at the time present, there are two lord-type games, being developed
and both are online for beta testing. its Legion and Darkness 2.0. you
can find both, under the beta-menu in the DoorParty server. so join a
bbs that is linked to DoorParty and give them a try.
below, i am making... not a comparison exactly... but more... a report
on what i liked (and what i din't like) in each game. both games are
lord clones, but even if they have many similarities, there are also
different between them. the one is a fantasy game and the other a
scifi/cyberpunk style game.
these are my opinions and make sure that are not fair... i really like
scifi/cyberpunk things (games, movies, books etc) so i definitely have
a preference for Darkness, just only for the storyline. this doesn't
mean in any way, something bad about Legion. on the contrary, is a
very well designed game and those who like lord-type, fantasy games
should definitely check it.
my favorite game, would be a combination of both... for me... the
storyline of Darkness, with the graphics of Legion and some map
exploration of Legion, with the additions that Darkness has to
offer... well... you have to play the games to understand... or just
choose which you like more. :)
lets begin...
:: ui
for certain the user interface in Legion, is more graphical. more ansi
graphics for sure. Darkness is more a text based game, that in may not
have many graphics, but the text/document used in the game for
descriptions, is well written and makes the imagination of the player
to "draw" the scenes. in Legion there are ansi headers for each
screen, which for sure give a better feeling in the game.
in Darkness there are default answers/commands and by just pressing
the ENTER key, you activate them. for example if you are in the
armor/weapon store, the default command is to leave/exit. there is no
need to press the L or Q key to leave, but just press ENTER. the same
"rule" applies to deposit money in the bank and other areas. in
Legion, you have to always find and press the appropriate key for the
command and some times you have to press L for exiting a menu and
sometimes R or Q... but in Darkness you can just hit ENTER. so i
really liked that feature, although it takes some time to get used to
it.
:: gameplay
both games are different, even if they have some similarities. Legion
is a harder game to play, you have to explore areas, move to different
areas yourself, you may need to draw a map to play the game etc. on
the other hand Darkness, is easier in its play... you just get out of
the safe zone and things happen automatically in a random order. no
need to draw a map or explore things. you just answer or receive what
comes to you... so it's up to the player to decide if and what he
likes more or not.
also in Legion, the battles are harder and last longer. you will
notice that in a battle, in Legion, there is a small delay between the
attack of the enemy and yours. at first, i thought it was cool (and it
is), because of the anticipation for the hit/attack... but after a
while and because the battles are longer, it was tiring.
one thing i didn't like in Darkness, it was the thing... that you have
to figure out, the/a way to "hide" your player. in Legion, you can
simply go to the Tavern and get a room... but in Darkness is a bit
more complicated. so as a new user i got frustrated, specially, when
you have experienced players killing you :(
overall, Legion has a more "oldschool feel, where in Darkness things
are somehow more "modernized". both games are good and it's up to the
player to decide which one he likes more.
:: bank
the bank system in the two games is slightly different and it's logic.
in Darkness you can use all credits/money, even those that are
deposited in the bank, everywhere in the game. in Legion, you can use
only the money you have on you. so if you want to buy something, you
have to go to the bank, withdraw enough money and make the purchase...
it's logic, but it's time consuming. i prefer the way of Darkness, but
again, Legion is a fantasy game and Darkness a scifi one.. so it may
not be "real" in Legion, to let users use all of there money.
:: weapon/armor shop
something that wasn't obvious from the start, is that in both games,
when you purchase something, you can instantly sell it. in Legion i
think you asked before selling it, but in Darkness, you can't keep
it... it's been sold instantly. also in Legion you can also sell other
items of weapons/armor you have collected through the game, which in
Darkness is not even implemented. i mean, even if you collect some
type of armor/weapon, you just can't sell it, you only exchange the
old one, with the new item. selling items, is also a way to raise
credits/money for Legion, but for Darkness, the game system is
not exactly simpler or more complex... but different.
both games have a variety on weapons/armor, but in Darkness you can
also apply upgrades (or some kind of upgrades) to give your weapons /
armory a boost, which adds more to the game.
úúúúúúúúúú
so... what do you think? will you take a look at them? go on... play
both of them and enjoy, some oldschool gameplay ;) i admit that i
haven't played Legion enough, so don't give too much weight on my
words. also both of the games are being developed and by the time i
publish this article, some things may have changed. so the best thing
to do, is to spend some hours, playing both games and decide your self :)
