CHARGE OF THE GODDESS
I who am the beauty of the green earth,
And the white moon among the stars,
And the mystery of the waters,
Call unto thy soul:
Arise, and come unto me.
For I am the soul of nature,
Who gives life to the universe.
From Me all things proceed,
And unto Me all things must return;
And before My face, beloved of gods and of men,
Let thine innermost divine self be
Enfolded in the rapture of the infinite.
----Doreen Valiente
The day of birth for the Lord Jesus Christ is soon upon us again.
Mind you the Christian calendar was not one of the more accurate systems at
the time and the true date is now questionable. Along the lines of the
birth for the savior of the world, well for those who live in the first
world at least and live in the Christian minority of a greater philosophical
continuum, I would like to review the birth of umÖ everything! Think of
this as a crash course in astrophysics, Monty Python-style.
The universe is believed to have begun as a single singularity in the
void of space. All matter was packed into an infinitly dense point about
twelve billion years ago, give or take a week. That packet of matter
exploded forth into the void and created the cosmos and time as a measure of
change. Before long, matter coalesced into gaseous balls forming billions
galaxies containing disks of matter that would each yield billion of stars
and their satellites. Around one unspectacular star, called Sol, a planet
was formed that would yield organisms of alleged higher consciousness. The
planet was hot and magma spewed up to the surface, and a long period of
cooling began. If things weren't tough enough here, a planetoid smashed
with the sphere and formed its dark gray moon. God created life in seven
days and over the years became bitter and destroyed most of it on four
separate occasions of mass extinction. A savior was born in the Holy land,
some wise guys showed up with gifts, people were persecuted for explaining
the order of nature, and now we push people out of the way to get to the
last Barbie doll at the store to celebrate his birth.
Many of the traditions linked with Christmas have pagan roots. It's
also about the time the classic gods of Attis, Adonis, and Osirus died and
were reborn. Just a few days before Christmas every year is the first day
of winter, winter solstice, when the northern hemisphere of Earth is facing
farthest away from its star the sun (even though Earth is closer to the sun
in December than it is in June). This is the shortest day of the year
unless you're a bastard in some backwards nation like Australia or New
Zealand. The Pantheist and Pagan name for this day is Yule. Sound
familiar? This occurs every December 21st or 22nd.
I will not bore anyone with details of holiday ceremonies. However,
I would like to raise awareness to the order that is the universe on a day
that is significant during the holidays to not humans, but to our planet.
So when life gets you down, look straight into the sun and blind yourself
with not the knowledge of thermal forces allowing photons to miraculously
create warmth on your epidermis, but to appreciate how a star going nova two
thousand plus years ago inspired some guys on camelback to come to worship
Jesus H. Christ. The power of nature is great and is reflected in the River
Nile reflected in the evening sky as our galaxy the Milky Way.
All things are cyclic and with all scientific knowledge of cloning
techniques, the discovery of extra-solar planets, the International Space
Station, and people's ability to talk on cell phone while driving and
simultaneously eating fast food from McDonald's; we could still be wiped out
for good if an asteroid the size of a house collides with our pale blue dot.
And on that note, have a Happy Yule this December 21st.
Peace on Earth, good will to everything!
