Characteristic: Size 33 cm. A green woodpecker having long pointed dark beak; grey face and black cheek patch; uperpart and wings green; flight feathers adorend with white bands; underpart plain greyish green. A male has red forehead and black crown and nape; while a female all 3 parts black.
Distribution: Eurasia, India, China, Hainan, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and Sumatra.
Habitat: Evergreen forest, mixed deciduous forest, dry dipterocarp forest, pine forest, from the plain to 1,800 m. altitude. It lives only in the dry evergreen forest in Sakaerat forest.
Habit: Encountered mainly in pairs, foraging on the tree trunk and boughs for ants, termites, insects and insect larvae; sometimes it also eats fruits and nectar. Breeding is done in April to June; it excavates its own nest cavity and will lay a clutch of white 4-5 eggs. Incubation time is 16-17 days.
Status: Uncommon resident in Sakaerat area. It is a protected wild animal according to local wildlife law
