Notice from the editor:
Between school and my two jobs, I find myself with very little time to
put together the newsletter anymore. It looks like things are only going
to continue getting more and more busy for me. So, unless someone else
is willing to take over my position as head editor, it looks like this
will be the *LAST* issue of Electric Dreams.
For those who might be interested in being head editor, you can email me
at cbeattie@uwspmail.uwsp.edu for information on what responsibilities
are involved.
In case nobody takes over for me, I would like to thank everyone who
participated in Electric Dreams and made it as successful as it was.
Special thanks to those who shared editorial chores with me, and
attempted to lighten my load. Perhaps I will see some of you again in
alt.dreams.

Dreams and Comments
By the way, an interesting note for ? another section??
Last night I dreamed I was throwing chairs aside to hurry to prevent
a man from sliding off a concrete platform into a racing, icy river.
Just as I got near him, he feel in. I don't swim well and hesitated
to jump in after him. Then a female nun jumped in to try to save him
and was washed away and needed saving too. I yelled "Call 911!" I
woke up my husband as I really had yelled that, and he woke me up
asking me "What are you yelling about calling someone?"

======COMMENTS ON THE ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR BY VAL,THE DREAM
SHAMAN======
I was first struck by the comment "...a disabled people can
do anything" made by the dreamer about her dream; makes one wonder
whether the people in the dream are truly disabled. Perhaps it's a
state of mind?
When the people "hook up their chairs to a wire that was
strung across a valley and were supposed to make it to the other
side" there is an image of *trying to cross ground* and reach the
*other side* by performing an awkward group tight-rope act on wheels
--a near impossible feat! "Crossing to an other side" =
communication, to me. The dreamer is trying to reach out or bring
together others with a common "disability" or challenge. Work needs
to be done, but no true communication has taken place.
I feel this is a dream about beginnings and plans. At the
start of this project, everything's a bit overwhelming. So much to
do and so many ways to do it. There is also an element of
danger--it's not very wise or practical to perform a high wire act in
a wheel chair, even more dangerous in a group where everyone is
"connected" in some way to each other. If one person falls, they all
fall together. End of story.
The job is near impossible for these "challenged" people.
The high wire act gets even more perilous when the wire is "live."
The guy who is stuck out on the wire alone gets electrocuted and not
given a chance for survival or help from the others. He has isolated
himself and does not want to take anyone down with him (I'm assuming
that he doesn't, we don't really know what this wheel chair guy's
wants and needs how because they are unimportant in the dream and the
dreamer has not revealed any).
Perhaps the dream was so funny because it was so gruesome--a
light reaction to something so horrible is common. Most slasher
horror movies are down right hysterical. Laughing at the grotesque
dream could've been her mind's way of letting her know it was just a
dream and the images within it were merely symbolic and may not even
be a concern of hers. If we were to probe a bit deeper, it could
also reflect a tendency to laugh at a problem when you should be
paying attention to what's going on and why.
The man in the "electric wheelchair" could also be a symbol
of a person who is too confident, ambitious, or aggressive. This
person isolates his or herself to work on stuff that matters most to
them only. They are not a "people" person. He/She is also very
much aware that being out there on their own is a bit dangerous,
perhaps even stupid; the person may unconsciously want or need
support, but they turn down help when it's available to "save face."
When this person takes on too much work, they "burn out" (thus, the
electrocution image) and flop awkwardly around like a fish out of
water (or fish being electrocuted, as this case goes).
The wheelchair guy in the dream could also be the dreamer
herself observing herself at a distance. It would be silly to ask
her; do you see yourself as a disabled man in a wheelchair trying to
get across to "the other side" by performing a "live" wire act on
wheels? All those images are symbolic. It seems that the point of
the wheelchair guy's plight is not the matter of "getting across to
the other side" but staying in a safe middle ground/zone where no one
can get to him. He is energetic (electric) and bounces.
Perhaps if we look away from the gruesome "electrocution"
thing we can see that the man's plight is also a pleasure. The dream
seems to be a contradiction/combination of things.
What do _you_ think?
========COMMENTS ON TORNADOES (7-30-94)BY VAL, THE DREAM
SHAMAN=======
I've only got a couple of minutes to do this so my comments
here may read a bit fragmented... Thunderstorms in dreams to me
mean some sort of "natural" conflict is going on in my environment.
Since you saw three distinct "long, sinuous" tornadoes, I'd say there
are/were three challenges facing you. You watch them coming toward
you. Observing how they look and change (from sharp and distinct to
fuzzy and full of debris).
While you are doing this, you are gathering information about
the three problems facing you. After you've gained enough necessary
information, you decide to take cover and prepare to wait out the
storms. This shows a healthy reaction and decision. You are facing
these challenges and preparing for them.
When you seek shelter, you are with other women, but these
women are young; perhaps inexperienced? I feel that these women are
a "shelter" to you themselves. When you are in a basement, you are
within (or near) the foundation of a house.
Darth Vader is haunting you, though. Perhaps he represents
someone abusive (an enemy) you left behind when you sought shelter
from the storms. He is wounded and defeated, yet is being helped by
others. This is a surprise to you because you know how horrible this
person/image can be. Why would anyone want to help him? Underneath
all his darkness, he is still human and still needs healing. People
who are abusive are most likely victims themselves once upon a time.
They need to be healed as much as their "abuse-ees" need to be
healed. You realize this once you remember the end of "Return of the
Jedi" when Darth comes around after his "master" (the cruel evil
emperor) has been slayed and is able to help his son.
I see these three storms of your dream surrounding a Darth
Vader-like person. You are distant to him and most of your
friends/co-workers are younger than you are. You have set your
foundation and hope in your heart that this Darth-Vader person in
your life defeats his/her demons and is not defeated by his/her
demons. You want this person to do this for themself. Helping
him/her would make this person dependant on others and they wouldn't
learn anything through it. Yet, you know that, as long as healing
will take place, you can weather the storms in relative safety among
friends who share similar experiences.
What do you think?
=========COMMENTS FOR JOURNEY THROUGH THE SEWER (7-31-94)BY VAL, THE
DREAM SHAMAN======
Darth is your companion, yet you are unsure. He is beside you
and the tracks. The railroad tracks, though different, support the
passage of two very different types of trains. Perhaps you and the
"Darth Vader" person are following the same track (even though you
both are different from each other) or purpose in life, yet you are
continually unsure about him and are surprised that you both are
following this "same track."
You lose Darth by falling into water (love? releasing
emotion?), but you are able to float (another image of "riding" some
sort of conflict out). As you go through the tunnel, you hold up your
arm to keep away cobwebs (entanglements)and you realize that there is
something "rewarding" about riding the "current" (of your emotions).
You remember some words of guidance you received in the past. There
is something noble about suffering and getting through difficult
things (the sewers).
You stop at a dead end. This emotional stuff got you
nowhere. Riding it out isn't enough. You know you have to go about
things the hard way. You come to a door--it leads you to "water
works" (emotions in check or working more
constructively-emotionally?).
An early morning= new beginning. Someone is singing. Music=
a celebration or expression of. Perhaps reminiscent of a serenade to
you for getting through things? Song = reward. What do you think?
Yet you worry you are late. Guilty about something? Perhaps there
is something you feel you must do but time has already taken its
course over the deal. Then you realize that it is out of your
control and you wake to reality.
============COMMENTS FOR ROAD TRIP(8-1-94)BY VAL, THE DREAM
SHAMAN=======
You are not being driven, you are driving. You are in
control of something. Someone else is trying to get to the same place
you are getting to, but he is misled. The people who have helped
him know full well he will not make it and he moves on into oblivion.
You drive on a two lane at night. A symbol of being split in
two late in a situation. You lose control and are on foot, but were
you still on the road? No. You enter someone else's house--a two
story--again the dualism! There are two stories being told--yours
and someone else's. You are in the "someone else's" home--whatever's
going on is not yours to dwell within--perhaps a situation where you
are accused of something that is not your fault, yet you dwell on
it/in it at the lowest floor/story. This roots you to the ground.
You can't totally free yourself from it.
But then there's the den of birds. One bird that you point
out is an albino cockatiel--to me, anything white is a symbol of
death and change. Birds fly and rule the air, hence they are beings
of air; the aspect of intelligence (birds are quite smart),
spirituality, and peace. A white bird (the combination of these
elements) is a symbol of a release. The birds are tame. You are not
threatened by this death/release; it is a friendly mingling of
spirits.
You are discovered by the owner of the house. He are
surprised that you have come to them and do not harass you about it.
He guides you when you ask for his help, but he cannot give you all
the details. You know where your destination now lies (Huntsville)
and all other routes to that one mysterious place (route 10 in
particular) have no clear direction.
I feel these dreams of yours express what has gone on
recently in your life. You start out waiting out a storm, lose
someone who is an enemy (Darth Vader) who needs help (he's a bad
guy, wounded) yet you need to help/heal yourself, you make it through
some rough emotions (facing them), and travel several roads to get to
your destination. Only one road leads to your true destination and,
with some guidance from others, you realize all other roads will lead
you nowhere. At the end of your serial dream(s) you have made the
decision to move forward...
Good luck!
======COMMENTS ON THE MATERIAL/IMMATERIAL WORLD BY VAL, THE DREAM
SHAMAN======
The glass you "bend through" is a classic image of
"shape-shifting"--you are manipulating reality and changing the way
you see and go about doing things in order to gain a new perspective
on a particular situation. The glass is a transparent barrier, a way
of getting through things by "seeing them through." You need to
break into the other side to explore what it is you need to get
through. It seems to be a lucid dream rubic's cube...
You don't want to fly because that involves "flight" or
escaping the challenge instead of meeting it head on. You must face
the issue at hand, it's not going to go away, and you must get
through it on your own. The glass warms underneath your fingertips
as you do this, and I feel you found out that the challenge isn't so
bad and can be enjoyed. You are learning something through this by
doing it. No one has taught you how... Like many things in life,
you just "do it and get through it."
You feel you should explore, but then this becomes
unnecessary. You already know what's going on inside you and a
review would be pointless at this time. It's a time to move forward,
no time for reflection. You walk into a bedroom...this has all sorts
of symbolism. Think about what people normally do in bedrooms. We
sleep, dream, (in your case) work, and (some of us) have intimate
encounters with others (sex). The lighting is dim--a sense of
mystery about the place. You stand in front of a dresser "with
hidden compartments"--again a sense of mystery, the unknown, the
unexplored. Were you tempted to go through the dresser?
Whether you were or not, you do not explore this mysterious
thing and go for the surface stuff; the styrofoam box. Now,to me,
styrofoam is fake, artificial, and just cheap. Then again, it is
also light. In any case, the box is on the surface of a mystery you
are not yet exploring--you are just playing at it.
You're going to hit me, Chris, but the "ball" in the box has
all sorts of sexual implications. The ball is, well, you
know...(will you let me get away with this?) a common symbol of
testicles (not tentacles!). The testicle--I mean--_ball_ (in the
box = some sort of union?) is on top the dresser (the dresser being
a symbol of the feminine sex or womb with all its "hidden
compartments"). You decide to take the ball in the box off of the
dresser and _you_ penetrate the surface of the male (ah-hem) symbol.
You expect the ball to be just like one of those accupressure balls
with the chimes and stuff but it just ends up being made out of
styrofoam, just like the box.
You are handling all surface material. The male symbol (if
you wish to agree with me that it _is_ indeed a male symbol) is all
fluff and superficiality. The ball being in the box also reminds me
of a gift you have received, but it doesn't turn out like you had
planned/expected. It's not only a disappointment, but it's also a
defeat. You thought you were close, but you discover it was all
"surface" and not worth anything--light and fluffy styrofoam.
I believe that glass triggers lucidity for you because glass,
for you, could be a symbol of "vision"--you "see" through the glass
and it is a fragile barrier. You get through situations by
"observing" what's going on from behind "glass." Since you're a
close friend of mine, I know you wear glasses. You see the world
through glass. Before you act or even make a decision to act upon
something, you review, preview, everything-view the aspects of a
situation(s) in detail.
When you "get through" the glass and manipulate objects in
your dreams lucidly, you are manipulating the world/reality around
you. Lucidity may have been more difficult for you to first achieve
because you were not used to being in a position of
power/manipulation and I know you are uncomfortable when you are
placed in a position of leadership where your responsibility is to
tell others what to do. As a "web weaver" you are currently
manipulating through the world through, yet again, glass...you know?
Not only the glass of your eye-glasses, but the glass of a computer
monitor!
Ain't that a kick?
--Val the (sexually-metaphorically-depraved) Dream Shaman
============COMMENTS ON BIZARRE SHOPPING DREAM BY VAL, THE DREAM
SHAMAN======
My first impressions were that you are covering up your
aggressive (perhaps even assertive side) and letting others (the
character Jon Claude Van Damm) fight for you and others. You are
distant and unharmed by the action. You watch as two mobsters harass
the owner of a store. You do not take action. Instead, Van Damm
shows up to beat on the perpetrators.
You describe Van Damm coming up "a service escalator"; an
image of putting someone on a pedestal? Are you the damsel in
distress? Since Van Damm is coming up from a _service_ escalator, he
is highly regarded for his "service" as a fighter for you and others.
He fights a "high kicking fight"--he is showy and fast; the hero in
action. You stand by and watch at a safe distance.
The mobsters showed up while you were in a fish shop in the
frozen fish section. I get the feeling you weren't there for "cold
fish" but you are put beside "cold fish" while the fight between the
mobsters and Van Damm is going on. Perhaps the violence of their
fight leaves you cold, or you were already put off by "cold fish"
when the mobsters started harassing the owner and, romantically, Van
Damm comes to the rescue--for the owner and even for you. You bring
yourself away from the "cold fish" and leave.
You feel old-fashioned (hence the Victorian style dress) and
want to pamper yourself (by trying on beautiful gowns). All this
goes on a balcony level. Perhaps a nostalgic wish to be cherished and
decorated, put on a pedestal? This dream may also have something to
say about your relationships and experiences with men in general. Are
you looking for a relationship, been through the chase, and (due to
fighting/ harassment/domestic violence) have you been left cold?
====== INTERPRETATION BY CATHY OF THE DRY LAGOON AND THE MAN WITH A
GUN BY JIM (ISSUE 15)===
DREAM: "I went to a place that seemed remote to me, to see some
relatives; [...] When I got there, I went out to see what else was
there. All of my relatives and I went [...] to a building. I was in
this building with many artifacts. Eventually I wound up in a
chemistry lab with a group of scientists, both male and female. We
all went downstairs. There was a party going on in the first floor or
basement of this building. The atmosphere was dark, [...] It also had
a cafeteria, which [...] was somewhat bright, [and ...] an ice cream
area and a dark bar-like area with a lot of people, especially men
there."
INTERPRETATION: The trip back to family is a journey of the mind,
back to one's roots, an exploration of the personality born of and
shaped by the family. The artifacts suggest a concern with inherited
traits. The scientists replace the family as a clue of the clinical
dream approach to understanding the self. The journey down is a
journey into the self. The various parts of the building, dark and
light, suggest a rich complex personality. The speaker seems male
and the men indicate masculine characteristics.
DREAM: "I was in a party of people where two of the women got
promotions to Captain, and I remembered as I went by the ice cream
bar that we remarked that the two women made the grade."
INTERPRETATION: The promotion of the women suggests that feminine
characteristics are admired by some authority which the dreamer wants
to impress. This seems to be a reminder to encourage the few
feminine traits amid all the masculine ones.
DREAM: "Then we went (the scientist group) [...] to find things [...]
to what looked like a river in a jungle [but ...] it was more likely
a cave [...] The river was lighted, and it seemed clear and sparking
light bluish green, and inviting [...] We all took off our clothes
and hopped in. The water felt good on my body, but it also seemed
strange. It seemed to have a gelatinous crust on the top, that
dented like a black-hole demonstration when you jumped in it. The
water did not seem all that wet, although it did seem of reasonable
consistency. It seemed almost as if it were made of chemicals."
INTERPRETATION: The jungle image suggests the difficulty of
penetrating the personality further. The path to enlightenment about
the self is symbolized by the river, which is inviting. The effort
to immerse the conscious in the water, or the "soul" of the self,
however, is not really successful and feels artificial.
DREAM: "One of the men in my party got out and walked away. He was
medium height and stockily built with a beard, and he looked like a
big Western guy [...]"
INTERPRETATION: The man who leaves indicates perhaps the traditional
Western Man of Science, the post-enlightenment scientist, who
abandons the effort to understand the soul and returns to more
socially interactive levels of the self.
DREAM: " [...] I finished getting food in line at the cafeteria,
went by the cashier without paying since I wanted ice cream too, and
got some ice cream, with the intention of going back and paying.
[...] Then a tall guy came out;[...] He held a pistol in his hand. I
finished getting my ice cream and then I walked back to the cashier.
I saw the guy come towards me. When I saw this, I dropped everything

and walked away from the bar area and outside the building. I quickly
turned right and looked back to find him walking towards me. I then
walked quickly outside the building from the back to the front. Then
I turned right again at the front. I looked back and saw him back
there still coming after me with the gun in his hand. [...] I wanted
to figure out what to do"
INTERPRETATION: The return to get food, suggests a return to more
physical and social levels of the self. The quest to confront the
spiritual self has failed, defeated by the scientific approach. The
earlier promotion of the woman perhaps suggests that abandoning a
traditional scientific approach for a more "feminine" or spiritual
approach to self-understanding might help the dreamer. The worrying
about payment suggests that the unresolved business of
self-exploration.
The man with the gun confronting the dreamer with the ice cream is a
provocative image. Only the dreamer can figure this out and the very
fear associated with the image in the dream suggest deep inhibitions
around the image. The dream might be exploring a fascination with
male-male sexuality or male-male bonding. The ice cream and gun are
phallic symbols. Other interpretations are of course logical
depending on the connotations of these objects to the dreamer
(innocence vs. violence, fulfilling vs. draining, etc.) Appropriately
the dream ends with confusion, a sign of unresolved business.
======INTERPRETATION BY CATHY OF HIPPIE JESUS(9-9-94)BY VAL,THE DREAM
SHAMAN (Issue 16)======
This dream could symbolize the feeling of degradation experienced by
many women who participate in Christian religions that do not allow
women to become priests or, in some versions, even hint at women
being more innately evil than men. The insensitivity of some
Christian churches on issues such as birth control, non-reproductive
sex, and abortion could be a subtext of this dream.
======FEMALE PERSONA ENDS QUIZ GAME BY JIM BLOWERS
(JBLOWERS@AOL.COM)======
I went to my room at a hotel where a conference was being
given. It was the same old hotel as in the previous two dreams I had
tonight. There was a wall on which I could back up files. I pressed
some buttons but they would not work. It kept giving me the wrong
color.
The room looked like a bedroom with a wall with buttons,
which was on the side of the room away from the window. The room was
about the size of my dorm in Evanston. It was about 11:30 pm or so.
I found out about a game that was played late at night. It
was some trivia-type game played over the gizmos. There was a central
room, where the people ran the game, and there were walls on each of
the rooms to receive the questions of the game players. The design of
this floor (it was maybe about sixth or seventh story) was the same,
roughly, as that of the first floor of the Rochester Public Library.
My room was on an offshoot corridor in the front left, and the game
played from the back left.
I went back to play. I waited for the question to come. It
came. It was something like who's the most of some characteristic? I
don't remember exactly what it was, and I suppose if I tried to
remember it in the dream, it would change. In any case, the question
came from the window side of the room opposite from the gizmo wall. I
knew the answer was probably A. I tried to enter A on the gizmo wall,
but the machine would not take the answer. Then I heard that someone
else had guessed it and had won.
So I went out into the middle lobby across to the room where
they were running this game. There were two rooms. The immediate room
was administrative, and the game was apparently played from the room
to the left. I asked to talk to the game people, but they would not
accept me. In fact, they were starting the game again. I decided to
increase my chances.
Apparently the game could take many sorts of contestants. So
I made up a female entry for myself and entered her in as a player.
Now both my original self and my new female entity were contestants.
I never, however, felt like I was the female, or did I see her. I
went back to my room, ready to play as either player, but set up to
play the female one.
When they started, they immediately squawked about a car left
parked in their room by my female persona. I don't remember such a
car and I wondered where they could get something so off the wall as
that. My display read "go" and "100," with several other things lit.
I yelled something like "Take that car and shove it!" All the lights
went off, the "100" changed to "10" indicating not playing and the
"go" went off and went into standby status. I figured they must have
thrown both my personas out of the game for making that remark. End
of dream.
======DREAM COMMENTARY BY BOB ON FEMALE PERSONA ENDS QUIZ GAME BY
JIM======
The dream opens with the dreamer at "the same old hotel as in
the previous two dreams." Hotels are meant for temporary shelter,
but the dreamer keeps showing up there. The "wall on which (the
dreamer) could back up files" may be the dream mind making a pun;
i.e. the dreamer feels his back is up against a wall.
In any event, the fact that the buttons don't work means the
dreamer is risking some kind of irretrievable loss. The fact that
the wall kept giving the dreamer "the wrong color" may also be a kind
of pun; i.e. there is an unresponsive "wall" which is telling the
dreamer he is the wrong color. Possibly the dreamer is a member of a
minority group, or for some other reason feels discriminated against.
There is a trivial "game" being played, but the dreamer is in
a no win situation. He has the answer but the "machine" (the people
who are running the "game"?), won't "take the answer." The dreamer
isn't accepted by the people who are running the game. They don't
want to hear what he has to say, and won't "accept" him, in fact they
start running "the game" again.
The fact that the game has an "administrative" room, and the
dreamer works with the army, may indicate that possibly the conflict
in the dream concerns his career advancement.
The dreamer tries to increase his chances by entering himself
in the contest as a minority (woman) This may indicate that the
dreamer believes that being a member of a discriminated minority can
be an advantage. In the dream by representing himself as a woman he
has doubled his chances of winning.
The people running the game object to their game room being
turned into a garage or storage area for a vehicle which offers
potential mobility to a minority member. The dreamer openly
expresses his feelings ("Take that car and shove it!") and his
perfect 100 turns into a 10, it (he) is devalued by 90%. The
dreamer is back in a no-win situation again. He is on standby
status, a status which can be defined as availability not being
utilized.
In sum, the conflict in the dream appears to be related to
the dreamer's feeling that he is being discriminated against, and
that discrimination is thwarting his career advancement. He cannot
win, because when he has the answer, the "wall" or "machine" won't
accept it, and when he openly expresses his feelings, his performance
is devalued, and he is placed on standby; i.e., he stops advancing.
If the dreamer disagrees with the above interpretation, then it is
wrong.
Only the dreamer knows.
