Fishing Survival Kit
The "Fishing Survival Kit", a small lightweight fishing kit you can make yourself and put in your backpocket. It consists of 1-400 yd spool of 8 lb fishing line, a small quantity of the 3 smallest leadhead jig sizes in different assortments of colors (about 5 of each), plastic jig bodies for the jigs for when live bait is unattainable, the smallest "Swiss Army" 5 function pocketknife (actually, a keyring knife), some needles, some "strike Anywhere" matches, a small machine bolt and wingnut, and a electrical junction box cover (round).
What you do, is take the spool of line, and remove the paper from one side... this exposes the voids on the inside of the plastic spool, and that is where you place all the other items. Once the items are inside, use the junction box cover and the bolt/wingnut to shut the fishing kit in. You might have to drill a 1/8" hole in the center of the junction box cover to string the bolt thru. for the most part, it's extremely straight forward...if you go to a store and buy a spool of fishing line, it will be self explanatory. One option to consider is to get a slightly stronger monofilament line for areas like Minnesota and the Northwest territories, where larger fish are commonly caught. Use your best judgement.
One last thing to mention is that small critters and birds can also be snagged with a hook and line.
