Welcome to the 17th edition of the Sound Newsletter. I hope you
enjoy this issue. As an extra added bonus beginning with this issue
I have decided to add at least one Frequently Asked Question List
from Internet. These lists will focus on one product or aspect.
I hope you find this feature useful. Also Island CD Creations has
told me that the Sound-Site CD-ROM is doing well. Hurry and get your
disc with near 1400 MOD files and 500 MIDI files while supplies last.

Anybody going to Comdex and want to meet. Let me know. Also since
I will be at Comdex followed by a vacation in California please note
that the Sound Newsletter will end the year with a November/December

Everything seems to be running pretty smoothly on the sound.usach.cl
site. We are happy to say that all programs reviewed in the Sound
Newsletter can be found on this site and the site is growing everyday.
I am looking for a few people to help with the backlog of new programs.
What this would require is checking the incoming directory and downloading
new programs and verifying that they work (and of course possibly writing
a review of it for the Sound Newsletter if you have time). I can't
promise much but you will be able to see a lot of new programs before
most people and of course get your name in "lights" on the Sound Newsletter.
If you are interested let me know.
Our second site is going through final stages of preparation and we
should be able to announce it in the next issue. This site will be
different from our sound.usach.cl site and we hope you will find it
equally valuable.
Sound.usach.cl users please use the 'ls' command to view the files
on the system. The 'dir' command is still being perfected and sometimes
may not list all the files present. I have updated the MOD directory
to reflect many of the recent MOD files and have provided a listing
below of the new MOD files on the ftp site. Be looking for a list of
Sound file players in the next newsletter. In the meanwhile check out
the players directory as we have one of the most extensive collections
of sound players available.

There are now three different mail digests for Gravis
Ultrasound ("GUS") on the Internet. (If you aren't on the Internet,
you can get these off of Compu$erve, AOL, and hundreds of BBSs around
the world. Look around.) Generally speaking, each of them are mailed
out daily. You can subscribe to any combination of the lists. Here

This is the First (I believe) demo by the Nitrophites. After down-
loading, and unarchiving the files, you are left with approximately
4.5 meg of 30-40k data files of the form DATA##.DAT.. The demo
appears to run only with the soundblaster pro, so if you don't have
it, you're probably out of luck. I was only able to get two parts of
the megademo to run on my machine. One was a jukebox-style modplayer.
(At least I think that they were mods, cuz that what the screen said.)
where the user selects which mod to play via keyboard number and
presses escape to exit. In another jukebox-section the user is allowed
to select one of ten songs to play. These appear to use the Sb-pro
voice driver. I'm reasonably sure that the songs in the demo, were
also distributed with the SBPRO, but I'm not sure. The other parts
of the demo were not seen. At various parts the demos would say
part #, then flash a number (always the same one) 5283: or
something like that and then say Part #+1 . I tried the demo with
three different configs, XMS, EMS, BareBoot. (no himem or anything.)
and always got the same thing.
Overall this one is NOT worth the download.
RAGNAROK.zip
This is phoenix's first demo. The demo seems to autodetect which
card and processor you are using for sound, so there doesn't
appear to be much compatibility problem. ( I'm not sure if it uses
the GUS, though.) The demo has the familiar parts, PLASMA, LANDSCAPE,
and FILLED VECTORS. The presentation is pretty good, but there is
nothing really new here. The plasma looks like a FRACTINT created
plasma, using color cycling. The landscape looks almost identical
to the one found in UNREAL. The filled vectors are very fast.
Pretty decent demo, probably worth a look.
ALPHAPCI.ZIP
This is the intro demo from a demos group called PCI.
The demo has three parts. The first part has several vector objects,
which transform to other shapes. These aren't filled vectors, just
outline vectors. Nothing too fancy here, but it is very fast, and
goes through 5 to 6 objects very quickly. The next part is an effect
that they call the curtain. It is basically a sinus distortion of the
screen, which uses color cycling to give the appearance of animation.
Very similar to the wormhole effect in unreal. The sinus patterns then
fades to a block that says PCI ( just like the FC block in the worm-
hole.) This part is pretty neat, but nothing is very new here as it
only uses color-cycling. The last part is a shadebobs part. Once
again nothing very new here. The music is pretty good, and the mod
file is already extracted so that it can be saved. This demo runs
very fast, all-together it probably took only 1-2 minutes from start
to finish. It is small and even includes some source code for
shadebobs, so this is probably worth a D/L and look.
ADVERTISEMENT
I am looking for a good musician and/or graphic artist. I have a fair
amount of demo-code that is done, but I lack the talent to do music and
graphics. I'd love to release another AMERICAN demo, because I really
find it hard to believe that the US has so few good demo-groups.

What's new in version 1.80:
Fixed a balancing routine in the selection menu (gave one out in a
special case). DMPC will read only the formats in the inclusion mask
if you (re-)read a directory. Swapper will swap to either the temp
directory defined in the environment variable TMP or TEMP, or to the
temp directory defined in the DMPC config (in that order). Support
for Squeeze It (SQZ) archives. Reading uncompressed files should be
faster now. Fixed a bug in the play tagged routine. Changed config
into a more flexible INI-type format. Use CTRL-C for a fast change of
directory on the current drive. Use CTRL-D to delete all tagged files.
You can specify the directory DMPC will start up in on the
command-line, eg. DMPC \MYDIR\MODDIR.
DMPC is THE front-end for DMP/PMP (and almost any command-line driven
player). DMPC v1.80 can be found at:

** Muzika2 ** Notation software - lots of tools and MIDI file output

we are pleased to announce that the second version of MUZIKA
notation software is now available by anonymous ftp. it is written in
borland c++ 3.1, running under windows 3.1. it is available in
a file called muzika2.zip, by anonymous ftp.
MUZIKA2 is written using object oriented code extensively,
with much thought given to easily expandable code. currently
its capabilities are:
multiple staves, multiple part scores, most music notation,
extensive editing and block editing, automatic formatting,
and output of midi file. the last means that after creating
a musical score it can be translated to a midi file and played.
unfortunately the opposite is not possible, and input is
from a mouse only, not from a midi keyboard.
we will be happy to receive feedback, which we will take into
account when preparing following versions. our email address
appears in the "about" option once the program is running.

there are many improvements over the first version: the MIDI output
facility really works this time, and so does printing. support of many
basic music notation elements missing from the first version is now
implemented.
there is also an .arj file containing the manual in rtf format,

we are pleased to announce the beginning of an ongoing
project in sequencing software for the pc, running under
windows. version 1.1 is now available by anonymous ftp.
The package is called BEATMASTER 1.1 . it is written in borland c++ 3.1,
running under windows 3.1. it is available in a zipped file,
called btmstr1.zip.
BEATMASTER contains many features found in expensive commercial
sequencers: a bar window, piano roll window with a cursor that
moves along as the composition is played. there is a mixer with
a slider for each track, midi input from keyboard, and extensive
editing possibilities. play around with it.

CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA -- Aleph Omega Software has announced the
release of Windows Music Sculptor, an introductory level music program
that allows recording, editing, and playback of standard midi files.
It can be used with an external MIDI keyboard and also includes an
on-screen music keyboard which sports 128 piano-style keys that can
be played with the mouse. The measures of the song are displayed in
a Track Window that holds 99 tracks and scrolls to display the current
position as the music plays. Each track has a name, instrument, and
channel and can be enabled for recording or playback. An instrument
can be selected from a full menu of General MIDI instrument names or
by patch number. Edit operations include cut, copy, paste, and
velocity and pitch adjustment. Other features include full on-line
help, metronome, time signature, and tempo adjustment.
Windows Music Sculptor is fully functional, uncrippled shareware that
comes bundled with 6 standard midi files. A collection of 75 public
domain midi files are provided upon registration.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
Windows 3.1 or later in 386 Enhanced Mode and a Windows-compatible
sound card or MIDI interface.
