[Uniquely My Country]

A pale and skinny jeans-clad student sits, spine ramrod, focussed on her Japanese grammar notes.

Four tourists, wearing garish jungle hats and clutching designer travel bags, entered through the sliding doors at Chinatown station.

A tanned boy in uniform, totally absorbed in his comic book story, imagined himself fighting Nazis and mutants and winning World War II.

A yuppie mother of two, late for work, goes gaga over some bespectacled actor with a name of three gruff syllables.

A 68 year old, ears already failing, feels her cracked heels pressed on her sandals, clutching the handrails, refusing to sit, still running away from her uncomfortable history.

Tokyo, Summer 1992
A six tatami room, hot as an oven. Barae and I made this in our art space; our living space. S.P.P. was what we called it and it was almost always full of light. Sadato, our neighbor, made the music in his living room nearby.

Back to the Lab Again
---------------------
In moments of complete calm, Jill sees herself surfing. Sliding down the face at the speed of the wave, tiny shifts in her weight and stance let her snake endlessly along the near-vertical surface of water. The chaotic soup of wave breaking into whitewater behind her; the calm, glassy surface curling up in front of her. Tiny splashes of cold water across her face.

Jill opens her eyes and finds herself in the midst of traffic. Faces in motion blur around her as if she were asleep and could not focus her eyes. Faces that appear to be frowning take on the surreal quality of Japanese masks, eyes lit with fiery red or bottomless dark, mouths bearing pits of teeth and tusk. A strange and menacing taste to the air.

Jill remembers this scene. She remembers the sounds, the smells, the tastes. All familiar to her. And the masks. She knows that behind each mask, in the pupil of each eye of each person around her, is a faint green line moving up and down. Her heartbeat.

She closes her eyes and is surfing again.

'Become the laboratory by standing still or sitting on the cushion provided. Proceed to do nothing. Relax your posture and attitude and observe whatever comes into experience. That is the excitement. Notice specific manifestations of mind as if they were data. Repeat as many times as you can this gesture of full presence of mindfulness. The laboratory is now portable and you may carry it with you wherever you go. Keep track of your findings.'

The Prostitute
---------
With her come hither looks
She looks like she could love you
Her thin silk lingerie-pearl white like her skin
One of the slings
Fell off her shoulders
Revealing her left small breast
Instinctively you feel protective of her
Of her vulnerability
The carelessness of her own sexuality
You feel like reaching out to her
To draw the fallen sling of her lingerie up
And give her the love and caresses
That her body and soul seem to cry out for

She sat at the side of the bed
Of satin sheets and french lace
Her legs slightly apart
As she runs her fingers through her hair
And waits for you
For a lady of her stature
Her seductive motions appear almost modest
Gentle
Like that of a pristine virgin

She gives you a hesitant smile
Which you returned... as hesitantly
It drew wider and as if in cue
As she remembers what Auntie says
"The power is in your hands"
This time she smiles again - the practiced smile
You feel that you could marry her then

A wince, a sigh
Slowly the rhythms synchronized
Love-making
Like two lovers in moonlight
Pecks and caresses
At all the right places
A grunt, another sigh
And it's over

You touched her face
Whispered "Thank you" to her ears
If not for the $60 that you slipped at her garters
It would look like you're together

As she slumbers on
You put on your clothes
Careful not to wake her up
And before you left
You took one last look at her face
And wished for that moment you could take her home

As you walked on the pavement
Of that cool November night
You thought about her
For a moment
You stopped at your tracks
You didn't even ask what's her name

You wondered about her life
Her family her friends if she had any
As you climbed up the stairs to your apartment
Took a shower
Poured the coffee
Sipping it slowly
The guilt slowly dissipates
And tiredness took over
You slumped yourself to bed
But before you nodded off
You thought
"I wished I could have said something more
Than just Thank You."
