NULL mag Issue 07 05 Tranquila
one of the words that caught my attention during watching "the money
heist" (aka le casa de papel) is the word: tranquila! and not just
because it's being used so many times in the show, but because it was
being used in times where there was panic, disturbance and all crazy
stuff happened. and in that particular thing is that i find a
resemblance with the bbs community :O
now days you can read in various bbs places, that many users come back
to the bbs scene, because of the "serenity" it offers, because things
are calm down, it's not like it was back in the days, with flames and
stuff and certainly it's not like facebook, with trolls, ads etc. so,
from that description, it seems that bbses today are something like a
monastery, in where you can come and find peace... tranquila...
on the other hand, if you watch the news for half an hour (tv,
internet, make your pick) you can surely understand that the world
today is not a peaceful place. on the contrary, all hell is breaking
loose! wars, famine, diseases, poorness, terrorism, economic collapse,
climate changes, earthquakes, mass gunshots etc. so, how can we in the
bbs scene be so calm and just making conversations on how to install
this and that bbs software, where to find ansi, hot to run dos doors
etc? did we did that on the past? NO! back then, you could find all
sorts of discussions, from bbs stuff to cooking and also back then the
world was way too peaceful, than it is now.
the bbs scene, at least for me, resembles a care house for old man,
that they are on pension age and want to live the rest of their lifes,
calmly, even if there is a war outside.
specially today, with all those problems we have spoke all ready, a
bbs, an echo area should be a neutral ground to express our views,
political, ethical, religion etc. explain to others what is going on,
on the other side of the world, where things are not so peaceful and
people die of hunger, lost jobs, natural phenomena etc. i am sure that
90% of you, you all ready use social media to talk about these things,
so why not in the bbs community? you prefer facebook, twitter etc?
instead of an echonet? why? because the sysop of that net will keep an
eye on you? track you down etc? i think not... but then why you prefer
those big-corp nets?
i am sure that while you read this, you think that, no... the bbs
scene should be peaceful/calm as it is, not come back to the old
"flaming ways" etc. but just think it for a moment. if the bbs scene,
now, it's like the example with the old-man care house... what it will
become when those old guys (you and me) will perish?
if we don't put some "salt" in our discussions in the bbs community,
eventually will die, with us or because of just simple boredom... i
mean... ok... let's admit it... how many times can we discuss on how
to install a dos door game? if we want people to come back to bbsing,
we should broad the subjects of conversations not just to technical
stuff, but also in other matters, that are part of our every day lives
and have impact on humans globally.
for those who want to only talk about bbs stuff and have their peace,
there are echoareas to do so, us there are echoareas for politics and
stuff, but no one uses them. you can clearly see, that the echonets
that have more traffic today, are those that are just for bbs stuff...
and those who are for more things, outside the bbs community, are
simple inactive. isn't that weird? specially today?
for sure, don't make the mistake and think that because today, the
users that use bbses are older, they maybe "wiser", more serious and
have the skill to make a dialog/conversation with out breaking into a
"flame". no... no... no... people today, are more "extremists" than
ever. today people, because they think that they "found the light"
by reading an anti-mainstream media, they become more extreme, they
think that they know the "truth" and no one else, and so they are
harder to accept the view/opinion of others.
so why should we start making such discussions, again, on the bbs
community? if it's to result in flames? well... because...
1) it's all about free speech. anyone can say anything he wants,
whatever the mean. so why we should stop expressing freely our selves,
where and when we want? it seems that in the bbs scene is something
like an unspoken rule, that no one should speak about other stuff,
except bbs stuff... it's exactly like in the HAM/amateur radio
community. :(
2) if we don't exchange opinions/view, there is not a chance that we
will learn more or even change our views into something new or better.
if no one is speaking about their problems, how people on the other
side of the world will know them and even if they can't do something,
they could just be prepared, because one day, the same thing could
happen to them. exchanging opinions, making dialog is what evolves
society. you can see it clearly in "closed" and "open"
societies/people groups.
3) if a dialog results to a flame, it's not because of the subject
it self. it's because one or more people, are not able to make a
dialog, respect the opinion of others, be civilized! being civilized,
doesn't mean, that i read too many books, recycle, use an electric car
and so... being civilized is all about respect! respect to life, to
nature, to other people, to others opinions! if users discuss in a
civilized way, with out swearing, by making logical/historical
arguments and so.. why a discussion should result in a flame?
you can be as "quiet" as you want... but do know this... like others
missed the chance to talk about their problem, give to you their view
of the world etc... in the same way you will miss it too, when the
time comes and you also have the same problem. and if you think that,
that time, will never come... then you are a fool, cause you don't see
what's going on to the whole world and you are like some old men,
closed in their care houses...
