VCM4: KAV based collections: mistake
KAV based collections: mistake
by VirusBuster
Some collectors only use KAV to collect. This is a bad mistake if you pretend to consider yourself a real virus collector.
KAV is the most used antivirus among collectors to trade and collect for several reasons: often updates, many unique detections, etc., but KAV is not enough.
The main reason for this is because KAV may detect different viruses, trojans, backdoors, ..., with the same name, so other antivirus is required to difference them.
Actually most collectors use at least two or three antivirus, which is good but not enough. Most popular alternatives for KAV are RAV and NOD.
RAV may disappear soon due support expiration by GeCad. It is well known that Microsoft buyed the antivirus so RAV has its days counted.
Why collectors do not use, let's say, eight/ten antivirus to exchange? Problem is time.
Years ago when there were a few thousand viruses was not a problem using several antivirus to exchange, but nowadays, after the big proliferation of malware this is not possible. Average collection is over 4 GBs so scanning with several antivirus is really time consuming.
Moderation, that is the solution. Instead making logs every week, it is better idea if every month you use one different antivirus to exchange. In one year you will be using up to twelve antivirus and your collection will not be KAV based anymore.
So one month you exchange with Avast other with AVG, then McAfee, DrWeb, Panda, etc, etc.
Try to arrange these sporadic exchanges with as many collectors as possible, so you rentabilize to the maximum the log.
Maybe would be a good idea to create in the virus trading community "the month of...", and assign to every month an antivirus. The first day of the month, the antivirus assigned would be updated and traders would exchange.
Well, just an idea... any feedback to virusbuster@terra.es.
