CORRUPT CONSOLE DISKMAG - ISSUE 2 JAN/2000
Elemental-
Another month - another Corrupt magazine. Christmas and the New Years are over, so now we can unfortantly expect less games. To start off this issue I'd like to introduce diPSWiTCH, the current ASCII artist. Sorry it took so long to add to your ascii, dip! Also I'd like to welcome Nuuska as a new game reviewer. One last note. In the last issue, under the charts, I made a mistake under Quasar. The comment by tribe was never added, and the place holder for the original commentors was left in. Oops, SORRY! Well, enough with the intro, let's see what we got this month!
tribe-
January was quite a boring month GBC-wise IMHO but then again perhaps it just seems so because of all the games that came out in December. Ghosts 'N Goblins which many had been waiting for and a couple of other high quality games were released though so January wasn't a complete waste of time.

As usual, Menace delivers most of the American games. Unfortantly, that's not many, this month.. their R-Type DX is the Japanese version of the game, but all the text is still in English (ENG). Same goes for Super Bombliss DX. Thanks goes out to Menace for including pictures of the original games in their releases. It's a nice little extra.
tribe-
Menace scores 60 points this month and are #1 in the charts (again!). I'm glad to see that even in a slow month like January we get fabulous games such as Ghosts 'n Goblins and Bionic Commando - Elite Forces, which ofcourse are brought to us by Menace.
miGHTYMuz-
A few really nice releases from Menace but from now on i get a bit upset if Konfused haven't scanned the carts of the games MNC releases as i love to print , use my scissors and puzzle around with them and even to clue them on my cart.

Not much from Oldskool for us this month.. For a long time during January there was almost no activity, but then Fazwonga gave us a lot of games to play at the very end of the month. By the way, check out Gran Duel; just look at those graphics ! I don't think I've seen any better graphics on the GBC.
tribe-
Oldskool brings us 10 JAP games and an ENG card game called Uno scoring five points less than Menace in the charts. Good work! It's always a pleasure seeing games released by Oldskool and I hope to see lots of them in the future also.
miGHTYMuz-
This month Oldskool decided to bring us most of the JAP titles as always... Make sure to check out Grand Duel and Dixie Kong which both are very good. I had some problems with the monkey game on my 16mV2 tough ,there was enemies flying in the air etc.. but luckily i was help by an emulator.

Not many games to train for CPL this month. Just like all the other groups, Capital didn't have nearly as many releases this month. Rotox made a very high-quality Bionic Commando trainer. When you play that game make sure to use CPL's excellent +6/TR with it.
tribe-
Six trainers from Capital this month, not that much but then again there weren't very many games worth training either. No offence to Capital but in my opinion it's a shame that no other groups released any trainers this month. What on earth would we do without Capital?
miGHTYMuz-
Regards to Rotox & c:o for this months trainers. Among my favorites this month was the Mission Impossible trainer which helped me finish that one after some major problems both on the N64 and the PSX.

MFM releases a new version of the famous GBX-Tool! New in this release is a bunch of bug fixes and support for Pocket Voice. People using Win9X should definitely check out this excellent tool. Later a bug was discovered and a fixed version was released. Later yet another bug was discovered and 1.5d was released after 1.5a.
- NOTE: Only 1 point is given for these releases rather then the full 3 points because they are old versions. The full 3 points only goes to the newest one.
tribe-
Three new versions of my favourite GBX utility, GBX-Tool by MFM, and two games were released by Eurasia in January. Not too bad, keep up the good work with GBX-Tool MFM.

There has been so many versions of V-Rally released over-time, I don't think very many people care about this release. Columns is a great game that I'm sure many people will remember from the old Sega days. If you're wondering why MGSCI is listed as independent rather then Oldskool this month, well, Fazwonga wanted it that way. Even though it's produced by OS members, it's considered an independent release and will be counted that way from now on.
tribe-
Even in a slow month like this three games make it to the independent section and two of those are actually quite good releases, I wonder why no one wanted credit for releasing them. I always enjoy reading MGSCI, it's nice to have some competition.
mIGHTYMuz-
Three independent releases this month and among them a really good RPG. Nice work whoever you are.

Well, what is this! A brand new group releases a single file for the GBC this month. It's obvious they're new at this. The information file (with extension TXT) is just 3 lines long, their internet webpage is down, and there's not even a FILE_ID.DIZ for the BBS users. Maybe we'll see more of them in the future.
tribe-
This is something I though would be mentioned in the independent section, since I didn't think this was a real group. But if I'm wrong and this is actually a real group, here's some advice for you: Get a FILE_ID.DIZ.
- OOPS! MISTAKES MADE THIS MONTH
- Rapid Fire accidentally had two dupe releases, but they were released very close to OS' originals, so it was an easy mistake to make. Atelier Elie and Atelier Marie were both released by Oldskool first.

- Review by: Elemental
Japan gets card and board games made as video-games very often, but it's not everyday an American card game gets it's own cartridge. Just look at all the Shogi games. For those of you who never played Uno, it's very simple. You can have 2-4 players. Each card has a number and a color. The players take turns placing down cards. You must match either the number or the color, and if you can't do it, you have to draw a card from the pile. The first player to drop all his cards wins. To make it more interesting, there's wildcards, draw 2, draw 4, skip, etc. The game is ported very well and is easy to play on the Gameboy Color. Uno is an excellent game to let your kids play.
FINAL SCORE: 7/10 - Not bad.. if you like card games.

I'm sure many people will remember Abe's adventures on the Playstation. Now Abe gets his own game on the GBC. For those of you new to the game, it's a run and jump series similar to Prince of Persia, but the game is more puzzle oriented then it is a test of your reflexes. Playing as Abe, you must free your race which is held captive.
Oddworld 2 features a unique communication system. Pressing A, and 1 of the 4 different directions causes the character you're currently controlling to give a command. Most of the puzzles involve commanding other characters to work with you. For example, in the very beginning you will meet with another character. In order to open a door blocking your path, you and him must both turn two switches at the same time.
Oddworld 2 is a fun game, but it is also very frustrating. Don't expect to complete the first level on your first try, and maybe not even your fifth. It is a good game and deserves a look as long as you have the patience.
FINAL SCORE: 6/10 - An average game that is a lot harder then it should be.

Total soccer from Ubi soft is what all you soccer fans have been waiting for and as you might have seen from Hooligan.exe i'm a bit weak for soccer and get's very excited each time there is a new game out for any of the consoles and finally there's a really good one released for the gbc. You can link up and play with a friend or go for the leagues which includes German, English, French, Dutch, Italian and Spanish aswell as the European cup. The option menu let you set the computer skills from low/super, goal keeper skills, pitch type among others. Before playing u're able to edit the start line with all original player names aswell as attacking or defensive tactics. The gameplay which can be compared to Sensible Soccer on the C64 is from a bird's view and runs very smooth and according to the SFX the crowd goes mental each time there's a goal scored. Unfortently the computer skills are low even if you meet the super comp. and the game will be ran throug in a few minutes.
FINAL SCORE: 9/10 - The game can't be compared to Isspro for the SNES or Fifa2k/PSX but i put it among among the top 5 fotty games ever released for any console. :)
- Name: Quest RPG
- Released by: Independent
- Filename: QUESTRPG.ZIP

- Review by: Elemental
One of the wishes I made last month came true! One genre the GBC lacks in is role playing games. Zelda DX is nice, but if you played the original then it's not worth trying. Survival Kids is great. Revelations: The Demon Slayer isn't bad. That's only 3 RPGs in English... if you played Quest 64 on the Nintendo 64, then you'd know it's a horrible RPG not even worth looking at. Then comes Quest Fantasy Adventure on the GBC. It's an exact copy of a classic arcade game with a couple graphic modifications. And now the latest game in this unpopular series, Quest RPG on the GBC.
Upon starting it up, the graphics are instantly familiar to anybody that played classic NES and SNES RPGs. The game-play is familiar to. For a couple minutes you scroll through a non-interactive cut scene, and then the game finally starts. You get to control Brian, a little boy at a monastery. Brian is a magic user who starts out with little power in each of the four elements, Fire, Rock, Wind, and Water. By walking around and fighting monsters you can gain spirits that raise your power in one of the elements, and the more powerful the element is, the more powerful the spells of that element become.
The only real downfall of the game is it's storyline. Like the original, Quest RPG is aimed at children. The storyline isn't much more then your favorite fairy-tell plots. Save the princess, fight the monsters, etc. The game is also a rather basic RPG. There's no economic system, you only control one character, there's no equipment system, etc. Nevertheless, the game is a great RPG in the classic style, and for those who bought the GBC expecting games like the ones on their NES and SNES, this game definitely deserves a look.
FINAL SCORE: 9/10 - A great, lighthearted, classic-console style RPG.
- Name: Pong
- Released by: Menace
- Filename: MNC-PONG.ZIP
- Size: 8 Mbit
- Genre: Pong!
- Review by: Elemental
Lately Hasbro has been releasing classic games on the different systems. Among the line-up is Centipede, Tetris, Q-Bert, Missile Command, Pong, and some others. If you played Pong on the PC, you'd see it has gameplay like the original, but it also much more advanced. It had 3D graphics, around 30 different versions of Pong (arctic, soccer, etc.), and numerous power-ups that enhance the quality of the game. Now, the PC version of Hasbro's Pong has been ported to the GBC.
Right from the start you can tell the game is terrible. You get 5 options of play, an option to turn on or off the music, and a difficulty level. The graphics may be different in the different modes of play, but the game-play is almost identical. The tournament mode just plays the 4 different stages in a row, but don't bother doing it, there's no fancy ending. There's not even credits at the end. The next pitfall is the dificulty level. The computer purposely misses so much on Easy, a blind person could win most of the time. On medium, somebody who is playing a console game for the first time could win with ease. Even on hard, anybody with the slightest bit of reflexes could easily beat the computer.
The game is too easy, the graphics are bad, there's only 4 different modes of play, and all the sound is horrible. The very first time you play the game you can finish the entire thing. If you're a fan of classic games, Pong in particular, then give it a try, but don't get your hopes up. If you don't care for old games, don't waste your time on this trash.
FINAL SCORE: 2/10 - If you want to play Pong, play the PC version.
- Name: Bionic Commando: Elite Forces
- Released by: Menace
- Filename: MNC-BCEF.ZIP
- Size: 16 Mbit
- Genre: Platformer
- Review by: Elemental
Many people will remember this classic from the arcade or 8bit NES. Unlike many GBC games, it's not just a port, it's actually a new game in the series. As the game starts out, the first thing you will notice is the amazing quality of art. Especially the cut-scene images are excellent pixel art. The story-line your basic war story where an important person is captured and it's your job to rescue him. You get to choose between two different soldiers, a male and a female. They both have the same abilities and the game is the same for both of them.
What makes this game different from other platformers is the way you get around. There is no way to jump - your only way to get around is by walking and using your grappling hook arm. Using the grappling hook you can swing yourself around, pull yourself up, etc.
For those who have played previous versions of Bionic Commando, there are two new additions to this one. When traveling on the over-head map you can have enemy encounters in an over-head manner. This feature is actually rather boring, but very useful because a success gives you an extra life. Also there is a sniper mode added. At certain points in the side-scrolling levels you can enter a sniping mode. The screen is divided into two parts here. A regular-looking version where it's far away, and a close-up so you can aim at the enemies. Defeating all of them in a certain amount of time will give you a much-needed health pack.
The month started out boring, but at the end of the month we got many quality games. Bionic Commando is definitely the game of the month being an excellent action game with superb graphics. My only complaint would have to be the lack of a V1 fix. Will anybody program one sometime? :) Also, make sure to use Capital's quality trainer on this game.
FINAL SCORE: 10/10 - Simply one of the best Gameboy Color games.
- Name: Pocket Billiard
- Released by: Oldskool
- Filename: OS-PBILL.ZIP
- Size: 8 Megabits
- Genre: Sports
- Review by: tribe
Billiard/Pool games have appeared on many systems from Hustler in the arcades to Virtual Pool on the PC. Some of those games have been very well made but a large amount has been crap. I was hoping Pocket Billiard would have been of the better kind, but unfortunately it wasn't.
The gameplay is very slow and boring, because of texts such as "Player Change" and "It's 1-player TURN" showing on the screen between shots, and because shots made by the computer player usually last quite long.
Pocket Billiard features three different game modes; "Nineball", "Eightball", and "Rotation". Those terms should be known to anyone familiar with the sport. But if you aren't don't worry; the rules of each game mode are included in the game. Unfortunately they are in Japanese.
Even though the game isn't very good it does have a few nice features. For example two players can play the game on one Gameboy and even though the game is Japanese most of the text is in English.
The sounds and graphics in the game are not bad, but they aren't anything special either.
FINAL SCORE: 4/10 - More boring than watching billiard on TV.
NEXT ISSUE
After I made the first issue of CORRUPT, I was considering quitting it because of lack of interest. I decided to keep making it for two reasons.. I like writing it, and two, there are more people who read it then I thought... I'd like to make the magazine more popular and expand the reading audience, and here's what I've been thinking about adding. Please contact me on IRC, BBSs, or by e-mail at buzzb@mindspring.com and tell me what you'd like.
- Elemental
- ASCII - Currently the magazine uses Amiga ASCII. In the future, what type of ASCII would be preferred? Should I keep the ASCII featured in this issue, or issue 1, or should I get a new artist every month like originally planned? And if I do get a new artist, should it be Amiga ASCII or PC ascii?
- Format - By this I mean how you will read the magazine. Obviously it's currently a text file. Many people will remember CONSOLE WORLD and SH0CK which were both SNES\SEGA magazines, but distributed on disks and by BBSs to be viewed on your SNES copier. This has the obvious advantages of graphics, music, etc, but as a disadvantage it lowers the amount of people who can read it. Should CORRUPT be viewed on the GBC, or any other console for that matter, or is it best as a text-file? Both?
- Consoles - Originally CORRUPT was planned to cover all consoles, but this was too much work so it switched over to being Gameboy Color only. How would you like it if CORRUPT covered more consoles? Nintendo 64, Playstation, Dreamcast, Neo Geo Pocket Color, etc. Any console that's getting releases.
- Articles - With CORRUPT currently being only release charts, comments, and reviews, there's lots of room for more. In the last issue MGSCI featured an interview. I was thinking about adding the same feature to CORRUPT. Other articles could include coding information, information on companies and groups, pieces of scene history, etc. Would this be interesting, or just boring? Or even better, would you be interested in writing anything?
- Date of release - Weekly? Monthly? Bi-monthly? How often should there be a new issue?
- Voting charts - along with the release charts are a voting charts. With every issue you could get a vote sheet to choose your favorite group, demo, release, site, coder, supplier, etc.
I hope I can get lots of responses on this. I want to make CORRUPT more then it is. Make sure to contact me with your thoughts.
