Characteristic: Size 43 cm. A robust black and white woodpecker.Body is black with contrasting white rump and belly. A male has a red head and a red crest, while a female has a black head and a red crest.
Distribution: India, the Andamans, China, Korea, the Sundas, the Philipines and SE Asia. Found throughout Thailand, except in the central and southeastern parts.
Habitat: Dipterocarp forest and dry evergreen forest
Habit: Seen solitarily clinging to tree trunks or boughs, busily searching for insects and wood-boring larvae on dead, standing trees. Breeding between February-May; it occupies a dead tree hollow, and deposits a clutch of 2-3 eggs.
Status: An extremely rare resident.
