InterNIC Announces Its New WorldNIC Service

This is a special bulletin concerning an announcement from InterNIC this morning. It also relates to information included in the last edition of Poor Richard's Web Site News, mailed on March 27th.

InterNIC is the organization that registers .com, .net, and .org domain names. It's run by a company called Network Solutions, Inc., in association with AT&T and a US government organization, the National Science Foundation.

InterNIC has set up a new domain-registration service called WorldNIC. If you're planning to register a domain name, this service is worth looking into for a number of reasons.

  • You no longer need to provide domain-name server information when registering a domain. That means you can register a name without finding a Web-hosting company first. WorldNIC will hold the domain for you until you're ready to use it. (You'll pay an extra $39 for this service.)
  • If InterNIC holds the domain for you, they'll put up an Under Construction page that will display if anyone uses your new url.
  • You can register multiple domains at once. Select all the domains you want, then fill in the forms just once.
  • You'll pay right there and then using a credit card; they won't bill you.
  • They'll help you pick a domain name; enter your company name or some keywords related to your area of interest, and the system suggests available domain names.
  • The system encourages you to register matching domains. For instance, if you try to register greatbigwebsite.com, the system recommends that you also register greatbigwebsite.net and greatbigwebsite.org. (Makes you wonder what the top-level domains are for, if everyone's going to get matching subdomains). If you want to register those domains, too, all you have to do is click on the checkboxes next to the names.
  • The registration process is much simpler than the old system (which is still in use at http://rs.internic.net ).

There is an additional cost for using this system, $10 over and above the normal registration costs. So if you register a domain and assign it to a Web-hosting company's domain-name servers, you'll pay $110; if you let WorldNIC hold it for you, you'll pay $149 (the $10 fee for using the system, plus the $39 fee for holding the name).

Note, however, that InterNIC's registration fees are going to drop tomorrow, so these rates should, presumably be $80 and $119 respectively.

To reach the new WorldNIC site, use this URL:

http://www.worldnic.com/

Luckily WorldNIC have taken their own advice, and registered the .org and .net domains, too, so you can also use these URLs:

http://www.worldnic.net/
http://www.worldnic.org/

I guess they learned their lesson when they allowed a private company to register internic.com (see issue 004 of this newsletter for more on that little problem!).
