Braised Beef Stew with Daikon 蘿蔔燉牛肉
Ingredients:
- 3 pounds chuck roast, fat trimmed and cut into large pieces
- 1 large daikon, peeled and cut into large pieces
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce (for marinate)
- 1 tsp black pepper (for marinate)
- 1 Tbsp sugar (for marinate)
- 2 Tbsp cornstarch (for marinate)
- 1 Tbsp oil (for marinate)
- 1 Tbsp oil (for cooking)
- 2 cloves garlic
- 3 large slices ginger
- 5 star anise
- 3 bay leaves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 Tbsp peppercorn
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 4 cups water
- Chopped scallions and cilantro for garnish
Instructions:
- In a bowl, combine chuck roast with soy sauce, black pepper, sugar, cornstarch, and oil. Marinate for 3-4 hours.
- Heat 1 Tbsp of oil in a pot over medium heat. Add garlic, ginger, star anise, bay leaves, cinnamon stick, and peppercorn. Slow cook for a minute until fragrant.
- Add marinated beef pieces and sear until browned (8-10 minutes).
- Pour in 2 Tbsp of soy sauce, 1 Tbsp of oyster sauce, and 4 cups of water.
- Turn the heat to low, cover with a lid, and let it simmer for an hour.
- Introduce the cut daikon into the pot. Close the lid and continue cooking for another 45 minutes. Add water if necessary to maintain desired consistency.
- Sprinkle a handful of chopped scallions and cilantro on top. Your Braised Beef Stew with Daikon is now ready to be served. Enjoy!
Note: Adjust seasoning and water as per personal preference. This hearty dish pairs well with rice or noodles.
