The
Sound
Site
Newsletter

Volume 1 #4 March 3, 1991 (P)
--------------------------------------------------

Note from the Editor
--------------------

Sorry for the delay in this fourth edition. Our mailing list has grown
to over 500 people and we also had problems losing one of our primary
sites. I hope to keep this newsletter monthly. This one is particularly
long. I have also made some formatting changes that should make it
easier to read. I hope you enjoy the changes and feel free to comment.

For those of you who subscribed prior to March 1 and did not receive this
by e-mail it means that the address you send us bounced. Please send
an alternate address.

In this issue

o Do you want to announce a new product?
o Sound Bits: A look at 3 new products
o Midi Information
o An interactive session featuring ROGUE
o Anonymous FTP sound Sites
o How to join the sound list
o List of MIDI Bulletin boards

Do you want to announce a new product?
---------------------------------------

If you have written a sound releated program that is SHAREWARE,
FREEWARE, or PUBLIC DOMAIN and would like to announce your program
to the world contact us. In addition to an announcement on the
sound-letter we will also see that your program is uploaded to
ROGUE for international access! And best of all its F-R-E-E.

If you are a commerical company want to advertise your product in the
Sound Newsletter, please contact Playmac Technologies for further
information.

If you wish for us to describe or evaluate your product, please
contact us for further information.

Why?

o Our readers are interested in the latest developments in the
sound field and by allows announcements of this sort we help
these people find the programs
o The sound-list is mailed via e-mail to over 500 individuals
around the world who have personally requested this info.
o We are also posted on USENET that has a potential audience
of several hundred thousand.

Sound Bits
----------

*****

Playmac Technologies annouces an upgrade of Playmac v2.00 to Playmac
v2.10. In this version, longer data files are supported.

If you are running out of memory with your data files, Playmac
Technologies advises you to upgrade. If you are not encountering
problems with your data files, upgrading is not necessary.

Playmac v2.10 supports the following:
o Organization of sound files (SND Files)
o Floppy and Hard Disk support
o DOS 3.2, 3.3 and DOS 4.0 support
o Ability to process longer Playmac data files

*****

FMSOUND.ZIP (Found on Rogue)

This is the Windows 3.0 sound program that supports 35 instruments but
only supports ROL (Roland) files on a computer with a Sound Blaster.
It plays in the background and requires very little overhead. Very
friendly to use and comes with an instrument editor.

*****

JMPLAYER (Found on Rogue)

This plays trakblaster and Amiga modules. It requires a little
programming to make the program files, but from the samples included,
it doesn't require any complicated programming. Contains a real time
spectrum analyzer and allows files of over 440K. It also has a digital
track and module display. Playback quality is not perfect, but of very
good quality. A few instruments are not supported, but are really not
that necessary. Leeched Holland I believe.

MIDI BBS's
**********

In the past we have received numerous requests for MIDI information and
locating of MIDI programs and support. Thanks to Eddie Anthony
(aa588@cleveland.freenet.edu) we now have a list of nationwide BBS
numbers you can call. This list is provided for you benefit at the
end of this newsletter.

An Interactive session with ROGUE
---------------------------------
[Editors note. As of July 1 Rogue is no longer up but this has been
left in as it is a good example of how to FTP from any site]

****
Please note that ROGUE is an independent site run by Michael Minakami
and is not a part of Playmac Technologies. All administrative information
should be send to Mike.
****

Many of you have questioned how to log into Rogue. This site is
different from many sites and by far has the largest sound file
and program collections. Below is a sample session on how to connect
with rogue. If your machine does not take the kfps-roble6-dynamic line
then simply 'finger minakami@neon.stanford.edu' This account will have
the current IP#. The IP# floats within a range depending on outside
variables and we have not been able to stabalize it as of yet.
