Dear Modem Friends:
Bula Venaka!! Which, in Fijian means, "Happy hello!" I am happy to write to you this month because of God's bountiful blessings. We've actually started deputation and it's exciting, how exciting???
The other morning I had called a great number of churches and didn't find one in the bunch that could schedule me for a meeting. I, with a very serious look on my face, marched across the street where the treasurer of our church lives. I told him, "You're in sin or you're not praying for your pastor." He looked at me and asked, "Why, what's happened??" I told him, "I've spent all morning calling churches and haven't scheduled a meeting, so, for some reason God is not hearing your prayers, or you're not praying. "He chuckled and said, "Okay, pastor I'll go into the house and pray for you." With a slick grin on my face I marched over to the office and began calling again. The very first call I made turned into a meeting, Praise The Lord!
We've just returned from the Montrose Bible Conference, and it was excellent. How good was it?? We've been asked back for next year when Lehman Strauss, Dean Ortner (from Science and the Bible,) and the Swartzs are the featured ministers for the week. I wish to thank Jim Fahringer, the conference director, for his confidence in our ministry and the wonderful time we had there. I would recommend a visit to the Montrose Bible Conference for any of our friends.
I also wish to commend the Swartzs, Phil and Carol, who were the musical guests for the week, they were great. I highly recommend them to any of our church friends. You can contact them through Montrose Bible Conference.
I also wish to thank brothers Mel Johnson and Tal McNutt who were the featured speakers for the week, each possessing many years of experience in the ministry. After one of my morning lectures Mel and Tal called me over and each with a hand on my shoulder said, "Dan, we feel that you are going to receive the necessary funds to go to Fiji long before your projected date!!" I was somewhat taken back by their confidence in our ministry, and very appreciative for their encouragement.
Other blessings: We've had 6 saved at the Union Baptist Church, and 1 baptized! We've also had a family say that they were praying about a short term missions trip to Fiji after we got there and settled in. Another husband and wife team, both educators and possessing Ph. D.s confirmed that they would like to plan a short term missions trip to Fiji after we've returned to the islands.
Regarding our itinerary, it's filling out nicely. While most of our meetings are for the fall and winter and even into 1994 we do have some scheduled toward the end of the summer. This means that support funds are very low and a great deal that needs to be done is put on hold. There have been those wonderful blessings when supporters place a love gift into an envelope and send it our way. That helps a great deal in paying for mailings and phone bills. We wish to say, Thank You for your expressions of Love! We also wish to thank those who have continued to pray for us throughout this summer. Keep up the good work it's paying off in lives and souls.
From the mission field of Fiji: I've just been informed that one of our students, Sisa (pronounced Caesar), at the Christian Leadership College has started a new church. Its just 3 months old and has over 30 adults in attendance. Pastor Ryu informs me that he has led 20 Hindus to Christ and they are part of the new church. AMEN! Pray for this young church and its pastor. Also, Dr. Poate's mother, Laisani, was baptized in the ocean a short time ago. Dr. Poate is one of Fiji's chief medical surgeons and Laisani is a school teacher. Both Dr. Poate and Laisani are members of the Central Baptist Church.
Praise the Lord our brochures are finished. We will enclose some with this mailing and will be happy to send more upon request. Make sure your pastor and/or missions board gets one. As you can tell much work and planning has gone into the brochure and I wish to thank Missionary Action Projects, Inc. (our missions board), the Victory Baptist Church in Rochester New York, and Brian Warner of Warner Advertising for their excellent work and support concerning this venture.
