I totally agree. "Ask Me Tomorrow" is FANTASTIC. Neil finally got back
around to writing songs instead of sounds. And if the songs the performed
of the Shaving the Pavement tour last summer serve as an indication of
things to come... the next album will be even better!

whats up -
a few points:
1. Anyone know anything about the Mercy single
that Mojave were going to cut with an orchestra? It
supposedly was to come out last June but nothing! Mercy
is definitely the highpoint of the album for me. Love
the acoustic version on the Shaving tape.
2.Can someone supply an Eternal discog? I have two Eternal
tracks on the Glass Arcade comp. on Sarah. Nice kinda
blend of Slowdive and indie-pop; is that Christian Saville
on vocals ?
3. Morningrise has seemed to have been rereleased; its on
the Siren Disc catalog 9.99 . Cheers to Creation! Maybe
McGee'll rerelease those early Swervedriver singles next!
Oh yah - introductions.. name's Ian, been a Slowdive
nutter for the past five years or so. Got all the regular
releases except for the In Mind remixes and that Live
in Oslo boot (someone got an extra copy?).
Never got to see the 'Dive live, but did manage to catch
Mojave in Austin last April. Me and my mates caught Lush
in Houston at the annual radio station alterna-fest in the
afternoon, then drove 150 miles to Austin to catch
the Shaving-the-Pavement-minus-Lush at the Electric Lounge.
Got there at 11:00 pm, five minutes before Mojave came on!
The band were excellent, but didn't the keyboard player look
a little out-of-place! Was that Simon from Chapterhouse on
2nd guitar?! Excellent show - lets hope they'll come back
again!
on a related Chapterhouse note - anyone know about the 2CD
best of from the Chappies?

ummm...no, i don't completely agree...they have a few tracks, specifically
'maiden pinks', 'the red dots', and 'array', which are very 'slowdivey' (and
incredible); and even tho' some of the music is 'cocteaus-esque', the vocals
sound *nothing* like liz fraser's. (goth??? methinks not!)

It was the music rather than the vocals that I was getting at. Stuff like
"Scarlett Bliss", right down to the bass sound.
Anyway, I don't really care for them. Danella was very snooty to a friend of
mine for no particular reason. They're not especially liked in their
hometown anyway.

I think those were the only two songs (A and B sides of a single). They
recorded some more stuff, but the nerds at Sarah turned it down. Then
Christian was asked to help out with some band called Slowdive...

I spotted 2 OLD Primal Scream CDs at the local shop used for not very much
money. One was on Creation and quite old as far as I could tell and was
$15 (kinda a lot used!) and the other was on some other label but was from
'87 or so - pretty old, and I think the title was "Early Primal Scream" or
something like that. My point leads to this question: Is this stuff good?
I mean, as far as I'm concerned, Primal Scream hit it dead on the nose
with Higher Than the Sun. Is this older stuff anything like HTTS, or is it
poppy, or how is it?
Just wondering...

Hmmm. 'Scarlett Bliss'... that would be the single form the first disc
they released back in ..... 1989 or 1990 ??? As most good bands do,
AAM have grown considerably. You may want to judge them on something
relatively recent (then again you may NOT want to). Try the Bedazzled
web-site at www.bedazzled.com for some recent sounds.

I'm kind of suprised that no-one has mentioned them yet but Blueboy
aren't entirely disimilar from Slowdive. On tracks like the excellent
single 'River' they are equally blissed out. Although they have slimmed
down to just a two-piece now they did have a boy/girl singing thing
going on for a while. Their latest single on Shinkansen is rather good,
with some nice string sounds. Alot of their earlier releases are still
available on Sarah Records (through Shinkansen).

i picked up the Chapterhouse compilation a week ago. personally, i was quite
disappointed with it. their version of "rain" is quite interesting for those
who haven't heard it already (it sounds quite a bit like Ride). but the 2nd
disc is comprised mostly of demos (which i think are pretty mediocre) there
is a Spacemen 3 cover and "Die Die Die" which are pretty rare tracks. i just
don't think Chapterhouse were all that talented (apart from "Pearl" which is
brilliant). needless to say, i might be selling it if anyone's interested.

the older Primal Scream lp's don't sound anything like higher than.... or
anything of screamadelica. when primal scream first started, the 2 main
songwriters were Bobby Gillespie & Jim Beattie. after those lp's Jim left &
as he wrote the music the style changed dramatically. anyway, the sound on
those 2 lp's was poppy & very Beatles-esque and bobby's vocal style was more
in that vein as well. when Beattie left, he started a new band called Spirea
X (named after a primal song) & they put out an lp on 4ad (Fireblade Skies)
and a pretty excellent single (Chlorine Dream). he started a new band called
Adventures in Stereo, or something...

i think i can loosely call Danella from the band a friend, and i speak to
her enough to tell all of you that there are great people making brilliant
music. for any one interested, they are signed to BEDAZZLED RECORDS in
Washington D.C and tour rather regularly state-side.... that is why they
focus on their "hometown" a little less (i am assuming).
Another band on Bedazzled, THE CURTAIN SOCIETY are also worthy to
be mentioned on this list; they have just released a new album.
i not connected to the label or anything, but it's full of great
music; i would dare to call it the 4ad of North America as far as style
goes... if any one intereseted has trouble finding information, drop me a
line and i'll try to help ya out.

I just ordered a cd by the band shiFt (a folding sieve) which is absolutly
gorgeous. I don't really know what to compare it to though...hmmm...i'm not
very good at this. male/female vox, kinda noisy-but nothing like mbv. i can't
describe it any better than that, but i would highly reccomend it.

What?!?!? you're crazy. Chapterhouse's debut is a CLASSIC. If you missed
out on early tracks by them, buy the new 2CD comp. I recommend this to
true Chapterhouse die hearts for the 2nd disc. The first disc is GREAT if
you missed out on the early singles.

okay, regarding an april march, i was just taking their music into account;
i have never seen them live, so therefore i wouldn't know about those other
external factors...
another band on bedazzled (see http://www.iuma.com/bedazzled/) definitely
worth mentioning is ultracherry violet--sort of a hokie name, but their
album 'i fall to pieces' is quite good, and the track 'i think you're lying
to me' is nothing short of amazing!

As someone who has lived in the Boston area, I have seen the curtain society
live three times, and I must say that I have never been so bored at a show
before.
One of the most mismatched performances was the Curtain society opening for
the legendary pink dots. I found their songs to all be repetitive and
relatively the same.
However, since I have heard only one song on a compilation, I have no idea
how they sound "dead".

Blueboy sounds like slowdive? Hmm don't really agree. River doesn't even
really sound slowdivey at all. Just my opinion.

...there are *some* Blueboy tracks that indulge in ambient soundscapes, but
for the most part they are infectious twee acoustic pop ~ which in their case
works out beautifully. Blueboy have consistently put out stellar stuff IMO,
but as for continously close connections to the Slowdive sound -- I would
have to disagree.
Post-demise Sarah labelmates Secret Shine, on the other hand, almost
blatently stole the sound (only to a lower-fi finished product) The
"loveblind" ep *is* a Soulvaki-era Slowdive incarnate single if there ever
was one :)
btw, does anyone know what Secret Shine is doing now?

don't pay any attention to the slowdive references, they aren't really
valid. you'll hear a lot that they're like early verve, which is sort of
right. their sound is very lush, reverby, and spaced out, but the songs in
general aren't as solid as verve's. out of the ten songs on the album, two
or three strike me as great; there are about three bad seeds in there --
they can get kind of corny at times. borrow someone's copy and listen to it
first, that's what i would recommend.

cd bonzain deals in *alot* of bootlegs. They receive a good selection of
shows, but be warned, they take forever in delivering the goods. I placed an
order, waited a month, called, faxed, called again, got a response, waited
another two weeks, called again - and finally a week later received the cd I
wanted.
So, if the time factor has no bearing on things, then I would say o.k., but
if you like to have cd's delivered to you (after eons waiting) and without
having to do their invoice busy work then I would steer clear.
