You'll enjoy to listen to another projekt band: lovesliescrushing.

Also -if you don't know them still- try to find anything by
silvania, shiFt, alison's halo, lilys, his name is alive, etc.etc..

Subject: Mojave 3 interview in Big Takeover

Just thought I'd let people know that an interview with Neil and Ian
is featured in the latest Big Takeover. The interview was done earlier
this year so unfortunately there is no real current info but as is the
case with all of BTs interviews, it's very interesting reading. They
talk about the breakup of Slowdive, the progression toward Mojave 3,
etc. Also featured in this issue are Cocteau Twins, Lush, Guided by
Voices, Greg Sage (Wipers), etc. For those unfamiliar with the Big
Takeover, it's perhaps the best indie rock magazine in America (I've
found no better) and comes out of NY and is crammed with interviews,
album/single/gig reviews and personal statements. You can get more
info by writing to Jack Rabid at <jrabid@aol.com> Jack's a friend of
mine so do please tell him I sent you.

Yipe! Bite your tongue!!!!! Well, maybe SOME Silvania surpasses SOME
Slowdive, but there are Slowdive songs that could not surpass ANY Silvania
song (that I have heard, at least). However...

As you should be! I am hoping to get a response from Elefant soon so i can
offer some Silvania to the record buying public in the US for cheap via my
mailorder. I'll keep everyone posted, of course!

is the in mind remixes worth getting? what i mean is, do the tracks apper
anywhere else, like the 5-ep or the last couple of tracks on the US
souvlakki? (sorry, i can't ever remember how to spell that). i TOTALLY
like the 5ep stuff by the way.

also, is anyone into a spanish band called Silvania? i have heard 2 of
their records and was wondering what the stuff after passijae III (again,
i can't spell it right) sounds like. incase you've never heard them, they
used to copy the slowdive sound.. but now are more drum machine oriented,
like good seefeel with a little more guitars (sort of).

Here we go 1st post to the list and hopefully it's a good one for ya.

There's a Shaving the Pavement US Promo Cassette which contains Mojave
3's Mercy, an acoustic? version I think from their set at a LA radio
station from last year?.

You can find it at Play it Again Records for $7 at www.id.net/~playit/.
If you have trouble-emailng him at the address posted at the site you can
also reach them at AKovan@aol.com

I personally would love a copy of the complete set they played if anyone
has a copy please let me know.

Avalovara-Delay Tambor-Galax Trax. because the other are very very

Ummm. "use to copy the slowdive sound"??! jajaja.
We can agree that silvania's 1st phase is influenced by slowdive but epa!
Did slowdive give all that movement game to their songs -Have you heard
"Miel Nube Hiel"?-, Is slowdive's ambient -5eps- close to get the magnicity
of Paisaje III? For me at least, the answer is negative.

I don't think that there are some silvania that won't never be
surpassed by slowdive.

I think that there are A LOT silvania that won't never be
surpassed by slowdive -inclusive if they reform-.

No, you're a bit wrong. On paisaje III they didn't use real drums, but they
did it in all their releases made before: Miel Nube Hiel, En cielo de oceano.

When you get those discs you probably will surprise of how an ethereal noise
sounds with all that change of movements. It's totally mindblowing.

I just have heard -a friend taped me- "Delay Tambor" They have left guitars
and some of their songs are dance oriented and the others are are ..... are
from another galaxie.

PS: I probably will be posting a review of Delay Tambor soon,
but please wait i got the tape on Saturday and i'm still very

Well, I have only one song with Silvania, "Se Girasol", and it is extremely
Slowdive-ish, and I do love it - but I would never rate any band over
Slowdive, ever, even if they do sound like them. :-) I have to get more

I have to say something about loveliescrushing.. I have mixed feelings
for their music. Sometimes when I listen to "bloweyelashwish" I get
that old MBV feeling through those walls of noise, but even more
accurate perhaps, Flying Saucer Attack. Droning electric guitar walls
behind a lonely electric guitar thread with floating vocals on top.
They're definitely not Slowdive-ish though.

> Also -if you don't know them still- try to find anything by
> silvania, shiFt, alison's halo, lilys, his name is alive, etc.etc..

I've never heard shiFt, Alison's Halo or the Lilys...

But as Scott from Closedown plays in Alison's Halo, I guess they're worth to
check out. Have they released anything else apart from the 7" on IPR?

I also hear that Lilys is pretty much drone oriented as well (ie. closer
to the MBV/FSA sound than Slowdive sound)?

About His Name Is Alive.. well, their music is very beautiful, kind of
oriental oriented (heh) at times, then kind of church choir oriented at
other times. Truly experimental ambient, with shocking electric guitar
hits painting the walls in one's room when one least expects it. Umm,
that's my definition at least. :-)

.. just my 5 |re ...

If I remember rightly, they're available in the US too. I posted some
stuff on the list ages ago about it - have a look in the archives. In
any case, it only costed me stlg16 or so to get it from Spain on CD,
less if I'd chosen vinyl - it would have probably been stlg13 (CD) in
UK record shops. I know CDs are cheaper in the US, but still not
grossly expensive.

Neil Halstead. I surprised to see this, since I figured he didn't listen to
much experimental pop anymore. When I interviewed Rachel in May, she said
she was only listening to artists like PJ Harvey, The Verve, Nick Cave, and
Tindersticks. Who knows, maybe we'll see those pedals again one day :)

Thought I'd have another listen to 'Paisaje III' before I listened to this
and I have to say that I was unpleasantly surprised - it's nice enough
but rather samey (except "Movimento" which is more electronic but
doesn't match up with the serious contenders in this genre). Basically
they have a good line in chiming 'ba ba-ba-ba' [sorry if that looks like
sheep] guitars but nothing else very distinguished. Not at all bad, I
hasten to add, but nowt to compare with "Good Day Sunshine" or "Missing
You". More like "Crazy For You" but without the great tune.
In 'Paisaje III''s favour there's no maudlin nonsense like "Country
Rain" on it.

By the way, I don't pay much attention to Slowdive's lyrics, so the
language barrier hasn't done the Silvs ("Dos Silvas" Wilder???) any harm
in this comparison.

> I don't think that there are some silvania that won't never be surpassed

There's a lot of Slowdive material that is surpassed by stuff on
'Paisanje III' BUT on that evidence I wouldn't agree that there's a lot
of Silvania (indeed any) that's better than anything Slowdive have done
(and their other material would have to be shockingly good to beat the
three tracks I mentioned above, "Avalyn II", "Golden Hair" or "Shine".

While I'm here:

- the Trembling Blue Stars album is very good, although there's
little musically unexpected going on. If you want to hear lots of good,
very angst-ridden Fieldmice-style (as I said, not unexpected) songs then
go get it.

- anyone got any idea what happened to Smashing Orange? I've got and
enjoy their eponymous debut album from '91, but have heard nothing
since. If you see a copy of the album consider buying it, it's decent
shoegazing material.

I think that's it!

Yes, the Silvania's "Delay Tambor" have been already released on Elefant.

It's hard to believe that the new mixes are taken from the same master tape
that was used for "En cielo de Oceano" -an etherealnoise's gem-. The songs
looks pretty radically different than the original versions, some songs are
very dancey -like the new version of "Oval" made by Locust, Wooww!! what a
great mix, it sounds like if it was another world's peace of dance, it really
makes me melt! Van Hoen is an alien, i want to know more about them!! (imagine
this has been the first time i hear locust, yes mixing silvania, so it
couldn't be bad)-and other songs are very hipnotic, cosmics and irresistibily
narcotics like the new mixes of "Trilce", "Arcangel", "Raymi I" and
"Un bosque en la memoria" made by Seefeel!!! (I didn't expect less from M.
Clifford) Scanner, Scorn and Autechre!

But the 3 new Silvania's songs included in Delay Tambor, are
exagerated astrals, exagerated sick and I love that!. These sounds
makes me feel like if i was in a metamorphosis, from human to alien,
and i can't stop it -i really don't want to do it-. Thanks Mario &
Coco (Silvania), thanks van hoen, clifford, etc...

Thanks for violate me!
Thanks dear aliens!!

Since you asked that, I listened to it again and R Montejo and Sara Orange
both sing off-pitch, but that's hardly uncommon in shoegazing. It works
quite effectively and they harmonize well on the last track, "Any Further,
It's Over".

In private email

- Frank supports what stereolad says about them going downhill, and
says they've done two albums since what I've got, which he describes as
an EP.

- Rachel (yes, that Rachel) has told me off for merrily describing Country
Rain as "maudlin nonsense". I'm sticking by the maudlin, and sort-of by
the nonsense!

See ya (as it were),

Here in the states there's a TV ad for united health care and background
song sounds like slowdive of old, a track I've never heard. I'm sure it's
not one of their songs but who knows. Lush actually had one of their
Sweetness & Light on a car ad here in the US this year.

The serious contenders in this genre have just remixed silvania's gems,
Doesn't it sound a bit ironic -regarding your opinion- dear Howard?

Let's see: SEEFEEL, LOCUST, SCORN, SCANNER and AUTECHRE!!! do you want
more?..... i think all is obvious. je.

It's just a matter of opinion. Because i think exactly the contrary that
you think Howard.

I really don't understand what you mean with ("Dos Silvas" Wilder??) what is
exactly Dos Silvas?? -it sounds portuguese to me-.

If you don't know spanish, you're losing all their beautiful poems that
silvania has for lyrics.

Yes, you're right their stuff is shockingly good. I'll recomend you to listen
their shoegazer phase -Miel Nube Hiel and En cielo de Oceano- and of course
their last Cd, Delay Tambor, for to give a serious coment about Silvania.
-sorry if that looks like sheep...-

Sadly, dear Frank, "Miel Nube Hiel" is not on Elefant, it's on a harder to
find spanish record label, Experience Records. And i think it must be
imposible to find today, it was released on 1992.

Regarding this and that there were some people who were lost in this
discussion because they haven't listend Silvania still, i have a proposition,

if you send me 1 CHROME blank tape of 100 or
+ minutes and the cost of the shipping here
-which sadly is expensive, at least for me-
that's $5 and $6 for US, -$5 is the cost of
sending a tape without the plastic box- i
could tape you Silvania and some other
peruvian ethereal-noise's bands.

It would be a peruvian ethereal-noise
bands compilation.

Wilder.

PS: I guess there are something like that on droneon list, a droneon
compilation i mean. Sorry anyway if someone gets disgusted of this.

Does any of you have information for and old great band called Earwig?
I know they're the same pair that formed Insides then.

But i just have 1 cd from them "Under my skin I am laughing",
which is really great, a lot of melancholy and beautiful keyboards
and guitars, sometimes it sounds a lot like Insides. Which is fine
for me.

Not ironic, but this fact (which I already knew) does suggest that they
disagree with me! The above _is_ just my personal opinion, and I think
we take for granted that that's all anyone on this list is expressing
and that we're not trying to impose our preferences on each other (well,
not _too_ hard anyway :) )

Just a nickname - like "the Weddoes" for The Wedding Present or "ver
Jazz" for Johnny Hates Jazz (yep, I'm a veteran Smash Hits [English teen
pop magazine] "viewer") Sorry if I used the wrong word for "the".

I probably will listen to their other work sometime. As it is, I think we
should tie up this thread, certainly as far as discussions between you
and I are concerned. It seems silly to have a flame war just cos I
think Silvania are good and you think they're great.

Best wishes,
Philip

Well Howard, i didn't thought you were going to take this
like a flame war, i'm just using the same words that you used although
in different situations, we're just telling our opinion to all the
people who is into Slowdive -i'm one of them too, of course- and
perhaps into Silvania too.
I guess the same happened with the Closedown discuss, noone
felt that someone wanted to impose his/her preferences.
Though the discussion centered in just some persons in this
case and that's because Silvania are not so known, which is something
we should reverse. That's all.

Hope to hear from you soon, Howard.

Subject: rare slowdive in the u.s.?

hi...i have been a fan of slowdive (and more recently mojave 3) for about
2-3 years or so. anyway, the only music of slowdive i have is their two
major albums "just for a day" and "souvlaki." a friend taped me (only
because i could not find it anywhere) "pygmalion." i would like to know if
anyone can give me a list of other stuff they have such as "eps" and such
and perhaps where i could get them from , if anywhere. it's so sad how hard
it is to capture the most beautiful music without searching diligently for
it...but perhaps that is part of it's beauty.

thanks...

It's curious but i see a lot of slowdive in the lovesliescrushing's sound,
things ala shine, or catch the breeze, the difference is that they just have
guitars -not bass and drums, at least in bloweyelashwish- which makes them
sometimes sounds pretty unconventional, and that's great for me.

shiFt is an ethereal-noise band from austin, texas. They have just released
one cd, "A folding sieve" where i can see influences of groups like, This
mortal Coil, MBV, Slowdive (the voices are pretty dreamy), Pale Saints and
Seefeel. If you find that cd -which contains 6 tracks- buy it!

Alison's Halo is amazing. Sounds A LOT influenced by Slowdive and MBV, pretty
shoegazer melacholic and dreamy. Apart from that 7" on IPR, there's a self
released demo -of 80 minutes!!!- circulating.

> I also hear that Lilys is pretty much drone oriented as well (ie. closer
> to the MBV/FSA sound than Slowdive sound)?

Yes the Lilys sound is closer to MBV, but are extremely great too. I see they
have listened Eternal, they have a great song "Elizabeth colour wheel" which
reminds me a lot of "Breathe" from Eternal. If you want to know them try to
get their cd "Into the Presence of Nothing".

Yes, they're music are pretty beautiful, God what lovely acoustic guitars,
and their noise enter like you paint it Erik. "Home is in your Head" is a
real gem!
