Chinese New Year

The pigeons were absent this year. Perhaps they were down with flu? It made the grounds outside the temple quieter, for no longer were there screams of chasing kids, eager with exerting all their forms of childish domination. Seems that was the theme of the past twelve months. Taught by parental greed, these same children drool at the living room blackjack table.

But waiting with patient desperation outside the gates of the palace, just as his father waited for his turn at power, is the ultimate white horse, naked but for the sunglasses protecting his irises from the unrelenting day, never likely to receive his grandfather's red packet.

Otherwise we have never seen before a white man in the forbidden city, but imagine a Jesuit monk standing in the sacred emperor's court, teaching the counting of days and moons and eclipses and stars.

Yet they could never invent a Chinese spelling bee, for that would be true lunacy.

Orion
-----
To escape as light, you need only obey
some simple rules:

Forget time, which only slows
at high speed.

Hold only to what gravity
cannot pull down.

Only know that when you arrive,
the rest will be made known.

Across the sky, only
a boy and his belt.

I'm walking home.

The Train
---------
you always see it in movies
the train puffing as it arrives
panting during transition
and huffing as it pounds off

with a train,
there's always a horizon
the vertical horizon of railway tracks
clear intent both its boon and bane

you always see it in movies
a girl; a boy; deliberating; not aware of
the invisible edge in a train station
that will drop through regret into remorse.

would you rather be the one leaving
or the one sending off?
what does your choice echo?
hurryupdecide before the train in my poem leaves

you always see it in movies
one(one half) of the two(one) stepping in
a step into the train
a step onto your heart.

the acceleration is the 'agonising'
in 'agonising speed'
the dreaded pick up
the cacophonous percussion of gears and pistons

doom... doom... doomDoomDoomDOOMDOOMDOOM

DOOM.

when the train finally leaves sight
is there relief
(or is it respite?)
arrivals, departures; all are part of transit.

so would you like to huff, puff, or pant

Turkey
------
I've not visited this site in two years. The land
is wordy and overgrown, strewn with broken poetry.
Stray commas dot the hills. Here, I once built
with rhymes taller than truth, and fell
through the roof of my mouth into a furnace.
The world's center is just like any kingdom: it refuses

to out-burn its splendour. but no longer on parade
as architect, I limp around with a spade
to bury one thing, then uncover then next. This must go:
the saddled skull that never controlled
these faultless limbs - until we learn to write, or stab,
or hold. I'll dig with hands fuelled not by dream,

but restoration. Dusting myself clean as an egg
will hatch no metaphor, because silence breaks
on the east. Sometimes, not always, the value of jade is measured
in calligraphy, just when the sphinx's beauty
becomes her riddle. And its good enough
that men may part before a murmuring sea.

If there is a center to knotted histories,
it unravels patiently, from kingdom into myth.
In all attempts to flee, to row, to bail out dirty water,
I pour oceans into my boat.
Turkey is the dream; this is real, the conclusions missed.
Untraceable city. The torn veil. This.

Japan: Land of a 1000 Wonders

"As soon as Nakamura (Matsushita president) became president he gave each of the company's top 400 company executives an Internet-equipped mobile phone and said all reports to him had to be done by mobile e-mail. Nakamura had taught himself how to type e-mail rapidly with only one thumb, Japanese high-school-girl-style ... The result has been faster communications and decision making."

Untitled
-------
Before me,
cheap fried pork,
on the greasy counter of a noisy shack in an alley
off a quiet side street
very near her room,
by eveningbusy Koenji station
in Octobercold Tokyo.

I've no idea where I am.
Koko wa doko;
watashi wa dare?

On tv:
jokes, scripted kisses and tears that are not tears;
families and lovers that everyone hopes for.

Some guy next to me coughs into his comic book
and lights another one.

Neon bleeds the rainy window
and I remember her birthday present.
