#ANSI

Well I have decided to try and do a review. This will be the first ever for me. I will admit that I am definitely no one to judge peoples art, but I was Founder of Shiver a few months ago, so i do know what is good and what is not. I might have been a little harsh in some areas, but I have always been a hard marker. I am not trying to offend anyone so if I marked your ansi low please do not take offense to it, like I said this is my first review. I feel I have started out strong on the first few ansis but then started to lighten up a little. Well anyways lets take a look at the pak now, and at my opinion of each piece of art done by this group.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well finally I have finished my review. Shivers pack for 1194 was pretty impressive. Every pack this group releases gets better and better. Shiver has many talented artists. I have chosen 5 pieces of work that I liked best and they are:

  1. Trickster's [TR-ARCAN.GIF]
  2. Creep's [CE-SHVR1.ANS]
  3. Crimson Ryder's [CR-SRNTY.RIP]
  4. Mephitopeles's [MP-SHVR1.BIN]
  5. The Guardian / The Undead Sorcerers [US-SUSHI.ANS]

I am not sure .. but there were a couple of blurry logos, I don't personally like that style but that could be the style that it is supposed to appear as, I am truly sorry if that is what it was but My opinion is I really don't like blurry logos or choppy ansis. Anyways Shiver your pack was really good. I would rate you 8.0 / 10 overall. Well hope you enjoyed my first Review. Please feel free to mail me any comments you might have on this review at sblock@phoenix.princeton.edu. Thank you.

The Popular Attitude Problems

Well I have decided to write this article on Attitudes because of my hatred for people with these netrocities. When I had just started getting the hang of BBS'n you did not notice it that much, a little bit but not much.

Then when I joined Shiver I really started to feel it. When I began to go onto Internet and talk with some people who at that time where considered *ELEET* I found that there egos and attitudes were very degrading. They would sit there like they were the president of the world looking down on there people. I thought that when I became known I wouldn't have to deal with it, but boy was I wrong, it was worse. Some people in particular were very disruptive towards me, they would call me lame because they were anti-Shiver, as they would say. Well I could not handle this and I began to sink to there immature level by replying with something stupid like "Your not eleet you dumn fuck" or something dumn like that. But I found that they would just do it now to frustrate me. Well finally I overcame this frustration and just began to laugh at them, because the one thing they don't relize is that they look stupid sitting there flaming someone like that, so why not let them make a fool out of themselves, instead of me making a fool of myself.

I have always asked myself why do people act like this? Well I think I have discovered the answer. They have these gigantic egos and attitudes because they think that because they are known in the art world and can do some kickass pieces of art they are dominant to others. Well see if you have this attitude a lot of people don't like you, and begin to despize you, so I always ask myself why not just be nice about things and make lots of friends and be known as a kewl person rather then an idiot. Another one of my theories that I have to this weird netrocity is that maybe they are not so big in the real world so when they get onto Cyberspace and become known they want to act like some big macho man and be some domineering guy there because they can't be anywhere else. Well my answer to this is that why would you want to be like this? Because, if you are normal and nice people will like you for being nice, but if you are self-centred and very rude they will think you are some idiot trying to be kewl, and that you are some huge beeker in the real world. So be like some of those nice good artists and not be rude but be someone nice that someone would want to be like.

I guess what my message is, is that you don't have to have some big ego or attitude to fit in. If you want to fit in be nice and caring. Don't call people lamers, and don't think that you are some great wizard or something that people should respect. My last words of advice are remember it is not how good you draw that makes you something or how good you can code or whatever but what makes you, you is your kindness to others not your rudeness.

What I Did On My Summer Vacation

by Usul : Blade PR Coordinator

Hello all you kewlin' people. My job is easy. Make you see that Blade is out here. That we exist. We're not known as much as some of the other 3rd party groups, and I'm trying to fix all that. Ok, Ok, so I haven't been trying that hard because of other shit. But Assaylant comes along and asks me to do this article thing, and I have nothing else better to do with my life, so I do it. Anyways, here goes:

What is Blade? It's MindCrime's little Hooked On Sexual Toys group that puts those c00l-e lookin' ansi pack thingies together. Fine. It has nothing to do with sexual toys, but I have to keep laughing from something. The group is slightly undermanned right now, but hopefully will start to flourish in due time. Well, it's not the end of the world if it doesn't, ... er... anyways...

Check out a Blade pack. They're not overcrowded with wasteful files that make the pack 1.44M or anything. Just art and all that good stuff. If yer into lit, which is becoming more a rarity these days, then check out Blade's lit division. It ranks right up there with doing some acid to Pink Floyd... ok... not that good, but you get my point.

I can't make this article 90 million miles long, cuz then no one will read it. If yer still actually reading this, then thank you. You guys deserve a golden star from Barney... and Baby Bop can pin it on ya! :)

So if ya wanna check out a nice ansi pack that has some kewlin' art and writing, then pick up a Blade pack. 9 out of 10 foot doctors recommend it over the other brands.

Get out of the cold, and into the bold....[ BL/.DE ]

Cia

CONNECT 14400/V32/BLAH/BLAH

'lo.. i'm blurr.. current public relations director for cia.. (i also do ansi and ascii for the group).. just thought i'd take out and write an article for this nifty mag: evolution.. first we'll go over the main points i would like hit in the article..

GROUP STATUS: well.. we're currently still running strong after a year and a half of being active in the scene.. we're still pumping out music disks (each disk comes separate from our regular packs) each month.. our ansi, ascii, and lit divisions are still doing quality work.. (we've also added lord valgamon, lifetime, and archmage to the lit division).. ..among the ranks of cia, also make sure to look for many pipeline menu sets, utilities, and other goodies being produced by our current members..

GROUP SITUATION: we desperately need VGA artists and a VGA co-ordinator.. so if you're not happy with your current position or would like a change in your VGA career, we'd be happy to have you aboard cia.. leave a message on our VMB (1-800-245-4366) and we'll take care of it from there.. we still ansi, ascii, lit, rip and coding artists.. so.. look us up.

DA FUTURE: look for a revamped version of intense view (dubbed intense view/2) it has many new features (i won't reveal em now).. also, look for cia to become a more internet orientated group.. if you frequent #ansi, don't forget to pop in #cia and check out CiAbot..

WANNA CONTACT US?: if you need to get a hold of us, below is a list of ways you can contact various areas of cia..

voice mail: 1-800-245-4366 [all areas]

e-mail: boutros@earth.execpc.com [public relations and music]

bbs: 1-908-647-1194 (brave new world) [all areas]
1-513-923-4984 (illegal embassy) [all areas]

networks: crime in progress (cip) net [all areas]

alright.. got that crap outta the way.. so.. i'll use the rest of this space to give you my personal insights.. it's been rough over at CiA the past few months.. we've had to deal with the mergers of two groups (CAE and RAVE).. tron was also involved in a serious car accident (he's better now) ..there was also a temporary controversy over one of our greetings on our VMB.. some people took offense to a conversation between and indian man and an afro-american man.. i just have one thing to say.. GET OVER IT.. it was a f*cking greeting.. it wasn't a politcal statement from CiA.. it's called having fun.. maybe others should try it.. ..hmmMm.. oh yeah.. group ratings.. it seems that some people criticize CiA because we aren't ranked in the top 5 or whatever.. to those people, i would just like to extend a warm middle finger.. CiA doesn't make art so we can be compared with acid, ice and union.. we draw out of intrest.. or money.. or what ever would persuade us to draw.. CiA may not be your typical egotistical outspoken art group, but we're pretty good.. ..to those who've supported cia.. thanx!.. especially to those members of klf, acid, ice, union, shiver, tic, vor, and those nifty editors at terbium, undergrown, and evolition.. we couldn't have been what we are now if it wasn't for your influence (good or bad).. ..that's about all.. while i have free space, i'd like to give personal greets to c. neurosis [cia ss], dark wing [rts], eerie [relic], tron [cia], trident [cia ss], frost byte [cia ss], betrayer [shiver ss], and quisling [union].. l8rz..

Trend in Music

by diabolos

This is my first time writing for an electronic magazine, or writing for any spread publication, so what you see here might not be so interesting to you. Read on. I, like alot of people, enjoy music thurougly, and spend major chunks of their money keeping up to date with the new groups, and new albums, and new "trends". I find it pointless to go out and buy the new 'trendy' stuff, so I have decided to write a little peice about the less 'trendy', or less listened to music.

First of all, the new stuff isn't always as good as you want it to be. You might hear a cool song with a cool video attached to it on MTV or some other evil source. :) Then you go out and buy the album, listen to it, and find the only good song on there is the one you bought the whole album for. I don't know about alot of people, but that pisses me off. Here are a few recomendations of less 'trendy' groups, and their respective albums, and a few trendy groups, with (gasp) good albums.

PRIMUS -
-FrizzleFry

Primus has always been one of my favorites since a few of my friends introduced me to it. Primus is a mix of country-style music, hard rock, and just plain spazz. The sound of Primus is unlike ANY sound you will ever hear. The lead singer and bassist, Les Claypool, is one of the best at what he does. Les is (in many peoples opinions) the best basist alive today.

His lyrics are, well, strange. He doesn't write about daily problems, world issues, drugs, or other crap that other artists thrive on, he just writes for fun, and doesn't care what other people think about it. In FrizzleFry, the second (and maybe the best) Primus album, you will find the most bizzare lyrics and riffs you will ever hear. Songs like "Too Many Puppies", "Pudding Time", and "Frizzlefry" will totally crack you up, and make you want to listen to them over and over again. Other songs on the album are not as catchy, but its an all around good album, one of my favorites. This was before Primus became noticed by little preppy-geeks with "My Name is Mud".

"This must be college music, or somthing."

Smashing Pumpkins -

-Siamese Dream
-Gish

Smashing Pumpkins have also been one of my favorite since I picked up their current album "Siamese Dream" after hearing their now overplayed song Disarm. Smashing Pumpkins, in my opinion, is one of the best groups on the modern music scene. They mix punkish rock, with original riffs, and awesome lyrics, more often than not, they focus on playing more of a soft, slow type of music. The lead singer, Billy Corgan writes about his troubled childhood, and his parents, he also occasionally bitches about how the alternative music scene has gotten too big and over-rated. He and James Iha, the lead guitarist, pump out powerful riffs and sounds from the amps.. some of the most awesome stuff. D'arcy, the bass player, plays very well, and looks good on stage. A hot chick in a band doesn't hurt :). Siamese Dream, now, is probably selling Platnium, but it's still one of the best albums I have heard, currently it is my favorite. On Siamese Dream, the first few songs are hard and punky, then the rest of the album goes slow and soft, I tend to enjoy the slow and soft stuff more than the hard sort. The most catchy song on the album is "Quiet", which I pray never goes on MTV. Quiet is the hardest song on the album, and it just plain kicks ass. On to Gish.

Gish, their first album, focuses more on soft music, with an occasional hard chorus. I think the best on the album is Rhinocerous, Rhinocerous is a slow, soft song with a couple of hard choruses. But many peoples favorite is Siva, the rare hard song on Gish. Siva was their first MTV video, and first semi-big hit in the club scene.

nine inch nails -

-broken

This album is what gave nine inch nails and Trent Reznor alot of publicity and trend. Broken has to be one of the alltime best selling albums to freaks who want to be someone they aren't and listen to different music. It is nine inch nails mistake, but also their best album. It made nine inch nails HUGE to wannabes and other people alike. The whole album is very hard industrial/grindcore. Wish is probably the most popular song on the album. Wish combines a constant unchanging beat with awesome lyrics and hard, short choruses. My favorite song on the album has to be Last, it also has a basically unchanging beat, and constant pace. This song also contains the most screaming by Trent Reznor on the album. :) Happiness in Slavery has to be one of the most freaky songs, screaming, hard beats, and very strange noises make this song .. well.... interesting. Broken also has 2 hidden tracks at the end, 6 songs on tracks 1-6, then 7-97 are 1 second blank tracks, and the last 2 songs are on tracks 98 and 99. You can find this album almost anywhere.

......thats it, hope i didn't bore you. pick up frizzlefry. :)

Evolution - It's not just a magazine, it's an attitude.

Yeah... It's an attitude.

A lifestyle based on speed, technology, and the divine right of exploration. It's beliefs are strongly against political correctness, censorship, police and all other forms of authority.

It's based on the unity of youth, brotherhood and respect. An attack against tradition. It's the quest to improve our life, even at the expense of others. It is the calling of a lost generation, it is the proper time for a rebellion, a revolution.

In the age of the ninetees, we face an increasing nuclear threat, and we may even face a nuclear attack by the end of the decade. With the weapons disarmament from our mid-century cold war, and the breakdown of the government of the Soviet Union, Cuba and other communist regims has placed tens of thousands of kilograms of weapons grade material in incompetent hands. This material, mainly consisting of Plutonium, enriched Uranium 238 and the legendary Red Mercury, can be removed from the waste of almost any nuclear plant.

A renegade terrorist group, with little nuclear knowledge, could fairly easily build a Uranium bomb, or with a scientist create a more potent Plutonium bomb, and bring an entire government down to it's knees.

With a government that supports neo-nazic movements and immorally spies on it's own people, why should we trust them? They want to restrict our movements, our limits, our way of life.

We are also given incredible technology that no other generation could ever dream of. A global network bringing unlimited information to our fingertips. Underground and banned information easily accessable to anyone with a modem. Our secret community of 1's and 0's has more potential than we realise, and we should harness it.

We need a more defined culture, one that is exciting, powerful and shows the government and ourselves that we are are not the stoners of the sixties, the losers of the seventies, nor the punks of the eightees. We are the thirteenth generation, and we have neither a name nor a face. We are an undefined cluster of humanity, comprised of the discards of previous generations. It is time for a change.

What do I propose?
We have the knowledge to do almost anything. We could build explosives to our heart's content, or plot to take over a country through the phone lines.

I propose that we do something with our combined knowledge, something that will benifit us not only in the pirate society, but in real life, and tie in with this newly founded lifestyle. We are capable of much more than we might realise, and what do we do with our power? Squable in flame wars, trade so-called "elite krad 0 day warez", or worse, leech? It's pathetic. We could form gangs of sorts, combining our knowledge and abilities to do almost anything. We could take over much of the Internet, and use it to expand our movement.

On the other side, we could do something positive. We could make form political parties, conduct scientific research, help each other in schooling and life. We could use this as a tool to improve our life and knowledge, and benifit society.

Yet we continue to fool around, posting elite messages, joining elite groups, trading elite warez, and acting like assholes. It is our society that needs to change, and we can shape it into unlimited forms.

Remorse

Well another ascii group has joined the scene. Like kts remorse was started because there are just too many ansi groups. What really gave it it's name even before they had a pack was their members. Remorse pulled artists from kts, shiver, and other major groups. They even got two well known ansi artists to show their hand at ascii, that's beastie and t2. Both proved that they can draw amazing art whether it's ascii or ansi. While remorse was getting started a smaller local ascii group called image was also trying to get on their feet. It was started by MP, and me (cthulhu). Later Nightrain took over as president.

About a week later the decision of remorses and images merge was made. Image broke up and remorse took NT, MP, and me. The rest of the image members were dropped. Remorse artists released their first pack this month, just ask nECR0 or nmancer for it on #ansi if you don't have it. Well that's w'sup, l8z.

The Making Of A Giant

The name Metallica brings different thoughts to different minds. In this writers mind it means "Great Band"...In others minds it may mean "Crap". No matter what it means to you, This is about the making a a decent band from nothing but a bunch of guys bangin away on instruments.

They started the band way back in 1983....well thats when the first album hit the stores. The original founders were Ron Mgovney on Bass, James Hetfield on Rhythym and Vocals, Lars Ulrich on drums, and Dave Mustain on lead guitar. For a while they were playing clubs and not doing very well due to the lack of interest in the New wave of British metal. For reasons that are still sketchy, Ron left the group to pursue other things. This is when the infamous Cliff Burton was found. They walked into a club and saw this guy on stage whipping his head around and just generally going crazy. At first glance they knew this was the guy they needed on bass. After the show they asked Cliff to join, and without hesitation he did. Thus became the foundation for the group. They continued playing clubs and barely getting by on the little money they were making. After a while they had saved enough to be able to cut a small demo entitled "No Life Till Leather". This now famous demo is what really got them their first record deal and recognition.

A record promoter in NY got a hold of the demo, and after hearing it was instantly aware that the band was going to be a monster. He gave them a call and asked them to come out to NYC for a deal. Without even thinking they packed up all that they owned into a U-Haul truck and drove cross country finally arriving in NYC. But there were problems along the way....their lead guitarist Dave Mustain had a very bad drinking and drug problem. He was often abusive and rowdy and impossible to get along with. After arriving in NYC the band decided to release Dave and look for a new lead guitarist. Enter the current guitarist Kirk Hammett. He was playing for a band he had formed called Exodus. Metallica got word of him through a friend of theirs who had seen Exodus play at a show. After approaching him...he also made no hesitation in joining what would later be the biggest metal band in history. This is the group that would make the band, and rise to stardom.

They had no money when arriving in NYC, so they had to live with the promoter at his own house till they got enough to live on their own. After months of searching and playing small clubs, they got a record deal for what is now known as Kill 'Em All. The original title for the album was Metal Up Your Ass. Due to the nature of this title, the record company wouldnt let it be used...so the band had the feeling like they wanted to Kill all the record executives....thus the name Kill 'Em All came to be. The record was made of 2 cover songs and all the songs on their demo, which were all written before Kirk Hammett came to be in Metallica. This album sold fairly well but not nearly as well as they would have liked it to. But they did make enough to tour small clubs and move out of the promoters house.

After the minor success of their first album, and after the touring in small clubs, they went right back to the studio and began recording Ride The Lightning. The band was now a tight team, and worked closely and well with each other like a well oiled machine. Ride The Lightning took about 6 weeks to record, which isnt long by recording standards. The album was released and sold very well, so well in fact that they were even surprised about it. This album would be the album that set the stage for Metallica's style and sound. The monster had begun to grow.

When they had finished the promotion tour for Ride The Lightning, they again went back into the studio to begin recording on their next epic, entitled Master Of Puppets. This album was their longest and best by far, and got them a seat on the Ozzy Ozbourn tour as an opening act. This is where the band became known and started to become the monster that they are today. Unfortunately....fate was not on their side....for one day while on their tour bus, riding through Switzerland, the bus skidded off the road, throwing Cliff Burton out the window and killing him as the bus landed on top of him, killing him instantly. The band was now faced with a decision, to quit, or to go on because thats what Cliff would want them to do. They were flooded by fan mail, people sending their condolences, and also asking that the band go on in the memory of Cliff. And thats exactly what they did.

Now they are faced with the problem of finding another bassist. Noone could ever replace the man that Cliff was, but they had to search hard for a replacement that would fit into the machine. A replacement that would continue the epic. This replacement was to be Jason Newstead. He was playing for a band called Flotsam and Jetsam when Metallica approached him and asked him to join the band. He also joined without hesitation. So with their new bassist, nicknamed Jason Newkid, they cut a small LP called Garage Days Re-Revisited. This was to get Jason used to the way the group played and worked, to break him into the ways of Metallica. He knew he couldnt fill the shoes that Cliff had left vacant, but he did know he could fill them with his own style. With that...he became a very important part of the group, a part of that machine that would make history.

After finishing Garage Days, they went back into the studio yet again to make another epic. This album was entitled ...And Justice For All. An album that blasted the judicial system of our country, and all aspects of the U.S. Gov't. Most songs on this album were 7 minutes or more...and the title track was an incredible 9 + minutes. On this album was a tribute to Cliff named "To Live Is To DIe". These words were Cliff'. words. The following is the only words in the entire song. "When a man lies, he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which some men miscall their lives. All this i cannot bear to witness any longer. Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home? " . This is the greatest tribute one could give a man. For this album, Metallica did a monstrous 2 and a half year tour, covering more than 25 countries and 250 shows. After which they took a much needed break.

When they had rested their weary selves, they began recording on latest album. Simply named "Metallica". This album is the simplest, and most straightforward of them all. With catchy riffs and simpler, shorter songs, it gained public recognition and airplay. Because of this fact many people say that Metallica had "Sold Out". I, for one, do not agree. I believe that they just decided to stop playing 30 minutes epics and wanted to do simpler more stylish and skill oriented music. Because it gained public recognition and airplay does not mean that they sold out. This tour is still going to this date, and will continue for a few more months.

After this tour they will be taking a break from each other for a while. And after that noone knows whats going to happen. But for now we all have their previous albums to keep us busy. This was the rise that Metallica made from a no name nothing band to the killer machine you see before you today. The memory of Metallica shall live on long after the band is dead and buried. I must personally thank Metallica for getting me through some tough times, and inspiring me to start playing the guitar 5 years ago. I owe them alot.

Thats it for this issue. Hope ya enjoyed the article, and i hope it informed you a bit about the band and what they were and have become. Till next time we meet...METAL RULEZ! :) And i gotta say a special thanks to D'Mitri D'Milo for all the work and help he has given to me on my BBS... Thanks D'...couldn't have done it without ya ;). Peace all....

Ansi Ripping - The Forbidden Success

It seems that it is every single month that it happenes. There is some new Joe that thinks he can fool the hundreds of artists that will look at his work. I bring to you the very important topic of art ripping.

Many think that it is just in Ansi art that this occurs. Recently a musician that i knew was ripping as well. He got caught, and is now living with his consequences. Ripping may bring you stardom for a while, but once it gets out into the open, there really isn't anything that anyone can do to bring you the respect that you once had.

It is quite sad that in our world, the pressures are so great that one feels that he/she must be as good as their idols. The pressures in 'cyberworld' are so great, that they sometimes even surpass that of the pressures of reality. In my estimation, that is where it is the worst case senerio. When the effects of cyberworld, numb those of reality. This is the main reason of ripping.

A comparison to that of reality and here are this: in reality, one feels the pressure of others to be successful. And too often our society is brought up to beleive the idiom of: "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" or a "me first" society. And often, this carries over into Cyberworld. Artists feel as though they have to be successful, and they will do anything to get to the top. Perhaps stealing anothers work is the only means that is feasible to that artist.

The stupidity of these artists is so great and so extremely obvious to actually steal anothers work and think that they will get away with it. Obviously the person who origionally did the peice of art would recognize the work immediatly, as well as his group that released the work. For one to seccessfully get away with such a task is almost imposible. If anyone in the group of which that artist released this work sees the similar ansi, they would be suspitious and may even look over similar ansi and immediatly would recognize the work, and thus, blow the rippers cover.

What is really sad to me is when the artist rips the ansi, and does so from another local group. This was such the case in my great area code.

A little group, which will remain nameless ofcourse, riped a few pics from Union which is also in my area code. I mean the guy didn't even look around for a group wich he though might not notice. I think it is pretty much the smaller artists in the scene that are trying too hard. I have this to say to them: Everyone has times at which they are failures. There is a saying that goes: Practice makes perfect. This is not entirely true, but it should read: Practice makes better. If you want to get better, practice you skill. Don't fall to others that think they will get away with, what is essentially murder in our scene.

Something that is extremly disturbing with Ansi ripping is the integrity of the artist. Are they really that committed to a team that wants success and glory. Can they be trusted? Are they telling the truth? It seems to me that anyone that would stab their group in the back to gain stardom is by far, not trust worthy. When you go through a whole month of orginization and communication, you feel as though there is some sort of bond that is formed between you and the other artists. I am questionable to those that would rip an ansi and would still be able to look their fellow drawers in the eye.

If you are contimplating ripping an ansi, please think otherwise. It will you good in the immediate future, but it is inevidable that you will soon be cought by the origional artist that drew the pic. You are hurting the scene, you will hurt your name, but most crutially, you will be hurting your own group that took you in in the first place. To all those that draw origional ansis, I take my hat of to you. Great job, and keep up the good work while always keeping an open eye to those that think they are immortal.

It's about time someone gave credit to the world's greatest substance.

SPaM. By now, you're probably saying "Ohhhh... SPaM! So what!?" well,

here's what:

57 years ago in Austin, Minnesota, SPaM was born. Made of pork and ham, salt, water, sugar and sodium nitrate, SPaM took it's form: a sort of blob shape which resembles absolutely nothing. Little did the creator of SPaM know what he had just done.... he did the obvious. He created a meat substitue for those who prefer a slimey, yet tasty treat, but that's not all. He also created a sort of idol, a channeling instrument to the gods. Yes! SPaM *IS* the link between us, mere mortals, and the SPaM Gods. Using SPaM you can call upon Spamcules <Spahm˙ku˙leez - Half man, half SPaM god> or Spames <Spahm˙meez - god of the radioactive green jell in SPaM> and learn of the great mysteries of SPaM. This pratice is not understood by many, but there are a few who can comprehend the power of SPaM and how to use it. By now, I'm sure you're all saying, "Gee, how can I channel my thoughts to the SPaM gods?" Well I can't tell you that. You see, the shear magnitude of the power of SPaM could easily destroy the world. (That is what the jell coating is for, to make sure none of the power leaks out.) If the secret of SPaM fell into the wrong hands, it would be devastating. By the same token though, SPaM in the proper hands can be used to make you a great user, write cool MODs, or even fulfill your every hunger.

But be on the lookout for imitation SPaM. Yes, there are fools out there who think they can not only control SPaM, but make a better SPaM! Obviously, they cannot. Treet(tm) has attempted this blasphmy! Using mostly chicken, Treet tried to make another meat subsititute. Needless to say, they failed, and failed big-time! Thinking that they had mastered SPaM, they used chicken to conjour a supposedly more powerful substance than SPaM. This angered SPaM. SPaM decided it needed to have a contact on earth to deal with this problem. Searching the soul of every man, woman, and child to find someone truly dedicated to SPaMology (The study of SPaM.), SPaM discovered Khyron, currently a member of [ACiD, DistorSion, and KLF]. A then unknown, aspiring user was summoned by his can of EuroSPaM (The round version of SPaM still produced in Europe today). It told him of Treet(tm)'s plot, to destroy SPaM and all it's glory. Khyron, feeling honored, accepted the task.

SPaM sensing that Khyron was true of heart, blessed him with a keen knack for writing MODs and MOD variants. Khyron used this ability to become known throughout the world and spread the words of SPaM. With his growing popularity, Khyron decided he needed some help defending SPaM's majesty. He called upon some of his good friends, who were also true to SPaM to help him. This band of do-gooders became known as the Knight of the Circle SPaM. They exisit throughout the world, but only 2 per area code (except area code 513. This is due to the fact that Khyron's very, very, very special friends live there, and he felt that he needed the extra help in this area code.)

So, if you ever see any injustice done to SPaM, or if anyone puts another artificial meat before SPaM, it is your SPaM-given-duty to report it to the SPaM World HQ: New World Order (513)777-7726. [You know, cheap plugs are really cool... <g>] Please, SPaM needs you! All donations of SPaM cans to Khyron will result in him putting a blessing on you, and SPaM will always look favorably upon you. You may always reach Khyron via E-mail him via the internet at "burger@iac.net", to learn how you can help SPaM.

May the way of SPaM lead you to happiness.

Film: The Fortress

Rating: ** [2/5]
Starring: Chris Lambert, Kurtwood Smith, Loryn Locklin, Jeffrey Combs, Clifton Gonzalez, Tom Towles, Vernon Wells

Directed by Stuart Gordon
Now i know why this movie wasn't in the theaters. This movie makes absolutely no sense what so ever. It takes place in the future when the earth

is a more fragile planet and the governement must control the population. The restriction is 1 baby per Female, anyone who violates this law gets 30 years in The Fortress. The whole movie is about the prisoners trying to escape from The Fortress. The plot has no point really and the movie has no meanning.

The acting in this film is the worst i've seen yet. It's not bad on the excitement side considering they're trying to escape the whole time, but besides that it's really pointless. I would have to say that Chris Lambert was the only actor that kept this movie alive (and luckily he's the main character). He play's the part of John Brennek, the father of an illegal baby. All the other actors look like they're reading their lines for the first time. They don't get you into the mood that you should be in for a film like this. I think the movie has potential..it just needs a better cast.

I would recommend this movie to those who enjoy non-stop action(which it still is lacking), but besides that i would say it is a waste of good money. I found it more amusing to watch my dog chase its tail =>.

Film : Forrest Gump

Rating: **** (out of five)

Starring: Tom Hanks, Sally Field, ...

Directed by Robert Zemeckis

I am suprised. When I saw the commercial for this movie I thought it would be another boring film about a retard and the troubles in his life. But I was wrong. This film is uncontrolably hilarious and unbelieveable. Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) is the luckiest man on earth. Throughout his whole life he does absolutely everything that one person could possibly do. I don't want to give away the movie by telling you the parts but throughout the whole film

Forrest Gump does things that are soo stupid you can't help but laugh.
The acting in this movie is the best I've seen in a long time. Tom Hanks does an amazing job at playing the role of Forrest Gump. All the actors in the film were good. Besides from there being really no point to the movie, this film is worth its while.

11/94 review
This months didn't seem quite as good as a few I've seen previously this year. I think maybe the ol' ACiD fellas are getting a little lazy, but we'll see come December. Although not up to par with the quality I've come to expect from ACiD, the pack was still very good. Only gripe I have (Which I've had for quite some time now) is the Member Listing. Same old thing, over and over and over again. Oh well, maybe next year.

-------------¬----------¬-----------------------------------------------------
Filename | Rating | Description / Opinion
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
AE-TF1.ANS | ****** | WOW. This is the kind of thing you grow to expect
| | from ACiD. Alter Ego strikes again with some bitch
| | artwork.
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
AL-FLATL.ANS | ***** | Pretty nice. Looked sorta sloppy, but overall it had
| | a nice look to it. Pic was nice, but the font, looks
| | like "FLAP-LINED REALITY," but nice nonetheless.
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
AL-TF1.ANS | ***** | Good looking pic, man. And that font was the most
| | k-radest of semi-k-rad fonts I've seen in a while.
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
LD-UI1.ANS | ****** | Very nice. Very well done. Spidey looked ready to
| | jump out the screen. Font looked the same as AL's
| | TerraFirma font, but good.
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
SI-DR3.ANS | *** | The shading and fx were nice. The whole pic would be
| | nice if I could understand what the hell it was. The
| | font? G E N E R I C.
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
SM-PR1.RIP | *** | Cute. (I've come to expect better from Smooth, the
| | mighty master o' RIP).
| |
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
SO-EACD1.ANS | **** | Effects were superb, but not enough pic. And I was
| | not all that fond of the mediocre font. I've seen
| | better from Somms.
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
SS-AGORA.RIP | *** | Yet another pic with nice fx, but it wasn't catchy
| | enough. All I saw was the back of some soldiers'
| | heads and some wierd font. Hmm...
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
SS-BADL1.RIP | ******* | NICE NICE NICE. Very well put together, I liked
| | everything about this RIP.
| |
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
SS-GUILT.RIP | *** | Uhhhhh... I think SchizoSynth got a little lazy in
| | the middle of this one.
| |
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
SS-HLASY.RIP | ***** | Very cool. This is exactly the kind of freak-o wierd
| | shit I like. It was kinda hard to find the font, and
| | I had to read the SAUCE descrip, but still good.
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
SS-HRVST.RIP | **** | What is this? The Incredible Hulk on crack?
| |
| |
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
SS-LOKI2.RIP | ****** | Rad. A little red, but that kinda adds to the mono-
| | emotional effect this pic has.
| |
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
T2-FLI1.ANS | **** | Kind of small. Usually T2's are a bit bigger, but
| | hey, whatever. The pic looked like something from 20
| | years ago. I liked the font and the green slop.
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
TT-SS.ANS | **** | (?). Strange. Ill-shaded, and the outline could have
| | used some work. Another generic font, too. BUT, this
| | pic looks pretty cool in MCGA 256, so extra star.
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
CS-DSOC1.EXE | ******** | (Too bad I only allow 8 stars) CAT fucking rules.
| | This guy should have his own cult.
| |
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
CS-TF1.EXE | ******* | Not as good as the other one, but rocks the house
| | down to the bloody ground.
| |
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
US-WEEN.EXE | ***** | CAT's pics look funny in LoRez, but still good. The
| | font is hated, tho (I have that exact TTF).
| | <btw, WORSHIP CAT>
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
LD-TF!.COM | ****** | Oh mah fuckin GAWD.
| |
| |
-------------≈----------≈-----------------------------------------------------
TT-HRVST.COM | **** | TT, you need to be more like Lord Jazz. :) Just
| | kidding. This one was nice. (I just love those ACiD
| | side-scrolley things.
-------------¡----------¡-----------------------------------------------------

Welp, that's my review. If anybody has any comments, feel free to mial me, creep@gate.net. All opinions are not welcome, but I take them anyway.

greets: All the IRC pplz, all the Union guys, all the ACiD guys, and an especially huge greet to all mah budz at Shiver. :) Ciao.

---DISCLAIMER FROM Mista

Who This review of the December 1994 Raid pack is from only my point of view, it does not express the opinions of anyone that is submitting a review to the Evolution magazine. I might like something you do not, and I might not like something that you do. Please do not take my words as words of wisdom. This is only one opinion from a man who has only one hour to review two packs, and I am under pressure here.

The Raid December 1994 Pack Overall Rating :

ANSI : 8
Lit : 6
VGA : 9
ASCII: 7

Comments:

I liked the ansi mostly because I happen to like shading. Which there was a lot of it here. I liked the logos from ph_raid and wished he did a couple more in the pack, maybe more next month, hopefully. I didn't get much time to look over everything, but all in all, an above average pack of ansi's and I hope that I will get more time next month to actually look them over in detail.

I didn't like some of the literature. Over use of swearing. That is just my opinion. to me literature should be something more thought out, and a four letter metaphore isn't what I am looking for. A few were very good though, I wish I could recall the names. Sorry once again for my lack of description. The VGA was damn great, only two works I looked at, and I liked it a lot.

It really did look like a lot of work went into those. Hopefully more of this for the next pack that is released. That was great work, keep it up guys. The ascii was just that, your regular ascii. I am not much of a huge fan of non-extended ascii, so it is hard to give an honest opinion.

Overall : 8
Extra Comment : Very Good, once again, wish I had more time to work on it.

If you have a problem with what I have said in this article, or you would like to talk to me further about this review, I am on the IRC often with the Nick MistaWho.

The opinions expressed in this review are only the sole opinion of Aaron Rogers and are in no way shared by anyone else in the Evolution Magazine. If they do happen to share the opinion, it is not coaxed by Aaron Rogers in any way, and it is their honest opinion.

If your pack received a bad review, don't take it harshly. All groups do have a bad month and sometimes a bad group, and sometimes need to just go back and try again. It is nothing personal, this is business.

If you have something to talk to me about, then please contact me on the IRC and we can discuss this further. I am mostly on channel #ANSI. I will see you there.

---Review of the VOiD December 1994 Art Packet

Ratings:

ANSI : 8
RIP : 8
Viewer : 6
App Gen.: 7
VGA : 5
ASCII : 7
ANSI :

A great showing, some good talents here. After seeing another million of other ANSI packets, I still liked some of the nice ANSI's these people made, it was finally getting to me that they all were just no good, oh well. Still, a lot of shading, long pics, good all around, so a good rating of course.

RIP:

Two RIPs, and I liked them both enough to give them a higher rating. The one with the grey shades, that is the one I liked, the other one was alright, but this is the one that really made me like the RIPS in the VGA section.

Viewer:

Thing wouldn't view in 320x200 mode and it also wouldn't let the scrollback function work, so I had to just hit the Pause key on the keyboard to watch all of the ANSI, finally I just used ACiDViEW, which nothing so far has really got up and beaten into the ground. If they fix those two things, I would have given it around an 8.

Application Generator:

Nothing great, just your average showing for coding. The graphics were nice and everything, but way too many Applications use the same little annoying beep that really just makes me throw my hand in the computer and then pull the PC Speaker wire from the mother board, after typing as fast as I do, I got soon tired of listening to 'CLICK! CLICK! CLICK!' That I decided to just stop and start reviewing this packet :). Annoying, but average Application Generator.

VGA:

Logos in VGA are a good idea, but not taken far with this showing. There was decent VGA to recall from Weazel, but I can't recall (I got only a little while to finish another review, sorry, I need to get this done). The other two were like ANSI logos in a high res mode in a viewer, nothing special, just an average showing for VGA.

ASCII:

One of these days I won't review this anymore, it doesn't really make me think you are talented if you can draw up some ASCII that I can't read but still make it look semi cool, I like ANSI, .GIFs, and RIPs better, so I think I will just stick with that.

Overall Rating:

barely a 7

COMMENTS:

I liked the pack, a good turn around to get things rolling once again from the other packs. After seeing Lapse and KiMP and a few others, I wanted to see something good, and I found it in here. I didn't get to look at the pack all I would like to, but what I saw mostly impressed me, so the high rating. -It's not personal, it's business-

Comments:

I am sure you know what I am going to give this pack overall. This pack was just a good step from the normal. Instead of just being the regular ANSI group that throws a few VGA's in there somewhere, they made it a pack I would have liked to see long ago. A good Literature/VGA packet. The VGA is just as great as I have seen so far. My favorite is still the VGA Logo for Union tho. (Which is found in the Union November 1994 Packet, check it out).

The shading is what I liked in most of them, just great. If I ever get a VGA for my BBS, I will hire these guys, they did a great job.

The Literature was just as great, I would like to quote some of the actual pieces, but I did not get enough time to do that right now. All in all, I will be waiting for the second Jihad pack. I am seriously to think that these ppl have something going and will be taking over the art scene very soon. If I ever get to review for this magazine again, I will review their next packet, if it is out in time :).

Overall rating : 10 (D0H!)
Extra Comments : Just go and get it, it was great

If you have a problem with what I had to say about this packet, then please contact me on IRC, or call my BBS (that is private, so you have to find it on your own :) ). Let me know what you think of the above.

If your pack received a bad review, don't take it harshly. All groups do have a bad month and sometimes a bad group, and sometimes need to just go back and try again. It is nothing personal, this is business.

---Review for the Lapse November Pack for December 1994

Ratings:

ANSI : 6
VGA : 3
MUSIC: Not Rated
EXES : 8

ANSI:

I have seen better ANSI's. This is the first pack from Lapse that I have seen, and their ANSI's are not that great. Not a lot of depth. I am not sure, but there is just something missing from them, just not quite your great and wonderful ACiD/iCE/UNiON ANSI. I am not saying there is not something there, drawing an ANSI is harder than actually drawing. I just didn't like what this group had to offer for December of 94.

VGA:

Nothing much to say, looked like the ANSI's when they were in a higher resolution. The Crow pic looked like an ANSI in high res and just was put into another format. My opionion, a glorified ANSI. Would have made a great ANSI though.

MUSIC:

My GUS died, so I can not throw an opinion there, hopefully better than the ANSI and VGA's.

EXES:

I liked the EXE, especially the scrolling BBS ad, it was a nice touch to a very under average pack. That is what I see this group being able to do is the Executable files. Which would be something nice to see for a change, a group that does only EXES for jobs, packs, so on. The application generator was a nice one also. Zipping up your file and so on, making it ready to go, very very nice.

Overall:

5.7

COMMENTS:

This group really does have something for their Executable files. They have above average coders, and I suggest to persue that. Their music might just be dandy, but I haven't checked it out. Show me more next month and I will give my final opinion.

---Review for the Stile Pack for November 1993
Ratings:

ANSI : 9

ASCII: 7

GIF : 7

ANSI:

I like these. Nice shadings, long, good logos. Everything about them was just like your normal high quality ANSI's. There were a lot of ANSI's to go through, which is what I like to see, a lot of work put into a pack. I know that this pack is old, but I thought I would express that I happen to like just about everything about this pack.

One big fallback. The newsletter. A direct ripoff of the ACiD newsletter format used a while back. It would have received a 10 or a 9 1/2 if I didn't remember about the ACiD newsletter. The only fallback on the whole ANSI part though. It was a great showing.

ASCII:

I hate ASCII, but I liked these. Just like the good old norm ASCII, I would hire these guys to make my ASCII BBS ad if I didn't already have one, so bleh :).

GIF:

They were neat. One thing, why MCGA? I just couldn't get it. Why did they call them VGA's if they are in MCGA? I don't know why, but they were still a decent showing of talent, but if you are going to call it VGA, then put it in VGA mode guys.

Overall Rating:

7.33 repeating exactly :)

COMMENTS:

I liked it, your above average pack, this group does have something going and I will look forward to more looks at this group. Keep up the great work people! It is what makes the art scene keep alive with the original creations from the minds of the dimented. I happened to like it all.

That is the longest DIZ I have ever seen!

????

Well I have decided to write a little tribute on the best channel on IRC #ANSI. I don't know what has inspired me to do so but I thought it would be a kewl little article. Well here we go.

#ANSI is probably the best channel on IRC because that is where I like to hangout, and it is also where my friends hangout. Some pretty kewl people are on there too, like Smooth, T2, Hfaze, Ogre, Vengeance, Cardiac Arrest, Abom when he can get on, BadKarma, RadMan etc. My experiences with this channel are mostly good, sometimes some guys act like real pricks, but it comes naturally with the territory. Probably one of the kewlest things that goes on is the discussion on groups you can really get in tact with the art atmosphere. You get to here different stories on groups, meet different people, here all the latest information on groups, or people. You know all that fun stuff. That is where I was inspired to reopen Evolution Magazine, I saw how other mags like Terbium, Blur etc were successful. I dont know why but that is where I always manage to pick up all my members. It is great.

Anyways lets talk about different things that go on. The best are Op Warz.

Usually Op Warz occurs when people start to get op hungry and use Faust, or Textbox, or Nachos, to massdeop people and then make fun of them or something. I guess the idea behind it is to make others beg at your feet for Ops. HAHAHA i love it, when you have ops and you get a million messages "OP ME, OP ME" they sit there and beg. It is like you are god :). The only thing is I get pissed off when I finally get ops and then someone deops me ARGG, I cannot tell you how much that annoys me. I get so mad I get into fights with friends who have been there for a long time, for instance I got into a fight with Cardiac Arrest a really good friend of mine when he deoped me and my bot, we were like threatening eachother. It was really stupid, luckly we found the means to forgive each other. Now we are buddies again.

Some other kewl stuff happens to, like last week when we were seeing what meanings we could come up with for different groups. Some of these stupid things we do on #ansi is just really fun it keeps you laughing. I can remember when Vengeance and I started a great big Mother Joke war. Jeez everyone was sitting there insulting eachothers mothers. It was halarious. Anyways, I guess this article is pretty dumn but who cares. There is still some serious things that go on on #ansi like Recruiting, uhh.. ansi distribution, beggers asking artists for ansis or vgas whatever. #ansi is probably my favourite cuz i can get all the new packs on the day there released. It is great. Anyways I think I have bored you enough.

If you have never been on #ansi join it sometime it is KEWL! Cya l8r.

I would just like to say a special hello to some of my PALS: Cardiac, Ogre, Vengeance, Bloodshot, Onslaught, Hiro, Freelance, Gwi, Necro, Creep, Betrayer, Tguardian, Hfaze, Kurse and whoever else I forgot to add. There are so many of you guys. Well cya all on #ansi.

Mr. Elvis - Head of the Lit dept at Creators of Intense Art

˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙
PZ - Proze

ME - Mr. Elvis

˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙

PZ: Okay, it is 3:25 in the morning, and here we are doing an interview. What can I say, Cyberspace is a crazy place.. :)

ME: Hehe... Yeah, absolutely NUTS!

PZ: Just a bit of background to start off; what groups have you been in before?

ME: I started out in CiA. At that time CiA had no lit to speak of, and I was getting dissatisfied with the h/p/a/v scene. Khyron (then Burger Death) suggested that I should write lit for CiA since I have been writing poetry for 6 years. Since then I've been in Reality, then dropped it for Asylum, I have written for Psychosis, and Guilt magazines and I am currently starting my own EMag called: 10GND (Ten Ground and Down).

PZ: So in actuality, you have been writing even before you entered the Art scene atmosphere?

ME: I've been writing for about 5 years. I started back in eigth grade.

PZ: Wow, and are you personal friends with Khyron?

ME: Hell yeah. I knew Khyron back when him, Crypt Keeper (the guy that wrote Textbox) were local lamers. I have known both of them for about one - one and a half years.

PZ: So I guess Khyron knew of your writing abilities even before he started messing around with CiA?

ME: Well, he showed me some lit by Israfel, way back when, and I thought it was neat. So we both ended up talking to Tron (who is also local to me) and thus CiA was founded. :)

PZ: And when it was founded, how was the quality of art compared to now? Heck I even remember calling Khyron up, about a year ago, and he was telling me a little about the early stages of CiA. How was it in the begenning?

ME: At that time CiA was one of the smaller art groups on the scene. It was mainly based in Cincy and Jeresy (sp?). I would say right about the time I left for RLT that it stated getting bigger, and better in some regards. I still feel that CiA is too fat. I promise that CiA lit will remain only the best. :)

PZ: Too fat? ;)

ME: When I say "Too Fat", I mean there are too many people going along for the ride, too many mediocre people that shadow the good people. It only takes one person to screw up a pack.
PZ: Now, I know that when some people grab a pack off their favorite board, sometimes they neglect to even look at the literary pieces the pack has to offer. Do you feel that sometimes your work is underrated in that it is not even being givin a chance?

ME: I really don't care if certain individuals decide not to read my lit. There are the people out there that will take the time to read it, just like there are people out there willing to take the time to read this interview. If they don't like my lit after they've read it, I'm cool with that. If they don't like my lit just because it's something new, they can eat a bowl of Dig Em for all I care.

PZ: Interesting point of view. Now in your estimation, how important do you think poetry is the 'scene' as a whole? Ansi probably is the dominant field at which people view, but how big do you think poetry is in comparison with ansi?

ME: However big one makes it. It all comes from the individual. To me the lit scene is starting to take face, and demand some respect, but of course ansi will always be dominant. Lit gives me a channel to express my emotions. We're all a scene under one flag of unity.

PZ: Have you ever worked with the ansi/lit combonations before? Ansi seems to be the biggest attraction, but what do you think of ansi/lit mixtures?

ME: I believe I have worked with the ansi/lit combination, but it hasn't been for a long time. I'm bigger on stand by lits, just because that's how I've always written my stuff.

PZ: Do you feel that Lit is better off when it is single? I know there are some who feel that lit should only be incorporated into ansis. Personally I don't aggree, but how do feel about that?

ME: Lit is a very adjustable form of art. I look at the ansi art scene basically in the same light that I do "English Literature." There will always be those people who will never progress beyond a set rhyme and meter, and any freeverse or expermentation with literature would be determined bad. The ansi art scene is the same way, there are too many people out there that enjoy lit only in ansi format, and with the same old format. Ice is a prime example, but no one said that iCE had to be revolutionary, but maybe it's good to retrogress.

PZ: What would you say to head members of Acid or Ice who don't include any form of lit whatsoever?

ME: Acid never had any lit to begin with, and I can understand their basic philosophy, and Ice never gave their writers any support. Ice had some of the best writers, but they ignored them. In the SS minds every person that writes is in for the affiliation. Ice can go to hell as far as I care.

PZ: Okay, could you tell us a little about 10GND?

ME: 10GND (Ten Ground and Down Literary Review) is my little mag. It was originally conceived by Tron and myself about a month and a half ago, and it has gradually taken face to become the first and only review mag of the computer literrary scene. For the first issue we are featuring lit, (of course), short stories, reviews and an Israfel interview. Should be spammy.

PZ: Great. Now to finish off, is there any tips that you could give those writers who are breaking into the lit scene? Anything you would like to tell them?

ME: The best thing to do to become a good writer is to read the great poets of the past, write everyday, and drink plenty of milk. It does a body good.

PZ: Okay, well I know your a busy guy, and I would like to thank you for taking the time to talk with us. I'd like to tell ya to keep the scene alive. Without guys like you, unfortunately lit is a forgotton Art. Take care. ;)

ME: Thanks for the interview, I enjoyed it. :)

QZ - Quazar

˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙˙

PZ: Hey Qz! How are you doing?

QZ: Pretty good actually.. How are you doing Proze?

PZ: Just great.. We're trying to get this EMag going. I'd like to ask you a few questions, is that okay?

QZ: Sure, no problem.

PZ: Good. As far as I can tell, you have been in in the "Scene" for quit some time. How long exactly?

QZ: Hmm, thats a good question. I started in the "scene" back about October of 1992.

PZ: Wow, with what group?

QZ: I started in a wares (courier) group named "Mercury" which was led by a good friend of mine Captain Kaos.

PZ: Lemme guess: you were calling some "pi" board on your 300 baud modem right? ;)

QZ: Naw, actually I had just bought a USRobotics 14,400 HST modem, so that made me the perfect courier. Considering back then, everyone either had a USR Dual Standard, or an HST.

PZ: And when did you enter the art scene?

QZ: I entered the art scene in around December of 1992, I had just called Shihear Kallizad's board (HardWired), I knew that he was the iCE Courier Headquarters, and since I WAS a courier, I figured I would mix and match my abilities with a little wares as well as art.

PZ: And Shihear took you open arms into his then small art group?

QZ: Well, he wanted to know what I was capable of doing. (Remember, this was my first contact with Sk.) Shihear is a real cool guy, I guess I notice that because I am local to him. But yes, he did, basically.

PZ: And you then started drawing ansis for his group after you couldn't keep up with the madning-phone bills of couriering? ;)

QZ: Well, the phone bills weren't a problem. I started drawing ansi with Sk in iCE back in March of 1993, right at the Valiant era.

PZ: Could you give us a comparison of the scene when you entered as an artist, to now as we know it?

QZ: Hmm. The scene is much more "complex" now than it ever was. Back then, there weren't so many "idol's". When I think of iCE '92, I think of Tempus Thales. And thats about it. Like I said, "idol's" were hard to come by back then. :)

PZ: Really. And the Ansi's of then, compared to the ones we see today, what is the major difference do you think?

QZ: Well, the whole comic-oriented art deal happened in 1993, no doubt. Back in 1992, most of the art was either drawn from the mind, or just something simple and not so complex.

PZ: I really must grab an '92 iCE pack, and see mr Thales in his early days. Who in your estimation is the greatest ansi artist of all time?

QZ: Thats a good question. Well, I do have a few favorites, but if I really narrow it down at this very moment, it would have to be Somms of ACiD Productions.

PZ: Do you think he is the most talented, or the most creative? What seperates him from the rest?

QZ: I think he is the most talented. He can draw something, and actually make it look the way it looks when you see it on paper. I think he is by far the best at capturing an image, and putting it down in ansi blocks.

PZ: What is your opinion on all the new groups that are forming by the minuite? Do you think there are too many small unproven groups that need not be in a scene that has too many groups as it is?

QZ: My opinion has to be that there are way too many groups out there, if people want a status in the scene, they should work towards it. If you draw ansi, and don't get accepted by "Blah", why join "spam"? Work for it, try and be your best. There should only be about 3-4 art groups out there.

PZ: What would you suggest for the artists that are not good enough to make it into these 4 groups? Would you want them to wait until they are better before doing anything to work tward status?

QZ: Sure, why not. They can do indipendant work. It could be alot worse, they could be in the Public Domain scene, stuck drawing ansi with TheDraw(tm) fonts.

PZ: How big of a role do you think the InterNet Relay Chat plays on the art scene?

QZ: It actually brings most of the artists together, and makes contact alot easier. TRiBE currently is an IRC oriented group. Artist's in TRiBE send their work to RNDServ (Cavalier's IRC Bot), or TRiBEBot (My IRC Bot), that makes spending the (little) Long distance, virtually nothing. We can coordinate a group better this way. It also gives us a chance to talk with each other, and ask for assistance if needed. Or possibly ask another on IRC user about judgement on an ansi piece they are working on.

PZ: Do you think that the IRC is the wave of the future moving away from the more primitive Mail Networks?

QZ: I believe so. Everyone should know that Internet is the connection to the world. Especially IRC. If it werent for IRC and internet, I would have never received PsyberMan's work for TRiBE-13.ZIP, without paying the Long Distance to Australia (ugh).

PZ: Gotcha ;) How long do you plan on being active in drawing ansis?

QZ: Well, I've almost stopped completely. Right now, my main concern is Coordinating the TRiBE archive, and making sure all the members either 1) have access to internet, and 2) they are satisfied with TRiBE. But as far as myself drawing? Very little. Maybe a font here or there, nothing large.

PZ: How about these guys that take the scene way too seriously. Who care not about reality, only their emmeidate surroundings?

QZ: Hmm, I just think to myself how stupid that is. I used to take the wares scene seriously, but that was becuase of the great risk involved back then. As far as seperating the scene from reality? Man, all I can say is "Wake up! Its a dream land, this aint real life..."

PZ: Perfect quote to use on a few people that I know .. ;) What do ya do outside of "dream land"? What do you do for fun around your neighborhood?

QZ: I don't do much around my neighborhood, simply becuase most of the people around are young children. Umm, I like to go downtown (Atlanta) and shop for music, and odd apparel.

PZ: Quazar, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to talk with Evolution. I know you are one busy dude, and I look foreward to talking with you further sometime. Have a good one dude!

PZ: No problem. See ya on IRC.

<martyr> Allright. You ready?

<tinyz> yeah

<tinyz> sh00t

<martyr> Okay. Let's get started. First off, the basics. How old are you, how long have you been in the 'scene', and, what COUNTRY are you from? =)

<tinyz> i'm 17 right... i had my birthday last month

<tinyz> i've been in the warez scene for 7-8 years and i hooked up with the art scene at the end of last summer

<tinyz> err no... the summer of 1993

<tinyz> and i'm from poland goddamnit

<martyr> Last summer? What brought you into the ansi scene?

<martyr> Er, art scene.

<tinyz> well, i saw some ice packs... i mean i've always loved cool ansi on boards, but ice was just the shit... after i found out i could not do ansi worth a damn i started copying boards ads

<tinyz> that came in the warez that trickled down to me back in those days

<martyr> Copying ads? Ripping ansis?

<tinyz> no... i coppied asciis to get the feel of it... i never released it... i started doing original shit...

<tinyz> i still have my first ascii

<martyr> When did you do your first original ascii?

<tinyz> shit...

<tinyz> umm... proably somewhere around november/octover of 1993

<tinyz> it was a diz for my group, tzc (the tinyz crew) get you anny

<tinyz> =)

<martyr> the tinyz crew? is this the first sign of kts! ?

<tinyz> no

<tinyz> ok... get this

<tinyz> katharsis has been around since 1987... it was an amiga group in the days of way back...

<tinyz> and kts!pc started up in like 1992 or something... i formed up another group aclled rage! (which was like me by myself) and i dropped two packs....

<tinyz> then i joined kts

<martyr> So you started with tzc and rage, (both pretty much independent projects?) and then you joined kts and took over?

<tinyz> heh...

<tinyz> well kts was/is a warez group... i mean that's why i joined... i used to write cheats and shit... i don't think ANYONE expected katharsis!ascii to be what it is now... which is the BEST ascii group on the pc

<martyr> Probably the only well known ascii only group around.

<tinyz> well, i guess you could say that... 2 other ascii groups on the pc are remorse and jedi artists... remorse is well... the nME right now... and jA! is made up of manix and ranx, formerly of cOrp...

<martyr> So, what is your response to the sudden possible 'ascii threat'? Any hard feelings between you and any other groups?

<tinyz> naw... i mean i have to diss them and all but me and necr0 have an understanding... we be cool...

<tinyz> i guess it's sort of my fault... like before i came out onto the net with kts#10 pMk was the only other ascii only guy around... now there's like 69000 of them

<martyr> You consider yourself in part responsible for the sudden revitalization of the ascii world? I know you've inspired several artists... namely a Necromancer, co-founder of Remorse... ironic almost.

<tinyz> yeah... i'll catch shit for this but i consider myself the catalyst for the growth of intrest in ascii... i've had people bite my shit left and right, i've had people do bad copies of my work, but i'm cool with it

*** Signoff: tinyz (Error 0)

*** AT ABOUT THIS POINT, THERE WAS SOME MAJOR NETSPLIT THING ***

<martyr> (a few minutes later...) Ready? Last thing I caught was about you influencing the rebirth of ascii, and people biting you.

<tinyz> people bite my shit... but i think that it's well worth it... i'm glad to see ascii become a real "artfrom" on the pc

<martyr> And that it has. But some people are still against it. How do you respond to those who say that ascii is dead? That ansi has replaced it?

<tinyz> i don't think ascii was EVER alive on the pc

<tinyz> on the amiga it is alive and kicking, but on the pc, other than some dizes that i saw (ice and tribe) ascii has never been as big as it is now..

<tinyz> and ansi will never replace ascii as long as there are computers that don't deal well with 8-bit ascii chars... (like unix machines) =)

<martyr> That brings us up to the present of your 'career', but what plans do you have for the future? Where would you like to take kts! (and the rest of the ascii scene?)

<tinyz> to hell

<tinyz> =)

<tinyz> naw...

<tinyz> the first phase is over... i've legitimized ascii for the masses

<tinyz> i think it's time to take the second step

<tinyz> and that's to create a division between good ascii and bad ascii. some of the stuff people out there consider good is such utter shit that i can't even begin to get down with it

<tinyz> i see katharsis!ascii being to ascii what ice/acid/union are to ansi

<tinyz> what vor is to vga

<tinyz> the best

<martyr> About ansi, what's the creative process like for you? By this, I mean, how much time does it take you, what do you do while making ascii, what 'inspires' you?

<tinyz> what inspires me... heh... i dunno

<tinyz> doing the actual ascii takes oh... 15-30 minutes these days... (it used to take me 5 back when i sucked)

<tinyz> the hard part is comming up with the original style

<tinyz> i do this by creating one letter, then woring the rest of the letters so that they match my first letter...

<tinyz> actually, i get really inspired when i see a REALLY good amiga ascii collection

<tinyz> like count zer0, vnz or godhead

<tinyz> (i gots 4mb of ascii now)

<martyr> You mentioned a 'division' of good and bad ascii. What 'defines' good ascii? I realize this is somewhat subjective, but there are some aspects that can be defined... readability...

<tinyz> yes, good ascii can be defined...

<tinyz> readability is not a factor tho... i mean good ascii can be readable by everyone or it can be so cryptic that the author stands over it and ponders... =)

<tinyz> sloppiness is a MAJOR minus... make your asciis stick... don't missalign things...

<tinyz> originality is probably the biggest factor... be original and it WILL be good... also, use 80x50 line mode... I CAN'T STAND all this 80x25 line shit... =)

Hey all... This be Quisling, as if you couldn't tell by mah handwriting... Sheit, I was told to write something really
keen for the info file, so blow me if you don't like it... I need a fucking black dress for the Rocky Horror show tomorrow (my girlfriend is expecting me to wear one) and I still haven't found one, arg!!! Some of you foolios take the art scene to seriously... if you read the newsfile in the UNiON pack you know what I'm talking about.. it's totally true though, most of us just put out art, if you don't like what you get don't complain... Esp when all of the art someone puts out is quality art and when you saw it the first time you jizzed over it (ahum SNEEVENOM/WIDOWMAKEREEZE) and then you see some later stuff and want that stuff instead... Shit take what you get and deal with it... Anyway...

I'll just list off the greets...

Hfaze, Venom, Widow Maker, Neurotic (thanks for the ansi), Zer0, 33, iP, Dwarrior, CheeseG (nice uh background for that VGA :), Taz, CyberDemon, Impact, Phoenix, J-Smoove, Taz's wife, mah GF (as if she'll see this), Darque, Narcolept,

Lifetime... and everyone else on the IRC...
