NULL mag Issue 06 14 Battle of the nets
in a philosophical view, we can say that war brings evolution to
human kind. this is a well discussed subject and there are many
supporters of this opinion, that trough the breakthroughs in science
that are done because of war, man kind has evolved... at least...
technological. although is a tough thing to say, it has some truth
in it.
we can say that in a more civilized way of war is competition. you
try to win your opponent, to be first, better, bigger in economical
sizes and for the opponent to loose or even vanish, economical
speaking. and we all know, that competition does good in many ways
and levels in human society.
as bbs members we sure do know a lot about this. in the past many
programs were made, that in some point vanished or stopped developing
and being replaced by other competitor software. we can say in some
point "why do we need another bbs server or ansi editor", but as the
past showed as, newer software brings innovation (sometimes), old
software gets lost (perhaps because it was closed-source) and people
who were involved with that soft. they left the scene or even worse
died etc.
so, making new stuff about the same thing is not 100% bad. yes, it
has some negative aspects but overall i would say that its good
that's happening. at the time present, i see 4-6 bbs programs being
in active development, which for sure is good for the scene. it shows
that things are still moving, developing and going forward. for me
its not about which program will prevail. no one knows which program
will stay and which one will vanish, but the good thing is that bbs
programs are still a thing, so the bbs scene. ;)
the same thing applies to networks. other closed down, other are
still alive but with less or no traffic, some with more traffic than
others and so. even new networks appear and this is also good! as
time passes, people get change, have new preferences or they like
the new stuff and want to try it etc. this brings new nets, new
choices and for sure in some point, there will be some "angry
interaction" between members, heads of networks and/or groups, but
this is normal and that's what brings new things and innovation to
the scene, as people interact through new and/or old nets, exchange
opinions and so.
seeing some competition and angry comments in a net or group is not
bad at all. but we should never forget that nothing lasts for ever.
there was bbs soft. in a time, that all users used and now has
disappeared... the same for nets, which once they were famous and had
many members and now are gone or remain dormant with no traffic. the
scene needs this type of "war" to evolve, to "mutate", to stay alive.
its very normal and either sides should consider it as bad thing, nor
that there is a "winner" or "looser". the "winner" is the net/soft.
that is still present and being used and this can't be predicted, it
just happens. also for the "looser", it doesn't mean anything. it
just happened and "lost" or vanquished.
so the battle of the nets, programs, groups its still going on and so
the scene evolves... "so say we all"... hahahaha :)
