/Entre chien et loup/
they used to say with
a shudder for now
it is the hour
that blindman's time when
daypeople retreat
warily before the
horde marching to a
different beat, rhythms
heavy on wardrum
bass and hiphop sass
thundering from the
streets as cars slink,
a phantom cavalry
of Goths whose lusts
and appetites run
rampant among cold
neon fire, flickering
along parapets
of close shuttered shops
and businesses whose
pious merchantile
gaze is averted
towards the chosen
the wholly wholesome
ones who wake before
noon, commune over
bagels and coffee.
cluck homilies derived
from newspapers as if
from Holy Writ, then
move on to perform
the offices of
the day, those stolid,
ritual hours before
fortifying themselves
with take out or micro-
waved versions of meals
straight from Ozzie and
Harriet and Birdseye
and Mickey D's then
prostrating before
flickering altars,
prepackaged meditations
on life as it should
be accompanied
by hymns of what they
should want, yet some those
sacred duties abjure,
joining instead the
barbarians in
their revels; are they
allies or is this a mere
change of facades; does
every dog somewhere
deep inside want to
run with the wild pack
hunt, if but secretly,
as long as they can
return to sleep at
the foot of the bed
of their master,
clock?
