The last hieroglyphic: Pharaoh
Pin it

Hieroglyphic writing began in the fourth millennium and ended on August 24, 394 AD.

The latest hieroglyphic inscription known so far dates to this date: simple and unrefined, it was written on the inside of the north wall of Hadrian's Gate in front of an image of the Nubian god Mandulis, on the islet of Philae, by Esmet-Aakhom, scribe of the temple archive.

The cartouche reads: pr '3 (great house) from which the name pharaoh would later be derived.
