How to reduce PSX game size without lost data (BIN -> ISO/MP3)
Hi all!
I write this little guide because I verified this method works and resolve my problem of free space on HD, so I want to share this tips with you.
The purpose of this guide is to reduce the size of a PSX game that use AUDIO TRACK ( CDDA ) instead of XA tracks.
With this method you can put many more games on ONLY ONE DVD!
NB: This method is the same used for SegaCD/Saturn/TurboGrafx16 except that the PSX use Mode2/2352 as data track!!
- First of all download "CDmage" (i use version 1-01-5) and install it on your harddrive.
- Open CDmage and select File -> Open.
- Double-click on the .cue (that care the game uses CDDA data!)
- Click on Edit -> Select All.
- Click with the right mouse button on the tracks window and, from the pulldown menu, select Extract Tracks.
- Select Mode2/2352 as data track, and Wave as audio track. then click Extract.
- now you can use tools like OggDropXP to convert the wave file to .OGG, or use other tools to convert wave to mp3 etc.
And you can use WinRAR to compress the .tao file (the file who contains the data track).
To mount a CD-Rom image in ISO/MP3 (or ISO/OGG) format you have to convert the mp3/ogg to WAV and create a CUE file like this:
FILE "Track01.tao" BINARY
TRACK 1 MODE2/2352
INDEX 1 00:00:00
FILE Track02.wav WAVE
TRACK 02 AUDIO
PREGAP 00:02:00
INDEX 1 00:00:00
FILE Track03.wav WAVE
TRACK 03 AUDIO
PREGAP 00:00:00
INDEX 1 00:00:00
FILE Track04.wav WAVE
TRACK 04 AUDIO
PREGAP 00:00:00
INDEX 1 00:00:00
[...]
then mount the cue with DaemonTools!
(take care for the file names!!)
You can burn it with burn apps like Nero, too.
I have used this method to convert Ridge Racer from CUE/BIN to ISO+WAV (compress in RAR+OGG). The original size was about 500 Mb, after the conversion in TAO/WAVE and compression in RAR/OGG the size was reduced to 37mb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this method seams to works at 100% also on a real Playstation.
Many games for SegaCD, SegaSaturn and PCEngine are all in this format, I don't know why there are no PSX games in this format.
Surfing on internet I found no PSX game in ISO/MP3, is it because this method is not good at all?
the game works good and play audio tracks, ... the game boots on a real PSX, ... the game is much smaller.... what's the problem?
