Note from the Editor
--------------------

Well it's official now the Sound Newsletter has gone MONTHLY again. I
hope to publish near the first of the Month. If you would like to submit
something please try to submit before the 25th of the preceding month.
As a result we are now expanding coverage and will cover commercial
programs and products as well as shareware/freeware/public domain
material. Commercial companies can either contact me for more details
or mail their product to The Sound Newsletter address below. All
submission become property of The Sound Newsletter.

July brings us many exciting developments and the official announcement
of the SOUND SITE NETWORK. This is a group of FTP sites, Bulletin
Boards and Authors dedicated to spreading the information and programs
for sound users everywhere. And I am most happy to announce the
grand opening of the NEW sound site at sound.usach.cl. This site
is now the official FTP-site home base for the Sound Newsletter and
also the anchor site for the Sound Site Network. Finally for all those
MOD/MIDI/MED sound file collectors Island CD Creations has created
the Sound Site CD-ROM which has thousands of sound files as well as
players for IBM/MAC/Amiga/NeXT/Sparc machines. The disc contains
a mirror of the Saffron FTP site and is under $20. Check the Sound
Newsletter #13 or mail duane@shell.portal.com for further information.

Also as always I am looking for column authors, program experts, or
people with Gravis, Pro Audio Spectrum, Soundblaster, Adlib cards to
help write feature articles and columns. Please let me know if you are
interested. I am looking to move the Sound Newsletter into a monthly
format allowing column authors a monthly column in which they can write.

Please use the address below to send comments and/or submission to the
Sound Newsletter (also note sound@ccb.ucsf.edu is no longer a valid
address)

*********************************

It is with pleasure that on behalf the of the Sound Newsletter and the
Sound Site Network I can announce the "New" sound site located at
sound.usach.cl. The site is using the following setup:

158.170.34.4
sound.usach.cl
Dec 5000 model 240
2.4 GB (300 MB reserved for the house of Sound)
Operating System: Ultrix 4.2 RISC
Actually running

Usage of the site was graciously provided by Juan Pablo Jadue
Jadue (JP). I would especially like to thank JP along with Duane
Takamine. Together the three of us spent many hours configuring
the site. We are also making final arrangement for another site
in Texas soon to join the Sound Site Network of sites.

Please note that sound.usach.cl is a "new" site and we are slowly
trying to build it up in an organized fashion. Learning from past
mistakes we have revamped the directory structure and are in the
progress of sorting through Saffron and other sources to build the
files on USACH. We appreciate all help in keeping the site up to
date with the latest programs. Please DO upload to the Incoming
directory and help us maintain USACH. Remember a FTP site is only
as good as it's contributors and users.

** Assembly 93 **
******************

Well all you multimedia buffs. Assembly 93 is here. Assembly is a
competition between some of the very best demo groups. Below is an
invitation to attend Assembly 93 furnished by the Future Crew:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASSEMBLY '93 THE SECOND PHASE - BE THERE OR BE ELSEWHERE!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

ASSEMBLY '93 - THE SECOND PHASE

(30 July - 01 August)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE MOVEMENT - ACCESSION - COMPLEX

FUTURE CREW

AGGRESSION

EXTEND

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last year the Assembly was a success, the weather was perfect and
we had a great time. The party, tripling the previous visitor record
in Finland, was with no doubt the biggest party in Finnish history.
This year we have made many improvements and we hope that we will
have as good weather as we had last year and to see you all there
again.
The Assembly '93 is arranged by The Movement, Accession and Complex
(Amiga), Future Crew (PC), Aggression (ST) and Extend (C64). The
partyplace is a school in Kerava (Finland) and the party starts at
10:00 in the morning on Friday the 30th of July and ends at 18:00 on
Sunday the 1st of August.

HOW TO GET THERE:
-----------------

First of all, coming to Finland from outside Scandinavia should be
quite simple if you do like this: Come by car or along with one of
the bustrips (cheapest ways) and first drive to Fredrikshavn or
Copenhagen in Danmark and take the short boat trip to Sweden. Then
drive to Stockholm and take another (day/night) boat to Helsinki
or Turku (Finland) and drive to Kerava. When you return, do the
opposite and everything will do well. When we organized the bus-
trip (2 busses) from Finland to The Party II in Danmark, the price
went as down as to about 90USD per one person. So, the more people
you have in your bus, the cheaper all the travelling costs should
be. Read more about the bustrips from the BUSTRIPS.TXT file.

Kerava is located 20 kilometers outside Helsinki and only 10 km from
Helsinki airport. The partyplace is called 'Nikkarin yl„aste' and
the address is Keskikatu 3.

If you don't come by car it is easiest to first get to Helsinki and
then take the local train K, R, H, N or T and get off at Kerava. The
train trip takes about 30 mins. From the station in Kerava it is a
400 meter walk to the partyplace. Maps will be at the train-station.

If you come by car then first get to Helsinki and drive out from
Helsinki to the North-East on Lahti-highway (E75). Get off the
highway at Kerava and make a left turn from the next intersection.
Then it's just to follow the signs we have put up and to go with the
flow. If you want maps then contact us.

If you come by plane then just take a taxi to the partyplace. It
will cost you about 70 FIM. If you can't afford that, then call our
Assembly hotline during the party and tell us your location and we
will pick you up.

We can also provide some kind of taxi-service for foreigners free of
charge. So just phone us in advance and tell us when and where you
will be in Finland.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

COMPETITIONS
------------

As always on these kind of meetings, there will be some compos. We'll
have the traditional Demo-, Gfx-, Music-, R-Time- and Intro-
competitions and some other compos like Frisbee-, Soccer- and Disk-
throwing competitions (Last year a C-64 guy set the World Record to
72.539m, nearly disqualified for not having an Anarchy demo on the
disk). This year the disk must contain a Kefrens demo according to
the recent changes in rules.

The competitors have to be present at the party in order to attend
the competitions and to receive the possible prizes.

The voting system we will use will be introduced at the party.

The competitions are shown on a big screen and we have a powerful
4 channel Surround Sound System.

We would like to thank Suomen Hi-Fi Klubi Oy Ltd. for the sound
equipment and Pro A/V Oy Ltd. for the great Sony data projector.

****************************************************
** ANNOUNCE: Multisound Users Mailing List **
****************************************************
By mccreary@ucsu.Colorado.EDU (Sean McCreary)

I would like to announce the creation of a mailing list for users of the
Turtle Beach Multisound PC-compatible sound card. Anyone who wishes to
join this list should send an email message to `listserv@lists.Colorado.EDU'
with the phrase

subscribe multisound <your-full-name>

as the body of the message. Please note that the phrase `<your-full-name>'
should be replaced by your real name (without the angle brackets). For
example, if I wanted to subscribe to the list, I would send a message
containing

subscribe multisound Sean McCreary

to `listserv@lists.Colorado.EDU'.

The purpose of the Multisound users mailing list will be to discuss
applications and techniques for using the Multisound sound card, as well as
to collect software bug reports and work-arounds for known problems. If
you do not own a Multisound, please be aware that the list is not intended
to help you decide whether or not to purchase a Multisound card. The list
is primarily for the exchange of information useful to Multisound users.
Non-owners are welcome to join, but please refrain from posting questions
that are irrelevant to the rest of us.
--
Sean McCreary University of Colorado at Boulder mccreary@ucsu.colorado.edu

*************************************
** The Soundblaster Mailing List **
*************************************

Soundblaster Mailing List.

This list is for the exchange of information related to *programming*
the Soundblaster family of PC sound boards. This includes, but
isn't limited to, hardware documentation, code fragments, inter-
esting techniques, new product information, Windows programming
tidbits, etc. This is NOT a mailing list for user support,
comparison shopping, sales, VOC file swapping, etc. Your cooperation
in keeping the list on track will be appreciated.

The list began as an unmoderated and undigestified list-- every
message sent to the list by a valid subscriber was forwarded to
everybody else on the list as a separate mail message. This
yielded a high-noise list, so benign moderation has been enacted.
Messages not loosely related to the charter of this list will be
politely rejected.

Messages will be archived in an archive called 'blaster' on an
irregular schedule, i.e. whenever I see that the number of
messages is getting large. Also, selected files containing
source and documentation will be put in the archive. See
below for more information on getting the archives.

Thanks are extended to Jeff Bird and the Soundblaster Freedom
Project, which motivated me to start this list, partially as a
means to facilitate communication between participants.

Administrivia
-------------
All list-server requests (including subscription/unsubscription)
should be sent to

listserv@porter.geo.brown.edu

Enclose the desired command(s) as the body of the mail message. Some
examples of commands include:

subscribe <listname> <username> - subscribe to <listname>
unsubscribe <listname> - unsubscribe to <listname>
help - get a list of legal commands
information <listname> - get an informational blurb about <listname>
lists - get a list of lists maintained at this site
index <archive> - get list of files in archive named <archive>
get <archive> <filename> - get file <filename> from archive <archive>

To submit messages to the list, mail your message to

blaster@porter.geo.brown.edu

This will cause your message to be forwarded to everybody on the
list. Note that administrative requests should NOT be sent to
this address, since nobody else wants to read them, and the list
maintainer isn't necessarily a list member, and hence may not see
your request. Also, please don't post copyrighted material,
unless you have explicit permission from the author, or the terms
of the copyright allow free distribution.

If you have further administrative questions or problems, send mail
to me at plutchak@porter.geo.brown.edu, and I'll try to help you out.

Review by: Dave Komatsu

World Charts is a multimedia magazine that is put together by the Future
Crew. The program supports Adlib/Soundblaster/Gravis soundcards and
256 color graphics. Using the mouse you can scroll through various
articles and reviews of demos was well as view several compiled charts.
All the while you can choose one of 3 soundtracks to play in the
background. "Darkness" and "Charts Overdrive Chip" by Purple Motion
and "Variance" by C.C. Catch. Each track creates a different mood and
provide a flowing background for the magazine. The graphics are
nicely done and you are allow to scroll the screen sideward using
either the mouse or keyboard commands. Among the reviews in this
first issue are "Jungly Kitchen" by Twilight Zone, "Panic" by Future
Crew, "DoWhackaDo" by Renaissance, "Delusion" by Sonic PC, "Birthro"
by Extreme and several others. The reviews were written by various
people and future reviews by readers are welcomed as well as future
articles. This issue contains interesting articles on the PC Demo
scene, 3D Studio, Assembly 93, ScreamTracker 3.0, the Creativity
Demo Net and much more. All in all this is an excellent publication
and I highly recommend it. It provides a great deal of information
in a format that is easy to use and a pleasure to read. I am much
looking forward to their next issue due out shortly after Assembly 93.

** DMPC: A Front End for DMP **
**************************************************
Contact: g92m3062@alpha.ru.ac.za

DMPC is a front-end for DMP ((C) 1992, 1993 Otto Chrons), it was written
because a) I like using DMP and b) I hate having to type out everything
every time I want to use DMP!

DMPC (v1.3) has the following features: It's small (currently about 39k
resident) and pretty fast. It has a scrolling menu to choose your files
from. It supports AMF, S3M, 669 and MOD formats. It has sequential tagging
for ordered or random selection playback. It has a config file which allows
you to use your personal setup for DMPC.

DMPC does limit the number of files you can use at any one time, there is
currently a limit of 200 files (for space and speeds sake, this is not a
form of crippleware).
