LETTER FROM SHAUNA

Tomorrow, June 3, is my birthday. I will turn 29. This means I am now "pushing thirty" and that makes me want to laugh.

I still get mistaken for a teenager. The youngest I've been guessed at has been thirteen. No, I'm not kidding, and it's happened more than once. The first time an old man did it, and I thought he was probably senile. The second time I was registering my kids for school. My mother came along for the ride, and a lady in the office thought my mom was registering ME. "I've already graduated eighth grade," I said with a smile. "Fifteen years ago."

My son, who turns eleven this September, begs me to be a chaperone for his field trips. He thinks it's cool his classmates assume I'm his big sister. He likes to pretend I am. My other son likes to brag that his mother plays guitar in a rock band. This is what happens when you get married at seventeen and have two children before you reach twenty.

It's nice to be thought younger. Our society places an emphasis on youth and beauty, and when people ask my age I am like most women and don't want to tell them. But why is this? It should be an honor to get older. When I was really fourteen I was full of angst, I hated most of my peers, and became involved in the occult. My friends were outcasts and juvenile delinquents, and due to my "eccentricities" and the fact that I always wore black, I felt completely alienated.

I'm sure that's nothing new to many artists reading this. Not all artistic types experience alienation as teenagers, but I'm willing to bet many do. Sadly, this extends into our churches as well. Mainstream society has often shunned musicians, writers, or those who don't fit some kind of mold. Churches can be as bad, if not worse than the world when it comes to pressuring people to conform to a certain look or dress. Our teenagers usually suffer most, because they are going though a stage in life where it's considered important to belong or have an identity. I'm not saying adults can't be cruel. Adults can exclude people and clique together just as much. However, adults usually bite their tongue in the presence of someone they view weird. Teenagers are more apt to shoot spitballs.

I no longer feel animosity towards the people I hated as a teenager. If this is time mellowing me in my old age or God working in my heart I'm not sure. Perhaps it's both. Or maybe it's because when I see some of them shopping they look fatter, older, and are still wearing their hair in big layered styles. Can't dislike someone who looks that darned stupid! (Ha!) All right, all right, that was a cheap shot.

Anyway, it's good to be twenty-nine. If I keep telling myself that I will surely believe it. It's good to be twenty-nine! It's good to be twenty-nine!

LESSON 1: THE MANDATORY BASICS


TIMING: Music is defined as the scientific study of time and sound.
Please notice the word „TIME" comes before the word „SOUND.‰ Timing is the most important part of music. Anyone can make noise/sound, but when you apply sound to a rhythm pattern, or timing, you make music.

There are many different timings in music. Some of the most common timings are: 3/4 timing = 3 beats per measure 1,2,3/1,2,3/1,2,3/1,2,3/... 4/4 timing = 4 beats per measure 1,2,3,4/1,2,3,4/1,2,3,4/1,2,3,4/... 2/4 timing = 2 beats per measure 1,2/1,2/1,2/...

When listening to music exercise your timing by identifying the reoccurring rhythm patterns.

PICK A NOTE ON YOUR GUITAR FOR THE FOLLOWING RHYTHM NOTES. COUNT EACH RHYTHM OUT LOUD, PICK/(PLAY) ONLY THE BOLD NUMBERS, AND LET THE NOTE RING OUT FOR THE DURATION LISTED. THE FOLLOWING RHYTHM IS WRITTEN IN 4/4 TIMING, ALSO KNOWN AS COMMON TIME.

THE WHOLE NOTE = HOLD FOR 4 BEATS

HALF NOTE = HOLD FOR 2 BEATS

Pick a note for each beat.

EIGHTH NOTE = HOLD FOR 1/2 BEAT
Because an eighth note is half a beat in duration, you must now divide your counts. Instead of counting 1,2,3,4, add the word „AND‰ between each number count. Pick a note for each pulse.

THE MUSICAL ALPHABET: The musical alphabet consists of 12 notes.

*Notice that the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 10th, and 12th notes have 2 different names.
For example, the 2nd note can be an A#(sharp) or a Bb(flat). It is the same note but it has two different names.

The notes A, B, C, D, E, F, & G are called basic or natural notes.

The notes A#/Bb, C#/Db, D#/Eb, & G#/Ab are called accidentals.

THE MUSICAL ALPHABET AND THE GUITAR: Each of the six strings of the guitar have been assigned a specific note. The 6th string, which is the top and heaviest string is an E note. It is called the low E string. When this string is played OPEN (no frets), it will produce an E pitch. Each fret after that will bring you to the next note in the musical alphabet.

EXAMPLE. If you play the 1st fret of the 6th string it will produce a F note, the 2nd fret will produce a F#/Gb note, 3rd fret will produce a G note, next a G#/Ab note, then A, the 6th fret will be an A#/Bb note, 7th fret B, 8th C, ETC... Once you reach the 12th fret the musical alphabet will repeat itself starting with the E note.

The 5th string open is an A note.
The 4th string is a D note.
3rd string is a G note.
2nd is the B string.
The 1st string is the high E string.

THIS CHART SHOWS HOW THE MUSICAL ALPHABET APPLIES TO THE GUITAR NECK. THE LEFT SIDE OF THE PAGE SHOWS THE FRET NUMBERS FOR THE FIRST 12 FRETS, AND THE RIGHT SIDE SHOWS THE FRET NUMBERS FOR FRETS 12 THROUGH 24.

TUNING: If your low E string is in tune, you can use the A note on the 5th fret/6th string to tune the open A note on the 5th string.

  1. Play the 5th fret of the low E string
  2. Then play the open A string
  3. Compare the 2 notes
  4. Adjust the pitch of the 5th string to match that of the 6th string/5th ret by tightening or loosening the tuning peg.

You can apply this to the 5th fret of the 5th string to tune the 4th string to a D note. Then the 5th fret of the 4th string to tune the 3rd string to a G note. The 4th fret of the 3rd string to tune the 2nd string to a B note. And the 5th fret of the 2nd string to tune the 1st string to an E note.

If your having a hard time tuning your guitar, I recommend an electric tuner. Electric tuners are inexpensive and will save you from the frustration that comes with playing a guitar that is out of tune.

If your guitar goes out of tune easily, or if it sounds out of tune when you play the higher numbered frets take it to your local music store and have a guitar technician take a look at it, chances are it may only need a few minor adjustments.
