Note from the Editor
--------------------
Issue #13 is upon us and whether or not 13 is unlucky, it begins with
some unfortunate news. Saffron.inset.com which has for some time
been a home to the sound newsletter and sound archives, has closed
it's doors. Unfortunately the machine that housed it was needed
for other tasks. Special thanks to Jim Oldroyd for the time and effort
he put into Saffron. Jim will remain with the sound site as a consultant.
And the bad news keeps coming... ccb.ucsf.edu the official home of the
sound newsletter has been retired. We are currently in the process of
setting up at a new machine on that site but it could be awhile before
we get something running. Sometime in June the Sound Site will be back
in business with an archive similiar to Saffron but larger. Please be
watching for an announcement in the near future.
It is with pleasure that I can announce that ISLAND CD CREATIONS has
released a CD-ROM with the complete Saffron archives including many music
files from our personal collection. See "NEWS" section below for details.
With all the shuffling on the ftp sites I have decided to hold part #2
of the Multimedia demos until after Assembly 93 which should bring
some of the greatest demos ever to be seen in head to head competition
for the grand prize. I am currently looking for writers that want to
cover Assembly 93 so if you are interested please let me know.
Also as always I am looking for column authors, program experts, or
people with Gravis, Pro Audio Spectrum, Soundblaster, Adlib cards to help
write feature articles and columns. Please let me know if you are
interested. I am looking to move the Sound Newsletter into a monthly
format allowing column authors a monthly column in which they can write.
Finally as you may have noticed starting with Issue #13 several changes
to the sound newsletter. Foremost it is now archived in the ZIP format
and several files have been added as listed below:
AUTHOR.TXT : List and author address of programs features in the Sound
Newsletter
INDEX.TXT : An index of the Sound Newsletter back issues
MIDI.BBS : List of MIDI Bulletin Boards
Please use the address below to send comments and/or submission to the
Sound Newsletter (also note sound@ccb.ucsf.edu is no longer a valid address)
davek@uhunix.uhcc.hawaii.edu
The Sound Newsletter is also posted to comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcardsc as well
as rec.games.misc and comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc on USENET. We are also a part of
SB-Net. See bottom for list of BBS and FTP sites that carry the Sound
Newsletter.

** IBM MOD Players Compared **
*********************************
** by Randall Abel **
*********************************
The Sound Newsletter gets various letters from people asking questions
about the different MOD players available for the IBM PC. I have found
an excellent publication which is reprinted below. Randall Abel has
compiled a rather thorough list of IBM MOD players. If you see any player
missing from this list please feel free to contact him at the address
listed below. The list is posted to comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard every
Friday.
Editors note: CD-Box has been upgraded to Version 3.00 see SOUND BITS
for further info.
** Reprinted with Permission **
This is a comparison of all of the IBM MOD music file players that I
have come across. Friday - (05/28/93)

New Stuff: Week of May 22, 1993 to May 28, 1993
* New Player called GUS Play for the Gravis UltraSound card (version 1.5)
Graphical player can play 4, 6, or 8 channel music files including
mod and octa songs.
* New version of Dual Mod Player (version 2.46 to version 2.51)
+ Quality mode is now better than ever! Music plays
a lot louder and is clearer too.
- Utilities are gone
- some bugs in S3M loader fixed, and no more note shifts!
- Aria support works now better.
+ DMP can now utilize EMS memory for samples. So you can
play really large MODs with DMP and still have lots of
DOS memory! Option -b disables EMS usage.
* GRAB.EXE, VIDEOMEM.COM and batch files for ripping S3Ms
are now history. If you want them, fetch an older version
(available on wuarchive.wustl.edu in /pub/msdos_uploads/sounds dir)
=========================================================================
CD-Box, ModEdit, ModPlayer, JMPlayer, Power Player & Scream Tracker
are available on SIMTEL (in sound or music directories).
Try oak.oakland.edu or other SIMTEL mirror site.
Other players can be found on:
wuarchive.wustl.edu (pub/MSDOS_UPLOADS/sounds directory)
picasso.ocis.temple.edu
ftp.uwp.edu (pub/msdos/modplayers or pub/incoming/modplayers areas)
archive.epas.utoronto.ca
=====================================================================
Notes: The EMS OK column is used to let you know if the MOD player
sounds Correct with an EMS memory manager loaded. In most
cases these Players will still work but they will sound
distorted.

Notes: Only a few Mod players specifically mention PAS support but
from what I've heard the PAS is 100% SB compatible so it should
work with any player that supports Sound Blaster.
PS: There is a cool utility called MOD2MIDI.ZIP which converts MOD
files to MIDI files for those with MIDI devices. This program is
available on wuarchive.wustl.edu in /pub/msdos_uploads/sounds dir.
======================================================================
If you find any errors, omissions or new versions of the above
players please send me a note.
Thanks to all who sent me suggestions & additional information!

What do the Wave Utilities consist of?
--------------------------------------
The Wave Utilities 2.1 consist of Looper and Player, two Windows sound
applications.
Looper is a Windows application that plays digitized audio files in
wave format (files with the .wav extension) continuously in the back-
ground. It can handle all the types and formats of Wave files that
your sound card is capable playing of. The size of the Wave file to be
looped must not be larger than half of your installed physical memory
(not the virtual memory Windows provides). You can stop and restart the
looping process. With Looper, you can have a lot of fun. It can almost
turn your computer into a Sampler, a Beat Box or a drum machine.
Player is a sound player for Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher, which can
handle all the types and formats of Wave files that your sound card is
capable playing of. There are no limitations to the length of the Wave
file to be played. You are now able to play Wave files by simply
doubleclicking them in the File Manager. Normally, this isn't the case
- launching a Wave file calls up the Sound Recorder with the Wave file
loaded in memory. If you have a Pro AudioSpectrum 16 sound card, you
can use it's feature to play back two Wave files simultaneously together
with Looper and Player. Player can also play Wave files while you're
playing .mod files and much more. Once you installed Player, launching
a .WAV document from the File Manager will play the sound. This allows
greater flexibility for organizing and playing sounds. For example, you
can now install all of your sounds in a Program Manager group.
Doubleclicking their icons will then play them. By installing a Wave file
in your Autostart Group you are now able to play a sound of unlimited
length when Windows starts up.
When you use Norton Desktop For Windows 2.0 or later as your Windows
Shell, you can make easy use of Player's feature to play back several
Wave files after another.
What software and hardware requirements do they have ?
------------------------------------------------------
You must have either Windows with Multimedia Extensions or Windows 3.1
or above installed on your system. You will also need at least 1 Mega-
byte of RAM and a sound card that is capable of playing back digitized
sounds (such as a Sound Blaster card).
It is also required that you put the file BWCC.DLL which comes with
The Wave Utilities 2.1 in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If you should
already have a copy of it you should keep the one with the latest date.
Are The Wave Utilities Freeware or Shareware or what?
-----------------------------------------------------
The Wave Utilities are released as Shareware. This means that you can
use them for 2 weeks without any restrictions, but after that period
you must either register or delete them. When you register, you will
receive the latest versions of the software that do not contain the
registration reminders plus you will get a lot of Waveformat audio
files to use with Looper and Player for free.
The registration fee is $10 (U.S funds). To register, print out the
file REGISTER.FRM, fill it out, put it together with the $10 into an
envelope and send it back to us. You can send it to one of these
addresses:

diskette type on which you want to receive the files and the specifi-
cations the Wave files shall have. If you have an E-Mail address, we
can also send you your registered version to that address via uuen-
coded E-Mail.
If you're already a registered user of The Wave Utilities, you can get
Version 2.1 for only $5 (U.S. funds). If we can send you the files via
uuencoded E-Mail the update fee is only $3 (U.S. funds).
To update, print out the file REGISTER.FRM, fill it out, put it together
with the money into an envelope and send it back to us.

* CD-Box v3.00 - Update information *
*************************************
CD-Box is a VGA & mouse player & playback shell to play music on an AdLib or
SoundBlaster card (or better). It provides a common high-level interface to
seven different sound file formats with extras: Pause & Repeat & Volume
control, multiple and random song selection, automatic handling of bank
files, song titles and lengths, playback from archives, and nice graphics
and animation!
CD-Box v3.00 is a major update to CD-Box. The most important improvements are
the superb graphic enhancements (using ray-tracing software) and full
internal support (no need for an external player) for .ROL (good news for
AdLib users) and .WAV, in addition to .CMF, .MOD and .VOC. Other changes
include the capability to scan multiple drive/directories, repeat & echo
buttons, support for any player (even if it changes the video mode) and for
.PAK archives, much faster and efficient code, and classier "look and feel".
This version is so hot it's melting my computer :-)
I still have no e-mail address (thanks again to the Editor of this excellent
publication for uploading)... so keep up the snail mail!
