Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus)

Characteristic: Size 43-76 cm. Here occurs only a population with white ear lappet. A cock has facial skin and comb bright red; head, hackles to wings and back yellow with red streaks; belly black; tail also black with greenish sheen and the middle tail feathers much more elongated than others. A hen is strikingly different in being drab with brownish streaks; short tail and a much smaller comb.
Distribution: South Asia, from the Himalayan foothills to Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Indo-China, Southern China, to Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and Bali.
Habitat: Dry evergreen forest and in the ecotone between the dry evergreen and the dipterocarp forests.
Habit: Rummaging in small family flocks on the forest floors, searching for insects, seeds, fallen fruits and grass seeds.They breed in the dry season and build nests among grass tussocks and in bamboo clumps. The usual clutch is 5-10 eggs, which it will incubate for about 21 days.
Status: A common resident.
