I notice that Rose McGowan (the girl in TDG) appears in the film Scream -
anyone seen this?

OK, sorry for the non-listie content.
Big Hat were a lovely Chicago band, active in 1990-94. The music falls into
more playful synth/rhythm -driven "beautiful female vocals" category.
Yvonne has quite a strong voice reminiscent of Kate Bush. The songs often
sound like Celtic marches with lots of odd percussion and the distinct
Midwestern feel brought by Char's electric violin. Unfortunately, they
disbanded, but the chief musical mastermind, Preston Klik, has a new band
(also quite nice) called My Scarlet Life. Big hat had three (?) albums out
on now defunct C'est La mort label, "Shimmer" being the best, IMHO. "Pluck
song" is from "selena at my window", if I remember correctly. Since CLM
releases are hard to come by these days, i would try to find C'est La Mort
on the net (Woody had aol address or s/thing): maybe they still have some
CD sitting around. If you liked Big Hat, you may also try Grace darling on
C'est la Mort as well. Hope it helped.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"SHAMELESS SUNDAY'S" @ THE "LION'S BAR" IN TORONTO!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beginning this Sunday -- January 12th -- Toronto will be graced with another
weekly night of great music! The name of the gathering is "SHAMELESS" and
it takes place at the Lion's Bar at the south-west corner of College &
Augusta in Toronto's "Kensington Market" neighbourhood. This is the same
venue that used to house "BlowUp!" and "Skeem." Some of you may also know
the Lion's Bar as the current home of "Happy Music for Nice People" and
"M_Space." The exact address is 349-A College St (just west of Spadina) and
music will begin at 9:00pm. It will be hosted by PolyGram's Mike McCann and
CHRY's Jason Paris. Cover is only $2 and the music will consist of a decent
mix of pop, indie, alternative, techno, house, trip hop, drone, shoegazing
and cheese!!! Much of the music will be of U.K. origin, but this in NOT
another Brit Pop night in Toronto!!! We are trying to do something a little
different and while we hope to play a lot of popular favourites we'd also
like to play brand new singles, rare b-sides, live recordings and certain
songs you'd never dream of hearing in a club! We are open to requests and
hope that you make some! There will also be free give-a-ways for the latest
PolyGram releases!!! So come and be shameless!

Hey all:
Well, after a long hiatus, I'm planning to start my web zine Dreampop again
(now that I am no longer a grad student at NYU, I'm now on a commercial
server with T3 access to the net....)
An idea for the first issue of the redesign was to have a feature on unsigned
bands in the Twins, MBV, Slowdive, Spiritualized, Loop, etc. etc. vein. I
basically want to have a soundlclip with small photo/cover art image and I'd
write a small blurb of my impressions....
So if you're interested, send me some email.
Thanks a lot,

hope that someone would like to do a trade for one of the aforementioned

Hello all,
I'm Sanz & I used to write a newsletter for Big Hat. If anyone is interested
in getting Big Hat recordings, try contacting Preston <kliktrax@aol.com>. Only
2 of the Big Hat Cds were on C'est la Mort: "Shimmer" & "Selena at my Window".
"Pluck Song" is from "Shimmer". The 3rd & last CD was released by Preston after
the band imploded & thus quickly faded into obscurity which is a shame 'cause
IMHO it was the most textural, unrestrained, & dreamy of the lot, it's called
"Tacqueria El Norte". Big Hat was often compared to Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie &
the Banshees, Dead Can Dance, & as Boroda mentioned, Kate Bush.
Yvonne Bruner (the BH vocalist) has a new band now called X-Feline which bares
little resemblance to BH, but is also very cool & way more out there. X-Feline
is composed of cello (Erik who toured with The Smashing Pumpkins & was featured
on "Disarm", bass, guitar (Neal fomerly of Catherine), drums, and vocals. I saw
them last night (3rd gig ever) and they seared the wax out of my ears in the
most intoxicating sense you can imagine.
Well, back to lurking I go. I hope that this non-listyness will not be held
against me.

hi there 4ad-l folks,
because of the fact that i'm looking into buying some new musical
equipment, i've decided to part with a few kollector-skum gems along with
some not-so-hard-to-find items. i would like to sell these for a
fair/decent price (i.e. i don't want to rip anyone off), but don't wanna
give'em away either. so i figured i'd hold a mini-auction.
today is tuesday, i shall end the auction at 11:59 CST on friday,
january 17th. i will send ONE update to interested parties on late
wednesday night/thursday morning as to the status of the auction, and
that'll be it until the final outcome. i will not hold items for longer
than two weeks...if no payment for items is received by then, items go to
the next highest bidder (if any). payment by money order is encouraged,
checks=1 week to clear.
questions about items are welcomed.
shipping? extra, but cheap ($1 for first item, .50 each
thereafter), items will be sent priority u.s. mail unless interested
parties wish elsewise...then we shall figure out shipping costs.
...bit enough details, here we go. items are in stellar condition
unless indicated otherwise, min bids in u.s.$:
CD
-----
slowdive - blue day (MIN BID $20)
pale saints - mrs. dolphin (obi strip and insert included, MIN BID $20)
cranes - lillies (u.s. promo collection, 6 tracks, MIN BID $10)
cranes - jewel (u.s. edition, 4 tracks)
pieter nooten/michael brook - sleeps with the fishes
stereolab - laminations e.p. (recent promo w/3 unreleased tunes and a
remix of "metronomic underground", MIN BID $15)
VINYL (sleeve wear is noted, but all discs are extremely clean)
------
this mortal coil - sixteen days/song to the siren 12" (some minor sleeve
wear)
marc & the mambas - untitled (double LP from marc almond & freinds, on
some bizarre, some minor sleeve wear)
what makes donna twirl/to nije sala LP (brad laner-related stuff from
1989, corner rip on inner sleeve)
martyn bates - love smashed on a rock LP (double disc set, with extra 12"
on DIDI records)
boo radleys - at the sound of speed 7" (marble vinyl, on spinart)
boo radleys - every heaven e.p. (original rough trade vinyl, small scar on
cover corner where original price tag was)
tones on tail - ???? (collection of first singles, on
situation two, MIN BID $12)
some bizzare - s/t (original compilation from this label, sleeve wear is
apparent, but a good comp. early depeche mode, blancmange, the the, etc)
wolfhounds - happy shopper e.p.
wolfhounds - son of nothing e.p.
CASSETTES, all in perfect shape.
---------
lush - words & music (u.s. radio promo for the Gala compilation. all the
songs from that collection interspersed with miki & emma interview
segments)
his name is alive - home is in your head (u.s. promo, no different from
album. on a maxell tape w/typed insert)
cocteau twins - victorialand (4ad cassette, nothing real special)
...and that's it for auction items.
***i have a copy of the "mai pen rai" cd also, it's in great shape except
for an address-label sized discoloration on the front where a pricelabel
used to be. for this reason, it wouldn't be fair to auction it, but if
someone would like it, i would trade for disco inferno's "technicolour" cd
or this heat's "repeat" cd.
interested parties please reply via email (rorshach@execpc.com).
thanks for listening.

I don't know that much about them, but I've been hoping there would be a
Telescopes site with images and interviews (I've never seen any), and
Creation obviously wouldn't put one up at this point. Could you let everyone

Speaking of the Telescopes, I have 3 early EPs here for sale, for anyone
interested. As far as the Telescopes are concerned, this is where it's at
for them! Here's what I got (none of them have "titles", per se, but here
are the song titles):
-celeste/ all a dreams/ celestial
-everso/ never learn not to love/ wish of you
-flying/ soul full of tears/ high on fire/ the sleepwalk
All are on CD in cardboard slipcases, and all have super-gorgeous artwork!
They are up for grabs at $10 each-first come, or best offer.

anyone interested,
I found a cool way to copy the slowdive sound, run your guitar through a
reverb unit, then through a compressor, fuzz pedal, flanger, chorus, and
delay, then turn all your rever up on your amp. voila. I give you the sweet
sounds you might here on Souvlaki!
