Barbie: one of the most detrimental tools of today's society. I can
remember owning my share of Barbies. Playing dress-up and going out on
dates with my Ken dolls, even if they were missing a leg or two. I loved my
Barbie, I wanted to BE my Barbie, little did I realize what a terrible dream
this really was.
Barbie, in her pink box and outfits and couldn't keep her warm
standing infront of the refrigerator, has become the standard of American
beauty. Instead of looking like someone a child could model themselves
after she presents the image of a whore. Parents don't realize the
subliminal messages they are sending their kids when they buy them a Barbie.
Barbie's appearance is of one a superficial brat. Girls get it
pounded into their little heads they must grow to look like Barbie. That's
what's socially excepted. Tell me have you ever see a "fat" or "ugly"
Barbie? No, because that's not what society wants. The size of her chest
in relation to her waist is absolutely ridiculous. If Barbie was real she
would be seven feet tall, ninety pounds, and her waist would be about four
inches in diameter. She would be unable to walk because she is too top
heavy to be supported by her tiny out of proportion feet. When girls are
constantly exposed to this image they begin to think it is the only way to
look.
Her social messages aren't very uplifting as well. In Barbie's world
she's popular, but only for her looks. Never have they promoted a Barbie
with any higher intellect. She's basically telling girls "Look like me and
you'll be popular, because that's what's really important. Why do anything
that require thinking when there is hair, make-up and clothes!" In Barbie's
world she's merely a play toy, something for Ken to look at. They'll never
make a women's rights activist Barbie because it would go against all that
Barbie stands for now.
Barbie is the devil. She is not a toy but a brainwashing tool
sucking the creativity and uniqueness out of the children and molding them
into plastic queens of fashion. I vow that my daughters will never own
Barbies, and if they do, there's a few things we'll need to get straight!
