Distance does help. We can all relate to those tales of shipwreck (the accidental kind) and hermitage (deliberate). They occur frequently in our myths and tales that teach us the importance of finding ourselves, being alone, gaining perspective.

It is unfortunate, though, that our world no longer affords us the ability to put things out of sight and out of mind. The ties that link us squeeze the planet smaller, forcing us to feel the raw stupidity of those many timezones away.

Back home I see the curious phenomenon of the increased outpouring of emotion aided by distance. I wonder if there would have been so many people coming out of the woodwork to look for a missing local girl. Or as many people making her mutilated corpse the object of their gambling lust.

Desafinado
----------
I was waiting to cross the road at the junction of Cross Street and Robinson Road the other day when suddenly the No Parking sign uprooted itself from the pavement. There was a crunching sound as it wiggled its last few inches out. The skinny thing streaked down the sidewalk past where I was standing. At the traffic light it took the opportunity to do a little taunting jig in front of the cars while the light was still red. The lady standing next to me was dumbstruck. I put my envelopes on the ground and would have rushed out to subdue the sign but it was dancing to a bossanova tune I really, really like.

Russian Greats
--------------
I remember last november,rushing to our seats inthe round theater. Half-way through, the man infront of us fell asleep,opening and closing hismouth like a strangefish. The music swelledand dipped, and it meantalmost nothing to me:the small crowd in the pit,each torrid maze of notesI could not read, thelovely curve andgleam of that cello,that violin.

Doll
----
Oasis is here, in the mirage on the long highway.
Thirst is ripping through heatwaves to the taste of asphalt,
sucking stones for the illusion of water;
and hunger is something else altogether.

In a ballroom of ghosts and desires
a doll stands perfect between the punch bowl and rows of champagne flutes.
Scanning the jeweled, fluttering crowd with black spooled eyes; silence
a pin that falls and falls, never hitting ground.

Trying to find the thread to home;
never quite believing the promise of the sign.
_Stay perfect through the years love and I’ll keep loving you_
And all I hear is silverchair’s dreams of dying alone.
