How safe is New York's water?-ENN
If you knew what was in water you might not want another drink. There's a lot of water around New York City, but when it comes to safe drinking water, the Atlantic Ocean, the Hudson River, the East River, and Long Island Sound don't help the situation.

Toxic algae returns to Lake Erie, ENN Daily News
If zebra mussels are responsible for the blooms of Microcystis, we should expect the blooms to become more frequent. And that could be really bad news as Microcystis causes harm to other populations, especially humans. In people, the algae can cause vomiting, diarrhea and hepatitis-like symptoms, including intestinal cramps and liver problems.

CNN - Bangladesh faces disaster from arsenic in underground water.
Most of the millions of wells across Bangladesh are contaminated by naturally occurring arsenic that is leaching into underground aquifers. Low concentrations of arsenic like that in the water slowly build up in the body, causing deadly cancers and other illnesses that may not arise for years.

CNN - Beat the heat while you stay healthy and fit.
Proper hydration is a must. No matter how you choose to exercise or in whatever time of year you choose to do it, your body needs water. Water accounts for approximately 55 percent to 60 percent of an adult's body weight. While a loss of 10 percent may pose a significant health risk, a loss of 20 percent can result in death.

"Water Works"

"Water Works"
"Water is life, literally. Drink more clean water this week -- it will instantly and permanently improve the quality of your life. And the best water to drink? Distilled."
Tip #130 of 365 from "Pocket Personal Coach"
UP UNTIL RECENTLY, Bay Area folks have been moaning to Mother Nature about the cool and windy weather. So she has lit us up.
With the summer of '99 officially ablaze, it is more important than ever. "It" is the most important substance in your body. It comprises 76% of who you are. It makes you look younger than any cosmetic. It cleanses your entire body of harmful toxins. It is the most common nutritional deficiency (and also the most dangerous). It is the secret to supercharged athletic performance and endurance. And it determines your health and energy levels more than any other substance on the planet.
It's cool, crystal clean water.
I know what you're thinking: "Crikey O'Reiley, not another discussion about drinking more boring water! I already know about all that." Below is simple information that will take your health and fitness to another level, I promise.
A recent study in the Journal of American Medicine showed that a whopping 83% of Americans are "chronically dehydrated" resulting in "fatigue, decreased energy, irritability and headaches." My fiancée, Alexandra, agrees: "When I am not feeling well -- if I have a headache or I'm cranky -- the first thing I do is drink lots of water. 90% of the time, I feel better."
The Benefits of Being Well-Hydrated
Aside from the benefits listed above, did you know that if you drink more water you will get more benefit from your exercise; your physical activity will feel easier; you will recover faster; you will burn a lot more fat during exercise; your energy levels will skyrocket and you'll get sick about half as often? It's true.
How to Recognize Dehydration
There are four levels of dehydration: mild, moderate, severe, and Keith Richards.
Mild dehydration causes: thirst, fatigue, and headaches. Moderate: very dry mouth, irritability, cessation of sweating. Severe: profound fatigue, nausea, elevated resting heart rate (100 beats or more per minute). Keith Richards: you begin metamorphosing into Keith Richards.
Lots of Choices -- What to Drink?
There are about a million recommendations for staying well-hydrated proffered by the billion-dollar "sports drink" industry. Most of it is marketing-hype.
Here's all you need to know: one tall glass before exercise, one 20oz water bottle every 30 minutes during and one tall glass after. If you workout less than 60 minutes, choose water; more than 60 minutes, a sports drink with sodium. Don't be fooled: sports drinks are all the same -- essentially sugar-water with some enhancements. Buy what you like most.
One word about the new "designer drinks" (e.g.: Sobe Power): Bogus. They contain relevant supplements, but in insignificant amounts! Better to spend your money on the supplements themselves or on whole juices.
As for regular water, always choose distilled. It's guaranteed clean.
Serious Athletes, Listen Up!
Dehydration is the nemesis of athletes. A simple 2% loss of fluid results in a 10% loss in performance.
Life Service Supplements makes a brilliant new exercise drink that most closely approximates World Health Organization and American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines on oral dehydrating solutions: "Electro Carb." Also, experiment with glycerol; it works wonders.
Avoid "over-hydrating" which flushes essential salts from your system causing hyponatremia. Or worse, you could get stuck in a traffic jam in Japan on the way to a pre-race press conference. But your continued efforts to communicate to your Japanese hosts how desperately you must urinate now fall upon such deaf ears that you suddenly jump out of the car and dive into a small stream. Hypothetically, of course.
Important Tips
- Begin your day right by drinking two tall glasses of water upon arising.
- Thirst is not an adequate indicator of your body's need for fluid replenishment during exercise. If you are feeling thirsty, you're already dehydrated.
- The quality of drinking and bottled water is still uncertain. Drink distilled water; it will dramatically boost your health. Home water distillers are worthwhile investments and Pure Water Brand makes the best ones in the world (1-800-875-5915). If you take one piece of advice from this column, take this one.
- Get a heart rate monitor today and use it! As physical exertion increases linearly, dehydration increases geometrically. To reduce dehydration, stick to exercise below [180-your age] in heartbeats per minute.
- Exercise before 10am and after 6pm.
- Keep a full bottle of water in your car and on your desk at work.
Eric's Challenge
Empowering information is a start, but it is worthless without action, so here's my challenge to you. This week, beginning today, consciously drink more water.

Distilled Water Tip
Better Ice Cubes.......
There is a very noticeable difference in the ice cubes made from distilled water. Not only are they more clear and shinier due to the absence of impurities in the ice but they are also harder. Distilled water is frozen more quickly than tap water because the impurities in tap water lower the freezing point of water. Beat the summer heat with ice cubes made form pure distilled water in your favorite cold drink!
