mb of space! Fortunately, translation tables work in a smarter way than this.

The translation tables on the 68030 work by splitting memory up using uniform subdivision. Then for each page of logical memory, only one pointer to a physical memory location is needed.

There is still a problem with this. If you want really fine control over your memory management ( I needed pages of just 256 bytes for GodBoy ) then a single translation table that divides the entire memory up is going to be massive. And what if you want a combination of large memory pages and small pages? The solution is multiple translation tables.

On the 68030 you can have 4 levels of translation table arranged in a hierarchical structure. The top level table provides very coarse control over the memory, and the further you travel down the table, the greater your control over memory is.

PAGE SIZE

Unlike other processors, which work with fixed page size, the 68030 is very flexible when it comes to dividing up memory. The MMU allows you to have one of 8 different page sizes - 32K, 16k, 8k, 4k, 2k, 1k, 512 bytes and 256 bytes.

TRANSLATION CONTROL

Now things start to get slightly complicated. If you have multiple translation tables arranged hierarchically, you need to specify which bits of an address are controlled by each register. This is where translation control comes in.

Conventionally, the four levels of table on the 030 are labelled A,B,C and D. To access these tables, we need four indexes:

  • TableIndexA - this indexes into TableA to get a pointer to a TableB
  • TableIndexB - this indexes into TableB to get a pointer to TableC
  • TableIndexC - this indexes into TableC to get a pointer to TableD
  • TableIndexD - this indexes into TableD to get a pointer to memory

Lets call these indexes TIA, TIB, TIC and TID.

Lets look at how this works with some pseudo code:

As you can see, we only have one TableA. This is an array of pointers to TableBs. Each TableB contains an array of pointers to TableCs, and each TableC contains an array of pointers to TableDs. Each TableD contains an array of pointers to physical memory locations.

Each table index is created from bits in the logical address. Which bits in the logical address are mapped to a table index is specified by the translation control register.

Lets look at a scheme where the logical address is divided into 4 8bit chunks. Here, each table index is taken from the following logical address bits:

  • 31-24 : TIA
  • 23-16 : TIB
  • 15-8 : TIC
  • 7-0 : TIA

As an example, lets look at address 0x01BC2340

  • TIA = 0x01
  • TIB = 0xBC
  • TIC = 0x23
  • TID = 0x40

How much memory is this scheme going to take up for translation tables?

  • TableA : 1 Tables of 256 entries.
  • TableB : 256 Tables of 256 entries.
  • TableC : 65536 Tables of 256 entries.
  • TableD : 16.7M Tables of 256 entries.

That means we end up with more table entries than we is possible to fit in RAM even if we had 0xFFFFFFFF bytes of RAM! And this isn't even taking into consideration the fact that each table entry for an 030 MMU is 8 bytes long! Something is very wrong here.

It is now the time to introduce three important facts into the equation. First, you don't need to have 4 levels of table - you can just use TableA for a very coarse division of memory. Second, certain bits of the logical address can be ignored. So, for example, you could just use the upper 20 bits of the logical address for your TableA index and use no other tables. Lets look at this example:

Logical Address 0x01BC2340

TIA = 0x01BC2

Memory required:

TableA : 1 table of 512k entries

In this case, the logical address will fetch entry 0x1BC2 from TableA. This will contain a pointer to a physical address. 0x340 is added to this pointer to create the physical address.

This is great as it has a limited memory footprint, but it doesn't give us the fine control we want. For that we need more tables and a spiralling memory requirement.

To solve this, we introduce the concept of EARLY TERMINATION. To explain this further, we shall examine the table entry structure.

Table entries come in two forms:

  • SHORT 4 byte structure
  • LONG 8 byte structure

The entry size is specified at a table level, that is you can have a table of Long entries or a table of Short entries but you can't have a table that contains both Long and Short entries.

The bottom four bits of every pointer in a table entry contains attribute bits and is not part of the address. This means that all tables must be aligned to 16 byte boundaries.

Two of these attribute bits contain a Descriptor Type (DT).

There are four different DTs:

$00 - INVALID

This marks the entry as invalid ( non-addressable memory ).

If the MMU reaches an INVALID descriptor, the table search ends

$01 - PAGE DESCRIPTOR

This specifies that the table entry points to a page, not another table. If this descriptor is encountered in high level table, it is seen as an EARLY TERMINATION descriptor and table search ends.

$02 - VALID 4 BYTE

This specifies that the table entry points to a table with SHORT format entries.

$03 - VALID 8 BYTE

This specifies that the table entry points to a table with LONG format entries.


Using INVALID and EARLY TERMINATION descriptors means that we can dramatically cut down the number of tables we need.

Let's look at an example. If we want 10mb of logically addressable space, the top level tables that with entries point to areas of logical memory above 10mb can have INVALID descriptors so that no lower level tables are needed for this space.

As was said previously, certain bits of the logical address can be ignored. This is down with the Initial Shift field of the Translation Control register. The Initial Shift (IS) specifies how many bits from the top of the address to ignore.

In this example, we want to split memory into 1megabyte pages, but only address 10mb of space. The best way to do this is to ignore the top 8 bits of the address, use the next 4bits as the TableA index and create a single table of 16 entries.

If we want finer control over our address space, say down to 64K pages, this is what we would have to do:

Set TableB Index (TIB) to 4.
Create 10 TableBs of 16 entries each.
Set the descriptor type (DT) of the first 10 entries of TableA to VALID 4 BYTE and set them to point to TableBs.

The data would then look like this:

  • IS = 8
  • TIA = 4
  • TIB = 4

So now you should be getting some idea of how things work. Lets fill in the details.

Hardware level address translation is extremely efficient, especially when compared to any software based scheme, but it does add a small performance hit to all memory accesses.

Some extra logic has to be performed on chip before the memory access can be started. Although this is far better than this logic appearing in software - with the associated instruction time, extra memory reads etc - there is a slight problem. The MMU has to access the translation tables to work out the logical to physical mapping, and these tables are stored in main memory - which means extra memory accesses.

Fortunately the MMU has a cache to store table entries - this is known as the Addres Translation Cache (ATC), and it works in a similar way to the data cache. When the MMU has to perform a translation, it first searches its ATC to see if the entry is already included. If its not there, it has to be fetched from main memory.

This will have some affect on performance. The first access to page will cause the MMU to fetch an entry from the table, but subsequent accesses to that page will be fast. The ATC only has 22 entries. So to optimise for the ATC, ensure you perform as many accesses to the same page in the same code block - try not to jump all around memory. Every time a new page is encountered, performance will suffer for the first access.

The 68030 always uses the MMU. TOS intialises it so all your code is running through the MMU. This may seem frustrating if you are just addressing memory as normally and don't won't the functionality of the MMU. You are not getting its benefits, so why should you get its performance hits?

Fortunately the MMU caters for this case. It has two registers for Transparent Translation. These identify blocks of memory that can be translated without access to MMU. Unfortunately, the slice of memory that the Transparent Translation registers can specify is 16MB.

ROOT POINTERS

You have set up your TableA, but how do you let the MMU know where it is? The MMU has a register which points to the level A table known as a root pointer. In fact there are 2 root points, the CPU Root Pointer (CRP) which is used when the 030 is running in User mode and the Supervisor Root pointer (SRP) which is used when running in supervisor mode. Both are 64 bits in length and specify the following data:

- TableA Address

A pointer to the top level table.
Only the top 28 bits of the address are specified, so TableA must be aligned to a 16 byte boundary

- Descriptor Type (DT)

Descriptor Type for TableA.
This takes the same values as the DTs found in Translation Tables:

00 INVALID

This value is not allowed in the root pointer and will cause an MMU exception.

01 PAGE DESCRIPTOR (EARLY TERMINATION)

No translation table exists, all memory accesses are calculated by adding the TableA address to the logical address specified.

02 VALID 4 BYTE

TableA consists of SHORT (4 byte) entries.

03 VALID 8 BYTE

TableA consists of LONG (8 byte) entries

- Limit

This specifies the maximum or minimum value for indexing TableA. That is, TIA is limited to this value.

- L/U

This specifies whether the value in Limit field is the lower or upper limit. When this bit is set, the limit value is an unsigned upper limit, when this bit is cleared, the limit value is an unsigned lower limit.

So there are already some handy tricks you can perform here.
If you want to transparently translated the entire memory, you can set the DT field to 01 and set the TableA address to zero.

If you want to cut down the amount of entries in your TableA, you can specify a value in the Limit field.

So, lets take another look at our earlier example where we set up a TableA for a 10mb addressable range. We had a 4 bit index for TIA and had 16 entries in our table A, but the final 6 entries contained INVALID descriptors. We could save space by using the limit register:

L/U = 0 ( specify upper limit )
Limit = 9 ( maximum TableA index is 9 )

In this case, we only need a 10 entries for TableA.

If we don't want our TableA index range to be limited, we can use either of these combinations:

L/U = 0; LIMIT = 0x7FFF;

or

L/U = 1; LIMIT = 0x0000;

TRANSLATION CONTROL REGISTER

The Translation Control register does exactly what it says on the tin - controls translation. This is where you set up the sizes of table indices and page size. It is a 32 bit register set up as follows:

These fields specify the number of bits used for each table index.

- IS

The initial shift specifies the the number of bits from the top of the logical address to ignore.

- PS

Page size specifies the size of the page and can contain the following values:

- FCL

Function Code Lookup is an advanced feature that adds an extra level of hierarchy to the translation table tree. When function code lookup is enabled, an extra table is added that sits above TableA. This table has 8 entries, each corresponding to the 3bit code written to the function code register. This means that you can have 8 sets of translation tables that you switch between, so you effectively have 8 times as much logically addressable space.

I never really found this feature useful so I always disabled it.
FCL can contain one of two values:

  • 0 Function Code Lookup disabled
  • 1 Function Code Lookup enabled

- E

As everybody knows, Es are good. And you can't anywhere in the world of Memory management without an E. This register gives you the power to completely disable or enable translation.

  • 0 Translation Disabled (boo!)
  • 1 Translation Enabled (rejoice!)

The main part of this register is the specification of table indices, pages sizes and intial shift. This defines how the logical address will get sliced up.

When setting up the TC register, it is worth remember that

 IS + TIA + TIB + TIC + TID + PS = 32

These values must always sum to 32, as there are 32 bits in a logical address.
TIA must always be greater than zero, and if TIB is zero it must be a minimum of two.
If any of the TIn values contain zeroes, the tables at a lower level is ignored. So if you set TIC to zero, you must also set TID to zero.

DESCRIPTOR FIELDS

We know how to set up the Root Pointer to point to our TableA.

We know how to set up page sizes and table sizes with the TC.

But setting up the tables themselves is a little more confusing, espeically as they can contain data in a variety of different formats.

The different formats of data share a common set of fields, although they don't always appear in the same bit positions.

We'll begin with a description of all the possible field types a table entry can contain.

- CI ( Cache Inhibit )

This will prevent the ATC from cacheing this entry.
Useful for pointers that are frequently updated.


- DESCRIPTOR ADDRESS

A 30bit field which contains the physical address of a page descriptor. The lowest 2 bits of the address are ignored.

- DT ( Descriptor Type )

It comes in 4 fruity flavours :

  • INVALID
  • PAGE DESCRIPTOR
  • VALID 4 BYTE
  • VALID 8 BYTE

See earlier description for more info.

- LIMIT

Specifies a lower or upper limit for table indexing.
Any indices that fall outside this limit will cause a bus error.

- L/U

Used to specifiy whether the Limit value is a Lower or Upper limit.

- M ( Modified )

Whenever a write access is made to the page pointed to by this table entry.

- PAGE ADDRESS

A 24bit pointer to the physical base address of a page in memory. This specifies the top 24bits of the address, the lowest 8 bits are set to zero - pages must be 256 byte aligned.

- RESERVED

These bits are reserved by Motorola and must be written in the format specified.

- S ( Supervisor )

Setting this bit means that the page pointed to be this table has supervisor access only. Reads and writes to supervisor pages in user mode will cause a bus error.

- TABLE ADDRESS

A 28bit pointer to the base address of a lower level table. This specifies the top 28bits of the address, the lowest 4 bits are set to zero ( tables must be 16byte aligned ).

- WP

Write Protect.
The states of all WP bits encountered through a table search are ORed together. If the result is 1 and a write operation is attempted, a bus error will occur.

- U

Update bit.
Whenever a table entry is accessed, the U bit is set.


- UNUSED

These bits are not used by the 030 and can be used by user software

The short format invalid descriptor can be used in any level of the translation table apart from the root pointer. It specifies the address range as invalid.

The short format indirect descriptor resides at the bottom level table of the translation tree, and instead of having a page descriptor has a pointer to a valid 4 byte or valid 8 byte entry. This gives a level of indirection to the look up.

MMU SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

The MMU has a set of instructions that are exclusively associated with it.

PFLUSH

This instruction invalidates an entry in the ATC.

It gives you quite detailed control over the ATC, you can specify the address of the entry to flush, or the type of entry to flush.

Its complete specification is beyond the scope of this article, but for simplicity's sake, when you modify any entry in your translation tree you should issue a PFLUSHA instruction - this flushes all entries.

PLOAD

This loads an entry into the ATC.

PMOVE

This instruction gives access to the full range of MMU registers: CRP, SRP, TC, TT0, TT and the MMUSTATUS register. It allows you to read or write any of these registers.

PRESTORE

Restore MMU status & registers.

PSAVE

Save MMU status & registers.

PScc

Set on MMU condition.

PTEST

Tests a logical address. Returns the following info:

  • Invald Descriptor
  • Limit Violation
  • Bus Error
  • Supervisor Violation
  • Write Protected
  • Modified
  • Transparent
  • Number of levels

PTRAPcc

If the specified MMU condition is true, performs a trap.

PVALID

Validates a pointer.

TRANSLATION ENDS HERE

The MMU seems rather daunting and overly complex at first. Motorola seem to have gone for flexibility over simplicity, and in places this seems unneccessary. The long format descriptors just serve to confuse and in most cases aren't really useful. There are too many different page sizes, and not enough large page sizes ( the biggest size you can specify is a measly 32k ). The function code lookup and an extra layer of complexity to the system.

But once you've got your head around a few key concepts and ploughed through all the nonsense, the power of the MMU becomes apparent. If you are writing an emulator, operating system or virtual memory routine, the MMU isn't just useful, it's essential.

All you have to do is translate all this facts and figures into code. Unfortunately, there is no hardware assistance for this - you'll have to manage on your own.
