Copy xbox 360 game into an internal hard drive

Well, in the previous article we learned how to use an external hard drive to play the xbox games converted by ISO2GOD. Of course we can also use the internal hard drive for this.

Speaking of internal hard drives, I'm going to take a moment to answer some questions.

I have an old XBOX 360, the FAT (PHAT) and I already have an hard drive attached to the side. It is "external". Can I install the games in this hard drive?

Here is a very interesting convention. The hard drive is actually on the outside of the console and on some models it is not even present, although its connector is there (it may be hidden behind the side trim).

But since its connection is direct to the console board, via a SATA connector customized by Microsoft, the convention is to call it internal hard drive.

In our example the used hard drive was HDD1:/ that is exactly the hard drive of a FAT console, i.e., the system itself identifies it as internal, hence the convention.

Let's get to another point: available sizes. The official hard drive sizes available from Microsoft are 20 GB, 60 GB, 120 GB, 250 GB and 320 GB (exclusive for Xbox 360S - the slim one). These hard drives can come with the console in its initial KIT or be purchased as an add-on. Please note that for consoles without RGH/JTAG only Microsoft approved* hard drives will work on the console.

With the RGH/JTAG the thing changes, the restriction of having to use hard drives homologated falls and you can replace the original hard drive with one up to 2 TB size, like those SATA hard drives used in notebooks. Just enter the storage option of the hacked dashboard and format the hard drive, entering the console serial number.

If you don't have an internal hard drive in your XBOX 360 this is the chance to have one without the above limitation. The cases can be bought second hand or on sites like eBay also find alternative versions very cheap:

Once you have one of these cases, all you have to do is put your notebook SATA hard drive inside and you're done!

One of the advantages of having the internal hard drive in the RGH/JTAG console is to be able to make use of game DLCs as well as run XBOX1 games. For DLC you MUST use the internal hard drive. I need to confirm if in SLIMs it is possible to make use of backward compatibility of XBOX1 games making use of the internal memory.

Back to what interests us, playing games! One of the ways is to make use of what was explained above, using an external HD but, in this case, using a USB stick to send the games to the internal hard drive.

Of course you will ask me, "Hey, can't I use an external hard drive to transport my PC games to the internal hard drive?

You can, but then I think it would be more interesting to leave the games in the external hard drive and use them from there, don't you think ?

I mentioned the use of the USB stick because it is very common and we always have one available. With 8 GB free at least one game can be copied.

But, the pendrive does not serve as an external hard drive in this case? Would not be the same thing as you just said, leave the game there and play?

It makes perfect sense and can be used yes, but because of the size restriction, using a USB stick fits more into the use of just being a means of getting the game that is converted on your PC to your XBOX 360's internal hard drive.

How do I copy the game from the USB stick to the internal hard drive?

Assuming you have read the guide so far, you can base yourself on what was used for the external hard drive, i.e. just copy the folder converted by ISO2GOD to the USB stick (or do the conversion directly to the stick).

Plug the USB stick into the console and turn it on. If it is already in the FSD you may need to refresh (reboot) the FSD for the USB stick to be recognized.

Go to the UTILITIES menu and select FILE MANAGER:

Inside the FILE MANAGER, on most modern FSDs, the look is this, two columns, with some buttons underneath:

I particularly like this structure, it reminds me of NC (Norton Commander) or Windows Total Commander. It is easy to manage and to know what you are doing.

Just to keep a criterion we will always call the source the left column and the destination the right column, so, as in the image above, navigate to the USB stick (USB0:) and select it by pressing A.

The content of the USB stick will be displayed. Move the cursor to the right window and make the same selection as before. Now select your internal hard disk (HDD1:). Its content will also be displayed:

Depending on what you have already done or installed, the content of your HDD1: can have many things.

In my case there are several folders that I use for testing and some junk folders as well!

On the internal hard drive, I DO NOT RECOMMEND to leave the game on the root of the drive, for a simple matter of organization.

Browsing my hard disk I have a folder called GAMES (you can create one too - with the name you want - to keep the games centralized there) and in it I will copy my game that is on the USB stick. If you want to create a folder you will now discover an interesting facet of the FSD commands, which also touches a security item.

Notice that to create a folder (directory - DIR) you have to press Y, but no matter how hard you press it, nothing happens. This is where security comes in: to prevent users from deleting, copying, moving files or folders, etc. erroneously, you need the use an auxiliary button to perform these tasks, which will also tell you which direction (or column) they should be executed.

Let's do an example: we want to create a folder in HDD1: which is in the right column, so we need to press RB and, keeping it pressed, press Y in order to create the folder:

By pressing the RB (Right Button) a RIGHT arrow is shown activating the upper line commands, called ACTIONS. As the action we want is to create a folder (Make Dir) in the right column, we press together the Y button and the screen for entering the folder name will appear.

As an example I created the folder TEST:

See that the folder was created in the right column as we expected. If analogously I had pressed LB (Left Button) the folder would be created in the left column, i.e. on the USB stick.

This feature of having to press a second button is quite interesting and already explains why we have two assignments for the same button in the File Manager menus.

Having explained how to create a folder, let's copy the game from the USB stick (USB0: left column) to the folder GAMES (here is just an example, in yours can be the name you want) that is on the HDD1:, right column:

We need to organize ourselves to do this, leaving each column in the folder we want. On the left I'm at the root of the USB stick where it has my game to be sent to the right column, on HDD1, but I want it to be in the games folder, so I'm going to navigate to it and select it, displaying its contents:

With the columns ready, let's start copying. Take the cursor to the right column and leave it over the game folder:

As explained above for creating a folder, I press RB and keeping it pressed, press A, thus indicating that I want to copy what is under the cursor on the LEFT to the destination on the RIGHT, so it is important before we start the copy to have prepared the folders/disks. Once the choice is made, the process begins:

Depending on the size it may take a few minutes. After the copy is finished a success message is displayed:

And the folder already appears copied at its destination:

As in the beginning, when we talked about the external hard drive, we showed the way to tell FSD where the games are, just go to the XBOX 360 GAMES menu (exit the File Manager by pressing B) and your game will be there to be played!

If some curious person searched the game ID he saw that I did not use the game from the previous example (because of the size of the USB stick available for the example) and found that the game is Death Spank, an XBLA game. This serves as another example, showing that by this method we can not only copy XBOX 360 games, but also DLCs and XBLAs.

DLCs will get special treatment which will be given in the continuation of this guide. One more way to install games has been demonstrated!!!

This guide will still be supplemented on a daily basis. We will have another option for conversion, installation on internal HD, etc.

Be sure to come back here to see the development!
