Editor's Notes

=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

Dreaming in Cyberspace continues to evolve along side other
Net projects that promote the positive presence of
networking, communication and individual expressions of
creativity. It is a real pleasure to me to be a part of this
regular monthly pulse of global dreams, dream research, dream
events and dream news.

It was upsetting to me to hear about the events in San
Diego with the Heavensgate cult, and I have noticed the
shadow this event has cast on all fringe groups, all
discussions of ufos, near death, Internet and alternative
interests & lifestyles. As with other tragedies, I'm hoping
the dream sharing community will respond as we always do,
with the sharing of dreams, the continual re-assessment of
our values and the exploration of the not-often heard voices
of the soul. Rather than pulling back, I'm hoping we pull out
of the closet our dreams of cults, leaders, ufos, death and
aliens and explore these in light of current events. For more
on this, see my comments in Victoria Quinton's Dream Airing
Column.

As a positive counter-balance in spirituality, Dream Screen
is now Online. Chris Hicks unique site integrates Christian
beliefs and Dreamwork, though site is for the faithful in all
beliefs. In keeping with the spirit of the site, the focus
this month is the Uranie Dream Incubation Project, using
dreams to help a young woman with Leukemia.

How do you know if a dream is a psychic dream or if we are
just fooling ourselves? Dream Pioneer Linda Magallon offers
us two essential ways, both via verification and the
existential quality of the experience. We may be having more
psychic dreams than we realize. Read more about this her
Dream Trek column.

Do you ever wonder if all this dreamwork is really worth the
trouble? Alissa Goldring, in her usual personal and graphic
fashion, delves into this issue and has an artpiece to go
along with it. Read her column, Life , Art, Dream, drop by
her site to see the artpiece.

Charles Mcphee continues his research on lucid dreaming and
the role of consciousness and shares these investigations in
chapter summaries of his book, Stop Sleeping Through Your
Dreams.

The Topics in Dreamwork Series continues this month with
Alfred Adler & Dream Styles. We hear so much about Jung and
Freud, but Adler was a prominent figure in Psychology as well
. Learn about his view of dreams a practice environments.

Madame Aionia gets some help from Island this month as the
Astrological Dreaming Through the Houses Series continues
with Third House dreaming. Learn what Third House dreams are
and how this can enhance your dreamwork.

What's going on with dream events this month? Not only is
the Association for the Study of Dreams Conference just
around the corner, but seminars and meetings are happening
all around the world and in Cyberspace. Also, there are
several deadlines you might want to review and some exciting
online education classes. If you can help out with the
research projects, please do so today. Also, note the many
new dream related sites. Peggy Coats will bring you up to
date in The Global Dreaming News.

Where do all these dreams and comments on dreams in
Electric Dreams come from? There are many sources, including
email notes, requests from Usenet groups, and mail lists.
Most come from the ed-core@igc.apc.org mail list which is
free and open to everyone to join. Simply send an email to:
majordomo@igc.apc.org and in the body of the email put
subscribe ed-core
When you send a dream in the ed-core, it is collected and
published the following month along with comments that also
come in via the ed-core mail list.

Bob Krumhansl puts these dreams and comments together for
your each month and organizes them for your delight and
pleasure. This month offers a wide range of dreams and
comments on dreams. Bob also has a update and editorial
section on the dreams that will guide you though the many
images offered.

Dreams are also shared via small dream groups, such as the
dream-on@igc.apc.org mail list, which we call the Electric
Dreams DreamWheels. These dreams are not usually published
and the groups last about 2 weeks each. They are also now
available on the WWW at DreamLynx. Chris Hicks has all the
details for you in The Spinning Wheel.

There are also other ways you can participate in the
Electric Dreams community. We are really having fun getting
the message out about dreams and dreaming and if you would
like to join us, read the "Be an Electric Dreamer" article.

Be an Electric Dreamer!

=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

Electric Dreams continues to offer a wide variety of free
dreamsharing venues and this means we log a lot of online
time. It is fun and we do this because we love it! But
sometimes we can't keep up with all the networking tasks and
then the quality is diminished in our programs.

And not everyone has the time to be a staff member
(though if you *do* have the time and desire, drop me a
line!).

And so we would like to ask for ELECTRIC DREAMERS -
volunteers who can give just a few minutes every week or even
once a month. Here are some of the ED areas that Electric
Dreamers might help in:

- Co-Moderate a dream group.
- Start a column on ED about your favorite topic in dreams.
- Post a few dreams to a few Newsgroups or Mail lists.
- Post an ad regularly to a Newsgroup you will "sponsor".
- Post an ad to a mail list you will "sponsor".
- Post an ad to a SIG at your commercial online carrier.
- Surf the net for new dream web sites.
- Surf Educational college sites for dream bibliographies
- Send in addresses of magazine departments that might like
to carry a story about dream sharing in cyberspace
- Send in local resources on dreams - groups, schools,
lectures, library resources, newsletters and new age papers.
- Check you Yellow Pages for schools and ask what programs or
classes on dreams and dreaming dreams are available.
- Many other projects available!

Be and Electric Dreamer, sign up today...

Are you familiar with Marc Barlow's multimedia CD, "The Dream
Guide"? If so, I am looking for reviews and comments. Send
to Richard Wilkerson, rcwilk@aol.com

He describes it as follows:

Since June 1996 I have been producing what I believe is the
first CD-Rom interactive video for dream analysis. The
product "The Dream Guide: Self-Analysis" is based on the work
of William Rector, professor of psychology and counseling at
CSU, Chico. There are similarities to Gayle Delaney's
structure but Rector's work includes other perspectives,
also.

Heavensgate and Cult Dreams

Since this event has been a collective conscious magnet, I
thought we might all keep an eye on our dreams to see how
they respond. If you are having dreams about the cults,
UFOs, death, space, ect, send them in with a pen name and
title - mark them as "Cult Dreams" and send to Bob Krumhansl

Heavensgate, dreams and UFO's

Just processing out loud. I generally support and/or allow
consenting adults to live - and die - as they choose. So as a
democratic citizen, I can just say fare-thee-well to the the
Heavensgate cult. But as a dreamworker I have an ear for
metaphor - for what an image is saying. Its not that I feel
every image is actually trying to tell me something, its just
that the 'message' perspective is one I have chosen to
develop. Had the group gone to sea and left nothing, that
would be a different event for me than the statement left in
San Diego.
I'm not interested in indulging Heavensgate with
speculations about the possible conscious meanings they may
have intended in their death display. Rather I desire to make
meaning of the bad taste I have left about the event.

I find it interesting that in all the investigations into
the meaning of the San Diego tragedy that Jung's writings on
UFO's has not been mentioned. I'm bringing it up here as it
relates to dreams of UFO's as well as fantasies, hopes,
wishes and fears.

Jung's view, as put forth in volume 10 and 18 of his
collected works, is that UFO's, regardless of their external
reality, really do something to us psychologically. They are
a kind of modern myth and a configuration of the new savior,
or a pre-configuration of the Self. As early as 1946 he was
writing warnings about them and how the undeveloped beliefs
would escalate towards the millennium.

Flying Saucers complete the fantasy that something
unknown and powerful outside of us is going to come and save
us. Jung's issue is that regardless of the outer truth of
their being a Higher Truth and Being that will save us, there
is an inner image that will cause havoc when its not dealt
with. Thus his statement to Bill W. who started AA, that
unless he had a powerful religious experience, he was lost.

My reading of modern Jungians reveals a more liberal view,
and the issue is less about having a religious experience
than adequately coming into relationship with the part of us
that desires such experience. This seems to follow the trend
in psychology as evidenced in the move from psychdelics to
re-birthing, Rolfing to bio-enegetics and Gestalt
confrontation to empathetic mirroring. Still, one way or the
other, the religious impulse seems to cause trouble when
inadequately responded to. Our culture (Late 20th Century
Western Capitalism) attempts to stay ahead of this issue
through consumer intake-ism and manic market extention, but
this just feeds the idea that we can take something to deal
with our inner desires. Hmm, a flying-aspirin?

Anyway, Jung feels when we don't come into relationship
with this inner necessity, it gets projected out. That is, we
see our Better Self, our Higher Self, our more Desirable Self
in others, and other things. This works well for little kids
with good parents and siblings. This works well in a society
where we have adequate wiser older guides. This is how
classical psychotherapy works. We first see in others what we
wish to become, we love them, we identify with them, we
strive to be like them. When we are young, we tend to
identify with them completely, and later we learn to just
identify with the qualities we desire.
But in an environment where the person being identified
with is themselves deeply disturbed, or where there *is* no
person that adequately represents the inner necessity, then
the process of projection can work against a person's
evolution and development. We are very vulnerable when we
shed our old skins and identify with something or someone
new. Ask anyone who has fallen in love with someone where
that love is not returned.

What can be done? Jung often suggested the "take the board
out of thine own eye" approach, with a slight modification. Few
of us have plans to become cult leaders or followers... or do
we? Usually we define cult in terms of the outer world, but
how many inner cults do we run and maintain? How many of our
feelings have we isolated and tried to convince that they are
better off dead? Do we offer our neglected/rejected feelings a
better life if they would just stop bugging us? And we are not
just talking about feelings, but whole hosts of ideas, beliefs,
and secret hopes and desires.
How often do we hear about the cult of consciousness, for
example? No, it's not called that, but its very popular these
days. "If we were just more conscious," goes the refrain. Do
you feel consciousness is the savior?

How do we recognize that projection *is* taking place? How
can we know this if its an mostly unconscious process? Without
the support of a family, community or therapeutic relationship,
this may be difficult. Doing dreamwork alone to catch this kind
of projection is still in its infancy and most think that while
a myriad of benefits can come from doing dreamwork alone,
catching unconscious projections may not be part of this. Some
feel that by definition, we miss this part of the dream. To be
unconscious of these parts of our personality is just that,
unconscious.
Or are we like our cars and vans? We can change the oil
regularly, put in gas and check the tire pressure, but every
once in awhile we need a tune up by a professional?

One of the key elements in abuse by higher powers seems to
be isolation. This is a difficult area, because most creative
and new projects needs some incubation period away from the
limelight. Its true that watchfulness may keep abuse from
happening, but too much watchfulness doesn't allow the water to
boil.

How does this isolation factor play out in personal dreamwork?
The groups seem to find and create their own containers of
safety, but what about those dreams we never share with anyone
but ourselves? Jermey Taylor once suggested that we might try
a ritual sharing with ourselves. In this procedure, we write
down the dream and all the wildest associations, all the most
anti-social material we can come up with, and them burn the
paper.
Whether the magic of the ritual is works or not is only part
of the point. What will be revealed to you is the level of
tolerance you have for your own toxic material.

Alien Dreams
For me, I like to note the appearance of UFO's and aliens in
dreams as a potential for encounter with parts of the universe
I have up to this time been unaware. In other words, the dreams
both serve as an opening to new parts of myself and life as
well as a warning that I've got these aliens desires wandering
around that I may not be relating well or integrating very
well. Or the dream may offer new ways of relating to these
alien aspects. James Hillman and others have noted that we
often over-integrate the material of dreams and thereby miss
the direct experiential, existential encounter with the image.
This helps so that "relationship" doesn't attempt to become a
cult leader either.

So, would things have been different if heavensgate members
had practiced dreamwork, or would Applewhite have appropriated
the imagery for his own uses? I want to be careful that
"dreamwork" doesn't become a flying saucer either. This may
come about in the understanding of boundaries and limits.

I'm curious about other people views on dreams and cults,
and invite you to send in your views or join us on the ed-core
mail list for a discussion of this topic. If you get a chance,
read the ASD Ethics Statement and we can also talk about how
this might relate to deam work in Cyberspace

The Spinning Wheel: Dream Wheel Update
by Chris Hicks

=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

The latest E-mail Dream Wheel is going strong! We have many
active members asking some excellent clarification questions of
the first dreamer. With the new one dream at a time process
there are new opportunities for people to join us during a
group. So, send your requests to join to me, Chris at:
dreamwheel@michweb.net, today!

The WWW groups have been slow to take off due to some technical
problems, but things are looking up with the new WWW Bulletin
Board format! The new format will eliminate the long lag times
between submitting questions/answers/comments and seeing them
up at the Dream Lynx site. In addition, there are some "neato"
things in the works for further smoothing things out for the
WWW Dream Wheels! If you haven't seen the WWW Dream Wheels, or
haven't seen them lately check us out at:

http://www.iag.net/~hutchib/.dream

Click on "Wheel" from the main menu. Please note that the
current postings, although real dreams, are serving to test the
new system. You are free to post questions as you normally
would for a Dream Wheel group. Please disregard the instruction
messages as they are out dated.
The small un-moderated groups continue to move along. There
seems to be a core of a few groups that have stuck together
since they were first started some months ago. Next month look
for a mini-interview with a member from one of the first small
groups.

If you would like to submit a dream(s) for either the E-mail or
WWW Dream Wheel groups please email it to me, Chris at:

dreamwheel@michweb.net

Please include a short title for all submitted dreams and the
pen name you would like to use in the group.

For more information about the Dream Wheel groups, including
their history, and a description of the "If it were my dream"
technique go to:

DREAM TREK
By Linda Lane Magallon

Personal Clues to Psychic Dreams

=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=

How can we tell if a dream is psychic? The only fool-proof way
is verification. We take the time to check our dreams against
waking life or the dreams of others. In the continuing process
of validation, though, we may come to discover inner *cues*
that tip us off to further psychic dreams. These cues do not
apply to everyone; they are very personal.

Dreamworker Gayle Delaney says she notices an *echo-y* effect.
Robert Van de Castle's psychic dreams have *a grabbing,
indelible quality.* Another dreamer has dreams *in black and
white, with a grainy texture, just like an old time movie.*

The appearance of a particular person might mean that some part
of our dream applies to him, but there's no guarantee. Lucid
dreamers, especially, know that we have the dreaming ability to
create thought forms for our own private use...even thought
forms of other people.

I find it more reliable when a strange symbol appears in my
dreams or some odd dreamland event occurs that is not the norm
for me. Of course, I wouldn't know the difference between a
*normal* and *unusual* element unless I recorded lots of dreams
and periodically took the time to review them. Then I take the
new symbol or event in hand and go on a treasure hunt to find
its matching pair. This means talking to people to find out
about their dreams and waking life.

People and places have certain feelings associated with them.
If you spend time doing visualization exercises, pay attention
to the feelings that various images and memories spark. Then
when you awake from a dream awash in feelings, you may be able
to make a connection, even if the blatant imagery leaves you
scratching your head.

Some dreamers do use what the scientists have come to call
*tracer elements.* Tracer elements are special recurrent
symbols. Nowadays they tend to be the ones that feature
equipment which perceives or communicates, such as telephones,
television, telescopes and cameras. But they could be any image
of personal significance.

One dreamer knows something good is going to happen to her when
she hears music in a dream. In the middle of a music dream one
night, she was awakened by her crying baby. She was so anxious
to see what the music might portend that after the baby had
settled down, she reviewed the half-finished dream over and
over until she fell to sleep. The dream picked up the music
once again and she saw images of a car, the seaside and sand.
The next weekend her husband suggested a picnic which, indeed,
turned out to be by the seaside.

Dreamworker Will Phillips has spent a long time looking for
ways to differentiate between precognitive dreams and *normal*
ones. Was it tracer elements? Was it higher levels of vividness
or intensity? Sometimes these applied to his psychic dreams,
but not always. Will finally came to the conclusion that ALL
dreams are potentially psychic. I agree.

But when we take the time and effort to discover specific
psychic connections in our lives, we stop hypothesizing about
the holographic universe or the collective unconscious. We
change second-hand theory into first-hand personal reality. We
dream ourselves psychic.

Frig Image

REFRIGERATOR

Once in a while I find myself wondering , " Alissa, why do
you spend all this time on dreams?" Then along comes a dream
that makes me laugh, or gives me insight or wakes me up, and
often carries meaning for others as well -- and I know it's
all very worthwhile. Like this one; and when I told it to a
friend she exclaimed, "That's me too! You should see the piles
in my office!"

The dream ( Saturday, February 15, 1997)

"I have some meat and chicken I'm carrying from a
public place where I had stored it, to put into my refrigerator
to cook later. But I see that my frig is packed over full, and
the top part, the freezer too. And it is not working, there is
no electricity. It is not cold, but it is bursting with a solid
wall of packed stuff. Nothing is staying fresh, yet I'm trying
to add more. . ."

Although the frig was vividly clear, it did not look like an
ordinary frig -- there were no shelves on the doors or inside.

Of course I asked myself, Is this a picture of my
accumulations, clutter? I thought of my endless struggle with
the mail, paperwork, letters to answer, books to read, slides
to store, files to sort, dreams to index, etc etc etc!!! -- not
to mention maintenance: laundry and marketing, cooking and
eating, walking and swimming and time with family and friends,
and perhaps see a film! -- and the hope to create space for the
"real work" of painting and writing! No wonder I felt like a
jam-packed storage.

But I've been going on like this, rather hopelessly, for
years, with periodic bouts of cleanup and reorganization and
fresh starts. My Mac Desktop is a case in point !I feel myself
drowning in the mass of information inundating us on every
side. I see myself like a wide-eyed child at a vast buffet --
wanting to taste everything, and getting indigestion while
trying to save up tempting morsels for later.

I see that I am in a ridiculous, hopeless situation. An
impasse. This dream shows me how ludicrous my efforts are. But
it does not give an answer. I will have to find the solution in
living. What the dream does is free me from blind repetition,
from being stuck in trying harder in the old habits. It asks
me, is this what you want to be doing?

There is a saying that a problem cannot be solved on the
level of the problem. Which is what I'd been trying to do for
so long. The mind which created the situtation cannot extricate
itself. Was it Hercules who, challenged to undo a knot which no
one could untie, cut the Gordian Knot with his sword?

I see that I must stop accumulating right now, and let go the
previous pile up. This requires a total change of attitude and
action and goes deep into my *need to collect*. This frig part
of myself makes me look at my definition of myself - am I
what I save? or are they my habitual substitutes for love,
security and trust, no less!

Previously we began exploring just what we *are* aware of in
dreams and lucid dreams, a good first step in actually becoming
lucid. In Earlier issues we explored the phenomena of dream
sleep and consciousness. In ED 3(11) I continued to unfold the
investigation into whether or not we actually possess
consciousness in dream and what this can mean to our lives, as
well as exploring more deeply what consciousness is and what it
appears to be, and how conscious techniques like journaling can
bring about more lucidity and dream recall.

From CHAPTER 9: "The Language of Dreams"

In chapter seven we observed that lucid experience with dreams
would challenge some familiar habits of self-identification.
Once we acquire conscious experience with the dreamscape, the
real mystery is who is responsible for creating the dream.

The dichotomy we sense between our self and our dreams is quite
real. Even when we know, somewhere in the back of our mind,
that we are creating the dream we are simultaneously
interacting with, the dream maintains its structure and
identity apart from "us". It is impossible to totally control
the events of a dream, as the transformations and symbolism
continually surprise us. Thus, even though we are the creators
of our dreams, we find we exercise only tenuous control over
them. We may truthfully say that we are engaged with another
element that insists on its own identify. Paradoxically,
however, we also are this other element--who else could it be?
So if we both experience the dream and create it, what does
this reveal about our true self?

***********

Dreams, despite their nonsensical appearance, obey a few simple
principles of construction. The sooner we can learn these
principles, the sooner we will learn to speak the language of
dreams. When we do, we will find a faithful correspondent
within our self, and also a great ally. Dreams, once we are
able to understand them, complement our limited waking
abilities. They give us access to levels of awareness that we
otherwise might never know exist.

A STRANGE, EMOTIONAL DREAM

To illustrate, let's say a woman learns in her waking life that
her lover of two years' time is being unfaithful to her. But
to make the situation more difficult to decipher, let's say she
learns of this infidelity only unconsciously--that is,
something her lover did recently tipped her off that something
was wrong, and the vibes between her and her lover are
different. Unconsciously she suspects--indeed, she is aware--
that her lover is being unfaithful. But let's also say that
she is repressing this awareness, that she hasn't allowed it to
become conscious yet, because at a certain level, she doesn't
want to know. She wants the relationship to be different from
how it is.

A day or two after becoming unconsciously suspicious of the
infidelity, she dreams that she is with her lover on an ocean
cruiser, far out at sea. She is at the bow of the ship,
looking forward at the board expanse of ocean, and holding on
to the railing; a gentle breeze brushes against her cheek.
Suddenly the boat develops a huge gash in its hull. She rushes
to the side and peers over the edge. She sees that a giant
fish with a red, pointed collar around its neck has hit the
boat, and the boat is now sinking rapidly. The fish, killed by
its collision with the boat, floats alongside. Suddenly she is
at the bow again, but her lover is gone. She looks about
anxiously to discover where he is. Down a walkway she sees one
of her lover's old friends, someone she met once at a college
reunion. At this point she forgets about her lover. The ship
is listing badly; and this distant acquaintance is having
difficulty climbing toward her. Interestingly, she does not
try to help the person. Rather, she watches intently as she
tries to move toward her. The individual is grabbing the
railing and crying out for help. The dreamer says to herself,
"If she had worn the right shoes, she wouldn't be getting wet."
With this thought, she awakens.

**********

UNCONSCIOUS AWARENESSES IN EVERYDAY EXPERIENCE

In everyday experience, we often become unconsciously aware of
information, only to later become actively aware of what we
have known unconsciously for some time. Says a few nights
before you are planning to leave on a car trip, you have a
disturbing dream. You are on a highway heading off to some
mountains in the distance, when suddenly the car swerves and
fishtails. You barely miss having an accident. In the dream,
you were aware that one of your tires had gone bad, and this
was the cause for loss of control. Because of this dream, the
next day you inspect your tires. Much to your surprise, you
find that one of your tires is indeed bald. Was the dream
portentous? Was it a communication from a guardian angel?
Perhaps, but another explanation is that, at some point in the
past, you became aware unconsciously that the car was steering
poorly at high speeds. Or perhaps you noticed the tire one
morning when you entered the car but didn't devote any thought
to it then. As you began to anticipate your trip, this
significant detail of information became represented in a
dream. Thus you became actively aware of information you were
already aware of inactively.

In another illustration, you see one of your coworkers at your
desk one morning. You do not notice anything awry. You speak
with your coworker briefly, and accomplish the tasks of the
morning. That night, however, you have a vivid dream that your
coworker is in a fight with his lover. The following day, you
tell your coworker of the dream and express concern for their
relationship. Much to your surprise, you learn that your dream
identified your coworker's situation precisely. Are you
psychic? Maybe, but an equally plausible explanation is that
you perceived something wrong the previous morning. During
that brief encounter, you may have recognized emotional stress
and even succeeded in identifying the source. But while you
absorbed this information, at the time you were concerned only
with whatever work detail brought you together. The
information you held unconsciously made the transit from
inactive to active awareness through a dream.

In yet another example, you meet someone only casually at a
party. Later you dream of being romantically involved with
that person. The dreams takes you by surprise. You think, "I
met this person only once, and I never even thought about him
(or her) again." But apparently that's not true. When you
think it over, you admit that you did find the person
attractive.

Or maybe an old friend comes to town, and you spend a night out
on the town together. You have dinner and some drinks, and
later visit a nightclub. The following week you dream your
friend is arrested for driving while intoxicated. You make
some casual inquiries and find out that your friend actually
has been having problems with alcohol. You didn't notice it
the night you went out, but maybe at the time you were giving
your friend the benefit of the doubt.

While the idea of unconscious awareness appears paradoxical at
first, as you become more familiar with dreams, you will be
more comfortable with the concept. You'll find that dreams are
frequent conveyers of information between our conscious and
unconscious awarenesses. This is the primary reason why,
throughout time, dreams have been considered valuable
psychologically: They reveal our unconscious awarenesses.

Do dreams really show us things we do not already know? The
answer is twofold. Dreams show us that there are two stores of
knowledge within our mind. Consciousness contains everything
we are actively aware of, while the unconscious--and this is
the tricky part--contains everything else we are also aware of.
The mystery is how we can maintain unconscious awarenesses
without being aware of this knowledge at the conscious level.
At this point, however, we should be able to overcome our
conscious bias enough to recognize that unconscious awarenesses
are as valid as are conscious ones.

Dreams do not show us things we do not know. In fact,
precisely the opposite is true. Indeed, the revelatory
capacity of dreams attests to the fact that at some level in
our beings, we must already know whatever it is that our dreams
are reflecting. Accordingly, the real question to ask of dream
experience is whether we are aware yet, on the conscious level,
of the knowledge that dreams make manifest.

For example, in the dream of the unfaithful lover and the
sinking ship, if we examine the sequence of events, at some
point we much acknowledge that prior to the dream, our dreamer
was already aware that her lover was being unfaithful. This
awareness is what gives rise to the construction of the
foreboding dream. The distinction in this case is whether she
allowed this awareness to become conscious--whether she allowed
herself to feel this unconsciously possessed awareness. In the
above circumstance, we said that our dreamer did not allow
herself to become actively aware of this suspicion (prior to
her dream) because, quite simply, she did not want to become
aware of it. Even though she was aware of the infidelity at an
unconscious level, she avoided acknowledging or addressing this
gut feeling, sixth sense, intuition, or nervousness--or however
else this awareness manifested itself during waking experience.
To have acknowledged her suspicions would have been painful, so
she resisted its becoming part of her active awareness. In
simpler terms, she saw what she wanted to see and she did not
see consciously what she did not want to see. Yet as her dream
shows, her unconscious awareness of the infidelity persisted.

The search for the conscious center continues next issue with
the work of Gurdjieff.

Alfred Adler & Dream Styles

Richard Wilkerson

=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

"The whole personality is expressed by night and by day. "
A. Adler , 1929, pg 171

If we can characterize desire in Freud as erotically oriented,
and desire in Jung as wholeness oriented, then we can say in
Adler that desire is oriented to overcoming early feelings of
inferiority. These feelings stem from the beginning of life,
dependent and small, and evolve as we find ways of overcoming
these feelings of inferiority and becoming productive.

This strivings follow us right into the night; "Now just as
our waking life, we have seen, is determined by the goal of
superiority, so we may see that dreams are determined by the
individual goal of superiority." (Adler, 1929, p.155)

For Adler, the dream tries to help us overcome the same
feelings of inferiority we feel in our life, but without the
restraint of concrete reality. Thus the dream is not only a
experimental laboratory to safely try out new possibilities,
but also a window on the style we use in general.

To interpret the dream is to interpret the style of the
dreamer.

"We should remember that the selection of pictures,
remembrances and fancies is an indication of the direction in
which the mind is moving. It show you the dreams's tendency,
and eventually we can see the goal at which he wants to
arrive." (1929, p. 163)

The unique *life style* of the dreamer becomes the unifying
image around which the dream models itself. Adler points to a
repetitive dream for evidence:

"Why do we have the same dream repeatedly? This is a curious
fact for which no definite explanation can be given. However,
in such repeated dreams we are able to find the style of life
expressed with much more clarity. Such a repeated dream gives
us a definite and unmistakable indication where the individual
goal of superiority lies." (Adler, 1929, p. 169)

The golden rule in Adler's Individual Psychology is "Everything
can be different" (Ansbacher, 1957, p. 363) and so each
interpretation was to be unique. But there are trends that show
up.
Dreams of falling are seen by those who fear falling in life.
Dream about dead people indicate the dreamer has not finally
buried the dead and is still under the influence of the living.
Dreams of cruelty and making messes indicate rage and desire
for revenge. Short dreams indicate the dreamer is short-cutting
the path between their problems and their style of life. Long
dreams indicate the dreamer is good at finding long detours for
their problems.

For demonstration sake, try out this exercise meant to bring
out the "problem solving" aspect of dreaming:

EXERCISE: Take a dream and comment on it "as if" the dream were
indicating the way you want to solve your life problems.

a. Break the dream down into pieces and for each piece
summarize the action. You may wish to further give a functional
generalization to each part as we did before, like saying that
the refrigerator is keeping things cool, the table is for
setting things on, the road is for traveling down....

b. Say before each part, "I'd like to solve my social problems
by...[fill in the action]".

c. Notes: How realistic or not this solution would be? What
feelings come with this image?

Example: "In my dream there was a long hall and at the end an
open window."

Broken down using functional generalization:
Long Hall: a long way to go, feels like a long way, a lot of
time between here and there.
Open Window: opportunities, a way out, a fresh viewpoint,
escape.

Now try putting them in the formula:

"I'd like to solve my social problems by running down a long
hall and jumping out the window"
Hmmm, this rings a bell, but doesn't sound like a good
solution. So I try again:
"I'd like to solve my social problems by keeping them at a
distance until I see them from a new viewpoint." Now this
might be useful and something I could try.

Thus, for Adler, dreams come from unsolved social problems and
are oriented towards the resolution of those problems. Still,
the waking individual is needed to decide if those solutions
are simply a confirmation of fears or offer some new path. As
van de Castle notes (1994), Adler didn't really give much hope
for dreams offering very good solutions. Rather he felt the
benefit would be in connecting the dreamer to the feelings
around the general life style issues.

Exercise: Use the previous exercise, but instead of asking if
the dream realistically captures a solution, ask yourself if
the dream captures your general style or approach to problems
in general. Can you recognize this style? Is something you want
to continue to choose, or would you prefer to choice another
style?

Adler made a few mistakes in his assessment of dreams and the
modern Adlerians have tried to correct these views. For
example, Adler felt that the more psychologically healthy
individual would not dream. Now we feel that the amount of
dreaming is unrelated to psychopathology. But in general, the
idea that dreams produce feelings that can lead us to act upon
life and live better is continued. Also, that the inferiorities
we suffer in life are also seen in dreams and thereby create a
continuum between wake and sleep were these issues can be
experimented with, safely played with and changed in
cooperation with the waking self.

Madame Aionia's Astrological Dreaming Series:
Dreaming Through the Houses,
1. Third House Dreams - M. Aionia
2. Third House Dreams - Island
3. Some notes on 1st and 2nd House - Island

=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

Have you ever wondered how dreams and astrology are connected?

There are many ways we can connect dreams to astrology, and
many don't require that you know all about your Natal Chart. In
this column we will be exploring the symbolic rather than
predictive aspects of astrology. Symbolic astrology attempts to
use the images of astrological to give meaning to one's life
and empower choices rather than predict paths. We do this by
imaginal overlay. In this process we impleach, (poetically
interweave) dream, image, feeling, life and symbol in a way to
evoke a felt sense of the dream's imagery and its position in
our life.

This year we are focusing each month on a different House. The
inner circle of the Natal or Birth Chart is divided into 12
distinct regions know as Houses. They relate to everyday
activates. One will be about physical appearances and
temperament, while another relates to possessions, for example.
Planets and signs fall within these Houses and influence the
areas of focus. We will be watching for images of planets,
signs and other celestial events and hopefully begin to see the
emergence of an astrological chart that dips into birth charts,
dreams, and our waking life.

The Third House, connected with Gemini, is the sphere of
communication, education, the intellectual, of movement. It is
commonly seen as about communication, short trips, siblings,
neighbors and mental activities & qualities. Many see Gemini
and communication as the key to this house, which may be an
over-simplification, but a useful viewpoint. Thus in dreams we
may look at all kinds of communication, such as writing,
talking, telephoning, emailing, building web sites, online chat
rooms, lecturing, teaching, and signaling. Travel is an
extension of this connecting and may be found in walking,
driving a car, riding a bicycle or a bus, especially when
visiting or busing. Look for mental activities and work, like
reporting, writing and clerical work. Mental quality is also
part of this, how we develop, communicate, and find mental
subjects. The process is to perceive, analyze, differentiate
and move on. The style one favors in interpreting dreams will
also be seen as a 3rd house issue.

Focus on Third house dreams as well as the Third House in
parts of dreams can lead to a better understanding of one's
mental and communicative styles. This month we have a special
treat, as Island has provided us with some examples and
analysis.

Third House Dreams - Island

THE THIRD HOUSE: WHO AND WHAT INHABITS MY LOCAL ARENA? HOW DO
I GET (TRAVEL) AROUND? WHAT DID I LEARN EARLY ON? HOW DO I
CORRESPOND, COMMUNICATE? THE ABC'S OF LEARNING. WHO ARE MY
SIBLINGS TO ME?

*** Dream an extensive dream of riding in a cab.
*** Dreamed of nothing but cockroaches crawling out everywhere
I turn. [7.?.79]
*** Dream of a prose list that I am intensely
scrutinizing point by point. Someone close at hand scrutinizes
it with me. [4.25.80]
*** Dreamed of passing a French exam and having to take it
again. [12.7.80]
*** Dream of witnessing, or being involved in, an auto
accident on a mountain road. A woman who is to help me has a
lengthy, unpronounceable name. [81.06.15]
*** Dream my oldest brother visits me. He is disturbed and
stays longer than I want him to stay.
*** Dream of walking up to something similar to a ticket
booth, with someone beside me at the other window, and deciding
which classes I want to register for. [5.8.82]
*** I am taking a train ride to upper Manhattan and am with
two astrologers. I am having difficulty getting where I want
to go. I am told by one that my next job will be a medical
position. I don't like this at all. [6.26.82]
*** Vaguely recall dreaming of being pressured to write
newsprint or like a news reporter and glad that I do not.
[9.5.83]
*** Dream Sally, Laura, Barbara, and myself are together
discussing poetry in a very silly, frivolous way -- like
giggling school girls. [1.22.84]
*** Dream I am in a large room, resemblying a classroom, and
I'm trying to listen to one side of a tape, tying loose ends
together, etc. [84.02.04]

Comments by Island:

Because I feel, first, that I am a creature of change, yet
there is also a part of me that feels unchanged and
unchanging, I look at dreams and fragments from years ago as
much as I look at dreams I dream now. For some reason, it feels
good to do it that way because dreams I'm dreaming now
springboard me to the future and growing end, whereas dreams I
dreamed years ago, I'm probably just now catching up with
myself! From my third house fragments, I sense that I pay my
dues as I travel through life but others drive me, with a
further hint that I am fully aware that life is on loan (the
cab), to borrow from an old Anglo-Saxon phrase, "Lief is Lein
(pronouned Leef is lane -- the spelling is probably incorrect).
There is a strong suggestion of difficulty, even arduous work,
when it comes to learning -- certainly validating the sign of
Capricorn on the cusp of my third house. Though the house is
not tenanted by planets, it has fascinated me since Aquarius is
intercepted there and Pisces rudely rushes in for a degree or
two before the house door closes. So it's a little bit
complicated, especially since Saturn, the hard taskmaster,
occupying the ninth house, sits right at my tenth house door.
In my third house dreams, I labor over a list, and someone
watches me. Just about the worst possible thing I can imagine
happening because one of my parents was obsessive about
watching every little move and commenting negatively, often
with harsh judgement (cockroaches I can never seem to rid
myself of). I pass French -- interesting, because it is a
foreign language, which is more 9th house -- yet I have to take
the exam again. Much like life -- when I believe I've passed,
but I perceive that others believe I fail, so I have to do it
all over again, Sam! As I register for class, someone looks
over my shoulder. Here is the further suggestion that learning
takes place in narrow confinement (the booth) where I'm being
ticketed (graded) or ticket myself instead of evaluated with
heart set on evolving. Communication leans away from short,
succinct, news commentary style where all the facts are
presented, and feeling squashed. I like that. I feel that
contemporary society is a tremendous pressure shaping writing
style that will have far-ranging impact on the way we think,
feel, and assimilate. I did feel emotionally and spiritually
devastated mid-'81 and probably wouldn't even have been able to
pronounce my name...it was a huge mountain I climbed then but
probably would have been better off flying or climbing than
driving...couldn't even discern then if I was involved, or just
who? I'm so confused it takes two astrologers, not one, to
point me in any direction, and I do end up under medical
scrutiny just three years up the road. My brother does pay a
surprise visit in 1990 and ends up living with me for months
when he was only to come for a few days. He is deeply
disturbed, which disturbs me. A profound period in my
life...strange that it was signaled by such a brief fragment of
a dream, years before the event. A couple of years after I
finish taking all classes I would take in poetry, I am with my
professor and two students, giggling like silly schoolgirls. My
dreaming mind is telling me that I've shaped this ninth house
experience into a third house frame. So as poetry is
diminished, on the horizon looms another classroom, and in
fact, that is what happened. By the late eighties until
present, my professional work is to listen to tapes and tie up
loose ends.

Some notes on previous Houses covered, by Island.

THE FIRST HOUSE: I AM...WHO AM I?

*** Dream of scratching my head which is filled with dandruff.
[12.8.80]
*** Dream my eyelashes fall out of both eyes, leaving only
three remaining. Expecting to get together with a man, I am
horrified that I have no lashes. [1.17.81]
*** Dreamed I tell someone that my rising sign is primarily
Sagittarius. [10.13.81]
*** Dream of a refrigerator covered with ice. [4.28.82]
*** Dream I am struggling hard to make out the impression,
physical, etc., of Nietzche in a dream. [9.23.83]
*** Dream, like magic, I run a solution through my hair, and
it is beautifully frosted with white tones. [2.28.84]
*** Dream of a lineup, at night, of faces of women in a group
[6.18.84]
*** Dream of seeing my breasts. They are hideous, like
wieners with the skin folded around them to look like buns,
both shocking and embarrassing me. Someone reshapes them so
they conform to the natural contour of a woman's breasts.
[11.9.84]
*** Dream I am wearing a full skirt with petticoats underneath
and feel very uncomfortable, for a man is watching me closely.
*** Dream I see several majorettes from above coming out of a
tunnel, or enclave of sorts, with the and behind them at a
distance. These majorettes are fat and ugly. [12.2.84]
*** Dream a hand paints a purple line in the middle of each
eye (shadow), and I observe it in a mirror. [6.15.81]
*** Dreamed of going several places nude, feeling
uncomfortable being nude, and realizing I've been doing a lot
of that lately. [10.17.81]

THE SECOND HOUSE: I OWN/POSSESS/HAVE...WHAT OR WHO? WHAT IS MY
HERITAGE? WHO ARE MY ANCESTORS?

*** Dream searching for specific snakes to find them and put
them back in my purse where they belong. [12.6.80]
*** Dreamed Aunt Hester is debating on which new auto to buy.
[11.13.81]
*** Dreamed I'm given an all white, long-haired puppy dog who
has the personality of a human. [Jan/Feb '82]
*** Dream something about my aunt liking a particular dress
and spending a large sum of moeny to have several copies made
of it. As it turns out, it is money ill spent. [11.23.83]

ASD celebrates the many benefits of dreamwork, yet recognizes
that there are potential risks. ASD supports an approach to
dreamwork and dream sharing that respects the dreamer's dignity
and integrity; and which recognizes the dreamer as the
decision-maker regarding the significance of the dream. Systems
of dreamwork that assign authority over, or knowledge of the
dream's meanings to someone who is not the dreamer can be
misleading, incorrect and harmful. Ethical dreamwork helps the
dreamer work with his/her own dream images, feelings,
associations, etc., and guides the dreamer to more fully
experience, appreciate and understand the dream. Every dream
may have multiple meanings, and different
techniques may be reasonably employed to touch these multiple
layers of significance.

A dreamer's decision to share or discontinue sharing a dream
should always be respected and honored. The dreamer should be
forewarned that unexpected issues or emotions may arise in the
course of dreamwork. Information and mutual agreement about the
degree of privacy and confidentiality are essential ingredients
in creating a safe atmosphere for dream sharing.
Dreamwork outside of a clinical setting is not a substitute for
psychotherapy, or other professional treatment, and should not
be used as such. ASD recognizes and respects that there are
many valid and time-honored dreamwork traditions. We invite and
welcome the participation of dreamers from all cultures. There
are social, cultural and

transpersonal aspects to dream
experience. In this statement we do not mean to imply that the
only valid approach to dreamwork focuses on the dreamer's
personal life. Our purpose is to honor and respect the person
of the dreamer as well as the dream itself, regardless of how
the relationship between the two may be understood.

== Book Review: The Dream Messenger
by Patricia Garfield
Simon & Schuster, 1997
ISBN 0-684-81359-9
Patricia Garfield's sixth book, The Dream Messenger (How Dreams
of the Departed Bring Healing Gifts), continues her exploration
of how dreams can function as tools for healing in our waking
lives. The Dream Messenger focuses upon dreams of the
departed--identifying components of such dream encounters, and
providing techniques for integrating these dreams of
bereavement to reawaken to life after the loss of a loved one.
Based on a study of hundreds of dreams of personal loss, as
well as her own journals and the writings of other contemporary
authors, Garfield brings a rich sense of shared emotion and
human experience to the grieving process, and to the need to
affirm our continuing relationships with those who have died.

==Dreamwork as a Catalyst for Poetry
A week of dreamwork and writing at Ghost Ranch Conference
Center, Abiquiu, New Mexico will be held July 7-14, 1997,
facilitated by Gail Ellison and Marjorie Ryerson. Because
dreams and poems share similar origins and characteristics,
dreamwork can be an effective catalyst for writing poetry. The
feelings and images flow from one form to the other, with
consciousness as the bridge. In this workshop, we will
re-enter our dreams, looking for our personal stories and
rekindling the feelings we had during the night, then allow
those seeds to unfold in our writing. Over the course of the
week, we will work to come into closer touch with our inner
life, and to hone the creative writing that emerges.
Non-dream-recallers are invited to come and learn ways to
remember, and
to access inner material. Novice poets who don't know where to
begin, or who think they have nothing to say, will be led to
appreciate the richness of their inner experience. Experienced
poets will have an opportunity to intensify their writing, and
to share and receive feedback about their work. Designed to be
both fun and meaningful, the course incorporates dream theater,
movement, and artwork.

Gail Ellison, PhD is a writer and dreamworker whose doctorate
is in Oneirology, the study of dreams, and Narrative
Psychology, the finding of our stories. Previous workshops
include "Understanding Our House Dreams" (Association for the
Study of Dreams Conference), "Women's Dreams in Midlife" (Wise
Ones Conference), and "Dreamwork for Caregivers" (Arts in
Medicine Symposium). Marjorie Ryerson, MFA is a poet,
photographer, and journalist. Associate professor at Castleton
College in Vermont; teaches poetry writing at the New England
Young Writer's Conference at Middlebury College. MFA in
Creative Writing from the University of Iowa. Ryerson's poetry
is widely published; her readings draw enthusiastic crowds.

== Personal and Practical Approaches to Your Dreams
Virginia Beach, VA April 24-27, 1997
A conference jointly sponsored by the Association for Research
and Enlightenment; the Association for the Study of Dreams (a
non-profit, international, multi disciplinary organization
dedicated to the pure and applied investigation of dreams and
dreaming); and the C.G. Jung Society of Tidewater (a
southeastern Virginia network of professional and lay
individuals actively studying and applying
the work of C.G. Jung). Since the dawn of civilization, dreams
have been a highly valued means of receiving guidance, but in
recent centuries dreams have been devalued and
discounted. Now they are reemerging as personal, practical
tools for self-understanding and direction. How will we as a
culture, who have only in the past century begun to
reclaim our dreams, move into the future using dreamwork and
dream-play for wholeness, soul growth, and healing? This
conference is a chance for a meeting of professionals and lay
people who are actively engaged in dream exploration. The
emphasis will be on useful methods of
working with dreams- methods found in the spiritual
psychologies of Edgar Cayce, Carl Jung, and other pioneers of
inner life exploration. Bring some of your own
dreams, and be ready to experience novel approaches to
encounter the meaning of your dreams. You ll have many chances
to work on them, including breakfast dream discussion groups
each day. Morning and evening presentations feature several
leading practitioners and authors of innovative dream methods.
Our keynote speaker, opening the conference, is Robert Bosnak,
author of the acclaimed book A Little Course in Dreams. The
program also includes a choice of afternoon workshops on a wide
range of topics:

Connecting with Spirit Through Dream with Carol D. Warner and
Rita Dwyer, will combine meditation, journaling, and creative
writing to experience techniques for connecting with spiritual
guidance and wisdom in dreams.
Ali Baba s Untold Dreams with Stase Michaels will make use of
an easy-to-learn five step method and twenty seven fundamental
dream types, serving as keys or open sesames to the meaning of
your dreams. Stase is author of The Bedside
Guide to Dreams, teaches psychology at Hampton University, and
is involved with research work at the College of William and
Mary.

Alchemical Images in Dreams with Raye Mathis will explore
Jung's thesis that the symbolic system of alchemy was largely
a product of the unconscious psyche. The workshop will explore
four of the alchemical processes, their correlation to
astrology, and how to recognize those processes in our dreams.
Raye has done
post-graduate study at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, where
she studied astrology with Jung s daughter. Raye is a faculty
member or Atlantic University.

The Inner Oracle with Kevin Todeschi will lead participants
through a waking dream using dream symbolism to discover
personal insights. Kevin is the author of The Encyclopedia of
Symbolism, a staff member of ARE and teaches dream
interpretation at the Reilly School of Massotherapy.
Dreaming in the Service of Healing and Wholeness with David
Gordon, Ph.D. will explore the power of group dreamwork,
drawing upon the Jungian perspective of dreams along with the
group dream work suggestions of Jeremy Taylor. The
benefits of the Dream Incubation Method are highlighted. David
has been a clinical psychologist for twenty-three years and is
the founder of the Dream Study Institute of Ghent (in Norfolk,
VA). He is a member of ASD and a board member of the C.G. Jung
Society of Tidewater.

D R E A M S SECTION EDITORIAL BY BOB K. (For ED V4N3)

Hi there! Welcome to ELECTRIC DREAMS - DREAMS SECTION for
Vol. 4 Number 3.

Highlights from this issues dreams: Slipping and floating - a
stumper decoder presents a stumper. A Bed & Breakfast like a
Nursing Home that's the setting for a Wedding that's Death. An
old house, tea time, Dimensional Portals, Vapor-like beings,
Direct computer to mind thought transfers, and Extraterrestrial
visitors in search of ...(read it to find out!) are all
features of The Alien Threat from Stan.

New Categories: ALIENS, STAIRS, WATER

Thanks: As always thanks to the many dream contributors who
generously share their dreams and the commentators who share
their dream wisdom. This month I wish to specially welcome an
active group of contributors from Ryerson Polytechnic
University/ Hospitality & Tourism Management students in
Canada. Dreams do have an element of travel and tourism to
them, now if we could only find a way to ensure the best of
hospitality standards within!!

A couple dreams refer to Dream Dictionaries. Long time dream
students know that the best "Dream Dictionary" is the one you
write for yourself. An interesting observation is that as our
lives evolve and develop, so will our own dream symbol meanings
- it is very dynamic rather than static and written in
concrete. The Dream Dictionaries out there range from the "off
the wall" to the suggestive of universal meanings, with the
later far more valuable. Personally, I find their main
usefulness in identifying categories, objects and concepts
rather than in the providing of meanings. The associations
help us extend the world of possible interactions. A reference
to Zolar's meanings for Soup dreams is an interesting
illustration in relatively arbitrary assignments to symbolism
of soups. On a worldwide basis, the meanings are useless and
irrelevant to many world cultures. The question to ask is what
do soups mean to you? What associations do you have to
specific soups? The lesson here is don't blindly accept
meanings identified in printed media by supposed experts or
folklore into your reality. Folklore and tradition have a knack
for touching cores of truthfulness, but they may or may not
adapt to your particular life or life situation. Have you found
any Dream Dictionaries useful? Let me know and I'll publish
your observations in a future edition of ED. I personally find
the unabridged versions of Websters, Random House, and American
Heritage as well as versions of Rogets Thesaurus the most
useful of all. What? Why? There is a high degree of relatedness
between Dream and Waking realities.

Wherever you are, thanks for reading, and come on join in the
fun. Send us a dream or commentary.

FEEDBACK FROM THE DREAMERS

# Dream Comments: Dreams that Monitor Dreaming by Brien(970321)
#

As much as we give credence to the internal...the dream world,
and suggest that it is a reflection of some *missed*
opportunity in our waking world, how much thought do we give to
the idea that a dream may suggest we may have spent to much
time on the internal meaning and have missed *the
opportunity*...for it exists only in our waking moments?

COMMENTARY ON DREAMS FROM PREVIOUS ISSUES

= Commentary by Bob C. on Spiderman's Enemy KingPin (970222) =

Re: Spiderman's enemy King Pin -from ann.

> >I dreamt this nightmare for the first time when I was twelve
years old. It seemed then, as it does now to be disconnected
from my waking life. I have dreamt the following nightmare
about 5 or 6 times, sometimes missing 5 years at a time.

>Thankfully, I do not wake up in a cold sweat with my heart
pounding. I simply wake up with the alarm and realize: "I
dreamt that dream again." Here it is:

> >Bad Guy: Spiderman's enemy King Pin (fat, bald and mean).
> >Weapon: Boomerang
> >Participants: about 20 faceless adults (male & female)
> >Setting: We are in a cottage, locked in one room. The room
has large windows. The day is sunny and the
view is
of the middle section of pine trees. (The cottage
must be elevated.)
> >Events: The King Pin opens the locked door and throws the
boomerang. The extremely sharp boomerang flies
about
the room for an interminably long time until it
chooses its victim and cuts their head off. (Nice
eh?!)

> >This is my dream. It repeats again and again. There is no
ending. Comments: I never die. (Thank God!) The strongest
sensation I experience is the WAITING/ANXIETY/SUSPENSE while
the boomerang/King Pin chooses its victim. The only hint of
recognition is the setting, as I have an aunt with a cottage
that overlooks the middle section of pine trees. I read the
comic "Spiderman" as a child and teenager, but never was
addicted to it (i.e., never purchased a comic book). I dream in
colour.

>Comments are welcome as I am curious to what others may think.
Thanks! p.s. hope this gets to someone as I'm a bit new at
this.

==========================================

This appears to be a dream concerning fear of success and
control issues. Spiderman can climb webs. That is, he has the
power of mobility through "connections," but the people in the
cottage are faceless. There is no way to know who they are or
how they are related (connected) to each other. Is the dreamer
also faceless? Is being faceless her protection. Would the
dreamer be singled out if she were to stand out. If she spoke
out would her words and ideas "boomerang" on her. The dreamer
appears to be powerless in her dream to avoid the boomerang.
All personal power to act seems to be absent in the environment
of dread. Possibly, the fact that her Aunt's home reminds the
dreamer of the dream locale is an indication that at some time
in the past she felt put down or humiliated after speaking out
at a family gathering. Since Kingpin is male, and the term
kingpin can denote the top man in an organization, possibly the
symbol of Kingpin refers to a father figure in the dreamer's
childhood. If the dreamer disagrees with the above
interpretation it is wrong. Only the dreamer knows.

NEW DREAMS:

PRECOGNITIVE/FUTURE DREAMS [Stories from past experiences, or
send them in before it happens, if you can]

* Dreams: Just A Dream !!!??? by Maged (970326) *

I have a friend at work that tells me about her dreams. Last
time I talked to here, I kind of got confused. Our boss at
work is really sick at the moment, his doctor said he is
probably not going to make it to the end of the week, which is
really tragic, because he was the best manager I have ever
had. He is so nice and considerate,(but this is life). He went
to the hospital a while ago, but he got better and returned
home, and was suppose to return to work in a week.
Unfortunately he got worse and was taken to the hospital again,
but this time there is no hope. So my friend at work said that
she dreamt of him the first time, right before he went to the
hospital, she doesn't remember what the dream was, but she
said it was not good. After he got out of the hospital the
first time, and was expected to return to work; She dreamt of
him again. In this dream, he came to work and she was very
happy to see him, when she asked him if he is back to work
already? He said no, he is just picking up something and
leaving soon. The next day he was taken to the hospital in a
really bad condition.

Another incident with my dreaming friend also involves another
co-worker. That person had a cat, and it was not feeling very
well. When my friend dreamt of seeing that co-worker and her
cat in a dream. The cat died the next day. I am not
superstitious at all, but I am open minded. Does any body have
an explanation to this? Or is it just a coincidence that needs
no explanation.

REPETITIVE DREAMS [Significant by nature]

# Dream Question: "Dream Reoccurrence?" by Anne-marie (970318)

Why do dreams often reoccur throughout your lifetime? I often
find that most of my dreams are fragments of previous dreams.

= Commentary by Annalisa on Fragments by Anne-Marie (970320) =

I often find that most of my dreams are fragments of previous
dreams. Anne-Marie > > > > > > >

To help answer your question, the "dreams fragments" come from
past issues from your life. Reoccurring dreams, on the other
hand, are from issues that have not been resolved. To resolve
them, one must interpret the dream and try to make sense of it.
If the dream does not reoccur, then you have successfully
interpreted your dream. If you find that it comes back, you
should try again.

I hope this helps, Annalisa

= Commentary by Coffee&Tea on Fragments (970321) =

I agree that "dream fragments" come from past issues from our
lives. I also agree that when a dream reoccurs is due to an
unsolved issues in the past. But I only think that it is just
past of the reason, a dream reoccurrence can also be due to
remembrance of a dream. The Dream is stored in the brain and
the brain retrieves the dream, just like a computer retrieves
a file from the hard drive.

I AGREE TO BOTH OF YOU. I THINK IF THE STORY IN THE DREAM IS
NOT IMPORTANT/REGARD TO YOU OR THE PERSON YOU CARE, YOU WON'T
EVEN REMEMBER THAT YOU HAD A DREAM.

* Dream: "Scary Dreams" by Thuy (970305) *

I have had this recurring dream for a while:

I dream that my soul is out of my body. My body is buried and
all the maggots and bugs are eating my body and I can't do
nothing. I feel scared and helpless. I'm really afraid to
died what will become of me. I won't exist anymore. Every
time I have this dream, out wake up in a could sweat and it's
hard for me to fall asleep again.

= Commentary by Bob K. on "Scary Dreams" by Thuy (970305) =

Dear Thuy:

Thanks for sharing your recurring scary dream. You
don't say anything about your age or physical condition or if
you are male or female so my comments are very general. The
dream is a scary one even for me reading it.

In the Bhagavad Gita there is a passage which states
something like this: There never was a time when you and I and
them (the others preparing for battle) did not exist, nor shall
there be a future where we will cease to be. Nothing has the
power to change the changeless. The truly wise know
this.

We certainly identify with our bodies during our
earthly existence, and it seems to be all there is for many.
In your dream, even though a part of you observes the
deterioration of your body, you are so identified with the body
that you emphasize the horror and don't realize you are more
than your body - perhaps looking for another body or vehicle
for your life force.

If you simply don't believe in anything but the
physical, the dream is telling you to change something about
your present conditions. If you do not it is likely that life
as you live it or know it will come to an end. Usually death in
our dreams has to do with the ending of relationships, ideas or
"ways of life."

It could be moving away from your neighborhood or
family, it could be going to a hospital for treatment, it could
be going to school for a new life, it could mean a big change
is imminent in your life or at least an inner part of you
thinks so. It could be you are mixed up with some "deadly"
friends or relationships.

If you have not had a medical check up, it might be a
good idea to do so to make sure that you are not suffering from
some disease which is "eating away" at you from inside. The
sooner it is caught, if it does exist, the sooner you can cure
or treat it. If it turns out there is no medical condition,
the dream is clearly about your lifestyle and ideas.

I hope this helps - and your dreams continue making you
aware of important issues needing attention. You may not think
so, but you are very fortunate to be able to listen to the
voice within you.

Bob Krumhansl

= Commentary by Sandra on "Scary Dream"(970310) =

I think that you should not be afraid of death, because it's
inevitable. Embrace the karmic belief that you will come back
once you die. The body is just a shell, and since your soul
is free, to me that's what's important. Don't be afraid that
you won't "exist"...it's what you make of your life and the
friends and memories you create with them.

= Commentary by Heratheta on Scary Dream (970307) =

thank you bobkrum for talking about soul and dream body
differences. this is the fundamental flaw in so called lucid
dreaming. I do believe there is a lucidness but that it is the
soul or as the taoists say a stillness that moves. it is not
the dream body of the dreamer as mentioned in the book Chuang
Tzu chapter two. too often lucidity movement people are
speaking of the transformation as the soul body rather than the
spirit body or thinner physical body. there is a difference in
quality and quantity per human.

* Dream: "The Bridge" by Eileen (970310)

When I was a little kid, I used to have a recurring dream and
I would wake up with my heart beating so fast. In this dream,
I would be walking across a small bridge alone. The atmosphere
was dark, foggy and gloomy. Each time I dreamt this, I would
never be able to reach the other side of the bridge. I always
woke up when I would look at the ground from the bridge. This
was probably about 12 years ago, and to this day I still
don't know what it meant.

= Commentary by Kwok on Bridge by Eileen (970311) =

You might have some troubles or sad things happen around that
age. What I would do is that if I have that kind of dream, I
will try to think of those happen things, and usually it would
make me feel better.

= Commentary by Kwok on "The Bridge" by Eileen (970312) =

You might have some troubles or sad things happened in that
age. Or may be you want to finish a task by yourself, and
there were a lot of restraints that avoid you to finish it.

= Commentary by Cathy on "The Bridge" by Eileen (970310) =

I think Eileen's bridge dream is a very natural dream
about the fear of growing up and being on our own. Life is
a journey across a bridge and as you grow up you have to
walk alone. Also the dark gloom and fog could represent
those grown up responsibilities like work, confronting the
loss of beloved family members, etc. The looking to the
ground is the fear of failure, of falling off the bridge,
not being able to make the transition to adulthood and
independence--perhaps even a fear of falling into some
kind of co-dependent or dependent trap like
addiction/paranoia.

Cathy

= Commentary by Osaka on Bridge by Eileen (970311) =

I think, you are probably afraid of facing something. what
kind of things are you hiding in your closet. look deep inside
yourself the answer is there, may the force be with you.

DREAM TRACES IN WAKING LIFE [The effects of external stimuli on
our dreams or is it the other way around - our dreams leaving
a trace on our physical reality?]

DEFYING CLASSIFICATION [Your stumpers may not be so mysterious
to others]

* Dream: "watt is fear?" by Brien (970307) *

Although I have been with this list from almost the start three
years ago... I have never posted a dream. I felt compelled to
get the input of this diverse group of people because I have no
idea were to start with this dream.

_________begin dream__________

It is daylight and I am walking with a woman to a blue car,
her's..mine...I do not know. But I have my red electric guitar
strapped on kinda striking the strings and I slip on the dry
paved road (dreams are like that:). I slip feet first and begin
the fall sorta backwards, but I find myself kinda slipping into
this fall, enjoying the fluid motion of it. The fall takes me
under the car...but I never touch the road or the car during
this
transition...it was kind of fun to do!

The next frame I am in bed (were I really was) but I was not
asleep. There is something floating over my head, just within
reach, a pair of shorts, a towel, a rag, a pair of underwear,
I can not tell but these are the questions I asked myself. But
I reach up to grab *it*. I am lifted from the bed, still in the
prone position and on my back. This object floats me towards
the door or maybe more directly...to the light switch. I wake
up feeling very startled and slightly fearful.

___________end of dream___________

All during the process of writing this dream down in the dark,
I had the Eagles song from Hotel California, Try and love
again, banging in my head. It creates a very strong feeling in
me. With this thought and the accent of this dream in my mind
I am embarrassed to say I could not go back to sleep...nor did
I try, but got back to work on a current web project.

I look forward to the intelligent thoughts in your collective
minds,

Brien

LINKS TO STAGES OF LIFE

BIRTH [Starts]

CHILDHOOD [Early development]

* Dream: Water Dream by Anne-Marie (970312) *

Thank you for the analysis of my first dream, so here is
another that maybe you could help me with...

I have had this dream numerous times since childhood and
still have yet to completely understand it.

The dream takes place in the front yard of the house that I
grew up in which, while I am playing with my friends outside,
the front lawn suddenly fills up with water and I am in a raft
and I begin to float away. I am floating through my
subdivision when the houses begin to disappear and there are
these huge cliffs covered in moss and seaweed and the water
begins to get choppier. When I look up at the cliffs I see my
sister and other people in my neighborhood yelling to me and I
reach out to grab them but I can't quite reach. I float out
into the middle of a large river and there is eventually no
sign of land. This is usually the point at which the dream
ends.

= Commentary by Anne-Marie on Water Dream Response (970318) =

I would like to thank everyone who responded to my water
dream. It is very interesting to hear different theories to
what it is that my dream actually means. I still have a
feeling that there is a little more to it, but I can't quite
put my finger on it. Perhaps by reading others dreams it can
help me to analyze what is going on. Thank you, Anne-Marie

= Commentary by KwoK on Anne-Maries Water Dream (970317) =

I think the first part of your dream is representing your
current situation. You are very happy, and you enjoy every
moment with your friends and family. However, for the second
part of your dream, I think it is something about the future.
You may afraid that one day you may need to leave your family
and friends. It may because you need to go to other countries
to work etc.

* Dream: "Waiting For The Bus..." by Sandra (970310) *

I was about four or five and I dreamt that a beautiful
double-decker multicoloured bus loaded with people floated up
to my bed and was waiting for me. I got up and tried to climb
unto it but it was so light and airy that I couldn't. That's
when I woke up and my parents were standing beside me next to
the bathroom. I remember being upset because I wanted to be on
that bus.

I think the bus load of people symbolizes your family. You
probably have a big family and you probably feel left out.
Maybe it's because you are last in the family line. But don't
give up the bus has to stop some time for you to climb in.

= Commentary by Cathy on Multicolored Bus by Sandra (970311) =

This little dream about the bus seems to be a beautiful
dream of the afterlife--a joyous journey to parts unknown.
You could get the bus because you aren't ready to die,

* Dream: "The Living Room and Coffee Cup" by Kwok (970310) *

When I was a little child and I dreamt that I was in a large
living room and I went into there and looked around. I found
no one was there. Thus, I was so tired that I slept on a big
sofa which was located in the middle of the living room. I
didn't know how long I was slept. Then I was awoken by the
smell of coffee, when I opened my eyes, I saw someone stood in
front of me and hand me the coffee. Well, I tried to look who
he/she was but before I did that he/she just throw the coffee
cup to me,
at that moment I woke.

A childs dream may be easier to deal with then a *grown up*
dream might be. They certainly have many new experiences in
front of them! As long as archetypal symbols are not part of
this said dream, my experience only, suggests that more often
then not, the root of the dream is easier to capture as it
might pertain specifically to the child. If compression is to
be considered an everyday occurrence for the adult dream then
it is minimized in a childs night life...not completely
unavailable, but the effect is lessened. I can not accept that
any of us are 'new' to the world...not after coming to and
seeing the existence of the collective unconscious that Dr.
Carl G. Jung postulated. We are, in effect, a new person with
the history of the world available in thought, or known, *and*
unavailable, sort of akin to Christopher Bollas' unthought
known...we have it, we may not think about it, but we possess
the ability to capture this idea, what ever it may be.

OLD AGE [Wisdom, Approaching the Journeys end]

* Dream: "The Wise Old Man Visit" by LindaHunt (970317) *

Hi, Bob. This is a dream I had a while back but I cannot get
it out of my mind. Please use an alias. Thanks.

This dream took place at my house located in the country. I
stood at my kitchen window looking out and saw an old man with
long white hair walking up my the dirt road to my house. He
had a knapsack over one shoulder and a walking stick. He
looked like a Buddha type of wise man. As he walked up to my
house, I went outside and greeted him. I asked him to come in
but he said no. I asked him if he wanted a drink of water and
he said yes. I
brought the water. He sat on the front porch drinking it and
I went back inside.

I was worried what my husband would think when he came home, if
the wise man was still there. My husband, Steve, came home and
the two men were instant friends. Steve invited the wise man
inside and asked him if he wanted to clean up. The

wise man
took a shower and changed into some of Steve's old clothes. We
decided to go somewhere (I don't know where) and I wanted to
change clothes also. I put on a suede dress but I kept
forgetting to put on my under pants. I would go back into my
room and open the chest of drawers but when I came out, I had
forgotten again. This happened several times and then it was
time to leave. Steve had changed into some jeans that were too
tight, but he looked good. Then we all went somewhere in
Steve's truck. I sat in the middle. It was as if we were all
one and had the same destination, but I did not know what it
was. I woke up feeling as if the wise man was pointing the
way.

Thanks for any help.
Sincerely,
"May the path be smooth beneath your feet,
May the winds be soft and the waters sweet;
May you find all along the way
A dream to brighten every day."

DEATH [Endings]

* Dream: "Death" by WiseCrone (970325) *

Sorry, but I have been very busy. I want to keep up with you,
but so far I have had to be vigilant. My father died recently,
and lately the mother of a dear friend. This brought me an
interesting dream which I want to share with you.

DEATH

I am in a large bed and breakfast place which used to be a
nursing home. The owner of the place has rigid rules and
regulations for the guests. When she steps out for a minute
everyone is free and some of them begin to dance and fly away.
When they fly away I understand the reasons why the matron is
so rigid and fearful. I think, "that's the reason for the rigid
rules. People might fly away and fly toward dangerous places."

Then the nursing home turned bed and breakfast is empty
and the owner, Roseanne Bar is showing me the beautifully
decorated rooms and the many beds and spaces that are
available. The place is terrific. I notice especially how the
new windows have been fitted over the previous openings. One
room is big enough for a family of six. It even has a potty of
the little ones. When Roseanne shows me this room, she is also
looking to go to the bathroom herself.

The front door is open and a couple wants to see the
place. I know the couple, the wife, C. has lost her mother very
recently. I lead them to the center of the house. Roseanne and
I show C. the wedding dress that I will wear before my
wedding/death. The dress is embroidered beautifully. I am
struck that it must have taken a lifetime to fashion and
embroider skillfully. My wedding is to precede my death. The
woman shakes hands with me gingerly because she knows I am
dying. She says, "I am afraid of evergreens." She points at
some evergreens that she sees through the open window. That's
when I notice that some of the embroidery on the dress is also
done in the same color green as the evergreens. Another man is
outside too. He and I joke together because of the way people
treat the dying-- The man says, "they come in and say a prayer
and leave quickly, they are afraid of cancer." I think," I
must take a shower before I put the wedding dress on. This will
be the last time that I wash this body before I leave it." Then
I start to write a letter to my parents. "You gave me life, and
now I you will watch me lose it." I am wondering if this is not
a bit like a suicide note. I wake up.

End of dream

any comments would be appreciated.

Hi, thank you for sharing your rich dream with us. May I also
offer my condolences on your losses.

Some portions of your dream touched me deeply. I hope these
reflections might be helpful.

One room
is big enough for a family of six.

The word cancer has six letters in it.

I do hope that I have not caused or created any concern that
should not be. It is a powerful dream and seems to be full of
your hope and understanding of living and dying.

This is not meant to be an interpretation...only thoughts from
another point of view. Brien

AGGRESSION [By us or against us- crossing others paths]

* Dream: Amish Tradition by Concerned (970326) *

My dream started out as if I was in a yearbook crew, and we
were looking through pictures. I saw a series of pictures of
a man (who I knew was Amish).

The first picture showed only his face, then next one a full
bust, the next his whole body. The picture after that showed
him leaning on an axe, which had been stuck into a tree stump.
The few pictures after that one showed another man in the
background (all of these pictures were sepia [brown and white,
not black and white], and the man was wearing logging clothes).
The last picture included both men, next to each other (I
remember the other man to be wearing a suit, but I think he
changed later on). The last picture also turned into a movie.

After that, the suited man took the axe, and started chopping
at the Amish man. He continued until the Amish man was all cut
up (except for his head). The other man then pushed the cut up
part into a hole in the ground, and made the head eat it. He
said it was an Amish tradition. I'm not sure if this magazine
analyzes dreams or not, but this one has got me worried.

ALIENS [Visitors or visited - creatures from other dimensions]

From: Stan Kulikowski ii
Subject: dream of aliens

(last evening I balanced my checkbook in quicken. sent out
some E-mail while watching a rerun of babylon5 with mom. went
to bed around 23:00, the usual time.)

* Dream: "the alien threat" by Stan Kulikowski ii (970317) *

I am almost alone in the famous old apartment that Sheila and
I never lived in. it is upstairs on the third floor of what
used to be a grand new England house which grew and expanded
over the generations, but is now about to fall apart. at
least, major portions of it are no longer liveable or safe to
enter, like the long kitchen area of our apartment which had to
be boarded off.

anyway, it is Thursday, the day of our usual gathering of
friends here. but it is still early in the afternoon, and I
have time for a quick trip in the dimension portal with my
friend before the people start showing up and I have to start
cooking for them.

very few friends know about the dimension portal, maybe six or
seven in all. some itinerant scientists started the project in
my workshop but never finished and one day I got it working.
the six of us took off for an adventure in another world on the
otherside from which we barely got back. there are probably
many other dimensions to connect with, at least theory says
there should be, but we are keeping the settings locked on the
first
one until we establish secure contact and exchange with the
beings on the otherside. besides, we are pretty sure that the
government and military will take an interest in the device
pretty soon when they hear of it through the grapevine. there
is always tremendous risk when cultures come into first
contact. we feel that as owners and inventors of a private
technology, we have rights to explore its possibilities first.

anyway, bill is here today and he is one of the half dozen who
have gone through the portal before. the two of us stand
before the machine. it looks like an old tube radio, about
chest high standing on the floor, rounded on the top with a
single indicator light in the middle and lots of dials and
meters and knobs. with a pause for reflection, I reach over
and give one of them a crank. with a whoosh, our bodies are
vaporized as we zone over to the otherside.

exactly what happens over there is difficult to say. we meet
somebody, or several somebodies, and exchange greetings. they
are as curious about us as we are about them. it seems that
they can give new mental powers, like the ability to moisten a
surface with your mind, since they are swirling masses of
gases. that is, they are non-embodied, just organized
collections of various vapors kept in functional order by the
flow of mental energies. so in our disembodied transport
through the portal, they can interact with us by temporarily
mixing their gaseous selves with our vaporized constitutions.
in this conjugation, they can make alterations in our patterns,
at least temporarily. but so far, they effects are temporary
and peculiar. like, who needs the power to moisten stamps with
your mind? a postman or a junk mail salesman perhaps. or the
power to talk with your armpit? or the ability to smell the
color yellow? so far all strange capacities go away after a
few hours or days.

whatever we do or how long we are over there is difficult to
judge. but the return trip is coming more reliable in finding
the getback point. since we have so little experience with the
otherside, we have difficulty remembering much of it. nothing
to associate with and having a body of vapor does not help keep
the perceptions straight. memories all seem to run and flow
together into a disorganized mass. like remembering a fragment
of something and a bit of that which seem to have no coherent
causal order. anyway, we expect that continued experience will
help this, so we have agreed to keep trying the portal but
waiting until the effects wear off and noting their kind and
duration.

on the return, once through the portal back to here, we can
remain in the invisible vapor state for some time before using
the machine to resubstantiate. there may be some utility in
just that for spies and clandestine spook operations. we can
see and hear but also glide through walls (which means we are
not really in gaseous state, but it feels like that). moving
through a less porous substance like glass is squeakier, but it
can be done with a little more effort. mirrors, for some
reason, may
be impenetrable. it ought be like glass to pass through, but
for some reason the reflection is a screaming horror that we
all avoid with strong aversion. even a shiny chrome object like
a vase or a polished spoon makes me queasy in passing near it.
but the curved nature of the distortion is at least smaller and
more self closing than the blank sucking terror of a flat
mirror.

on the return from this passage, I see that bill goes over to
a computer I have hooked up to the portal to monitor ionization
levels of corporeal transubstantiation. he sticks his face
through the outer casing so his forehead and then brain regions
occupy the same space as the hard disk drive. we had discussed
this as perhaps a method of interfacing with the computers
through direct thought transfer of data through the energies of
our vapor minds with the magnetic particles of the disk. but
we have no idea which way the data would flow-- either from us
to disk and record our impressions of the portal journeys
directly, or from the disk storage into our consciousness
directly. apparently, he has decided to try it out. he keeps
his forehead merged with the spinning disk drive for a moment
then pulls out, shaking his head back and forth in a slurry
motion. it seems to have been a mildly painful experience.
then bracing all his wisps together in as tight an array as we
can in this state, he plunges further into the guts of the
computer than before. I will be interested in what he has to
say about this experience when we get our bodies back.

I go over to the portal equipment and prepare to reincorporate,
but before I do, I sense the passing of one, maybe several,
otherworlders fleeing back across to their home. I believe I
had invited them to come try solidity on our side, but they
seemed to find that a distasteful and dangerous offer. they
imagine our life to be like a lump of clay, all immobile and
fixed. I try to explain to them that we are really more like
water or fire, as the sloshing of liquids is easier for them to
imagine capable to
contain a motive lifeform. my guess is that some of their
braver number accompanied us back through the gateway, but
after seeing the rigidity of our surfaces, they fled. I should
be careful not to accidentally trap any of them over here in
the future.

remogrification is not a totally pleasant sensation. something
like coming into gravity after a free fall. the lightness of
zero gee converted with an itching feeling as the molecules
begin locking into their more contained locations. but it is
a fast sweeping movement that does not last that long.

more people have arrived in the other rooms for the Thursday
afternoon tea. it is time that begin preparing the hors
d'oeuvres and munchies. some are just in the refrigerator and
I know several of my friends will have helped out by
distributing them already. many people bring more food along,
so the party atmosphere sort of progresses as people arrive in
the late
afternoon. usually some new people also show up with the
regulars.

just as I am meeting a young woman brought in by someone, I
hear a loud sawing noise from the front of the house. going
out to the front porch I see that some contractors have
attached a huge metal saw to the roof and its cold metal blade
is slowly moving up and down. ( I still get a slight shiver
from the sun reflecting off it). they are sawing off the little
balcony attached to the porch. it had been about fall off, so
it is good
they remove it before someone got hurt.

going back inside, I explain to the newcomer that this house is
a couple hundred years old, and needs constant repair. I show
her the former kitchen area which is now boarded up and slowly
separating from the rest of the building. too bad. that
kitchen stuck out from house and had marvelous glass windows on
all three sides surrounding the sink at the end. was a nice
sunny area to wash up the dishes in the morning. now it is
covered over with rusting red corrugated siding.

now I hear a different noise from outside. sort of a whirring
mechanical buzz from way over the roof. I run down the stairs
and into the yard to see what is up. above the house is a
flying saucer, turning in a slow, slightly uneven rotation.
actually it looks rather like two Hershey kisses fused together
in almost a round saucer shape. the whole thing is maybe 10 or
12 feet across, not large compared to the house. and it does
not
seem to operating very well, occasionally the rotation seems to
stick with a jerk and a rasping sound. finally the thing gives
out a large wheeze and drops onto the roof with a clang. not
an impressive landing at all.

I run back upstairs, and as host, the others make way for me to
get to the french doors which open onto the roof area. no one
ever knows who will show up for Thursday afternoon tea, but
this is a first. now we got extraterrestrials. still, I hear
someone say it was only a matter of time before something like
this happens at Stan's house.

the aliens are short humanoids with very greasy looking olive
colored skin. a brownish yellow with a hint of green, about
the saturation of a slightly bleached olive at least. the
three of them have curious little tufts of hair on a pointy
cranium, and very full, thick bristled mustaches hiding
whatever they have for mouths between drooping cheeks.

"greetings, we have come for supplies which we need very
muchly," one of them says. his English is not too bad.

"and what supplies do you need?" I ask, trying to be helpful.

"cows and water" they reply in unison. "cows and water."

I ask them how many cows and how much water, suddenly concerned
by their tone which sounded insistent and threatening. they
buzz and chatter to themselves as if trying to understand my
question between them. finally they arrive at a conclusion in
their language and one begins to write on a pad of paper he
pulls from his robe-like garment. finally he hands the pad to
the first one nearest me. this one says, "this many cows."

the pad shows: 750,000,000,000,
750,000,000,000,
750,000,000,000,
750,000,000,000,
750,000,000,000,
750,000,000,000,
750,000,000,000,
750,000,000,000,
750,000,000,000, ...

and on and on the numbers go for several pages. they have
clearly come expecting to strip our planet of organic matter.

"well, you can not have that many cows. we do not have that
many cows on the whole of earth. not even close, even if all
the carbon of the biosphere was converted into beef, there
would not be enough for even a tenth of this number." I wonder
how much water they expected to take.

they now talk angrily to each other with much shaking of hands
in odd gestures, but clearly upset. they stomp off toward
their ship. "we will see how many cows you really have."

slamming shut the passageway into their ship, I hear the
engines cranking up, but not well. it spins up enough for the
craft to rise off the roof and leave the house, but it chokes
with a gasp and falls to the yard with a thud. I wonder just
how much we have to fear from a race with such poor mechanics.

I go into the yard again, to see if they are alright or have
they injured themselves. I reach over to the iris which served
as their doorway. it peels back like rotten tinfoil. inside
the three guys are crawling around in sort of a nest of
disheveled tendrils, like dried dark brown weeds. they peer
out with large sheepish eyes, blinking in the sunlight. I am
unimpressed by the nontechnical nature of the control deck.

"look, we will discuss your need for that many cows and I will
see what I can do to fix your engines." this engine repair
could be quite a benefit for both of us as we need the lift
capacity into orbit and interplanetary region. I assume this
is a stellar voyaging craft.

the aliens inside do something on control bank and I get a
whiff of an incredible stink. a defensive mechanism. "don't
even think about using that smell or we will wash out this
thing with soap and lysol." and it reaches over to switch off
the odor maker. if these guys are so good with organic metal
working as their craft indicates, they can reinforce the
structure of the house in return for the repairs to their
motor.

avoid "threatening" and thoughts thereof in yourself and others
especially until your next dream. I have also read of silicon,
glass, being the only barrier to soul.

= Commentary by Heratheta on Glass Dream (970319)=

I read it in an article about missing matter which is supposed
to be over 90 percent of the cosmos. it is the invisible part
of the cosmos and yet it is influential and not the light(black
to white) many confuse as being everything in the cosmos, as if
the missing matter or non-light was the soul of the cosmos and
the light matter was the spirit. there is a picture of the
missing matter's influence in an article dated march in
discover magazine
however I don't know what year. it showed the missing matter
traveling for the most part at right angles to the light flow
of the cosmos. once it enters the light areas we call galaxies
it can be diverted into a silicon (glass)traps . influencing
the silicon and being influenced by the silicon creates the
divine spiral form we see in nature. as per your dream of long
ago I would have avoided "only" and thoughts thereof in myself
and others especially until my next dream and would have stayed
away from the woods in the dream preferably 90 degrees to the
right of the woods, as seen from my sleepsite, as I am right
handed.

* Dream: "Sometimes a snake, is a snake" by A.Person (970319)
*

At 1900 hrs, I woke from a dream about being in a grade school.
I was walking away from the school and toward the woods. I saw
a girl sitting in a motor home and when I walked past it, I
looked inside the front to see if she was indeed someone that
I knew.
She was not and her she asked why I was looking at her. I said
that I thought she was someone that I knew she and her
boyfriend started laughing and started talking amongst
themselves. I walked into the woods and started up an incline.
I knew that there was a snake in the woods but I thought I
would easily be able to avoid it. I saw a bit of the snake
slithering through the dead leaves on the ground and because of
the incline, I fell back and landed in a sitting position.

The snake was very close and I sat very still. I remember
thinking to myself that I was glad that I had practiced asana
and could maintain a single position for an extended period of
time. The snake came from behind and began to crawl up my
back. At that point my view became external and I watched as
the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake slid up my back to about
the mid-point and then stopped.

I became lucid and knew that I would only have one chance even
if this was a dream. The snake paused and rubbed his head
against my back. Then he slowly opened his mouth and the fangs
came forward. He was about to strike when I moved, lightning
fast I grabbed him by the body at about midway and slammed the
head on a rock. I then woke up.

CLOTHING [What we wear tells us about ourselves and the events

* Dream: "The Cost of Winter" from Dreambat (970306) *

I'm visiting a town that is in the dead of winter. I'm out
shopping around with friends, and go into a winter sports
store. I have to get some new boots and look around. I see just
the boots I want. They are made by the same company that made
the hiking boots I got years ago. These are different in that
there is a wrap around piece of material that covers the laces
and most
all of the boot. Perfect for mud, I think to myself. I look at
the price and jump a bit. One Thousand Dollars. A bit out of my
price range, like by a factor of ten! I have that sinking
feeling as I let go of wanting them. The feeling bounces back
and forth. I'm angry I have to settle for less. Well, I could
buy them anyway. No, no, that's just ridiculous. I wonder what
the next
level down will cost. But no, look, they don't have that mud
flap.

Later I live in this town or one like it and go to work. Its
daytime but wintery dark and snowy. There are a dozen other
co-workers there in a very large parking lot. We all walk in
the snow to a building where I have a meeting soon. At first I
sludge along in the snow, then I begin sliding and skating. Its
such a delightful way to move I can't imagine why others aren't
imitating me. I start making larger and larger ellipses, and
eventually am flying in these arcs. I'm still concerned that
everyone else is still sludging along.

* Dream: Cover-Up by Quiet Cellar (970325) *

I dreamed I was walking downtown with my friend, and I realized
I had dirt on my face. I decided I would just cover it up by
completely coloring my face in with a black marker. We were
walking along, and I asked my friend if I was done, meaning was
my face completely colored in yet. She said yes without even
looking at me. We were getting into a more crowded area, and
suddenly I realized that walking around with black ink all over
your face wasn't normal, & said "I think I was better off with
the dirt on my face." My friend got in a line outside a
building for some reason, & I went into the building next door
to go in the bathroom & wash the ink off my face. I expected
the building to be a restaurant but it had been changed into a
clothing store. I walked in and told the girls working there
not to look at my face. I asked if they had a bathroom, and
they said yes, but led me into a little dressing room instead.
I said "soap & water was the point" and was walking out when I
walked by a mirror, & saw that the pen had been almost out of
ink anyway, and there were just some light marks on my face.
So, I decided I just stay there & look at the clothes. I ended
up going into the dressing room to try something on. I was in
the dressing room, completely naked from the waste up, when I
heard a girl form behind me scream. I looked in the mirror &
saw a girl I went to high school with, in the dressing room
behind me, also naked from the waste up. We realized the rooms
were set up so that everyone could see everyone else.

I tried to hide behind the curtain, and get my clothes back on,
but the curtain tore, & it wasn't working, so I gave up & let
some other girl help me. But then a group of men walked
through, & casually stole everyone's clothes. But I looked in
the mirror, & was relieved to see that I was dressed in clothes
from the store. I started telling everyone, "They better let us
wear these clothes home, or we could sue them for letting those
guys in to steal our clothes." Does any one have any
interpretations? :)

Jessel: Actually I question the whole concept that you
believe you can tell others how to dream. Even if I understood
you, I don't believe I could comply with your directions.
Dreaming is not under my conscious control.

= Reply by Heratheta to Jessel's comments (980311)=

Jessel dbts but you are under your control. and the place you
are less distracted from that control is away from your dream.

avoid: "going on forever" and thoughts thereof, until your next
dream if possible, and if you could draw a line from your
sleepsite to the geographical site of the dream, try going
someplace right or left, as you may be handed, away from the
drawn line's direction. also try running away in your dream at
a right angle. I had a similar dream last night and quickened
my pace today.

I have been asked "how do I transcend". for example the "light
and airy" bus dreams and the "dark and gloomy" bridge dream
which are opposite one would transcend both by not taking an
opposing position or attitude but one that was neither light
and airy or dark and gloomy. I used to use the word avoid and
shall try to use it again to be more explicit instead of
"kinda" understood.

DRUGS [Healing or Hurting?]

EATING [Getting nourishment for maintenance, growth and

* Dream: "Eat The Cookies!" by Anne-Marie (970307) *

The dream starts in my house where I am about to go out on a
date with a guy (one I used to like) but we leave in separate
cars to go to a restaurant. When we get to the parking lot I
drive around and around until I find the perfect spot. While
I am doing this the guy I am with reverses in full speed and
you hear the sound of a window smashing but you cannot see any
windows near where he has parked.

We go into the restaurant and it is a beautiful Italian bistro
with dim lights and elegant waiters. The waiter brings us wine
and a basket covered in a napkin. The guy I am with offers the
basket to me and inside it is filled with gigantic M&M
cookies. All he keeps saying is eat the cookies EAT THEM!!!
I start to cry and that is it. Oh and there is a dark shadow
sitting at the table with us, and I am aware of the presence
but we never see who it is.

= Commentary by David on Eat The Cookies!" by Anne-
Marie(970312)=

You have a beautiful and happy opening of your dream since
you go out with your favorite guy. I think there are two
reasons the guy forces you to eat cookies: 1) you may be too
thin that you are afraid the guy would not like you, 2) you
may want to on diet. the shadow that sitting with you may be
the one who don't like you and your guy together. they may be
third person, your/his friends, or even relatives.

= Commentary by Coffee&Tea on "Eat the Cookies!" (970320) =

This is a very interesting dream. You dreamt of a guy you
used to date, and the guy reversed his car in full speed and
smashed a window. Then the guy wanted you to eat the cookies
and a dark shadow sitting between you two...

I think that you have hatred against this guy. You don't
like this guy anymore because of a third person. Hey don't
worry about it, forget the past and enjoy the present.

ESCAPE [Get me outta here!!!]

FEAR [What scares us]

* Dream: "Fear" by BLUE EYES (970306) *

I am a 22 year old university student, and I was hoping
to have some help interpreting a recent dream:

I am inside a type of wearhouse. I am facing some sort of
swimming pool, although I am not swimming in it. There is a
man, a friend of mine (someone I don't know in real life) and
all of a sudden I am afraid of him. I know he wants to hurt
me. I begin to run away. He runs out of the wearhouse and
quickly speeds away in his car. I frantically put on a yellow
T-Shirt and blue shorts, I am very frightened now! I watch the
car speed away, and I begin to run out of the wearhouse. I
have never ran so quickly. It is daylight outside. I pass
street signs that are around my neighborhood, the signs read
"Autumn St." and finally I make a right turn on "Queen St.".
I am racing down the sidewalk with cars rushing by. I am still
running very quickly. I am still frightened. I have a feeling
that the man I ran from wants to hurt me. As I run, I look
back and I see a shed being blown up. I know that was meant
for me. I realize that the man I'm running from has a woman
partner chasing after me and wanting to hurt me. I know that
they (the 2 chasing me) think that I will go into the next shed
that I pass, but luckily I don't because it too blows up into
a fiery ball. I twist and turn around the side streets, trying
to lose those 2 following me. I
think of taking a train, so I go down an escalator and then up
another escalator. It is still daylight. The young man on my
right takes my ticket and the man on my left directs me to the
train. I know that the 2 following me are not too far away, so
I must hurry to catch my train.

There is a short line to get onto the train. I look at my
watch and it is 12:58p.m. . The woman driving the train seems
very nice and asks me to pay $2.40. I take out my money and
pay her. I know the country I'm in is Italy, but I had better
not speak Italian so that it will be more difficult for the 2
following me to find me. So I speak to the woman driving the
train in English. (N.B. I speak both Italian and English
fluently.) She sits me behind her.

The interior of the train looks like a bus. I sit in the seat
right behind the driver. I am facing out the window. I am on
the left of the bus/train. I have my own steering wheel,
gears, speedometer, accelerator, breaks, etc... I notice that
the man sitting next to me on the left has all this as well,
and so do the rest of the passengers on the bus/train. I think
this is odd, but am thankful that the bus/train is leaving so
the 2 following me will not hurt me. The man to my left tells
me that the money I have on me (Canadian Dollars) are not going
to be worth anything at the destination. I am a little
concerned because that is the only currency I have. I begin to
think of ways of attaining money for me to survive once I get
to my destination (a country that begins with the letter "A".
It
is a strange name, I can't remember it now.) I think of how I
could steal women's purses to get some money. I am not scared
anymore. I don't know exactly how I am going to survive when
I get to my destination, but I feel safer now that I am sitting
next to this man and the friendly driver.

I have tried to interpret my dream by using the book by
Tony
Crisp "Dream Dictionary, An A to Z Guide..." but I find the
symbols difficult to interpret and have them make sense in my
every day life. I hope someone out there can assist me.

Thank You,

= Commentary by David on "Fear" by Blue Eyes (970310)=

Well I do not know that much about interpreting dreams but I
found your dream to be very exciting, in fact I have similar
dreams. The difference is; you know how you said that you're
running super fast, well in my dreams no matter how much I try
to run fast I can't, I feel like I'm in slow motion.

= Commentary from Blue Eyes on Fear (970312) =

Thanx for helping out! I think the dream had to do
about me and my workplace, and the change in my position at my
work.

* Dream: "My Soup Dream" by Eileen (970324) *

The other night I dreamt that my friend was going to cook
dinner for me at his apartment. He left me in the living room
to wait while he prepared the food. I was waiting for so long
that my tummy started to growl. He finally came out with about
5 or 6 huge bowls of soup. These bowls were the size of those
big salad bowls. After, he left me there again for a long
time. I was so bored that I ate all of the soup and I woke up.
What does this mean??

*Dream: "From the Buffet Table to the Subway" by Battah
(970315)*

I had this dream two nights ago and can't really make head or
tail of it.

I'm in Lebanon (I know it's Lebanon because I can recognize my
boyfriend's relatives) with my mother and my boyfriend, more
specifically I'm at a party either to welcome home my boyfriend
or to celebrate our engagement. I remember standing in line at
a buffet table preparing a plate for my boyfriend and being
upset at him because he just left me there with his relatives,
many of whom did not speak English.

All of a sudden a street car came clanging through the living
room and there was pandemonium. Someone shouted that we should
hop on to go to the bomb shelter...but instead I chose to run.
I ran down a flight of stairs and arrived at the bomb shelter
which was a subway station.

Already assembled there was masses of people, then a priest
came to teach and I felt happy that he was teaching English, we
read rhymes out loud. Then a woman entered the shelter and
everyone started to shout at her, her boyfriend was sitting
next to me and for no apparent reason, except for the fact that
he was the woman's boyfriend, I pushed him off the subway
platform. He fell unto the tracks and was injured, I started
to laugh and walked away looking for my boyfriend. I opened
the door to the shelter and he was standing there with a chin
high stack of basterma (raw spiced shaved meat).

= Commentary by Battah (970318)

Sorry I wasn't very clear...the person I saw standing at the
door was my boyfriend.

Thanks,

# Dream Question: Astral Projection...by Blue Eyes (970312) #

QUESTION: HOW AND WHY DO PEOPLE ASTRALLY PROJECT???

As well, what are some good techniques to use when wanting to
project? I find that when I try, I don't seem to get anywhere.
It's been a long time since I've projected (2 years) and want
to know what caused me to stop.

Lastly, is astral projection common?

Thank You,

= Commentary on Astral Projection (970312) =

Is astral projection common?

Yes, dreaming is very common. (Can anybody guess my bias?)

By "astral projection", I meant having one's astral body
project on an astral plain. It's sort of like when you dream
that you are floating above you're sleeping body, where in
fact, you *really* are floating above you're body and not
*just* dreaming it. Sorry if I wasn't clear on my question.

During my last astral projection (about 2 years ago), I
was floating down my street, and when I noticed that I was
indeed floating, I guess I got scared and my astral chord
pulled me back to my physical body. In another instance, I
shared a dream with friends of mine on two different
occasions. In one projection, my friend *astrally* came to my
house and the next day when I asked her about it, we could
both recall what we had said and where we were in my room.

During the second projection, my other friend and I
visited her friends in Ireland (her originating country) and
again, as in the previous projection, when we spoke about the
*dream*, we both recalled the key points and locations we
traveled. Any new thoughts???

Thanx, Annalisa

= Commentary by Kwok on Technique for Lucid Dreams (970320) =

I have saw an article (by Denise Linn) which stated that there
is technique for you to have lucid dreaming, if anyone of you
don't have the experience of lucid dreaming, you may want to
try this technique:

Step 1: say to yourself before you go to sleep that "Tonight
I am aware that I am dreaming."

Step 2: Recall you dream if you are woke by the dream, and
say to yourself, "For the next dream, I am going to remember
that I'm dreaming." before you go back to sleep again. You
need to try this process for a period of time before you will
experience lucid dreams. Will you try this tonight? I may.

# Dream Question: Dream Frequency by Maged (970326) #

Hi everyone, I am a new member to the newsgroup, and I have a
question to start with, maybe some one could help me. Why is
it, that I don't dream as often as I used to? I almost hardly
ever dream any more. Even when I do dream, I know I had a
dream when I wake up, but I can not recall what it was about,
it seems like a very fading picture far into the past. One of
my friends at work said that this is because I don't sleep
properly, and I am always exhausted because of working too much
beside school. She said that when I get time to sleep I sleep
so deeply that I don't dream very often, or when I dream, I
don't recall it in the morning because I am tired, and my mind
is occupied with so many other things, and I don't have the
leisure time to think about my dreams in the morning. Even
though her explanation sounds logical, I am still wondering.
May be you have an answer or an explanation for me. I would
appreciate your comments.

Thanks: Maged

questions about dream...

1) I usually dream with colours in my dream, but some of
my friends only see black and white in their dreams, why is
that?

2) My dream repeat itself often, and each time, I dreamed
a bit more about the dream, like a sequel, is that normal, and
why did that happen?

* Dream: "Lot's o' Jeff" by Quiet Cellar (970326) *

Hi, it's me again. :) Pam, thanks for your comments on my Cover
Up dream, it hadn't occurred to me that the girl might be a
reflection of myself, but I think you were right. I have
another dream that I can't figure out, maybe someone can offer
some insights on this. :) Me and my friend F were in a big
record store, and I asked her if she liked Jeff Buckley. She
said no, but she had one of his records. Then I saw two Jeff
Buckley records on a shelf, & went to look at them but then I
couldn't find them. I looked for them for a minute, but then we
left the record store. Then we were walking down a sidewalk, in
a downtown area, with Jeff Buckley. But it wasn't the way J.B.
really is, this one was smaller & younger. I didn't think about
this in my dream though. We were on our way to a Jeff Buckley
concert, but the J.B. we were with was going to watch with us.
There were two J.B.s, the one we were with, and the real life
one. They were the same person though. Then J.B. went into a
building, and I ended up in a motel room with a group of
friends from high school. F was gone. Soon enough, I decided I
had to leave & go back to get in line for the concert with F &
J.B. I asked one of my friends who had been laying on the motel
room bed the whole time for mine & the other two's tickets.
She pulled out a bunch of tickets, which were actually large
squares of tag board that I had written our names on. I felt a
little embarrassed for writing our names on them, & made a joke
about it. Just then my dog came walking in the door. I had no
idea how he had gotten there, but now I had to figure out what
to do with him so I could go to the concert. I knew I couldn't
take him with me, but I didn't want to leave him with my
friends. I thought about having someone come pick him up, but
then I saw that the concert started in 15 minutes, and there
wasn't time. Plus, I knew no one would know where to find this
motel room. I asked my friend on the bed if she would watch
him & then drop him off at my house on her way home, but I
really didn't want to leave him with her. Then my dog turned
into a little white mouse, and was half inside of a little sky
blue balloon. The mouse was round. I explained to someone that
this was just because he was "blown up" Now that he was small,
I thought about taking him to the concert in my pocket, but I
knew this wouldn't work. It occurred to me to take him in a
bag. I saw the perfect bag for this on the floor. I asked who's
it was, but no one would answer me. So I picked up a purple
back pack, & asked if my friends thought I'd be able to take it
into the concert. The girl on the bed said no, but maybe they'd
let me bring a purse in. So, I asked if anyone had a purse I
could borrow. No one answered me.

* Dream: "The Test" by Audrey (970322) *

I dreamed I was in an empty dark room. Standing in the center
of this room, in a semi circle, were five men illuminated by a
halo of light. They were looking at a very big black cloth
covered book. That was the center of attention and the reason
they were there. I could see them all clearly One of them was
Albert Einstein. I don't remember the others, but I've seen
them
before in other dreams, always together. The big book (it was
the size of an average adult) was about me, or was me, I'm not
sure. They seemed very pleased with what they were seeing. I
seemed to be standing off somewhere watching or waiting. As the
five continued to look at the book nodding approval and
amazement, Einstein, who was on the right edge of the circle of
men, seemed to be more open than the other in letting me know
what was going
on, no words were spoken but he winked at me as if to say
everything would be alright.

With this approval I immediately woke up and wrote this dream
down noting the feeling of satisfaction you get when you finish
a test and you know you've passed and done very well without
knowing your score. The dream is still very vivid and
intensifies each day.

Thanks again.

I had this really weird dream. I was on a boat and I could see

water-the funny thing is ever since I was a little kid I was
always afraid to go into open water- you know because of Jaws.
Anyways, I go into the water I felt like I was swimming under
water for a long time without really needing any oxygen. I also
saw goldfish but they were not your typical goldfish, these
were about 5 feet long. So what do you think ? Its pretty weird
hey.

#Dream Request: Water & Dreams" by Glenn Cooper (970311) #

Hello all,

I am putting together a book based around water and dreams. I
am looking for feedback from others whose dreams are also
dominated by the image of water, be it rivers, flash-floods,
tidal waves, the ocean, etc.

I'd greatly appreciate any "water dreams" you might have hidden
away in your dream journals, diaries, etc. that you could send
me, with a view to publication at some later date (hopefully).

I have already collected a few dozen water dreams that people
have sent me from alt.dreams, plus about 50 of my own. But I
need to wade through some more!

So, if you can help, E-mail me at gwcooper@mpx.com.au

Thanks in advance,

Glenn Cooper.

Vivian's Questions : A student puts out a request on the web
for ultimate dream information.

= Commentary by Bob K on Vivian's Questionnaire (970305) =

Vivian - These are very good questions. It would fill several
books and perhaps even a Dream Encyclopedia to answer all the
questions fully and in detail. Unfortunately, the answers to
most of the questions cover a range of responses from a simple
yes to a simple no, and every variation in between. The
simplest questions to answer are the laboratory verified ones
dealing with physical measurable data. Since the essence of a
dream is mental and emotional, and is brought to our conscious
awareness through our remembered interpretation of the
experience (yes- they can be of images, sounds, smells, tastes,
or touch), the facts then become more difficult to ascertain.

Answers to many of the questions depend on the responders
perception of the value of dreaming which is usually closely
related to their personal dreaming experience. Those that have
had positive experiences will emphasize the positive aspects,
those with chronic nightmares may emphasize the disturbing
aspects, while those who don't recall will emphasize the
meaninglessness of the experience.

In my opinion, the best single source for you answers would be
a book by Robert Van De Castle called OUR DREAMING MIND which
was first published a few years ago and may be the most
comprehensive single source for data on the many aspects of
dreaming. It should be in your library, or local bookstores.

Below are my abbreviated responses to your questions.

>>Dear Sir/Madam,

>>I'm very interested in stuff about dreaming, and I'm now
doing a school project. Would you please answer me the
following questions?

>>1. What is dream? How do you define it? *A personal internal
experience which can be recalled by the conscious mind.

>>2. Why do we dream? *No one really knows, but it seems to be
involved like sleep (which it is usually associated with) with
some kind of regulatory system within the body like a
thermostat for Heating or Air Conditioning. What are the
causes? *Many, but primarily it is in our nature to dream, just
as we breathe and eat.

>>3. When do people usually dream? Do we have dream Every time
we sleep? Science says every night we sleep during REM (Rapid
eye movement)intervals related to a specific stage of sleep in
approximately 90 minute intervals, however, my experience is
that a dream can occur at anytime - during a short nap,
micronap or even during the day while we are awake.

>>4. How long does a dream last? *From a second to over 30
minutes with most toward the lower end of the time line.

>>5. Does everyone dream? Some people claim that they don't
have dreams, is it really they don't or they can't remember?
*Science says we all dream at least several times a night based
on REM studies. When people are awaken from them, they almost
always recall experiences. Recalling is another issue. People
range from non-recallers to voluminous recallers. However,
there is no fixed pattern. A person who is a heavy recaller
for a period of time may have "dry spells" or stop recalling as
frequently during some stages of their life. Someone who never
remembered may start recalling at some stage of their life.

>>6. What kind of people dream most? Why? *Some people recall
easily by their nature - a talent/skill they are born with,
others can train themselves to recall.

>>7. Why do we always can't remember our dreams even though we
are sure we've dreamed of something that night? *Memory skills,
intentions, and our goals all impact our ability to remember
dreams.

>>8. Do external stimuli affect the dreams? How? Clearly yes.
Just as "internal" issues always impact our dreams, often
"external" stimuli are often incorporated into our dreams and
may play a role in the experience.

>>9. Do our dreams relate to our waking life?* YES!! - both the
obvious and not so obvious concerns and issues we are dealing
with (physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual) in our
journey through life.

>>10. Are the things we dream about true or not? *Dreams are
mostly symbolic to a large degree, and sometimes "compensatory"
(where things we don't experience in waking life are
experienced) or of a "wish fulfillment" nature (where our
desires or fears are realized), so clearly we cannot take
dreams at their face value as far as "truth" or "false." They
do point out issues we are dealing with and offer perspectives
we may not realize. Most people, places, and things in our
dreams reflect parts of us or associations with characteristics
of these people, places, and things not the literal person,
place or thing. We may not be visiting Paris next month, or
marrying that special person next year, but clearly vacation
time and romance/commitment are on our minds. To complicate
matters further, some people think that our dreams are insights
into another reality which is just as real as the one we live
in. A Chinese thinker posed the question "Are you dreaming of
the butterfly or is the butterfly dreaming or you?" If anyone
can sort out how to have or even identify dreams which are 100%
reflective of our waking reality and unfailingly "predictive,"
they would become very powerful and wealthy.

>>11. Why do we sometimes dream of the same thing over and over
again? *We are concerned with a serious issue. A repetitive
dream is a message to deal with an unresolved issue or your
internal resolution of an issue which you thought was resolved.

>>12. Sometimes we wake at the middle of a dream, is it
possible to continue the >>dream when we sleep again? If yes,
how can we do so?* Some people can re-enter a dream in the
dream state. Again, it seems to be a natural skill- though
much rarer than the recalling dreams skill. It is easier to
re-enter it in our conscious life and play with possible
developments and endings. Those that can re-enter dreams
usually have a highly developed willpower or highly developed
concern with control over their environment.

>>13. Do dreams predict our future? Is dream a fortuneteller?
*They can and they might. Stories abound of future foreseen
events, but skeptics are not convinced. Unfortunately, most
publicized "foreseen" events involve tragedies or deaths which
are highly emotional charged events.

>>14. What causes nightmares? *Fear, anxiety, stress and
concern over situations from our past, the unknown or
consequences to actions we have taken or are thinking of
taking.

>>15. Can we share dreams with others? *If you mean sharing the
same dream while dreaming, there are some people who claim to
have done this on more than one special occasion. It is very
difficult to prove however, and even very rare for these
people.

>>16. Is there a reason for every dream we have? How can we
interpret our dreams? *I say YES, some say dreams are merely
random firing of neurons. There are numerous ways of
interpreting and working with your dreams.

>>17. Why do we usually cannot see ourself in the dreams? *The
same reason why we usually cannot see ourselves in waking life
except though a mirror or reflective material - we see the
world from within ourselves.

>>18. Is it true that we will feel more tired the next morning
if we have more dreams that night? *A relaxing or
reinvigorating energizing dream will have you waking up with
the world at your feet, while stressful conflictive dreams may
tire you. Some people are light sleepers and will feel tired
if they don't meet some minimum quality sleep standards,
Others who are deep sleepers may actually move around a lot
during their sleep interfering with their "restfulness." Some
people walk around in their sleep.

>>19. Is it possible for us to stop dreaming?*When we stop
living our lives in this world.

I will be appreciated if you can send me the answers of
the above questions as soon as possible.

> >Also, may I have your name? Bob K.

>>Would you please tell me what and where you work? In
Washington DC with the Government in a non-dream related
position.

>>What should I study in the university if I want to have a
career about dream analysis? Psychiatry and Psychology are the
traditional fields in our Western Society (as Shamans,
Witch-Doctors, Oracles, and Guru's are in others), but new
opportunities in interdisciplinary activities are developing.
Traditional focus on dream analysis has been in a health, or
mental health environment, but there are many other areas of
interest that dreams can address in healthy people which are
being explored more thoroughly these days.

>>19. Is it possible for us to stop dreaming? May I add that it
is psychologically damaging not to dream. I believe there have
been studies that attest to the fact that people who are
prevented from dreaming go through emotional disorientation of
extreme magnitudes.

>>>6. What kind of people dream most? Unless I misunderstood
the question, there is no one kind of dream dreamt by all
peoples... there are, however, dreams dreamt can be categorized
as frequently dreamed... such as dreams of success & failure
(failure to make oneself heard; failure to pass an exam);
failure to make oneself understood on a telephone (suggesting
weakness the ability to convey ideas); fear of loss of identity
(unable to recall a name; unable to produce documents of
identification); loss of direction (out of control in car or
train), and so on...

>>10. Are the things we dream about true or not? For dreams
and in the dream arena, I suspect this question may require
rephrasing -- what are you really wanting to know here?

>>13. Do dreams predict our future? Is dream a fortuneteller?
They absolutely can at times, but only in retrospect does a
dreamer know that a dream dreamt was prophetic. Though I have
not read this book, An Experiment with Time, London, Reprint,
Faber & Faber, 1958 (3rd ed., 1927), as I understand it, JW
Dunne, author, was an scientist and engineer. His discovering
the fact that dreams are prophetic precipitated full-scale
research.

>>16. Is there a reason for every dream we have? Had I not
recorded dreams for 20 years, I would have said, "No." But now,
seeing how even a dream recalled and recounted in just a few
words can have profound meaning, I cannot help but believe that
there is a reason for every single dream. We're just not
evolved enough to fathom the reasons. As one example, in the
early eighties, "I dreamed the movement of my life was
Lysistrata." That was all. I had no idea who or what Lysistrata
was, but faintly suspected it might be the title of a Broadway
musical. A couple of years later I stumbled across the fact
that Lysistrata was actually an ancient Greek play by
Aristophanes. So I bought the play and read it (honoring my
dream). A thumbnail sketch: It was about a woman who banded all
the other Spartan(?) women together so that they would withhold
sex from their husbands and, therefore, stop the war (as I
recall). After reading the play in the early to mid-eighties
(and what war was going on, especially where women might be
involved) I could not fathom what possible reason I might have
dreamt the dream. Now may I tell you that for the past several
years, I have been embroiled in Women with AIDS social research
whereby I can only conclude that the only way to stop the war
(AIDS) is to withhold sex from their husbands/lovers/partners
who are too macho, too unconscious to deign to wear a condom.

>>How can we interpret our dreams? Not to plug a book but the
best book I've ever read on dream interpretation is Tony
Crisp's Dream Dictionary: An A to Z Guide to Understanding Your
Unconscious Mind (A clear, easy to use handbook of archetypes,
symbols, situations, dream functions, dream organization,
interpretation techniques, and history of dreams and dream
research) in paperback and published by Dell Paperbacks in
1990.

>>18. Is it true that we will feel more tired the next morning
if we have more dreams that night? Sometimes the reverse is
true for me... if I go for prolonged periods of time without
dream recall, I

find myself frenetically living through a
day...or barely moving through a day. Even though I could say
at times I have more energy at my disposal, the quality of
energy is frenetic, even anxiety-ridden. When I return to
normal dream recall (though I am sure I have dreamed
nevertheless), it is as if I have achieved psychic balance.

>>17. Why do we usually cannot see ourself in the dreams? Just
as a side note, to see oneself in a mirror could suggest an
identity crisis...(see a beautiful book, The Secret Language of
Dreams: A Visual Key to Dreams and Their Meanings by David
Fontana with paintings by Peter Malone, published by Chronicle
Books, 1994) but, when you really think about it, who is
ourself that we would actually be seeing? If you, wide awake,
closed your eyes, took away your hair, your face, your arms,
hands, legs, feet, torso -- what remains?

Wow! Did the month of March go flying by or what? March
Madness (US College Basketball fever championship time) is
almost over. For US Cable TV devotees, The Learning Channel
featured an ALIEN INVASION week with documentaries related to
stories of UFO/Alien visits and encounters - believers and non-
believers. Are those abduction stories the result of dreams,
hallucinations or actual experiences? Take a break from the
abduction that daily waking reality holds over us, and share
some of your dreams or dream wisdom - stretch your imagination.
