Quick Tips

This month's Quick Tips come from Hagbard Celine, a longtime DD user who answers some of the most commonly asked hack/phreak questions.

.........

Okay, Some of you know me, some of you remember me, but I'm back. To answer some questions that were posted:

ANI: 800.775.5513- Telescan. It's a private corperation that rents out VMBs to Private dicks, etc, and when a person calls the number, it will let them leave a message, and their phone number will follow thereafter. This is their order line, that simply offers a demo by reading it back to you.

RED Boxing: Tonedialers:Call 18005434330. MCM electronics. They sell tonedialers identical to the Radio Hack versions for 14.95 with 10 mem redial, and 9.95 for tone dialers with no memory. Radio Hack does have plans for new ones, but don't fuck with them.

Fortress Phones: Bullet proof my ass. There is a little trend here in gangland of shotgunning payphones. Lot of noise, but definitely worth it. If you don't believe me, I have pictures of a phone blown to hell, and a few pieces of a GTE phone.

Trashing: Who ever wanted to get a bunch of people for trashing. Christ, I find it is best to go with three people: two to go and grab 4-8 bags, and one to drive. I have personally gone alone, and just sat around for 45 minutes scrounging.

Line Mans Handset: Most of the GTE handsets contain the AMCD buttons of a clear box. So far these tones are not used for anything, but they are present on 16 point DTMF encoders. Also, some 14.4s have them inside. Just try: ATDT AMCD to see if yours has it. So far it is mostly only used for Military lines, and internal TelCo ops.

UNIX: Someone wanted to know about UNIX defaults, and what to try, here is a list of defaults:

  • ROOT/ROOT
  • ADMIN/ADMIN
  • ADMIN/SYSADMIN
  • UNIX/UNIX
  • UUCP/UUCP
  • NUUCP/NUUCP
  • UUCPN/UUCPN
  • RJE/RJE
  • GUEST/GUEST
  • DEMO/DEMO
  • DAEMON/DAEMON
  • SYSBIB/SYSBIN
  • NETWORK/NETWORK
  • SYSTEM/OPERATOR
  • SYSTEM/SYSTEM

Those are in the format of USERNAME/PASSWORD.

SYS-75s: Some one wanted to know about sys-75 back doors. Not bloody likely. However, since I think no one vollenteerd the info, you can usually go in under BROWSE/LOOKER. This account cannot write, but you can look around, and get a general feel for the system. Luckily, under BROWSE, there is no logging, so you need not worry. Also, a particular problem with SYS-75s, is that they are ALL owned by at&t. Not operated by, just owned. So if you create a PBX via a system 75, and call your friends, they will investigate. I got the call once or twice, but played dumb. There are other defaults thatn Browse/Looker, but I don't like giving them out. You can find them almost anywhere.

COCOTS: Neat trick, after someone calls you with a COCOT, right before they hang up, throw a recording of the Disconnected number message at them, They will be disconnected, and get their money back. This only works on a few brands of cocot, however.

AT&T Air Force Patrols (Or Big Brother is Watching you)

"Every day, a fleet of airplanes informally called the AT&T Air Force patrols 40,000 miles of cable routes, as well as stretches of continental shelf where trans-oceanic cables come withing a few hundred feet of the surface. A shrimp boat spotted working near a cable will receive a flurry of message tubes from above, warning the skipper away."

International Virus Writing Contest

The Second International Virus writing competition, sponsored by American Eagle Publications and Crypt Infosystems BBS (818.683.0854) is underway. The deadline for entries is June 30, and winners will be announced at DEFCON II in Las Vegas. Details inside the magazine.
