Upon emerging from close confines of chrysalis
--life more than half over--a butterfly remains,
forced to linger another day as it adapts to new
body, wings heavy with metamorphic residue.
Vulnerable, during this stretch of hours to the
dining pleasure of passing birds or even errant
breezes which might snag those unfamiliar wings,
send new beauty without purpose into dusty death,
might a butterfly then remember, even yearn,
for caterpillar ignorance when it looked not
at the sky, merely moved leaf to leaf in mindless
munch, so plain it drew no unwanted attention?
Those who survive to feel the warmth of dawn
possess shifted paradigms; with strength they ride
the wind, dart in challenge among hungry beaks,
savor exotic nectars and know the pleasure of seed
pouring or filling, the feel of new life forming, egg
birth given. If a butterfly should dream in those
moments when life burns its final brightest, would
then dim memories be no more than nightmares?
