Making Game Genie's NES codes out of random letters and numbers
NES codes are almost as simple as you can get. With only one restriction, you can enter any combination of letters you wish. There is but one rule to follow when making up your own codes. Look at the two letter tables given in the codebook:
A P Z L G I T Y
E O X U K S V N
When you enter your code, the third letter must come from the top row. This makes your code a six letter code. As stated in the codebook, NES codes can contain either six or eight letters. However, your own codes should always be limited to six letters. Why? The extra two letters in an eight letter code are used to verify that a code is working properly. By using eight letters yourself, you reduce your codes to a 1-in-256 chance of doing anything at all! Six letter codes always do whatever it is they do.
Beyond that, there are no hard and fast rules. Feel free to punch in anything you like. Swirl the cursor while pressing A at random intervals. Construct six letter words from the letters available. Repeat letters in pairs or in patterns. Make up letter combinations that look or sound good. Use your license plate. Anything is possible.
