A thousand years of history: the Kaisersaal (Hall of the Emperors) in Frankfurt
The Kaisersaal (in german), or Hall of the Emperors (in english), is probably one of the most beautiful place in Frankfurt. It is located in Römer (Roman), a complex of nine houses that form the Frankfurt city hall.
The Kaisersaal "hall of the emperors", inside the town hall, is the room where the negotiations of the electoral princes were held before the election of the Emperor and their banquets. On the walls there are 52 portraits of all the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire , from the year 800 until 1806. These portraits were painted between 1838 and 1852.
In the past the room was very beautiful. This is an old paint illustrating the Coronation Banquet for the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II in Frankfurt 1764.
The image shows a huge, very opulent room with a very high ceiling, probably an exaggeration of the artist to increase the magnificence of the emperor.
So was the room represented in the year 1816
Next is a picture from 1900 that shows how the room actually looks like. It is still very beautiful, but not as big as in the first picture.
and here some more pictures
Unfortunately, during the second World War the Kaisersaal has been destroyed :(
After the war, germans rebuilt it, but ...
The entrance of the Kaisersaal is located on a side street
where, in a inner courtyard, is this beautiful Renaissance-style external staircase.
Today the room looks like
definitely not the magnificent room that was in the past!
Luckily, the entrance was free :)
On the wall the pictures of the emperors of the holy roman empire.
Finally, a picture of the Römer Platz, as seen from the windows of the Kaisersaal.
