Characteristic: Size 28 cm. Its upperpart is greenish brown contrasting sharply with greyish underpart. Side of body is slaty grey, wholly barred with pale streaks. A distinct white band from behind an eye to the side of its neck. Bill is quite long, slender and decurved, dark yellow in colour.
Distribution: Pakistan, China, Hainan, Myanmar, Thailannd, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Habitat: Dry evergreen forest, dipterocarp forest and bamboo forest.
Habit: Mostly encountered either singly or in small flocks of 3-4 birds, foraging on a forest floor. It uses its long bill to search among leaf litter for insects, earthworms and other small animals. Breeding takes place between January-April; during which a clutch of 2-3 eggs is laid.
Status: An uncommon resident bird.
