Characteristic: Size 20 cm. Distinguished by an orange frontal patch; leafy green upperpart, yellowish green underpart. Bright blue shoulder patch is also distinct. Chin and throat are indigo-blue. A dark band extends from the lore, through an eye, to upper breast. Bill slender and downly curved.
Distribution: India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Sumatra and Thailand.
Habitat: Dipterocarp forest, secondary growth; Less frequently seen in rather open dry evergreen forest.
Habit: Congregating in small numbers at flowering or fruiting trees, devouring nectar, fruits and also insects. It has an astonishing agility in circling around branches and twigs. The breeding season falls between February-September; the normal clutch is 2-3 eggs.
Status: A comparatively common resident, mostly encountered in pairs or in small flocks.
