Mo's example is actually a pretty old example of a bad literal translation
(not into Japanese, I think) done by very early translation software. I've
seen stuff like this where the English word "bonds" (as in stocks and bonds)
was translated into French by computer and came out meaning 'bondage'...

Anyone get a chance to read the Slowdive/Mojave 3 article in the last
issue of the Big Takeover? Pretty interesting stuff, anyhow..there's
also an address in the issue in the back for a guy selling tons of
bootlegs with Slowdive stuff. I just ordered a Slowdive video from him
from 93(probably all just for a day stuff) anyhow, he's also sending me a
audio tape from the Souvlaki tour. If anyone wants copies, let me know,
and I'll send some out when I get them. This guy also has Blue Day, and
other rare stuff!!

Has anyone also heard any other bands that are pretty similar to
Slowdive, I am talking about (good female/male vocals) and awesome sonic
sounds. I liked Half String, Windy and Carl, and some FSA, anyone hear
anything close to that?

May even be one of those urban myths that never really happened...

At my old firm, The College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, we got our
business cards and so on translated into Russian when we started doing
stuff there... not until several months later did one of our partner firms
point out that the word that had been used to translate 'Energy' actually
meant 'Vigour' or 'Fitness'. I'd been wondering why the clients always
looked a bit disappointed...

Bowery Electric is very Slowdiv-ish in my opinion. Just released their
2nd album. Check out AMP-Sirenes too, great ambient rock stuff ala MBV.

verve's old stuff is good too. (as opposed to their newest album --
"a northern soul" (i think...))

a great album by them: "a storm in heaven".

also, for the instrumental ambience, try brian eno's "apollo" (one of
my favorites), or vangelis "opera sauvage" and "les apocalpse des
animals".

and for a less ambient, less ethereal diet, you might try red house
painters (my favorite band of all time). very sad. and full of
intensity at every turn.

that's all i can think of... of course, there is (was) only one
slowdive.

here in sweden we have this band called aquadays which sound pretty much
like slowdive (and sometimes like early lush) who have just released their
first song on a compilation album called a chance to shine by dorian
records. i am not sure if it has been released outside sweden but you can
download some songs from either "benno" (www.mc.hik.se/~benno) or" scan.
indie" (where this list comes from...

If you don't have the 5ep and just the domestic Souvlaki you are missing one
great song, In Mind. I rarely listen to my domestic copy of slowdive, i
just bought it cause it has Good Day Sunshine on it which isn't on the 5ep.
I'm sure SBK just put that song on there so people like myself would have to
buy the domestic too. I don't like when record companies change the
original way an album is, that is my problem.

colefax abbey
bowery electric (new record "beat" brings in superfly triphop beats)
silvania (old stuff is slowdivy, new stuff seefeely)

a couple more i cant think of right off.

Hey Jeff and Slowdivers,

Just thought I should let you know that SIANshperic4 have decided not to
break up and will soon begin work on their new album. I think the fact that
they were really starting to get a lot of critical praise around the time of
the break up brought them back to their senses. Just in case anyone is
interested, the name of their debut album is "Somnium" and they can be found
on Hamilton, Ontario's "Sonic Unyon" label.

Cheers,

Actually, it is. They left off "In Mind" so there would be room for "Some
Velvet Morning" which was originally on _Volume 7_.

what does everyone think of the mojave3 release? my wife thinks it

it the way i do slowdive.

not that i don't enjoy their new sound, but, i wonder if they have
any desire to even do one "slowdive-ish" song on a future album...

Oops you're right Some Velvet Morning not Good Day Sunshine. I think In
Mind is the best song out of all of the ep and SVM, so they really shouldn't
have left it off. Ya know? Yeah I should've gotten that volume instead of
the domestic, but i got the domestic for like $3 so it was a good deal.

I totally agree with you that the Mojave album is nothing too special. I
like it, but it is no slowdive. I think Neil just wanted to do some
different stuff (which is always a good thing) and that the next mojave
won't be the same. I just think of mojave as another slowdive album. He
had already changed the sound with Pygmalion, so maybe he'll just do
something new again next.

well, i would say there's practically no chance of there being a
"slowdive-ish" song on the next mojave album....in my opinion, "ask me
tomorrow" was an excellent debut.
but then i also love stuff like nick drake, tim buckley, big star, leonard
cohen. at the same time there were a couple songs that were near plagiarism.
listen to "where is the love" along with cohen's "one of us cannot be wrong".
mojave totally swiped the vocal melody.

anyway, my point is i think mojave will start to find there own niche in that
genre & start to be less derivative. i can't seem them going back to a
slowdive type of sound for a while. i believe "ask me tomorrow" sold more
than any slowdive record & that has got to be encouraging for them...

well, at the same time, having the promotional backing of 4ad didn't
hurt. I think if slowdive were on 4ad in the first place, they would
have done much better.

But yeah, in that situation, there's no reason to stop being mojave,
unless neil gets sentimental for the past.

well, considering how 4ad dropped red house painters earlier this
year because their new album had a few guitar solos that 4ad didn't like....
this seems to be standard record company bull crap.

have you noticed how the new 4ad bands that are signing on are of
less and less quality...? used to be that you could pick up any 4ad
band, and they'd be good. you could count on it. i think we're gonna
have to all resign ourselves to the fact that this world is based
on business and not good art. art and business have always been
strange bedfellows, to be sure. that's why i started my own music
recording company and book publishing house. (the brownflower
creative group) because money-hungry record companies only care about
their own pocketbooks. nothing more.

peace.

Yeah, I've been wondering if and when Neil will start changing
directions musically..I doubt this next album will be much different
from Ask Me Tomorrow seeing as how some of the tracks we've heard so far
are the same kind of mellow lovey-dovey songs AMT has. Not to say I
didn't like it, I do a lot, but I think the lyrics were short of
brilliant. I like Slowdive's lyrics a lot more.

Anyway, I hope something changes.. I think Neil has proven to really
have a knack for music..no matter what um..genre he takes he keeps
churning out those gems.

i spoke to someone at 4ad a few days ago &mojave 3 have not been dropped (nor
are there any plans to drop mojave). they are currently recording the new lp
which is due to be released next year~ there is no date as of yet. the thing
w/4ad & red house painters is a little more complicated then people think.
there is no reason to assume 4ad wouldn't want to work with mojave after just
1 album...and since we're speaking of business, it seems a bit silly that 4ad
would shell out a lot of money for them to record an lp when they hav eno
intention of releasing it....

and in regards to lush, no decisions have been made about continuing or not.
it's still a bit early...

I agree. 'Ask me tomorrow' has some truly beautiful moments on it. You
CAN't compare it to Slowdive because that's just not fair. Personally
I'd like them to make more stuff like 'Dagger' from Souvlaki. This may be
my favorite Slowdive slow ever. Really POWERFUL stuff.

i completely agree. some of the lyrics from "just for a day" were
amazing. and what i loved about the muddled vocals was that you
could easily misunderstand what was being sung and end up with quite
a great lyric.

for instance, i don't know if the song actually says this, but i
always hear: "sister, i've lost all my feeling. i'm lost and i'm
soiled, i'll lay down beside you. sister, it's only my eyes. i've
soiled them before"

and then before that: "blood on my face and my hands and the words i
was saying, i..."

wow!
maybe i got this all wrong, but wow!
(i'm trying to do all this from memory...)

mojave3 has some good moments, but they aren't great.
and some of the lyrics, i felt, really fell flat.

someone on this list has what i think is the best lyric from the "ask
me tomorrow" release: "...tried to pretend that your room was a
palace..."

hmmm.

well, while neil gets more comfortable with his new sound, let's hope
he writes the lyrics that he and rachel were always good at...

peace.
