For years I've been plagued by something I never figured would happen
to me. I couldn't figure out if a dame was good-looking or not within the
first minute of seeing her. This dame in question was Gwen Stefani.
I don't really like No Doubt that much, but I will say their newest
album doesn't sound that bad, and Gwen Stefani's vocals on that Moby song
"Southside" are pretty good. But that has nothing to do with Gwen Stefani's
attractiveness. For a long time, I couldn't decide. Sometimes I'd see pics
where she looked damned hot, and other days she'd look terrible. She had
that punk rock look going on, which was good, but sometimes she'd just try
too damn hard, which was bad. Until three or so weeks ago, whenever she
came up in conversation I'd have to say "I don't know if she's hot or not,"
which is a weird answer considering most people can figure that sorta thing
out pretty quickly.
I saw the video for "Southside" a while back and my mind was made up.
Gwen Stefani is indeed a looker, albeit one who's prone to doing things that
detract from her appeal. I started thinking about this fact after the video
was over: it's not just Gwen Stefani who suffers (not really a good word for
it, but fuck it) from this. It's all sorts of women. Girls I see every day
can look pretty shitty, but if I think they're hot I can overlook temporary
bouts of unstylishness or just-outta-bed hoagliness. I just never did it
with Gwen Stefani, 'cause she's famous and as Americans we're supposed to
worship our celebrities. I've always prided myself on not doing that, but I
found myself doing it. I felt stupid.
So there it is. I think Gwen Stefani is hot, and even when she's not
looking like some pop-punk pseudogoddess, she's still quite appealing,
because despite her stardom, she's a regular dame who's entitled to a few
off days. Realizing I let my subconscious tendencies to judge celebrities
differently stop me from admiring a chick who not only looks good but can
sing kinda bothers me at times, but we all know the solution to that.
Drink a beer and watch the "Southside" video and all will be well.
