Characteristic: Size 14 cm. Both sexes differ in general appearance from each other. A male is all black, with contrasting white patches on wings, rump and under tail coverts; while a female is dusky brown on the back and paler brown below; rusty rump and uppertail coverts and lack white on wings.
Distribution: Middle East, Southwestern China, the Philippines, Borneo, Java, New Guinea and SE Asia.
Habitat: Open grounds in dipterocarp forest, scrub forest and some agricultural areas.
Habit: Prefers to perch on exposed sites, such as dead tree tops, tree stumps, electric cables, telephone cables, etc.; where it waits for flying insect preys. Breeding between March-May, its normal clutch is 3-5 eggs.
Status: A rarely seen resident.
