CBS.com--Gas Additive Pollutes Water
CBS News Correspondent Jim Axelrod has new information on a story CBS News' Steve Kroft reported on 60 Minutes. The story concerns a gasoline additive called MTBE, and it spells trouble -- for drinking water. How bad is it? It could make you wonder about what's coming out of the tap and how it got there.

MSNBC - Study Fertilizer levels fatal to frogs
Fertilizer levels the Environmental Protection Agency says are safe for human drinking water can kill some species of frogs and toads, according to a new study. Oregon State University researchers found some tadpoles and young frogs raised in water with low levels of nitrates typical of fertilizer runoff ate less, developed physical abnormalities, suffered paralysis and eventually died. In control tanks with normal water, none died.

CNN - Populations outrunning water supplies
Water tables are falling on every continent and major rivers are being drained dry before they reach the sea, according to a report by the Worldwatch Institute that draws a direct link between water availability, population growth and food security.

CNN - Water, water everywhere - but will there be enough to drink
Water is the most common substance on Earth, covering more than 70 percent of the planet's surface. Water makes up two-thirds of our own bodies. But the abundance of water is an illusion. Only a tiny fraction of the planet's water is drinkable.

ASK DR.WATER ABOUT MTBE (see article "CBS.com--Gas Additive Pollutes Water" above)
By Eldon C. Muehling
QUESTION: I have heard in the news lately about a contaminant called MTBE showing up in water supplies all around the country. What is it and does distillation remove it?(Paul C. from Fort Wayne, IN)
ANSWER: The letters of this organic compound stand for Methyl tert Butyl Ether. It is a colorless liquid and smells much like turpentine. Its primary use is as an Octane booster in gasoline and composes up to 11% of the volume of gasoline in many cases. They began using it for this purpose as early as 1979. It has been widely used since 1996 when the additive Tetra Ethyl Lead was outlawed and discontinued for safety reasons. It not only mixes well with gasoline but it is soluble in alcohol, other ethers and water. Because of these chemical characteristics, MTBE is found almost everywhere---in the air, in water even small amounts in the soil. While its positive effects at restoring air quality have been well documented, it is just one of many chemicals that we don't want in our drinking water.
The primary route for getting into soil is from leaking underground gasoline tanks, and there are thousands of them doing so! While MTBE will evaporate from soil, it is also highly mobile in soil and can move easily into groundwater! Once it is in the groundwater it resists chemical decay compared to many organic compounds and can therefore persist for long periods of time. In addition to being detected in groundwater, it has been detected in storm water runoff and surface water. Unfortunately, it is now abundantly clear that this additive has some very serious health side effects of its own!
Today, the U.S. Environment Protection Agency tentatively classifies MTBE as a possible human carcinogen based on animal studies. Consumers can detect the turpentine-like odor and taste at extremely low levels. Symptoms of exposure include: headaches, dizziness, eye irritation, burning of the nose and throat, disorientation and nausea due to MTBE in the air.
There are currently no State or Federal regulations that require municipalities to test for MTBE in drinking water but it is on the EPA's Drinking Water Priority List and the EPA has issued a drinking water advisory level (based on taste and odor) of 20-40 parts per billion. A public health goal has been set at 14 ppb. This means it is a possible candidate for future regulation as well it should be!
Pure Water has independent laboratory test data on many organic compounds with excellent removal rates reported. In checking our records we do not find MTBE having been tested. Based on the characteristics of MTBE we expect that distillation will be effective in removing MTBE. However, to confirm our expectations we are initiating independent laboratory testing. We will pass along the results as soon as we get them.
(Dr. Water is not an actual doctor, but is considered very educated and knowledgeable about water contaminants and distillation. If you would like to read more on Eldon Muehling's water knowledge, you can purchase his book "Pure Water Now" from Pure Water Brand(1-800-875-5915 OR 402-467-9300)
Distilled Water Tip
Easy Sprouting of Seeds....
Distilled water is excellent for sprouting seeds such as alfalfa, beans and other seeds. Not only will you achieve a higher percentage of germination but germination will occur sooner. The sprouts will grow free of contamination found in virtually all tap water. They will also retain their crispness (freshness) for a longer period of time.
