Hurzlmeier malerei
From to the brochure:
There is actually a lot to admire and marvel at in Hurzlmeier's universe: carnivorous horses, all kinds of reptiles and a lot of bare skin, gigantic ducks swim through seas of fog past peaks, body parts and food fly through the air and Satan and the Redeemer cavort on images of saints of a very special kind.
In between, the artist himself hovers in the space glider through the wonderfully crazy scenarios.
Rudi Hurzlmeier is considered one of the great masters of comic painting. Together with Ernst Kahl and Michael Sowa, he made a significant contribution to the introduction of painting into comic art and implanted the technique of the old masters in cartoon art.
In 2013 the Caricatura Museum dedicated the group exhibition "Unworldly Painting" to the three of them.
Hurzlmeier's steadily growing work is made up of opulent paintings in which he plays with the elements of classic still life, nude and landscape painting, and uses them to create his very own fascinating, bizarre, disturbing, lustful and above all comical world in acrylic, such as he is looking for his own kind.
Hurzlmeier's small-format works are also works of great comedy, including classic one-picture joke drawings and picture stories, but also small sculptures and readymades.
Since 1985 Hurzlmeier has regularly published his drawings and paintings in the satirical magazine TITANIC, in alternating series with titles such as "Moderne Hochgebirgsmolerei" or "Aus Gurlitts Sperrmüll", and currently every month under the heading "Hier lacht der Betrachter".
The exhibition "Hurzlmeier Malerei" shows the best and strangest paintings from the past 35 years.
The show is completed by a selection of his drawings. A special treat in the exhibition is the treatise “Über das lächerliche an komischen Zeichnungen. Eine Doktorarbeit - quasi", in which Hurzlmeier scientifically reflected his own drawing with rich illustrations - a piece of art-historical basic research, and funny on top of that.
Here are some of the paintings present at the exhibition:
