None of my thoughts on the world this issue. I'm just gonna use this space to
introduce the zine. Welcome to issue #1 of infosurge. This zine is the latest
in the sea of au zines and like the rest of the will probably die quickly. In
fact, I know it will die if ppl don't start submitting articles. Send ANYTHING.
Our standards are low. We don't have a permanent writing staff. That's not the
way I want it but I have found out that the majority of people are lazy fucks.
Therefore we are living on submissions. You don't send anything in, and we
don't put out an issue. If you don't like this zine then change it. Send in
stuff you think should be printed. Put something back into the au scene instead

In this text I will give several techniques on defeating ANI (Automatic Number
Identification). First of all, I will give a quick overview of ANI for those
new to phreaking. ANI is similiar in function to Caller ID (CLI/CND). They are
NOT however the same thing. They are completely different implementations.

Caller ID is a service, which you pay our greedy friends at Telstra money for.
They enable it on your line. When somebody calls a phone line with this
service the caller's information is passed down the line. I won't bother going
into detail about how the information is sent, etc. Caller ID can be blocked
easily. You can request to have your information permanently blocked or you
can dial 1831 on a per call basis.

ANI is completely different. The only similarity is that both function as
CLI's (Calling Line Identification). Ie they both identify the number of the
calling party. Anyway, none of these things will stop ANI. This is bad. What
this means is when you call an operator or a 18oo service they have your
number. That means you're fucked. Don't think when your hacking a 18oo or some
shit that they won't bother spending alot of time and money tracing you cos
you were leet and used 1831. They had your number before you had time to blink.

Well, that's enough background. Onto defeating it. I will outline several
procedures here.


[PayPhone Tekniq]
1. Get up from the computer. This may be hard for some of you. Now either
walk/cycle/drive/swim to your nearest payphone. Make the call from there.

[PBX Tekniq]
2. Use a PBX, divertor, etc. This can be difficult if u can't find any or
have no skillz and can't hack them once you find them.

[Call Foward Tekniq]
3. You will need a friend for this one. Once again this may be hard for some
of you. Get your friend to foward his phone to the number u wish to call
that has ANI. To enable call foward it's: *21 Ph. Number # Now call your
friend. ANI is dropped in transit and you are clear. For those out there
with a conscience don't worry. It won't transmit your friends number
either. You could also go and enable this on the line of an unsuspecting
victim. This can be done locally or remotely. It's usually a bit of a
hassle tho if u need this done on short notice and you have no unsuspecting
victims prepared.

[Call Foward Tekniq - Part 2]
4. Exactly like the last one. Except this time, call foward your own phone
number to the number to be dialed. Then just call yourself. This is
obviously the easiest and best techniq.
There are downsides to this technique tho. Whenever someone calls you
they will also get the fowarded number. This can be avoided by setting
Call Foward only on no answer and whenever someone calls u pick it up with
call waiting.


Well that about wraps it up. Everything presented in this text was pretty
basic. The methods used here weren't complex so if you were expecting Mission
Impossible techniques then bad luck. Practically all of this stuff is really
obvious but since I haven't seen any other writeups I thought I might as well

Preface:
Have you ever asked yourself this question?..

"Gee I wonder what people talk about when they are on the phone,
wouldnt it be so cool if I could listen in."

Well, good news for those aspiring secret agent type people who have asked
themselves that exact question as it is very possible, true a little
inconvenient and also rather a bit illegal (which brings me to another point,
there will be a disclaimer coming up. read it.)

In this file I will outline a few basic methods. You should be able to adapt
these methods to suit your particular need.

Here it goes ladies and gentlemen..

Yes, this stuff is probably illegal. Listening in on peoples private
conversations is not only very rude but also rather not nice. I write for
learning purposes. I hope you read for the same reason. I can not be held
accountable if you get some silly dreams about bugging your local feds and they
come in and haul your sorry ass away. Other than that i have nothing to say.

The setup:

So you have picked out your prospective target. Lets just for arguments sakes
say that you suspect your girlfriend is off on the side with some other guy
(this is probably valid, as i seriously doubt these ideas would be used for
anything that could not be solved by simply ASKING).
Being the youth you are, and being completely confused about the matters of
the heart you cannot ask her straight out so you decide to be covert about
things and try to find out yourself....

Now onto the techniques.

Number 1 - The old "Sitting on the roof when the call comes through" technique:

For this technique you will need a few things as follow:
- A beige box (linkage at the end of this text for beige box resources
- Either a *LOT* of time, or an uncanny sense of timing.

For those of you who are unaware, a beige box is like a linesmans handset
with aligator clips, which can be attached to the points on the service box
of any home phone, essentially making an unauthorised extension line. Now, the
usual use for a beige box is to rip off the poor sod who's roof you happen to
be sitting on at the time, but making calls on your extension.

For this you will attach your beige box and then you will sit and wait. You
are waiting for the phone to ring. When it does listen in on your phone (dont
make noise tho, they can hear you too you know).

Although effective, this technique is NOT effecient, and its not a good idea
to crawl around on peoples roofs when they are inside. Chances are they are
NOT deaf and they might get the urge to introduce you to Mr Shotgun. Oh, and
if your girlfriend wasnt looking for someone new, she will be after she finds
out that your a FUCKING PSYCHOPATH.

Number 2 - I can here you while not being there! sp00kay!

For this you will need:
- Beige box (tool of choice)
- Voice activated dictaphone
- Krad wiring techniques

Now then, this technque is much sneakier and probably quite efficient. The
basic idea is that you wire this dictaphone up to your beige box somehow. This
will differ for each model of dictaphone, but with the one I tested this on it
was a relatively simple chore to attach it through the external mic socket.
Once you have made your bug you will need to climb onto the roof of your
target to attach it to the telstra box. One of the upsides of this technique
is that you can install the device while the occupants are out, greatly
reducing your chances of getting introduced to the shotgun mentioned earlier.

The basic idea is that when the phone starts to ring, the auto start on the
dictaphone should kick in recording the conversation that takes place for you.
Of course, there are times when this may not work or at times there may be
excessive line noise (or external noise, depending on how you wired it)
causing the tape to run out. That brings me to another point, there are
several issues with this.

You WILL run out of tape if you dont return to the scene of the crime
regularly to exchange the tapes.

If the dictaphone is noisy, it WILL be heard on the line. Dependant on the
people who you are bugging, they may or may not twig as to what is happening.
Also if the tape runs out midcall, there will be what turns out the be rather
a loud click.

It is conceivable that the phone could be answered before the tape has started,
meaning it would be possible for the person answering the phone to hear the
tape clicking on.

General Issues:

It is entirely conceivable that you could find out information you probably
didnt want to know using these techniques. A word of advice, dont confront the
people when you found out on the bug because when they realise how you found
out you WILL be in shit.

Yes this article was written tongue in cheek, but thats just me. The techniques,
how ever dodgy in practice they are, DO work use them wisely or not at all.

Ok, so you want to go around pranking people and doing stupid tricks on
payphones. Well first thing you're gonna need is the number. Unfortunately
this aint the US and Telstra don't go around handing their numbers out. That
doesn't mean they are unobtainable. There are several methods of obtaining
numbers.

[FAST Tekniq]
1. For this one you need a Telstra Employee Number and PIN. Employee Numbers
are 8 digits and PIN's are 4 digits. Call up FAST and select a Ringback
test. FAST is 18OO O5O O51 btw. The payphone number will be read out to
you. Hang up the phone and wait about 5-10 seconds and pick up the phone.
The number should be read out too you again. However, FAST has been disabled
on virtually all X2 (smartphone) payphones.

[oo16 Tekniq]
2. This was my main method before and after FAST. Dial OO16 OOO OOO. You will
receive an error message in a male voice. At the the end of the message
a women will come on and you will be given a 3 digit code in the format
1XX. Add 1 to each X digit and you have the last two numbers of the
payphone. Combine this with the Cabinet number and you are left with 100
numbers to scan. Alot of ppl i have told this to said that this was
confusing so here is an example.

Cabinet Number: 97O7 34P2.
Dial OO16 OOO OOO. Get code of 137
3 + 1 = 4 : 7 + 1 = 8
Phone Number of Payphone: 97O7 XX48

Now scan 00 - 99 for XX and you will have the number. Scan from the
payphone and the number that is engaged is the payphone number. With this
technique you can get a payphone number within 5 to 10 minutes. Also you
may need to put in money for the phone call but when you hang up you will
get it back. On X2 phones you do not need to put in money. Also just press
follow on for a quick hangup. On X2's you can usually find the numbers in
about 3-5 minutes. You will most likely find that phones in the same area
have the same two middle digits. Therefore scanning one phone could give
you surrounding phones as well.

[Calling Card Tekniq]
3. Purchase a Telstra Telecard or Optus Calling card. Place some calls from
the payphone. Call up a day or two later and say you made a call yesterday
or wheneva at whateva time. Ask for the record of that call including
number of calling party and number of called party. There you go.

[Beige Box Tekniq]
4. For this one you just need a beige box. I won't go into beige box construc
tion here, it's fairly simple. Go out to ye olde payphone and find the slab
the payphones lines runneth thru. Open this up and hook up the beige box.
Dial a CLI number from here to get the number.

Ok, to finish up. Here are some things that DON'T work.
:: Calling 19123 - Disabled on ALL payphones to my knowledge but you might
:: want to give green and red phones a go
:: Calling any CLI - Same as above
:: Calling someone with Caller ID - Just doesn't show up. Accept it
:: Asking an Operator - Very unlikely. I have done it before once but generally
:: not worth the hassle. Using the other techniques are
:: faster and 100% reliable.

Before you start doing mad pranks remember that most common phones (X2,P2,P1)
do not have ringers. The Green,Red,Blue and Gold phones do have ringers tho.
And if this is too hard for you just go out and dial 1234. This is the
payphone operator. Just give her the Cabinet number and your set. This will
cost you $3.20 tho. Also they will ask for your number. They have ANI so
don't bullshit them just tell them your number. (Unless you have read my ANI
defeating text :P)

SOCIAL ENGINEERING - THE ART AND IT'S REWARDS


Do you need that password ??? You really want that dudes phone number ???
Are you desperate for that companys modem number ???

Social engineering is the answer!

The fact that you can persuade someone to reveal to you what would
normally be confidential information can be of great use to the hacker/phreaker.
Think about all the uses of such a skill, whether it be directly related to a
hack or simply gaining information on a target - there is no doubt that social
engineering is a very useful skill.

This article will explain the different methods which can be used, as
well as taking you through the steps of preparing for and executing a
successful social engineer.


THE TELEPHONE METHOD


Yep. You got it.

The most popular method of social engineering is making use of the
humble telephone, as this method has quite a few advantages over others.

On the telephone, you can make yourself appear to be someone that in
real life, you obviously are not. A persons voice can sound quite different
whilst on the phone - this can be used to your advantage when impersonating
an employee or member of your target organisation.

It is quite an easy method because it does not require a large amount
of effort on the part of the engineer - all that is needed is a telephone and
some degree of intelligence.

You are also fairly protected from your target, so if anything were to
go wrong you have little risk of being physically assailed.

If this is the method to be used then the follow points should be
remembered.

(a) Gather as much information about your target as possible. Use the
companies web page to gather as many facts, names and telephone
numbers as you can. If possible use the finger service to get
names and numbers.

(b) Once you have made contact with your target, use the information
you have to influence the person you are speaking to into trusting
you. Once you have gained this trust, attempt to aquire the
information or persuade the person into performing the desired task.

People will be much more cooperative with you if they think that
they are going to benefit from the situation. Ask them nicely and
make yourself sound like they would be doing you a HUGE favour by
performing the required task. Getting in the good books with
someone of importance can be reason enough to comply.

If at all possible try to make the person feel like they are not
entirely responsible for what they are doing. Diffusion of
responsibility will lessen the chance that they will refuse you.

Do not try to order the person into doing something. Using power
(or perceived power) is unlikely to work.

Another thing which may influence if a person cooperates with you
or not, is their level of involvement. If you are trying to
engineer someone with direct involvement then you must be sure to
use a simple reason why the person should fulfil your request. If
you are dealing with someone who has had fairly little experience
with what is required then you may be able pressure them to some
degree by using a lot of reasons why they should do the task
(your in a hurry, etc). Using a little bit of jargon may be
effective here - but DO NOT completely confuse the person.

(c) This method can also work much better if you are female. Male
employees will do anything to score points with the opposite sex,
so they are easily coerced into performing the desired function.
The female species will also be more readily trusted than a male
will.

If you are male and cannot get your voice to sound like a reasonably
convincing female or do not have access to voice-changer then you
could possibly get a trusted female friend to do the engineer for
you - but this can cause problems as bringing another person into
it means you have to explain to them what information is required
and how to go about getting it.


THE REAL LIFE IMPERSONATION


This method is somewhat more risky, but more likely to yield results
as it is more convincing to your target. This is the method of actually posing
in real life as a member of an organisation who would legitimately have access
to your target (Telstra, electricity company etc (be creative!)).

This may require you to physically enter the property of your target
and effectively engineer your way into their office to gain access to the
information or equipment you are after. Another use for this method is to
simply present yourself at the front desk or admin of your target and request
the information in person, as people will find it much harder to refuse your
request in person than they would over other lines of communication.

You must remember the following things if you are going to use this
method.

(a) Presentation is everything. You must be dressed and groomed to
play the part
- that means wearing a suit and tie. Shorts, thongs and a tank top
just wont cut it for this exercise.

(b) If you are holding an implement such as a clipboard, briefcase or
even a piece of testing equipment, you will come across as being
much more genuine and have a lower chance of being questioned
about your permission to be there.

(c) Act like you belong there, and as much as I hate to say it - you
must CONFORM. Become one of them, talk like they do and be polite.

(d) Much of what is said in point (b) of the telephone section also
applies here. Things should not be as hard though, as you are
actually present so in their eyes you HAVE to be the real thing.

(e) If possible do not hack/phreak from the location you are accessing.
Get your information and leave the premises. The less time spent
getting info the better.


THE EMAIL METHOD


This is the method of forging/impersonating someone via email and
requesting the information. From personal experience this does not work very
well with people who are highly involved with the Internet and computers, as
they are fairly likely to spot a forgery or details that seem suspicious. But
if you think your target has little intelligence or experience in the field
then by all means use this method as it can be quite effective. Once I was
able to convince two people that the other person was deeply in love with them.
Every time one of them walked into the room, the other person always went
quiet. This particular illusion was kept up for months before they realised
that the email was fake and I got into trouble over it. Luckily I was friends
with both of them :).

When using this method remember the following.

(a) Spelling, grammar and punctuation must be immaculate. You have
to come across to them as a professional, so use the correct
jargon etc.

(b) If you are going to impersonate someone they know, gather as much
info about the person you are impersonating as possible. Try as
hard as you can to get a sample of their writing style, the way
they end their email and any signature files they may use etc.
You must not arouse the targets suspicion as to the origin of
the email.

(c) Once again many of the rules mentioned in point (b) of the
telephone method apply.



These are just the three main methods that are used in social
engineering. There are others but I'm not going to go into detail about them
here. Be creative when performing scams such as these. If you use your
imagination you can come up with plenty of different methods and/or variations
on these.

Whether it be passwords, modem numbers or any kind of information,
social engineering really can be a very useful skill. If you use your wits,
intelligence and quick thinking you can talk your way into or out of just
about any situation.

Use this information how you will - and most importantly - have phun.
