Meet Eric. He is 25 years old and has gone by the handle DragonMan
since his BBS days of the late 1980's. Eric is convinced he loves "arthouse
films" and fancies himself an intellectual, primarily because he read "Romeo
and Juliet" his freshman year in high school. At age 16, he along with a
few other BBSers in his area code started uNn (Underground News Network), a
t-file group that grew exponetially and caused his repuation in the
"underground" to skyrocket.
By 1996, the BBS was dead and Eric brought uNn to the internet (he's
yet to pay back the $70 his mom loaned him to buy the unn.org domain name).
With a much wider audience than BBSes could ever provide, DragonMan quickly
establishes himself as a force to be reckoned with in the brave new world of
web e-zines. He sits in his gloomy apartment every night, editing t-files,
drinking Popov and reveling in the fact that most of his female writers (who
comprise over half the uNn staff) want to sleep with him.
Three years later, uNn has released over 1000 files, is the most
prolific e-zine in history and has more readers than the old school group
which originally inspired him. "This is my legacy-in-the-making," thinks
Eric. "And I won't allow it to be ruined by those that write for it." With
all the balls he can muster, he proceeds to e-mail "you're fired" messages
to most of the staff members he dislikes, especially the female writers who
never got around to sleeping with him (which is all of them).
Envisioning himself as the Swamp Ratte of the 21st century, DragonMan
returns the zine to the roots it never had and uNn becomes a Phone Losers of
America style harassement zine. The "underground" raves about the vicious
e-mails he sends his victims and the libelous messages posted daily by
Eric's worshippers. The victims are unfortunately the former staff members.
By all appearances, everything is better than ever with uNn, but Eric
pulls the plug roughly 100 issues later, "because it's not fun anymore" and
wonders why.
