Lucy Gillis offers a selection from the Lucid Dream Exchange this month on lucid dreams and the grassroots lucid dreamwork movement through the eyes of The Lucid Dream Exchange founder Ruth Sacksteder. [via a Robert Waggoner interview] Be sure to read DreamSpeak.
Sometimes the notion of "dreams" takes on highly metaphorical tones, and becomes more like the word "wish" or "imagination." Linda Lane Magallón brings the notion of dreaming back to sleep and explores the REM theory and differentiates the variety of experiences that are more appropriately assigned to dreaming and those better assigned to waking states. Be sure to read "Dreams Are SLEEPING Experiences."
Jean Campbell has been a key player in 21st Century dream activism and this month has an update from the most active project, the World Dreams Peace Bridge. In "A View from the Bridge" Jean describes one of the current projects, the Peace Train, and how it has been dream-steaming its way around the world.
If you have been looking for an online community with which to share dreams, there are now hundreds. Electric Dreams has always offered the DreamWheel, Yahoogroups and other organizations offer dozens of groups. But which one is right for you? In her article "DreamShare : An Online Dream Community" Judith Gips discusses the DreamShare community, based on techniques learned from Jeremy Taylor and backed by a responsive host and community. The community was on vacation for awhile, but now plan to start up again and they are looking for new members. Be sure to read Judith's article on the community and if it appeals to you, give it a try!
The Dream Section, beautifully edited by Elizabeth Westlake [with the help of Harry Bosma's editor program], is full of dreams sent in to us over the last month. Mad women, birthday dreams, strange letters and more await you in the Dream Section!
If you have dreams you want published, don't send them to Elizabeth directly, but rather enter them in the form at

>>>> Dec 1 Deadline for ASD Conference Presentations
http://www.asdreams.org/2003/
Call for Presentations
Papers, Symposia, Panels, Focused Discussions, Poster Sessions, Workshops, Artwork and General Events
Twentieth Annual International Conference of the
Association for the Study of Dreams
June 27-July 1, 2003 in Berkeley, California
www.ASDreams.org/2003
1(866) DREAM12
The Association for the Study of Dreams (ASD) is a non-profit, international, multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the pure and applied investigation of dreams and dreaming. Its purposes are to promote an awareness and appreciation of dreams in both professional and public arenas; to encourage research into the nature, function, and significance of dreaming; to advance the application of the study of dreams; and to provide a forum for the eclectic and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and information.
ASD is open to anyone who studies, explores, or works with dreams. Its international membership has representatives from dozens of countries. Members of ASD come from a broad range of backgrounds, including clinical practice, academic research, laboratory experimentation, educators at every level from pre-school to graduate professional training, the expressive and performing arts, religious studies, and those involved in individual or group study and exploration of dreams or dreaming. A variety of academic disciplines and theoretical perspectives is represented among the membership, many of whom work professionally in fields like psychology, education, religious studies, anthropology, psychiatry, social work, medicine, literature, art, philosophy, humanities, and business administration.
>>>> Dream Work Classes in Berkeley
David Jenkins offers classes in Practical Dreamwork
COST: There is no charge for your first class. After that, it is $15 per class or $45 for the month.
http://www.practicaldreamwork.com/
LENGTH: Classes are 2 hours but can run over.
WHERE: Class meets in downtown Berkeley. Near BART (4 blocks), near the campus, close to buses along Shattuck Avenue or down Bancroft Way.
DAY: Thursdays
FROM: 7.30pm TO: 9.30pm
REGISTER: send an email to dj@practicaldreamwork.com to enroll and get exact location.
About the class:
The classes last about 2 hours. Sometimes there is some group work but the bulk of the class consists of someone telling a dream and then I, and the class, work on it. Sometimes the dream is very relevant to everyone in the room and the dream truly becomes a shared experience and sometimes it focuses entirely on the dreamer.
As needed, I use the "If it were my dream..." format so that the dreamer and the group keep clear boundaries rather than projecting their own stuff onto the dreamer. There's a big difference between someone saying to you "I think the dream means that you want to go back to college" and "If that were my dream, it would mean that I wanted to go back to college". The first case ("I think the dream means ...") is intrusive: it's really not their business and they have no good reason for saying this. In the second case ("If it were my dream ...") they are speaking for themselves and, if your dream really is telling you to go back to college, you can make your own mind up.
I rarely interpret -- i.e., I don't tell you what your dream means. I think of us as leading double lives, a dream life and a waking life. They interact and one can help the other but they are two separate dimensions. What I do do is tease out the important parts of the dream and help you focus on how you would like to change the dream (and thereby change your waking life).
>>>> July 2003 Dream Conference in Russia
Russian conference on dreams will take place on
July 5 - 9, 2003
in the beautiful ex-residence of Pushkin near
St-Petersburg. The conference on Pushkin takes place
every year there but next time a student of mine
persuaded the organizing committee to devote the
conference to dreams.
Here is the program in brief:

>>>> Dreams in Myths, Medicine, and Movies
Dr. Sharon Packer, MD, PhD, covers a wide range of dream sharing in _Dreams in Myths, Medicine, and Movies_ (Praeger, 235 pages, $64.95).
" Indeed, she notes, if Freudian dream theory has lost its hold on the American imagination, "It seems that there's the makings of a kind of dream cult in the underground. People have dream-sharing groups that sound very much like church meetings. There's a big online community. There are literally thousands of these groups. You know, if there can be prayer meetings everywhere, why shouldn't there be dream meetings?" From John Strausbaugh, NewYorkPress #15(47).

>>>> Collecting Animal Dreams
Pat Kampmeier is collecting dreams of fish, worms, wolves, cats and salamanders, and also numinous dreams of any kind.
Series of any of these would be especially interesting. Please tell your dream(s) and then a little about what that symbol means for you. If you wish to show the work you have done, including drawings, to arrive at that meaning(s),that would be great, too, though not necessary.
Several meanings for a particular symbol are OK, since dreams are many-layered. I would also like to know how old you were when you had each dream.

>>> Aggressive Womens'Dreams Needed
Erica Andermatt and I are currently working on the book "Woman with knife". We collect and analyze dreams and daydreams of women, in which they are aggressive, wild, violent and murderous... We try to answer questions like "What is aggression?", "How can a woman handle this power?", "How can we take the knife in our hands and be aware of not cutting our fingers?" and others. If you would like to contribute aggressive dreams or daydreams? The most nasty, wicked and cruel ones? Then please send your mail to johanna_vedral@hotmail.com If you would like so, send it anonymous. But please tell us your age, your marital status and your occupation. If you would like to go into a dialogue about your dreams/ daydreams, please tell us, too, and we will contact you!

>>> Dream Survey : Are you having dreams about Islam?
http://dreamgate.com/dreamsofislam/
We are two Western Muslims, a British educator and an American writer, who are interested both in how dreams relate to the spiritual life, and in how Islam is presently perceived by Muslims and non-Muslims both in the west and in traditionally Muslim lands. We hope to collaborate on a book with the provisional title of Dreams of Islam. We are looking for striking or significant dreams about Islam from both Muslims and non-Muslims, dreams which have had a strong impact on you the dreamer, whether or not you think the content would seem "interesting" to an outsider. The Islamic content could refer to people, events, places, beliefs, practices, symbols, memories or associations, architecture, works of art, written or spoken words - anything specifically Islamic, or with an Islamic flavor.
You can fill out the survey at the website, or download the questions: http://dreamgate.com/dreamsofislam/ . For more information, contact Charles Upton : E-mail uptonjenny@hotmail.com
>>>> Computer Dreams Needed!
Are you dreaming of problems with your hard disk, getting connected, the wrong programs coming up, not being able to find the file you want? Does your computer turn you on, and have you found yourself mating with a digital partner or cyborg sex? Has god spoken to you through your computer in a dream? Has the computer in a dream assisted you in becoming lucid?
Just as during the last turn of the century, we shifted from horse and carriage dreams to cars, trucks and jets, now we are entering a new cyber-symbolic era of networking and global interface. What dream content will remain, what will change?
Take the Computer-Dream survey and help us better understand the changing night-scape of the digital culture.

From Jean Campbell
"Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in the United States, a group of international dreamers gathered around the idea of dreaming the world toward peace.
Everyone dreams. In many cultures it is believed that the world is a creation of our dreams. These dreams are a bridge across which we can reach toward one another.
It is difficult to make war against someone with whom we have shared a dream. All dreamers are welcomed on The World Dreams Peace Bridge.
Many of the dreamers involved in the World Dreams Peace Bridge are members of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. A history of the first year of The World Dreams Peace Bridge was presented by Jean Campbell at the 2002 ASD Membership Conference in Boston.
Monthly reports on the activities of the World Dreams Peace Bridge can be found in the e-zine Electric Dreams edited by Peace Bridge member, Richard Wilkerson .
The World Dreams Peace Bridge web site, logo and graphics, though they involve many, are created and supervised by Elizabeth Diaz."

- Freedom Bird
This project developed from the song "High Flyin' Bird," sung by Richie Havens, a song which haunted me, and inspired a painting, 30 years ago.
I felt this was my song, the story of my lost youth. In the process of making the chickenwire BIRD-mobile and the accompanying collage, I regained my identity as a high flyin' bird, I regained my freedom. If you look carefully at the center of the collage, you will see, hidden by the shadow of the giant bird, the words, FREEDOM!

"The Great Bear Dream"
|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|
Electric Dreams Cover for November 2002:
Title: "The Great Bear Dream"
Dreams are the source of our past, present, and future. Art and writing are how I express my dreams, visions, and how the manifestations in everyday life relate to great myths and legends. With art, rebirth is always achievable. Each new phase in the development is exciting, even though the change is inevitably accompanied by difficulty- the same way that a butterfly is faced with the challenge of freeing itself from its chrysalis. Art is a continuing force that neither life nor death can touch, a visual impression of the progress of our existence.
I work with a variety of media. Those I prefer are pastel, pen and ink, gouache, oil sticks, acrylic, and watercolor. My images are typically composed of many layers, multidimensional, magnifying some of the smallest fragments of my surroundings. I focus on strong presence and intimacy, as well as unique perspectives.
It was art that saved me when I entered a "dark period" in my life. Marie-Louise Von Franz, a Jungian analyst, wrote that "Nothing in the human psyche is more destructive than unrealized, unconscious creative impulses...when it is a question of a mass psychosis, nothing but new, creative, 'redemptive' archetypal conceptions, brought up from the depths, can stop the development toward a catastrophe." There was no medication or therapy that could help me the way that art did, that could lead me to gain the insight I needed to change my entire life. The more I've expressed, the more I've been able to see my world with a clarity I never before possessed. Therefore, my initial experience with art has been one of purging.
What my work presently reflects is a renewal, and the influence of accumulated experiences: fear, inward journeys, finding my own sense of spirit, travel, love, lost time, the unification of opposites and acceptance. Creating art is a spiritual experience for me, meaning it comes from a place that I don't always understand in a way that can be explained. Sometimes, it can only be painted or drawn. And therein lies the reason I do what I do.
We are all artists, with our personal and collective experiences, our different media and methods of expression. My goal is to become an art therapist for adolescents and to show people how they can open up to their individual potential, and resolve their inner conflicts through artistic expression the same way that I have in my own life.
Since 1999, I have been involved with hippopotamus conservation and formed a small group called Friends of the Hippo. People from all locations across the globe came together on an e-mail mailing list and over the past few years we have raised money for the Turgwe Hippo Trust in Zimbabwe and a hippo head statue for display at Utah's Hogle Zoo (soon to be installed), and maintained the latest information about hippopotamuses at our group's website:
http://www.savethehippos.com/
Currently, I am in the process of developing my own tarot deck, called The North Star Tarot: The Ursa Deck. It is only partially based on the original tarot structure and centers around Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. Progress updates on the deck can be found at:
http://www.thedreamingeye.com/ursa/
In the future, this section of the website will also contain more in-depth information about the symbols used in the deck, and a place for people to send in their own visual or textual impressions of the cards or Ursa Major in general. My main website is called The Dreaming Eye and is located at:
http://www.thedreamingeye.com/
-------------------------------------
The Great Bear Dream
-------------------------------------
This artwork was inspired by one of my most intensely vivid dreams, and signaled the beginning of a very difficult but ultimately transformative period in my life. The dream took place in 1995, only about seven months before I was to travel overseas and live for a year as an exchange student in the UK.
In the dream, I stood in my backyard and then saw at the level of the neighboring rooftops a giant wave about to crash down over the houses. The sky turned a blood red color, and I ran as fast as I could There was a huge flood, but I managed to survive and found five others wandering the streets. We began to journey across the city, which was empty and dark. We walked until we came to the ocean. There, a raft appeared carrying about nine or ten men, all wearing long dark robes. The sky turned very dark blue. The men were chanting some words, which sounded like 'En ra ma', and they told me to look at the sky.
There I saw the shape of a bear which was made of stars and it spun around. As it spun around, more stars flew from the body, as though it was shaking off water. The bear held the moon in its arms. One of the men told me to always follow the Great Bear in the sky.
The few of us left boarded the raft and were carried across the ocean to another desolate land. On the shore, there was a giant white wall. We walked beyond it and collected what looked like bamboo and leaves to build ourselves houses.
This dream initiated my study of Ursa Major-the Great Bear constellation, Ursa Minor and the North Star, and inspired my current tarot deck in progress. The deck is centered around the bear as a symbol for the transformative power of solitude and reflection on the inner self. At the time of this dream, I knew nothing about the legend of the Great Bear, or the way in which the stories centered around the bear were so psychologically attuned to changes which I was undergoing at the time.
My entire childhood was filled with vivid dreaming experiences which I tried to suppress. It took the dream of the Great Bear to reawaken my connection to my dreams, and ever since this dream I have become a firm believer in exploring the subconscious world of dreams to further understand the active, waking world.

An Excerpt From the Lucid Dream Exchange
By Lucy Gillis
o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o
This month I am happy to submit Robert Waggoner's interview with LDE founder Ruth Sacksteder.
DreamSpeak An Interview with a Lucid Dreamer
By Robert Waggoner
Long-time lucid dreamer and founder of The Lucid Dream Exchange, Ruth Sacksteder, has kindly agreed to be interviewed for LDE #24. A resident of the Bay Area, Ruth has promoted lucid dreaming through the creation of the LDE, participation in lucid dream experiments, and her own lucid dream group in Berkeley.
Robert: So Ruth, could you tell us about how you became interested in lucid dreaming and what your first lucid experiences were like?
Ruth: I had my first lucid dream before I had heard of the term. That was probably in 1968 or 1969 when I was 24. Some months before, I had had occasional sleep paralysis/bedroom "visitor" type experiences. I can't recall the very first lucid dream, but in those early lucid dreams I was amazed I was doing what I was doing. I felt a sense of wonder that my mind had fashioned such gorgeous, intricate environments. I often just looked around. I also enjoyed flying but usually couldn't fly as high as I would have liked. There were less pleasant sides as well - intense vibrations and odd phenomena I couldn't comprehend.
I thought I was the only person who had dreams like this. I would ask peers but at that time never found confirmation from others. In 1974-75, I was in a class on dreams when I was introduced to the term "lucid dreaming." I realized that was what I had been doing off and on and that others had similar experiences.
Robert: Living in the Bay area, were you able to meet other lucid dreamers and share ideas?
Ruth: Well, I continued to have spontaneous lucid dreams and went through occasional periods of trying to induce more than I'd ordinarily have. I wrote down most of these dreams. The majority were close to what I would now call semi-lucid.
In the late '80's, through lucid dreamer Steve Gillenwater, I was introduced to Stephen LaBerge's book, *Lucid Dreaming*, and his work. This came at a time when I was working afternoons and had my mornings relatively free. The book was a great help and gave me some focus in learning lucidity. A few years later I became a member of LaBerge's Oneironautical Research Group at the Lucidity Institute and participated in some of the research projects. Other Bay area contacts were the experienced lucid dreamers, like Linda Magallon and Keelin. I participated in mutual dreaming experiments designed by Linda.
In the early '90's I was also in a correspondence group formed by Lucidity Institute members and thus got to know dreamers in other parts of the country. I enjoy trying experiments in my lucid dreams and did some of my own design as well as those designed by LaBerge, Linda Magallon, Janice Brooks, Jay Vogelsong, and others. Up until 1995 I was working part-time and was able to put a good amount of energy into lucid dreaming research.
Robert: I see that you have an ad for a lucid dream group in the *Dream Network Journal*. What has your lucid dream group been like? Is it hard having lucid dreamers at various levels of ability?
Ruth: Around that time, I had a lucid dream group meeting in my house. Unfortunately, that group no longer meets (so I'm not sure why the DNJ still runs the ad). The group had about 5 or 6 consistent members as well as others who were more occasional. The group met once a month. I enjoyed having people of all levels of ability and experience. The group was not a course in lucid dreaming but a place for people to share lucid dreams and thoughts about lucidity. We tried occasional experiments. I also liked having people with different approaches and outlooks since I didn't want the group to become a clique.
Robert: How was it that you began The Lucid Dream Exchange?
Ruth: In the early '90's there were several lucid dream publications. They presented excellent articles as well as interesting lucid dream research, but they included only a few lucid dreams. Several people told me that they wished there were a magazine comprised of people's actual lucid dreams. I thought that was a good idea and felt as a "group", we lucid dreamers could put out something like that. I intentionally kept it small and intimate. I want to thank all of those people who sent lucid dreams, art work, and poetry to the LDE, as well as those who attempted any of the suggested experiments and sent in their results. I want to add that I am pleased with the current continuation of the LDE and am glad it didn't stop when I could no longer produce it. The new look is great!
Robert: Often in your lucid dreams, you immediately head for "Apt. #8". How did you become interested in returning to the same dream locale, and what meaning does this have for you?
Ruth: One lucid dreamer created an analog of her town in her lucid dreams. She was an extremely accomplished lucid dreamer and had amazing consistency of character and locale. In comparison, I was very much a beginner. As an experiment, I decided to create a dream analog of my apartment building and people it with dream characters. I never developed much consistency and eventually used only Apt. 8, which was, in waking life, close to my own apartment and often at that time, vacant. With practice it became pretty easy to get to Apt. 8, if I became lucid in the image of my bedroom.
I used Apt. 8 (that is, dream apt. 8) in various ways at various times. I made it into what I called the "Dream Learning Center". For awhile it had an attractive library, though unfortunately I couldn't read the books. There was another period when a dream analog of my mother "decided" to live there and happy times when it was full of gorgeous cats and kittens. There have been odd characters, too, as well as mirrors for transport (to phase through) and briefly, a cool slide down into other territory. That was in its heyday, but it could be vacant as well, dark and empty.
Now lucid dreams are much rarer, and I use Apt. 8 largely as a means to an end - to switch from local lucid city terrain to something more countrified and "natural". I go out a door to the side and get to fields, forests, creeks, and even the sea or at least a more countrified version of a town. If I had more time and more lucid dreams, I'd love to experiment again with Apt. 8, but since 1995 I have been working full time, usually getting up very early. Lucid dreams are more sporadic.
Robert: Sometimes, I have wondered about your designation of a WILD or wake-initiated lucid dream. How do you distinguish a WILD from a non-WILD lucid dream?
Ruth: In a WILD you go directly into a dream from being awake and are 'immediately' aware that you are dreaming. In a DILD (dream-initiated), you become aware that you are dreaming some time during the dream.
In a WILD you can be lying in bed awake. You probably become drowsy and are aware you are becoming drowsy. Then suddenly you are in a dream and you know that you are dreaming. You may, for example, watch the dream imagery coming as hypnagogia at first and then find yourself entering one of the images or perhaps you "soar" above the scene a moment before entering. You are aware you are dreaming. At the very least, you suspect it and do an immediate reality test though generally you don't need to.
Local lucids also can be in this category, as well as OBE dreams, assuming you are aware you are dreaming. You may be in bed, awake but drowsy, then suddenly you find yourself standing in the middle of your room. You are immediately aware that you are dreaming or suspect you are and do a reality test to confirm it. You could even be in bed and feel the transition - your body image changing from literal body to dream body. You may experience vibrations, buzzes, or rushes of wind. You may hear disembodied voices or even see people in your bedroom. So you get up out of your (dream) bed and enjoy a local lucid. Other times, you may lie in bed and suddenly "shoot" out of your body and fly through the window or wall into a dreamscape.
In all of the examples, you are aware you are dreaming from the beginning. There are, of course, gray areas in WILDS as in many aspects of lucid dreaming. What if there are a few moments before you realize you are dreaming? What if the scene goes dark and you feel yourself on your bed but you realize you are not completely awake - then the scene returns or you get up and have a local lucid? Is that a WILD or a continuation of the earlier dream? If you slept 10 minutes and then entered a dream, I probably wouldn't call it a WILD - but if you immediately knew it was a dream and you were aware that you were sleeping during those 10 minutes of sleep, you might call it a WILD.
Some WILDs are very brief. Others are dark in the beginning and light only gradually kicks in. There can be stops and starts - many returns to the dream, but the level of awareness in comparison with waking awareness is often higher than in DILDs.
Robert: If you were talking to an intermediate lucid dreamer, what are some of the principles or guidelines that you would suggest to operate successfully in the lucid dream environment?
Ruth: One thing - it is important to understand that many waking life rules don't apply in dreams. Such realization can help the dreamer become more fully lucid (aware of his/her state). Amusing things occur when a person is only partially lucid. An example - after becoming lucid, a dreamer may worry about finding the key to lock the dream office door before leaving the building. That's a pretty crude example, but these kinds of confusions occur frequently in lucid dreams.
I would also advise studying the role suggestion and expectation play in the creation of dream imagery. Read the lucid dreams of as many people as possible, noting different styles from your own and different outlooks. Don't jump to conclusions from your own experience alone. Try new things in your lucid dreams, experiment, and of course, enjoy lucidity.
Robert: Tell us about a lucid dream that "surprised" you - what was that like?
Ruth: Some people imagine that there is total conscious control in lucid dreams, but that is rarely, if ever, so. As in non-lucid dreams, some images can be downright surprising - one has no idea what might have suggested them. I included a dream with an unexpected image in LDE 13:
August 1-2 1999
I re-enter a dream lucid and after talking to a woman, decide to "exercise" my bad leg by dream running and also practice better breathing. I run around a grassy field several times. As I run I discover tiny creeks with small bridges across parts of the field. Then, to my surprise, on the bridges or on the ground beside the bridges are very Catholic-looking images of the suffering Jesus (that is, Jesus dying or just having died on the cross -- I was raised religiously, but not as a Roman Catholic). I may have unintentionally stepped on one image. In the dream, I don't know how to respond to these unexpected images that seem somewhat alien to my own spirituality. I leave the field and interact with the woman I had spoken to earlier. I don't recall any of the dialogue.
Robert: What did you make of this lucid dream later?
Ruth: This dream puzzled me because I couldn't see what suggestion might have created such an image. It seemed unrelated to my efforts to "run" and practice better breathing. I thought perhaps this dream had some meaning and tried to tease it out. After three years, though, I am still not completely sure what to make of the dream. As dreamers, we can be glad our dreams offer surprises and frequently elude pat interpretations. Because of the unexpected image, this dream stays in my mind better than most of the lucid dreams I have had.
Robert: Is there any advice that you think would be helpful for readers of the LDE?
Ruth: In addition to all that I have said in this interview, I would remind dreamers that, in the West at least, the art and science of dreams and especially lucid dreaming is very young. We are in the early stages of learning. It is very easy to jump to all kinds of conclusions without sufficient evidence. It is best to keep exploring, comparing results with others, while withholding excessive judgments. Nonetheless, this is an exciting time for lucid dreamers. We are the pioneers!

Dreams Are SLEEPING Experiences
(c) 2002 Linda Lane Magallón
o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o
Several decades ago, dream researchers discovered that sleep runs in cycles with an average duration of ninety minutes. The stage of the cycle helps determine the content and form of our dreams. Certain stages support our emotional-feeling side; other phases of the cycle favor our logical-rational side. If we happen to be asleep during the emotional-feeling part of the cycle, we tend to experience the usual, visual dream. The logical-rational side is more likely to produce mental or "thinking" dreams.
During sleep, lab scientists can track automatic movements of the eye. Rapid-eye-movement, or REM, tends to correspond to the production of visual-emotional dreams, whereas non-REM sleep seems to produce more cognitive experiences. But can a non-REM dream be visual and a REM dream be cognitive? Sure, they can.
Rapid movement of the eyes is an activity during sleep only, but the "REM" cycle actually continues throughout the entire day. San Diego psychiatrists Daniel Kripke and David Sonnenschein have shown that while we are awake, our tendency to daydream also peaks about every ninety minutes. When they asked people to report and record daydreams, they discovered that there, too, we swing from emotional to logical and back again. Toward the end of each cycle, daydreams become especially vivid and fanciful. The same is true of nocturnal dreams.
Thus, the bio-chemistry that underlies the REM cycle is continuous around the clock. We can fall asleep any time and have visual or cognitive dreams. The dream movie theater is always open. Interspersed with intermissions, the films keep playing all day, but we only become aware of them when daytime perceptions are muted.
Because of this 24 hour cycle, the content and form of some sleeping dreams are quite similar to some waking imaginal experiences. In fact, they can be so similar, that certain cultures will use the same word to describe both. Even today, the terms "dreaming," "daydreaming" and "conscious dreaming" are being applied to waking state imagination and visualization. So are all imaginal experiences the same? No, they're not.
With the advent of technology, we have discovered that sleep involves different brain and body activity than waking. Eye movement, heartbeat and respiration alter. Major muscle movements disappear. Awareness of exterior life dims. More subtle shifts occur in pressure and chemical composition of bodily fluids, including blood flow. Most recently, sleep researchers have come to realize the changing chemistry of our brains. Given these shifts during sleep, it should be no surprise to realize that sleeping dreams include certain experiences that are *not* likely to be found while awake. Even when you are in a waking altered state.
Sleeping dreams are often more surreal than waking imagination; their imagery can morph. They can be more discontinuous and confused than waking imagination. There is a tendency to "begin" in the middle and "end" before completion of the drama. They are usually action sequences instead of stories. There are abrupt scene shifts to another place that is not congruous with even a meandering story line. And, most importantly, there is a break with regular waking experience. In such a state, one may not even realize that there *is* a waking experience. With fewer waking resources, the dream drama may find it hard to solve conflicts and problems dragged in from waking life.
So, while I treasure them in their own right, I don't call my daydreams, reveries, visualizations, imagination, meditative states, channeling, automatic writing, remote viewing or psychic readings "dreams." I consider them to be part of "daytime perceptions," whether they be in an "altered" state or not. Like the lab scientists, I define dreams as experiences occurring during sleep. It's the beginning and ending of the sleep cycle that is the main determinant for me, not the content or form of the experience. Why? I have 3 main reasons.
First, as a dream researcher, I'd be doing a disservice to the dream community and public at large if I couldn't distinguish between different states of consciousness. Or if I didn't screen the case studies I've received and reports I solicit before they are analyzed. My findings and conclusions would be skewed if I couldn't say anything definitive about that particular state called dream. When folks on-line ask me questions about dreams, especially students writing research papers, they expect to receive material about *sleeping* dreams, not just any 'ole oatmeal mush.
Second, as a member of a dream group, I'm interested in harmonious interactions and clear communications. I especially recall the conflict caused when people came to group with different ideas about what a lucid dream was supposed to be. It was like trying to juggle apples, berries and pears. Yes, they're all fruit. Yes, as the Jungians say, it's all part of the imaginal realm. But what confusion and frustration was engendered when people used the same word to mean different things. It required a bit of give-and-take to understand what we each were talking about. We came to consensus about the terms, not about the value of our personal experiences. Afterwards, we could compare them and discover the rich variety of ingredients that we cook up to create the pies cooling on the shelves of our communal dream restuarant.
Third, as a waking ego, I can be extremely self-centered. To treat my dreaming self as another person helps avoid such navel gazing. When I take on the reporter's role, when I write down a dream as a day in the life of my dreaming self...then compare her life with mine, I discover that we are not the same. She can fly, I can't. I have a husband and family, she can be single or married or both or neither. We have different attitudes and abilities. We have a different history. We live in different places. We might not even look the same. Or be the same gender. Or share the same choice of baked dessert.
My dreaming self is my Inner Child, my advisor, my hopeless victim, my nonsense generator, my Super Self, my golden opportunity to see things from a different perspective. All that rich variety is lost, that unique person with a special life is lost, when I lump every experience together and call it all Linda's imaginal realm, like my waking ego is queen of the inner universe. How selfish can I get?
I wish there were different terms to avoid confusion between daytime and nocturnal experience. We can certainly imagine-up some other words for the imaginal waking state. But let's keep "dreams" for sleep.

A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE
Report on the World Dreams Peace Bridge
Jean Campbell
o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o
The World Dreams Peace Bridge is an international group of dreamers, working together to create world peace. The Bridge is open to all. Send an email to:
worlddreams-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
One current project on the World Dreams Peace Bridge is the Peace Train Project, which grew from a dream of Jeremy Seligson. Here is his report on Peace Train activities in Korea:
"Many new peace trains arrived today, brought in by my students. About six, varying in length from 10 to 30 cars, beautifully put together in various ways, with wheels, engines and cabooses, linked together by two rings on each car side, colorful plastic rings or metal ones. The art work and messages of peace were done by elementary and middle school students from cities around Korea.
"Also on Friday, I will present the Peace Train to the International School's Faculty Conference. I'll begin by singing my newly-composed Peace Trainsong. (This, by the way, has been slightly revised, and I just talked to my Peace Corps friend in Austin who is a part-time Blues musician. He has agreed to write the music and record it with his group in a professional studio. I've sung it to three classes so far, and they really like it.)
"Then I will present the call for trains, explaining the dream origin of the train and its evolution in brief. I will ask them to go back to their own classes and make trains for us. Focusing on children, we avoid the political overtones which might turn some people away in these volatile, divisive days. However, I will also distribute colored paper to all the participants and ask them, while I am talking, to draw a picture of peace for a teacher's peace train, to be collected at the end of the session.
"I will also ask the teachers to talk to their neighbors and answer these questions for themselves:
1. What could be a good purpose of a Peace Train?
2. What could be drawn and written on a Peace Train
3. What good can a peace train do for a child helping to make one?
4. How can the peace train help other children, and adults too?
"This is just about as far as you can get from Washington, D.C., so it's a good place from which to start the ride across the world."
Members of the World Dreams Peace Bridge have discussed both having Peace Trains sent from people in one part of the world to people in another, and collecting Peace Trains for a book or other publications.
Dreams from members of the World Dreams Peace Bridge were used the first weekend in November at the Association for the Study of Dreams regional conference at JFK University in Orinda, California. Peace Bridge members, Fariba Bogzaran and Steve Smith presented these dreams along with others in the Awakening Project created by Fariba and her students in JKF's graduate studies program in Dreams.
And finally, the World Dreams Peace Bridge and Peace Train stores are now open for business. A great range of products from teddy bears to note cards, shirts, bags and stickers are available, bearing Peace Bridge and Peace Train logos. We encourage you to stop by at http://www.worlddreamspeacebridge.org/peacebridgeproducts.htm for Holiday Shopping. Each purchase brings an automatic $5 donation, which will be used to aid women and children in Afghanistan.

DreamShare : An Online Dream Community
Judith Gips
o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o
Dreamshare, an interactive, peer-led, moderated on-line dream discussion, is open to new members. The letter that follows will explain some of Dreamshare's procedures as well as the philosophical and practical underpinnings of this group. We are, as always, a work in progress. If you have questions or comments, please feel free to bring them to the attention of the group moderators at dreamshare-moderator@yahoogroups.com.
This dream sharing conference is open to all who want to work with us in a supportive, nonjudgmental cyber-climate, exploring the fascinating and revealing world of dream experiences. Members are free to post dreams they have had, ask general questions about dream-related matters or dream themes, dialogue about any dream on the list, and ask for commentary on their own dreams.
Dreamshare is somewhat unusual among Internet dream sites, in that we work to build some of the trust and intimacy that we associate with a well-functioning face-to-face dream sharing group. What this means, in practical terms, is that it is a moderated forum in which all posts, including those of the moderators, are approved by at least one other member before appearing in the general discussion.
In joining a moderated group, you are, in effect, accepting that some posts may be delayed, discussed with you or by a group of moderators, edited, or deleted before being posted to the entire group. The vast majority of submissions here are approved without problem, but please understand that we will sometimes act preventively to maintain group tone and cohesiveness
The original members met on another dream discussion board in the spring of 2000. We decided to start a moderated conference, in order to help to stay on-topic and build a sense of trust and mutual respect. Dreamshare has been meeting "in cyberspace" since May 2000. We are something approaching the ethnic, cultural, international, and intergenerational mix that many of us have hoped for. We also have considerable diversity of spiritual beliefs and practices, and of lifestyle and perspective.
In trying to replicate some of the intimacy and group intelligence of a well-functioning face-to-face dream group, we have needed to face some of the differences between working in the same room at the same time with others, and communicating through the disembodied medium of cyberspace. This has presented a challenge at times as well as an opportunity, and thanks are due to everyone who has contributed to this effort, whether or not those people are still participants in Dreamshare. Without their contributions, it couldn't, and wouldn't, happen.
We have also learned from some mistakes and unanticipated challenges, and some of the guidelines have been revised to continue to make this a safe, dynamic and entertaining dream site.
Before you attempt to comment on anyone else's dreams, please keep the following in mind:
a) This is a supportive environment, based on the principles of kindness and respect for all. You will encounter people with beliefs, practices, habits, and language very unlike your own at times, both when posting your own dreams and when reading the dreams and comments of others.
We encourage people not to censor themselves when relating dreams here. We understand that dreams often involve situations, issues, and images that may be painful or embarrassing to our waking-life selves. Our own relationships to death, loss, violence in ourselves or others, old family dramas, racism and other forms of prejudice and discrimination, and long-held secrets may be evoked by our own or someone else's dream material. There are no types of dream that are unacceptable, but language that insults someone or a group (e.g., "I was being chased by a bunch of worthless Arabs") or that is clearly designed to titillate or shock rather than to share an honest sleeptime dream and the feelings it brings up (e.g., "It feels so good when I have a wet dream, ummm.") will not be posted.
Obviously, there is an element of subjective judgment to all this, on the part of the moderators. We'll do our best to be respectful of the dream life, the dreamer, and the other members.
In responding to any dream posted, a member needs to be calm and open-minded. Our feeling is that an insight is worth little if it is hurtful to the person for whom it is intended.
One of the benefits to doing group dreamwork is that we can find common ground and shared intelligence with people with whom we might have little in common in waking life. Thus, a basic guideline for all members is to be courteous (a word that, like "courage", means something of the heart) and take an active interest in understanding others. Someone whose spiritual beliefs or lifestyle are far from your own is part of the same Big Picture as yourself.
b) In the same spirit as the above: Only the dreamer can say for certain what his or her dreams mean. Borrowing from friend and mentor to this group and its founders, Jeremy Taylor, (whose dream-related web site, www.jeremytaylor.com. we recommend strongly to all), we urge all participants to enter the dream world by imagining themselves in the dreamer's shoes, and stating their opinions in the first person as much as possible. For example, I might say, "If this were my dream, the wedding dress might be about commitments I want to make public" when responding to someone's dream about shopping for a wedding dress. Many group members have experienced insights into their own issues using this process, as well as sharing something of value to the dreamer.
This is not a hard-and-fast rule for posting, but we urge that everyone consider and experiment with the "if it were my dream" approach when commenting on anyone else's dream. Please be judicious in what you say, and practice consideration. "Insights" that shame or criticize others will usually be poorly received, and they tend to lead everyone away from the feeling of safety. Use of the "if it were my dream"
format is not necessarily a guarantee of mutual respect: for example, comments such as "if this were my dream, it might be telling me I really don't know what I'm talking about" are probably too harsh to be of value to many dreamers.
On this note, we have learned through experience that we are all human and subject to human frailties. In a group where people are
encouraged to "be themselves" on-line, you will undoubtedly feel more rapport with some people than with others. Not every dream or dreamer will evoke equal interest and empathy in each of us. This is okay; it's not necessary, or necessarily desirable, to comment on every dream or for any individual to interact with every member. We prefer that you confine your responses to those where you have a genuine sense of empathy with the dreamer.
Please be civil, and as clear as possible on your inner motivations and dramas before you write even to private e-mail out of anger or unrecognized hostility.
c) Clarification questions and dialogue are encouraged.
It's a good idea, though again not a strict rule, to indicate in the text of a dream submitted whether comments are welcomed or sought, if this is a touchy or painful matter for yourself as the poster, if there is graphic violence or sexual imagery involved, or if there are other issues of which you feel that we as readers and fellow members of Dreamshare should be aware.
If there is some part of a posted dream that is unclear to you as you read it, or you want to know more about a dreamer's waking life, go ahead and ask, keeping the principles of courtesy and kindness in mind of course. One good thing about e-mail is that we can dialogue without the time constraints that might exist in a face-to-face dream group. Before you comment on someone's dream, you might want to make sure you understand what it is that you are discussing. (This is often considered to be a necessary first step in the "if it were my dream" approach.)
d) We understand that there are privacy concerns unique to the Internet. You may choose to remain anonymous, using only your "screen handle" or you may give your name at your discretion.
We ask all prospective new members to introduce themselves, saying a little about their interest, and experience if any, with group dreamwork. As a friend on another forum put it, people speak more comfortably and honestly when they know who else is in the room. Some members' introductions are available in the Files menu, and can be reviewed by selecting "Files" from the Main Page. From time to time, we may request that continuing members re-introduce themselves as well. It can be interesting, and cast more light on the dream as well as the dreamer, to learn more about your Dreamshare "neighbors."
In a similar vein, if leaving the group after active interaction, a brief note either to the moderators or to the group as a whole is appreciated. If there is some way we can meet your needs better, we'd like to know about it. (See also item h))
Please respect the confidentiality needs of everyone on this conference. Some of this is basic Netiquette, and it is especially important here. Don't discuss the people involved here with others outside the conference, especially if they are identifiable by name or life circumstance. If anyone outside our membership list is interested in these dreams, refer them to the moderators. Do not repost anything that appears on this conference, or publish it in any form. Do not post anything here that did not originate with you, whether it is a friend's dream or an interesting piece of news. You may reprint published material on dreams that is excerpted as long as the source is credited fully.
In this same vein, you are free to email anyone whose personal address is available as a co-member of Dreamshare, but please respect their needs and rights to decide what mail to receive and to answer, and on what schedule. Remember that people are busy with their jobs and lives as well, and an answer may be forthcoming but not precisely when you want it.
If you decide that this place is not right for you, there will be no offense taken if you decide not to participate. Please don't stick around to post angry "flame" messages, practical jokes, teases, or any form or harassment or putdown. Life can be hard enough as it is, and people are sharing a vulnerable part of themselves when talking about their dream life. As moderators, we will put our collective foot down about this sort of behavior.
e) Everyone needs to understand that this is an egalitarian space in which the validity of someone's opinion is judged by the response of the dreamer and the people reading the dream, and not by credentials of any kind. No one, including the moderators, is here in a "professional" capacity. Psychotherapists are as welcome as anyone to join this list, as equal members of the Dreamshare group. You are encouraged to consult a mental health professional of your choice if you are seeking such services. This list is for mutual help and enjoyment, and may well have a beneficial effect on your life, but it is not psychotherapy as the term is commonly understood. All participants: please be prepared to be a peer to anyone on the list; this is not a place to seek, nor to dispense, "expert advice." Even suggesting that someone may need to speak with an expert is sometimes seen as interventive and/or intrusive. Be very careful.
f) You are not obliged to comment on every dream, to visit or post on the list every day or at any given interval. It's better to wait until you have the time and opportunity to write a meaningful response than to simply hop in because you feel you "should."
We actively discourage "over-posting." This is rather a subjective judgment, but as a general guideline, more than five posts in any 24-hour period may be excessive and give the impression of someone talking over others during meetings.
Don't become too impatient if there is no response for a while after you post a dream. If some dream of really major impact to you has gone without response for some time, you can ask, courteously, if anyone is able to work with this dream. Please remember that Dreamshare is an all volunteer effort, and we are all busy people.
g) We will be posting suggestions, as we go along, for improving dream recall, working with dreams alone and with other people, resolving some "nightmare" energy and other problems, and related topics. Please feel free to post questions on these issues; there may be some wonderful ideas shared in this way, and it will let us know what others want by way of improving their relationship with their dreams. Again, we recommend, highly, the books and materials available from Jeremy Taylor for a broad introduction to working with dreams and the unconscious; see his web site cited above for ordering information, or ask at your local bookstore.
h) Please let the group know when you are exiting as well as entering the group, either by posting or via one of the moderators. This helps build the kind of "caring circle" we envision and diminishes the "invisible cafe" feeling. Repeated subscription and unsubscription is discouraged. We have found that multiple arrivals and departures can be quite disruptive, especially if there is some emotional agenda involved. If you are going to be absent for some time but think you would like to return to active posting in the future, please consider a "no-mail" membership in Dreamshare instead of leaving the group. Email a moderator for the group if the mechanics of changing delivery options are not clear.
i) There is a functioning group of several moderators (about 7 active at the time of this writing, November 2002.) You can find out who they are by reviewing the "members" page; moderators are marked with a star. Because all posts are approved in advance of appearing, there is a fair amount of work involved in reading and following the discussions on the site. This can sometimes result in a delay before a post appears on the group list.
At times, a post may also be delayed if there are some questions about its suitability or timing. .
j) As a practical note: please send plain, unenriched e-mail text whenever possible. We welcome artwork and photos, which can be uploaded to Files, but to prevent virus spread and make attachments easier for all to read, we encourage non-HTML mail if possible. Not everyone can read posts with a lot of "bells and whistles." Contact a moderator if this is unclear.
k) We encourage you to enjoy your dreams! We regard the dream as a living entity, a visitor that deserves to be treated with respect and gratitude even if it sometimes speaks a language that is difficult to understand.
As we see it, it's a mistake to separate and reject dreams that are powerfully frightening when they occur, from the rest of our dream life. The difficult dreams that some call "nightmares" or "bad dreams" are often those that have the most valuable of gifts for us. As you continue to explore your dreams, you will come to see beauty and perhaps humor as well as precious guidance in all kinds of dreams.
The Dreamshare group.
P.S. In the interests of building group caring and rapport, we also encourage friendly support and sharing of our waking-life triumphs and setbacks. We'd like to recognize birthdays, graduations, and other important milestones in each other's lives, express condolences to the bereaved, and send healing thoughts to those afflicted with illness or other difficulties. We have a regularly scheduled healing circle based on mutual dreaming; details on that will be given in a separate post in the near future.

Subject: In My Room
This dream has repeated itself many times...different scenarios. I am going to my bedroom, which is more like an apartment out of the 30's. A beauty shop cropped up in the next room....very crowded and noisy. I again go to my bedroom. It not only has pool tables in it, but guys are playing pool. I am very frustrated and annoyed that these people and places have invaded my privacy and feel like I have nowhere to go to escape the woes of the world. Any clues?

I am attempting to cross the road but whenever I think I have a chance a car in the distance will start skidding (cars from the '30s) and turning around and around, sort of slowly and beautifully, towards my path. Dear Anonymous,
Your dream was very interesting. The presence of your parents along with your ex suggests that whatever problems you "bought into" with him are part of your childhood and growing up patterns, not unique to the relationship with him. He has gone but you "buy into" his living space....in other words, you are not relinquishing the problems. The stormy waves suggest a lot of powerful unconscious material, suppressed memories and unresolved feelings surround these problems. Like starving dogs the problems may attack if they are not tended to. But if you take care of a starving dog, it will become your closest friend and staunchest protector. You have some emotional growth ahead of you that may be painful and difficult, but well worth your effort. I would suggest that you get involved in some expressive arts, if you don't do that already. Your dream shows a rich capacity, a strong spirit.

Dear Shadow,
These events really happened? Dreams that foretell death are not that uncommon. Usually there is a stronger connection to the person. Perhaps this man's feelings for you were stronger than your feelings for him at that stage. His spirit could see death coming (all our spirits can, even when it is a sudden accident) and found a way to tell you it's ok.
You may have a sensitivity for the spirit world that enabled this communication. If you are not already involved in a religious or meditative pursuit, you might consider exploring that direction for yourself. If you do so, avoid the "dry" conventional churches and look for a "spirit-filled" congregation.

Dear anonymous,
It's a little difficult to interpret this dream without your age and your mother's age. I am assuming you are a young adult and your mother is mmenopausal or post-menopausal. When we go through transitions in life, such as from adolescence into adulthood, there is a small "death" of our old self and a "borning" of our new self. The connections to parents have to die for us if we are to become full fledged adults, and this dream may have been about that "death", not actual death. It is wonderful that your emotions are alive and well, enabling you to keep the love connections open even when the "parent" connections die.

Dear Sick,
The fact that your husband is having these dreams does not mean he is having sex with your daughter, but it does mean that he is at least struggling with the issue. Are you able to talk with him about the dreams? Can he talk about his feelings as a father of a blooming young woman? You both should seek counseling together so that you can have those necessary conversations. It's up to you to open the issue with him, assuming the best, and if the worst is true, you will find out in the process. Your daughter needs you to do this for her. God bless you!

Dear Surty,
Your dream seems to be telling you that you have neglected the softer, more feminine side of your personality because you are afraid of the weakness that is associated with females. You seem, in the encounter with your female friend, to associate womanhood with chaos. The female nature is often identified with dark, amorphous life. Are you involved in the arts? Working with dark female imagery, lots of messy reds and browns, might be very soothing for you.

Dear Eleni,
"Teeth falling out" is one of those classic dream images that almost everyone has at one time or another. It is commonly believed that this is related to stress in one's waking life, and a feeling of loss of control. Is your life too busy? You might need to take a little "time out" now and then.

Just a possible alternative interpretation: Your husband might feel an alienation from your daughter and is unhappy about that. His dreams may be a way of feeling a strong intimacy that he doesn't feel in real life. Often times when I am fighting with a friend, I have sex dreams about them. It doesn't always mean sex. On the other hand, in case I'm wrong...put a lock on her door. Tom

People who recur in our dreams are said to be parts of ourselves that we're somehow neglecting in our waking life. I don't know what this guy means to you, but here is something you might try: Sit down at a quiet moment with paper and pen, meditate on this man and picture him as clearly as you can, and ask him to start telling you what he wants to say. Then just write whatever comes to mind.

I think to myself that I must fatten up this rat so that it will be of some nourishment to the python. I proceed to cut up- something to feed to this starving rat. I stop and notice that I have a hatchet and I just chopped some meat off to give to this rat, but I then realized that I had just chopped the center part of the python's body out with the hatchet and killed the python. I was devastated at the realization of what I had done. I woke to feel very disturbed by that dream and couldnt shake that feeling all day.
dream_comments: I have been intrigued by the meaning of this dream, for a very long time any comments or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you....Maria O

dream_text: Outside there are various buildings and a church, there are enourmous polished spheres that move effortlessly, they don't seem to roll but glide through the buildings which are then destroyed. A few of the spheres have spikes on the surface but all of the spheres seem threatening. I run into the church for sanctuary and seem to be safe from them for now. The interior has highly detailed woodwork with intricate engravings and my attention is directed on how fine and creative the work is. During the course of the dream I still feel as though there is some intelligence to the spheres as if they are searching for me. I am searching for someone important I need to save while hoping to be saved myself.
dream_comments: I'm not sure how I can relate anything to these spheres, they don't seem to correspond to anything recognizable, maybe simply outside forces I have to contend with that seem insurmountable. I take the church to mean I cannot ignore my spirituality while trying to deal with adversity. Maybe I'm the one I'm trying to save.

dream_date: 10-27-02

dream_text: My dream began with a knowledge that I was on an assignment with my partner (my mom), to help someone in some way I'm unsure of. We wern't the only ones with a misson, but then again, not everyone who existed had one. The surroundings were very odd.The world had different levels and altitudes, and the number of people existing on each level decreased as you went up. My mom and I left right away, in a normal vehical traveling straight upwards on what appeared to be railroad tracks. There were two lanes. As we went up, the clouds became darker and I noticed there were less people on the roads. We soon came close to a semi, who was ahead of us in the other lane at first and then he was behind us but still in the other lane. Then I watched his car flip, sparks flew, he fell of the tracks, and I knew he was gone. I closed my eyes because I didn't want our car to fall. I wanted to be at our misson site. I finally opened my eyes, and told my mom maybe if we came off at level 6000, that we would reach who we needed to. She agreed, we turned in on the next road, and arrived where we needed to be. I don't know who we helped or how, but our misson was complete.
dream_comments: In the beginning when we received the mission, both of us knew the mission had great risk involved. We never spoke of the risks, we just knew. Also, falling off the tracks at any of the higher levels, always meant death.

dream_text: I keep a dream journal, which I always try to record them when I wake up...if I even remember having one. Looking back through it, I saw this one, and I still remember it vividly, because it seemed like it was happening for real at the time. 'I had a disturbing dream last night that I could only interpret as the end of the world....(armageddon?)....I was on a beach, reading a book, with lots of other people enjoying the beach, when a strong wind started to pick up, blowing sand and dust, the sky turned a very ugly bruise-like yellowish gray, huge dark thunderous clouds rolling in as it got windier and windier, the ocean started to roil, tidal wave, and shoot up in geyser-like streams while the earth started shaking something fierce, the water was rapidly rising and people trying to run, all panicking, screaming, mass hysteria and strangely I just sat there and resigned myself to the fact that this was the end, the water splashing around me, and then I woke up in a start, my heart pounding.' It still creeps me out.

dream_text: I was at the police department, but it felt like part of it was in the basement. Everything was immediately off. There weren't enough people and the lighting was dimmer. I followed this officer into a room for something. He lifted up this series of folders with tabs labeling the cases all facing up except for the back one was labelled on the bottom with a yellow sticky tab. It was hanging almost ready to come off and it said 10-18 on it. I thought immediately I have got to get a hold of Mary and let her know. The officer left me there, and I had to find my way around. I went down this dark hall and I think I ended up in the basement. It felt like something was following me. This bad spirit that looked part native american/ but part white... heavyset with long dark hair... surrounded me. She was behind me , but then instantly in front of me and all around me and then behind me again... whispering in my ear "cage... 10-18..." and something else inaudible. The energy of the dream was so strong that it felt like it transferred into my bunk and that she was sitting in front of me while I was sleeping. In the dream, I then headed down the hall and up a couple of stairs and saw a navajo or hopi guy doing dispatch through soundproof glass. He looked normal/unpossessed but he was oblivious to my presence. The hallway turned right and opened out into light. There was a woman by a desk doing work and talking animatedly. I thought, Okay, I will go up to her and ask her to call mary because she looked normal. I walked up to her as she was hanging up the phone and asked her. She said," What's your #?" I came closer to her. She was looking down when she picked up the phone. I started to tell her my # and she looked at me, started to dial, and grabbed my hand. The spirit had moved around the room and I watched it possess her. Her face turned older, gray, and skeleton-like. With my hand in hers, she said my # aloud, and we punched the #'s together on the pad,"623-334..." and then she lifted my hand away from the phone and started to crumple it in her hand with a pearing knife causing my fingers to crumple and bleed.
dream_comments: At the time of this dream I was training to drive for SWIFT Transportation, and I was on a semi in Oklahoma. The dream was also weird because I awoke from the nightmare at about 9:30pm... My trainer suggested to me to go back to sleep several times, and when finally I was calm enough to go back to sleep, I just happened to look at the clock and it was 10:18pm. This is one of the creepiest dreams I have ever had...... any comments?

dream_text: I had a dream the other night that I was in some sort of abondond factory. There was a party going on in the factory with a buch of my past friends. There were lots of little tents set up in the factory and people were sleeping in them. I saw an old friend walking around and she looked somewhat drugged out on something. She came over and kissed me twice on the cheek and said "bye" then walked away. I was very worried about her even though I haven't talked to her or seen her in about seven years.
I then saw another old friend who I haven't seen in about seven years and asked her what was wrong with the friend who kissed me on the cheek. She said " well, we don't talk to her anymore." in a kind of mean voice. The dream started to fade at this point.
dream_comments: It's very confusing. I wonder what the two friends I saw have to do with my life at this point.

I think that dreams often help us deal with the things that our consciousness has trouble dealing with. I hav also heard that when you dream of a person who has died or of a tragedy that your mind is just learning to deal with it fully. This dream might just be your brain's way of completing some of the grieving.
